Ruben E. Mahan
Ruben E. Mahan, 84, of Charlotte, died Friday, Jan. 31, 2003 at Ingham Regional Medical Center in Lansing.
Mr. Mahan was born May 24, 1918 in Jackson, the son of Oren and Julia (Carpendall) Mahan, and had been a Charlotte resident for 66 years, coming from Eaton Rapids. He was a veteran of World War II, having served as a medic in the U.S. Army Infantry, and was a retired employee of Aluminum Extrusion/Hoover Group, retiring in 1983 after 32 years of service. Mr. Mahan was a former member of the Charlotte Eagles and had been a Little League coach. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and bowling, and was mechanically inclined.
Surviving are his wife, Ione (Alspaugh) Mahan; daughters, Julia (Bob) Crosslan of Marionette, Wis. and Gerry (Jack) Holbrook of Eaton Rapids; son, John Mahan of Grand Rapids; step-daughter, Jolinda (Frank) Harmon of Charlotte; step-son, Randy Merrill of Charlotte; four foster daughters, Vevia (John) Beaulieu of North Fort Myers, Fla., Verna (Ron) Rader of Branch, Elizabeth (Herb) Cross of Scottville and Luella (Steve) King of Stanton; 24 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren; and a sister, Betty (Anthony) Proctor of Eaton Rapids.
He was preceded in death by sisters, Ruth Bonus and Florene Butler; brothers, Clifford, George and Clayton; three great-grandchildren, Hunter Abbott, Nicole and Gerald Holbrook; and first wife, Roberta Mahan.
Funeral services were held Feb. 4 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Pastor Charles Hanlon officiating. Interment was at Bosworth Cemetery.

W. Edith Maki
W. Edith Maki, age 90, of Olivet, died Tuesday, April 1, 2003 in Ann Arbor.
Mrs. Maki was born Nov. 23, 1912 in Dostonville, Tenn. the daughter of Frank and Nellie (Carter) Smith and was a long time Olivet resident. She had been employed at Woodland Metal Products in Marshall, had owned and operated the Olivet Truck Stop and the Bib’N’Tucker restaurants, both in Olivet, had been employed by Olivet College in the Food Service Dept. and had operated an upholstery shop in her home. She was a member of the Cora Sexton Circle, the Charlotte VFW Auxiliary, attended Olivet Senior Citizens and was an avid gardener.
Surviving are her son James Harris of Olivet; seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Roy Janousek in 1950 and Arthur Maki in 1977; son, William Frank Harris in 1966; and a brother, John Smith in 1990.
Funeral services were held April 4 at Burkehead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Rev. Winford Collins officiating. Interment was at Floral Lawn Memorial Gardens in Battle Creek.

Myrtle I. Mapes
Myrtle Irene Mapes, 88, of Bellevue, died Oct. 25, 2003 at Eaton County Medical Care Facility in Charlotte.
Myrtle was born Aug. 4, 1915 to Silas and Minnie (Boorer) Dull in Barry County. She married Walter Mapes on March 24, 1932; he died in 1984. Myrtle was a member of Bellevue Baptist Church and the Maple Leaf Grange. She regularly attended Bellevue and Olivet senior citizen groups and was the original member of the Evans-Mayo Birthday Club. She enjoyed gardening and selling her home-grown produce.
She is survived by daughters, Barbara Colburn of Bellevue, Winifred (Ernie) Granfors of Jackson; six grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Lavona Majeski of Shelby and Cecile Anderson of Nashville; and brother Hubert Dull of Nashville.
She was preceded in death by brothers, Guy, Loring, Lester, and Dewey Dull; and sisters, Olive Sears and Doris Martin.
Services were held Oct. 28 at Bellevue Baptist Church, with Pastor Don Francis officiating. Interment was at Riverside Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Eaton County Medical Care Facility of Bellevue Baptist Church. Arrangements were by Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue.
Nellie Marks
Nellie Marks, age 89, of Albion, passed away Sunday, November 23, 2003 at Tendercare Nursing Home of Albion. She was born August 2, 1914 in Clarence Township, Michigan, to August Custer and Hattie Walters. She was married to Richard Marks on February 24, 1934 in Angola, Indiana. He preceded her in death in 1970. She was a life resident of the Albion-Prairie Lake area, she was a Homemaker, and she also worked at the Pagoda Restaurant in Albion for 8 years. She enjoyed sewing and had made over 100 Monkey Dolls.
She is survived by a daughter, Joan (Richard) Hoag of Springport, 2 sons, Richard (Eileen) Marks of Albion, Frederick (Sandra) Marks of Albion. 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren. One sister Mabel Stone of Allen. She was preceded in death, besides her husband, 10 brothers and sisters, a brother-in-law Edward Marks, 2 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild, 1 great-great-grandchild.
Friends and family may call at the Albion Chapel of Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels on Tuesday, November 25, 2003 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. Graveside Funeral Series will be Wednesday, November 26, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. at Clarence Center Cemetery, with Rev. Robert Doner officiating. Memorials may be made to Donors Choice.
Margaret Marshall
Margaret “Maggie” Marshall, age 26, of Charlotte, died Friday, Sept. 26, 2003 as a result of an automobile accident.
Maggie was born in Orlando, Fla. and had been a Charlotte resident for about 10 years. She was recently employed by Burger King Restaurant in Charlotte.
Surviving are her daughter, Monique Marshall of Charlotte; son, Cody Pruitt of Florida; mother, Sindi Marshall of Charlotte; father, Charles Hull of Florida; brother, T.J. Marshall of Charlotte; grandparents, Ted and Evelyn Marshall of Charlotte; grandmother, Ruth Hull of Florida; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services were held Oct. 1 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Rev. Randy Royston officiating. Interment was at West Carmel Cemetery in Charlotte.

