Martin L. Nagengast
Martin L. Nagengast, 60, of Charlotte, died Oct. 17, 2003 in Lansing.
Mr. Nagengast was born April 22, 1943 in Ft. Benton, Mont., the son of Christopher and Lillian (Steinbacher) Nagengast. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and worked as an electrician of General Motors for 31 years, retiring Oct. 1, 2003. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and Local 602 of UAW. He was a model airplane enthusiast and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and raised standard bred race horses.
He is survived by his wife, Kathy (Stegenga); son, Daniel; daughters, Anita, Sonja and Victoria; step-children, Jerry (Catie) Hamm of Olivet and Marie (Sean) Brisson of Marshall; 11 grandchildren; brother, Tim (Gail) of St. Charles Ill.; sisters, Judy Blenkarn of Ft. Benton, Mont., Pam (Noel) Davidson of Big Sandy, Mont., Nancy (Wayne) Monroe of Colorado Springs, Colo., Becky (Dale) Stone of Geraldine, Mont., and Lorna (Morten) Antonsen of Plano, Texas.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Mike and Henry.
Funeral mass was held Oct. 22 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Charlotte, with Rev. Fr. Patrick Murphy officiating. Interment was at Bosworth Cemetery in Walton Township, Olivet.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home of Charlotte.
Tommy L. Nance
Tommy Louis Nance, age 62, of Charlotte, died Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2003.
Mr. Nance was born July 24, 1940 in Cairo, Ill., the son of Elmer and Meddie (Aton) Nance. He was a pipefitter and a member of the Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church. Mr. Nance served in the U.S. Navy. In past years, he was an active leader in Boy Scouts of America and loved working in his yard to create an outdoor environment that all could enjoy.
He is survived by his wife, Judy (Sheppard) Nance; two sons, Daniel Nance of Waterford and Tommy (Glenda) Nance of Ypsilanti; his father, Elmer Nance; and grandchildren Desiree, Daniel and Chelsea Nance.
A memorial service was held Feb. 28 at Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church in Charlotte, with Rev. Karen Wheat officiating.
Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Hazel F. Nerone
Hazel F. (Burge) Wiles/Nerone, age 87, of Charlotte, died Monday, June 30, 2003 at Eaton Manor Nursing Home after a long illness.
Mrs. Nerone was born April 28, 1916 in Coe Township of Isabella County, the daughter of Ernie and Rose (Ingrasol) Burge.
She had been employed in the office at the former Behnke Plumbing in Charlotte for many years.
Surviving are three half brothers, Delbert David of San Marcos, Texas, Larry stone of Greers Ferry, Ark. and Harley Burge of Perry; granddaughter, Jacklyn Rose Guevara of California; and three great-grandsons.
She was preceded in death by husbands, Oliver Joshua Wiles in 1970 and Frank Nerone in 1996; daughter, Joslyn Martin; sisters, Alice and Pearl Burge; brother, Robert Burge; and half-sister, Wilma Adams.
Funeral services were held July 3 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Pastor William Tate of Evangel Christian Church officiating.
Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte.

Nettie M. Newland
Nettie M. Newland, 85, of Nashville, passed away Monday, July 21, 2003 at Thornapple Manor in Hastings.
Ms. Newland was born March 26, 1918 in Lowell, the daughter of Alcid and Lotta (Stauffer) Newland. She was raised in the Hastings area and attended local schools, graduating from Hastings High School in 1936. On May 2, 1940 in Hastings, she married Clayton Newland. Shortly after their wedding, the couple settled on the family farm in Maple Grove where they raised their family. Nettie was a homemaker who cared deeply for her family. She faithfully worshipped at Nashville Baptist Church for over 25 years. She enjoyed gardening, sewing and knitting.
She is survived by brothers, Arthur (Beulah) Stauffer and Robert Stauffer; son, Dwayne (Judy) Newland; daughter, Audrey (Gale) Wetzel and Joyce (Edward) Lockman; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and a niece, Christy Newland.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clayton Newland; three brothers and three sisters.
