Richard Mooney
Richard J. “Dick” Mooney, born March 25, 1938 in Lansing, the son of Jack and Hilda (Sargent) Mooney, passed away Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003 at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor at age 65.
Dick was a man with a great passion for everything he did or was involved in – whether it was his petroleum business, and in the later year of his life, the real estate investment field; his love of downhill skiing and golfing; his loyalty to the Michigan State University sports teams; and his great love, admiration and dedication to his family.
After graduating from Lansing Sexton High School and serving in the U.S. Army for two years, Dick borrowed money from his father to buy an oil delivery truck and he then drove for Ashland Oil out of Mason. This is how it all began. In 1977, he founded Mooney Oil Co., and his stations in the mid-Michigan area were known for great products and great services. During his career, he was very active in the Michigan Petroleum Association and was a past president of the Central Michigan Oilmen’s Club.
Dick served his oil profession well. He was very active in his community as a member of the Rotary Club of Lansing, the Michigan Dyslexia Institute and the Boys and Girls Club of Lansing. He was also te founding sponser of the “Michigan Parades into the 21st Century Parade” which then evolved into the “Michigan Parade” – now one of the state’s most popular parades. Dick loved to ske, play golf, bowl and play poker and played all with great enthusiasm and passion, but most important of all was the fun he had with friends in these activities.
Dick and his family spent some time in Florida and Utah in his later years, but he did not like to miss watching his beloved Spartan football, basketball and hockey teams play. Despite his failing health from myelodysplastic syndrome blood disease in the last 16 years, Dick never gave up fighting, determined to beat a disease that his doctors said would prove fatal within three to five years.
Dick also very much enjoyed spending time with his grandkids – particularly skiing and golfing with them – but his best golf partner was his wife, Cheri. Dick, affectionately known by many of his friends as “Moons” was a man for all seasons, who loved to work and play hard and yet would always find time to help others not so fortunate in our community. Once he met you, he never forgot you; he has an incredible memory. Dick’s legacy: great friends, great businesses and great family. He spent his lifetime smelling the roses – for others and himself.
Surviving are his wife, Cheri; four children, Terrie (Dale) hall, Brian, Brad (Cindy) and Todd (Shery); two stepsons, Michael and Anthony (Tiffany) Del Duca; 14 grandchildren, Lindsey and Aaron Pike, Amber and Nicholas Hall, Alison Hall, Matthew, Megan and Mark Mooney, Ryan and Andrew Mooney, Brooke Mooney, Brock Olejniczak, Brynn and Brooke Del Duca; the mother of his children, Karen Mooney; and a brother, Donald (Mary) Mooney.
