Maxwell Ross

Maxwell Lee Ross, 80, of Sarasota, Fla., died Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003.

He was born Nov. 4, 1922, son of Walter Clair Ross and Isabella (Todd) Ross in Unionville and moved to Sarasota 21 years ago from Charlotte. Mr. Ross attended Michigan State University, ws a U.S. Army veteran who served with the 18th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, Mechanized in Europe in World War II. He received the Purple Heart in the Battle of the Bulge. He was active in the oil business, serving as a corporate officer of S.T. and H Oil Co. of Bad Axe and Todd and Ross Oil Co. of Ionia. Later he was in real estate stales in both Bad Axe and Charlotte. He was a member and past president of Bad Axe Rotary and a member of the Charlotte Kiwanis Club. He was active on the Bad Axe School Board, in civic affairs, in musical groups, and in Presbyterian Men’s organizations. A member of Sarasota’s Church of the Palms-Presbyterian, Mr. Ross was an elder in the Presbyterian Church for over 45 years. He has been a long-time choir member in his various church affiliations.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, (Margaret) Ann; two daughters, Connie (Robert) Schutlz of Findlay, Ohio, and Jane (Richard) Murdock of Charlotte; a son, Scott (Margo) Ross of Charlotte; and two grandchildren, Glenn and Tamara Ross.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Todd Andrew Ross.

A memorial service will be conduced at 11 a.m. Monday Feb. 17 at Church of the Palms, 3224 Bee Ridge Road, Sarasota, Fla., 34239. In leiu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Music Program of Church of the Palms or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Frances D. Rossman

Frances D. Rossman, age 85 of Eaton Rapids, went home to be with the Lord and join her loved ones on Saturday, January 11, 2003 at Rose Arbor Hospice Residence in Kalamazoo. She was born August, 25th, 1917 in Granger, Indiana, one of seven children born to Milo and Mabel (Butts) Odiorne. Frances worked for forty-four years at the V.F.W. National Home in Eaton Rapids, retiring at the age of 75. Her retirement was celebrated with a hot air balloon ride. She said she wanted to keep working so she could enjoy the travels, which gave her such joy. Some of those travels included the Holy Lands, Hawaii, Alaska, Australia / New Zealand and the British Isles. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Eaton Rapid and served many years as a church treasurer. She was also active in the B.P.W. Rebekah Lodge #142 and the Eaton Rapids Medical Hospital Auxiliary. Frances married Maurice P. Rossman on October, 3 1936 and he preceded her in death January 24, 1973, also preceding her in death were two brothers, Earl and Dean Odiorne and sister, Alice Rabbit.

Surviving are three children, Richard L. (Margot) Rossman of Duarte, CA, Kate Rouse of Woodland Park, CO, and Gayle (Jack) DeYoung of Kalamazoo; four grandchildren, Rick A. (Lauren) Rossman, Denise Rouse, Glee (Mark) Shelley and Ross Wilbur; five great-grandchildren; three sisters, Jerry Williams, Hilda (Larry) Murphy and Maxine Aldrich; sister-in-law, Mary Ordiorne and numerous nieces and nephews and very dear friend Sue Schultz.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, January 15, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. from the First United Methodist church in Eaton Rapids with Rev. Tom Evans, officiating. Burial will follow in Rosehill Cemetery in Eaton Rapids. Family will receive friends at the Skinner Funeral Home on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. To honor Frances, memorial contributions can be made to the First United Methodist church or the Alzheimer’s Association Michigan Great Lakes Chapter.

Alton (Al) L. Roth

Alton L. Roth, 70, of Marion passed away at home surrounded by family on Aug.7. He fought a long battle with cancer and his gracious Lord saw fit to bring him home.

He is survived by his wife of 50 loving years, Babette; children Pat (Den) Graeber, Larry (Julie) Rother, Ken (Susan) Roth, Judy (Loren) Tombaugh, Margie (Joe) Skeltis, Kathryn (Scott) Yeske; brother, Don (Esther) Roth; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services are planned for Saturday, Aug. 23 at 10:30 a.m. at Meadowbrook Cemetery in Mulliken. Arrangments by Holihan-Atkin Funeral Home, Grand Ledge. “Our prayers have all been answered, I finally arrived. The healing that had been delayed has now been realized.”