Roberta J. Marshall
Roberta J. Marshall, 64, of Olivet, died Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003 at Ingham Regional Medical Center in Lansing.
Mrs. Marshall was born Feb. 3, 1939 in Albion Twp., Calhoun County, the daughter of Charles L. and Frieda B. (Grunderman) Winchell and had been an Olivet area resident for 35 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred W. Marshall in 1990.
Surviving are: four children, Russell Marshall of Olivet, Darla (Lee) Wethington of Kalamazoo, Dawn (Ted) Kiser of Hagar Shores, MI and Fred (Shannon) Marshall II of Olivet: five grandchildren, Chris Boyer, Misty Boyer, Tadd Kiser, Trevor Marshall and Autumn Marshall; eight brothers and sisters, Carol Bailey, Lawrence Winchell and Alice Ormsbee of Bellevue, Percilla Morris, Joanne Burkett and Suzie Swift of Vermontville, Joyce White of Florida and Kathy Winchell of Charlotte.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 8 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, with Rev. Dr. Roy Backus officiating. Interment will follow at the West Carmel Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home.
Helen E. Mathis
Helen E. Mathis, age 75, of Charlotte, died Tuesday, April 29, 2003 in Charlotte.
Helen was born Dec. 16, 1927 in Bronx, N.Y., the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth (Pollak) Balsan, and had been a Charlotte resident since 1955, coming from New York. She was employed in the housekeeping department at Hayes Green Beach Hospital, from where she retired in 1985 after 19 years of service.
Surviving are two daughters, Mary Wilson and Barbara Raborn, both of Battle Creek; one son, Kenneth (Yvonne) Mathis of Battle Creek; 13 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Rudy Balsan of Florida; and one sister, Margie Murphy of Alabama.
Funeral services were held May 3 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Elder Mel Crowley officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte.
Memorial contributions may be made to Eaton County Humane Society, American Heart Association or American Lung Association.
Arthur W. Matthews
Arthur W. Matthews, age 89, of Ionia, passed away Saturday, March 29, 2003.
He was born July 3, 1913 in Jackson, the son of William and Leatha (Clark) Matthews. Mr. Matthews was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during World War II, and a member of Ionia VFW Post #3732 and the Ionia Moose Lodge. He married the former Donnabelle Bennett on Jan. 11, 1948; she preceded him in death June 17, 1990, along with a daughter, Lorna Gayrit in 1978. Mr. Matthews was an avid horseshoe player, winning many championships over the years, and also bowled for many years. He was involved in Little League in Ionia and also drove school bus. Mr. Matthews managed the Farmers Gas and Oil for two years, worked as a mechanic for Pesche Meat Packing Co. in Ionia of 10 years, worked for 12 years at Standard Supply and Lumber in Ionia, and also worked for Sids Flower Shop in Ionia as a delivery man.
Surviving are five sons, David (Karen) of Ionia, Paul (Marilyn of Orleans, Wayne of Muir, Steve of Ionia and William (Terri) of Ionia; two daughters, Neola Gereau of Gladstone and Marlene (Alan) Housler of Manistique; 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; brother, Kenneth (Verna) Matthews of Brookfield, Ill.; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held April 2 at Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Cook Chapel, Ionia, with Rev. Marvis Hale officiating. Interment followed at Orleans Cemetery. Military honors were provided at the cemetery.