Funeral services were held July 23 at Nashville Baptist Church, with Pastor Lester DeGroot officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to Putnam Library. Arrangements were by Danields Funeral Home in Nashville.
Esther Nichols
Esther “Carolyn” Nichols, 95, of Charlotte, passed away Feb. 14, 2003.
Mrs. Nichols was born Sept. 11, 1907 in Olivet, the daughter of George and Mariette (Robertson) CorSette.
She was a telephone receptionist for Tranter Manufacturing for 23 years until her retirement in 1969 an dhad worked for the State Journal from 1933 to 1943.
She is survived by daughter-in-law, Colleen Beach of Lansing; grandson, William (Trudy) Beach of Mt. Clemens; granddaughters Debra Gibson of Lansing and Diane Winkler of Grand Ledge; eight great-grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and niece, Gloria Wilson.
She was preceded in death by husband, Mahlon Nichols; daughter, Barbara Beach; son, Ramon Beach; grandsons, Robert and David Beach; sister, Jane Turrell; and stepson, Clyde Nichols.
A Family Affirmation Service was held Feb. 17 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte.

Burrell F. Nickerson
Burrell Floyd Nickerson, 74, of Bellevue, died Jan. 25, 2003 at Battle Creek Health System.
Mr. Nickerson was born April 14, 1928 to Wellington and Hilda (Elfler) Nickerson in Bellevue. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked for American Door Factory in Bellevue, was a truck driver and heavy equipment operator, and owned the truck stop in Olivet. Most recently he built and ran the Bellevue Mobil Home Park for 10 years. Mr. Nickerson married Jeanne Cogswell on July 4, 1948. He was a charter member of the Michigan Pinto Horse Association and Green Arrow Horse Club, and raised horses for many years. He was also a member of the National Campers and Hikers Association. He enjoyed fishing and camping, and played the banjo, mandolin, and spoons. He and his wife Jeanne wintered in Kissimmee, Fla. for 20 years.
Surviving are his wife, Heanne; sons, Terry (Denise) Nickerson of Bellevue and Kevin Nickerson of Ann Arbor; daughter, Patricia (Paul) Mullett of Lynchburg, Va.; and sister, Ruth DeSantis of North Port, Fla.
Services were held Jan. 29 at Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue, with Pastor Wendell Stine officiating.
Janet K. Nighbert
Janet Kay Nighbert, 61, of Charlotte, died Thursday Sept. 11, 2003.
Janet was born April 7, 1942 in Lansing, the daughter of O’Dean and Madaline (Yeargin) Harris.
She is survived by nephews, Ken (Becky) Harris of Delton and Michael (Theresa) Harris of Charlotte; mother, Madaline Harris of Charlotte; and brother Ken W. Harris of Illinois.
Memorial services were held Sept. 13 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Rev. William Haggard officiating.
Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home of Charlotte.
Betty L. Norton
Betty L. Norton, of Dallas, Texas, formerly of Albion, MI, died April 16, 2003. She was born January 2, 1933 to Claude and Clara (Cox). She was 1 of 11 children, including her twin brother Billy from Phoenix, Az. Also surviving are brothers Donald and Claude Cox from Jackson, MI. She lived in Albion the majority of her life until moving to Texas in 1991. She was married to the late Rolland O. Norton, who was the father of her four children. Her son James Rolland Norton also preceded her in death, along with 4 grandchildren, Jodi Dassance, Tyrone and Jaime Rogers and Zachary Norton.
She is survived by 3 children, Teresa (Ned) Palmer of Eaton Rapids, David Norton of Homer and Paul Norton of Texas. Nine grandchildren, Jeff (Mandy) Dassance, Jacob (Kim) Rogers, Dave, Craig, Brooke, Gage & Talissa Norton, Eric (Carmen) Palmer and Brian Palmer. She is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at Community Christian Church on Friday, April 25th at 7:00 p.m. with Pastor Steve Klink officiating. Memorial contributions can be made to the Community Christian Church building fund in memory of Mrs. Norton. The family is being served by Skinner Funeral Home.
