Harold R. Maurer
Harold Richard Maurer of Olivet, age 84, beloved husband and father, passed away peacefully Nov. 27, 2003.
Harold was born May 26, 1919 in Eaton County and was a lifelong farmer in the Charlotte/Olivet area. Harold also owned Maurer Farm Canter, and agribusiness that provided area farmers with fertilizer, chemicals, grain drying and handling equipment. Later in life he worked at Sam’s Club in Lansing where he was known as “Harold the Farmer.” His other activities included helping start Junior Farm Bureau in Eaton County. He was a state of Michigan sheep-sheering champion and sheered sheep to produce wool for aviator flight suits in World War II. He had operated the Miller Dairy Ice Cream Store in Hastings, was a past 4-H leader, a member of the Eaton County Fair Board, Olivet Community Schools PTA, was a Walton Township supervisor and a member of the Emma Grange.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents, Parley and R. May (Powers) Maurer; brother, Howard Maurer; first wife Lucile (Dingman) Maurer; and a daughter Marlene.
He is survived by his wife, Marion (Denny) Maurer; children, Karen (Larry) Haigh, Marvin (Tammy) Maurer, Martha (Alan) Scott, Aaron Maurer, Darlene (Roger) Conley and Carla (Brian) Wilmore; 13 grandchildren, Lynn Haigh, Lachelle (Haigh) Reist, Cory Maurer, Brandan Maurer, Shannan Maurer, Alanda Scott, Logan Scott, Kavan Scott, Bethany Maurer, Kristina Conley, Ryan Conley, Thomas Wilmore and Andrew Wilmore; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Iva Jean (Loren) Wilmore.
Funeral services were held Dec. 1 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Rev. Karen Wheat officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to Eaton Community Hospice or the American Cancer Society.
Thelma Maybee
Thelma (Pierce) (Cousins) Maybee, age 90, of Hastings, died Sunday, July 20, 2003 at Thornapple Manor in Hastings.
Mrs. Maybee was born Oct. 4, 1912 in Hastings, the daughter of Merlin and Elizabeth Pierce. She worked as a kitchen aide at Borgess Hospital for several years, and was a member of the Eagles Aerie and the Moose Lodge in Hastings.
She is survived by her son, Herman Cousins of Charlotte; daughter, Virginia Stanton of Muncie, Ind.; 10 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Verna Irene McCarrick
Verna Irene McCarrick, age 85, of Eaton Rapids, died Wednesday, April 30, 2003 in Eaton Rapids. Verna was born October 4, 1917 in Windsor Twp., the daughter of Fred and Martha Florence (Skinner) Twichell. She retired in 1983 from the Eaton Rapids High School Food Service Dept. where she was a supervisor. Preceding her in death were her husband, Irving, in 1978, her granddaughter, Patricia Norris in 2001, 2 sisters and 5 brothers.
She is survived by 5 children, Charles (Rosetta) McCarrick of Eaton Rapids, Barbara Adams of FL, Robert (Nancy) McCarrick of OH, Richard (Diane) McCarrick of Lansing and Sharon McCarrick of Eaton Rapids; 19 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; 2 brothers, Harley (Arlene) Twichell of Gladwin, Harvey (Doreen) Twichell of KA; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Friday, May 2, 2003 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids. Those desiring may make contributions to the March of Dimes in memory of Verna McCarrick.
Myrtle I. McCuaig
Myrtle I. McCuaig, 87, of Marshall, died Sunday Feb 23, 2003 at Marshall Manor, where she had been a patient since Friday.
Mrs. McCuaig was born April 2, 1915 in Bellevue to Alvin and Mary (Secore) Day. She was a lifelong resident of this area and graduated from Charlotte High School. She received her teaching certificate in 1956 and a master’s degree in 1959 from Western Michigan University. Mrs. McCuaig had been employed as a teacher in the Homer Public Schools for 27 years, retiring in 1977. Prior teaching positions were held in Marshall and Albion schools. On May 23, 1942 she married Charles “Doug” McCuaig in Charlotte; he preceded her in death Oct. 31, 1997. Mrs. McCuaig attended Lyon Lake United Methodist Church and was a member of the Michigan Education Association. She enjoyed playing golf and making small crafts.
She is survived by nieces, Olive Derrick of Ceresco, Marilyn Howard of Florida and Karla Beagle of Midland; nephews Ed Collins of Olivet, Kerry Collins of Midland and Albert Day of Danville, Calif.; numerous great-nieces and nephews; and a great-great-niece and nephew.
Services were held Feb. 28 at Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home in Marshall, with Pastor Richard Schlee officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
Barbara J. McDiarmid
Barbara J. McDiarmid, 75, of Mulliken, died Friday morning, April 4, 2003 at Hayes Green Beach Hospital in Charlotte.
Mrs. McDiarmid was born Feb.3, 1928 in Grand Ledge, a daughter of Earl and Nina (Clark) Bigford. She was a member of Yahweh’s House of Prayer. Her first husband, Maurice Taylor, died in 1973, and her sister, Marge Brace, died in 1997.
Surviving are her husband of 28 years, Bill; one son, James Taylor of Mulliken; one daughter, Shirley (Jesse) Freeman of Scottsdale, Ariz.; three grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren; two step-daughters, Shelia (Rick) Stank of Lake Odessa and Vicki (Rick) Czech of Ionia; 11 step-grandchildren and 13 step great-grandchildren; one brother, Dick (Ellie) Bigford of Grand Ledge; and nieces and nephews.
Services were held April 7 at Barker-Leik Funeral home in Mulliken, with Pastor Michael Abbaduska officiating. Interment was at Meadowbrook Cemetery. Pallbearers were Greg and Mark Bigford, Troy Black, Randy Brace, Ron Edwards, and Heath Peterson.
Geraldine M. McIntyre
Geraldine M. McIntyre, 94, of Grand Ledge, died Friday morning, Jan. 24, 2003 at her home following a long illness.
Mrs. McIntyre was born May 17, 1908 in Coldwater, a daughter of Franklin Johnson and Ursula Blake. She had been a resident of Roxand Township for many years.
Preceding her in death was her husband, Harley; son, Dennis; infant son, Harley Jr.; and three grandsons, Gary Nash, and Harley and Darin Dotson.
Surviving are four daughters, Jean LaPierre of Grand Ledge, Joyce Middaugh of Nashville, Maryann Dotson of Charlotte and Betty Jane Nash of Vermontville; three sons, Vincent McIntyre of Grand Ledge, Vernon McIntyre of Grand Rapids and Barry McIntyre of Grand Ledge; 31 grandchildren and numerous great and great-great-grandchildren; and much valued caregiver, Marcia McIntyre. Services were held Jan. 28 at Barker-Leik Funeral Home in Mulliken, with Pastor Lester DeGroot officiating. Interment was at Meadowbrook Cemetery. Pallbearers were Paul Good, Brian LaPierre, Jim Middaugh, Mike Middaugh, Rob Nash, and Robby Rich.
Lawrence McKishnie
Lawrence McKishnie, 88, formerly of Eaton Rapids, died Tuesday Dec. 16, 2003.
Mr. McKishnie was born June 15, 1915 in Charlotte, the son of Ed and Maude (Stidwell) McKishnie. Mr. McKishnie loved life on his dairy farm.
Lawrence is survived by four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Florence in 1995, son Melvin in 1953 and step-daughter Bonnie Van Valkenburg.
Funeral services were held Dec. 19 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Rev. Mark Woodbury officiating. Interment was at Center Eaton Cemetery in Charlotte.
Ione E. McNamara
Ione E.McNamara, 80, of Olivet, died Thursday, July 17, 2003 at Hayes Green Beach Hospital in Charlotte.
Mrs. McNamara was born Oct. 20, 1922 in Lansing, the daughter of Albert and Leah (Stevens) Miller and had been an Olivet resident since 1967 except for a period of time she lived in Oklahoma. She had been a self-employed farm produce retailer, often operating out of Beach Market in Charlotte.
Surviving are seven children, Wand Rosser of Calhoun, Ga., Susan (Jessie) Cullom of Checotah, Okla., Sandra (Rick) Harmon of Olivet, Edward (Mary) McNamara of Olivet, Frank (Cindy) McNamara of Mason, Danny (Debbie) Click of Charlotte and Ione (Dan) Ormsbee of Bellevue; 16 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, Albert Miller Jr. of Holt and Glen Miller of Lake Odessa.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a grandson, Channing Trowbridge; one sister and three brothers.
Funeral services were held July 19 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Charles Jenson officiating. Interment was a Bosworth Cemetery in Olivet.

Daniel S. Menovske
Daniel S. Menovske of Charlotte, formerly of Mason, passed away June 6, 2003 at his residence at the age of 66.
Mr. Menoveske was born Aug. 12, 1936, the son of Stoyan and Minnie (Green) Menovske in Lansing. Daniel worked for the Real Estate Division of the Michigan Department of Transportation until his retirement. He enjoyed reading, woodworking and attending his grandchildren’s sporting events, and was an avid University of Michigan fan. Mr. Menovske held membership in the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #288 of Lansing and was a former Pop Warner Football League coach in Lansing.
Daniel is survived by his children, Carole Jo Brunner of St. Johns, Stephen Menovske, Denise Menovske and Matthew Menovske, all of California, Dawn (Rodney) Ching of Hawaii, Debbie Schueller of Charlotte, Joseph (Marea) Menovske of Elsie; eight grandchildren, Matthew and Christa Schueller, Chelsea, Joey and Kelli Ching, Levi Menovske, Bonnie and Tyler Menovske; and his sister, Mary (Wendell) Parker of Traverse City.
Daniel was predeceased by his parents Stoyan and Minne, and his sister Helen West.
Funeral services were held June 11 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte. Interment followed at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Lansing.