Contributions may be made to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation, 3 Forest Street, New Canaan, CT 06840.

Mary M. Roth

Mary M. Roth, 85, of Charlotte, died Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003 at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo.

Mrs. Roth was born May 1, 1917 in Wynn, Pa., the daughter of John and Mary (Sedlak) Pepa and had been a Charlotte resident since 1988, coming from Bunker Hill Township. Prior to that she lived in Union Town, Pa. Mrs. Roth was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Charlotte the the Greek Catholic Union Lodge in Pittsburg, Pa.

Surviving are one daughter, Priscilla “Patti” (Jason) Wahl of Charlotte; two daughters, Lisa (Mitch) Dula and Linda Underwood; three great-grandsons; and brother, John Butula of Macomb. She was preceded in death by her husband Stephen Roth in 1989; sister, Anna Brinca and brother, Mike Butula. Mass of the Christian Burial was held Feb. 4 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Charlotte, with Rev. Fr. Denis Spitzley officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery. Masses may be directed to St. Mary Church. Arrangements were by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte.

Gaylord Royston

Gaylord “Whitey” Royston, 71, of Moorestown, died Feb. 27 at his home.

Mr. Royston was born Jan. 25, 1932 in Charlotte. He was known as “HA HA” by his CB friends, and he worked for 30 years at Fisher Body in Lansing before retiring to Moorestown.

He is survived by children, Linda (Clyde) Grant, Sharon (Dick) Singer and Donna Maxwell; sisters and brothers, Leona (Don) Howard, Eugene Royston, Colleen Gingrich, Virginia (O’Dell) Carlisle, Patricia (Jerry) Parson and Jerry Crane; aunt, Bertha Caswell; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Lilah; wife, Rught (Spink); brother-in-law, Robert Gingrich; and son, Rick Royston.

Services were held March 3 at the Moorestown-Stittsville United Methodist Church, with Pastor Jay Kendall officiating. Interment was at Deepdale Memorial Park.

Arrangements were by Young Funeral Home in Lake City. Memorial contributions may be made to the Moorestown-Stittsville United Methodist Church.

Katherine M. Rulison

Katherine M. “Katy” Rulison, 82, a former resident of Lakeview Manor in Honcock, died Friday, Feb 14, 2003 at Mather Nursing Center in Ishpeming, where she had been a resident patient for the past three weeks. She was also a former resident of Chassell and Charlotte.

Mrs. Rulison was born Oct. 21, 1920 in Charlotte, a daughter of the late Grand and Katie (Severns) Shaw. She graduated from Charlotte High School in 1937 and Kalamazoo State Hospital School of Nursing in 1942. She worked in nursing for over 40 years, including local office nursing, 18 years at Hayes Green Beach, and retiring after 17 years from Eaton Rapids Community Hospital in 1983. Mrs. Rulinson was also the first director of nursing at the then new Eaton County Medical Care Facility in 1966. She was married to Robert Rulison in August in 1944 in Charlotte; he preceded her in death July 17, 1998. Mrs. Rulison was a long-time volunteer for Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly inhancock. She was a current Advisor Committee member of Superior Home Nursing in Hancock and did extensive volunteer work for the American Heart Association in the past. She loved flowers and music and will be remembered for playing the keyboard at Lakeview Manor with her music.

Surviving are two sons, David (Linda) Rulison and Richard Rulison, both of Pelkie; two grandchildren, Jesse of the United States Marine Corps and Adam of Pelkie; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; son, Daniel, who was killed in Vietnam in 1969; and brothers and sisters.

A memorial service and fellowship was held Feb. 18 at Little Brother Friends of the Elderly in Hancock.

An additional memorial service will be held Sunday, June 22 at 3 p.m. at American Legion Post #42, 1000 W. Lawrence Ave., Charlotte. Inurnment will be at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorial contributions may be made to Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly, 527 Hancock St., Hancock, MI 49930. Arrangments are being handled by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte.

Donna J. Russell

Donna J. Russell of Charlotte passed away Friday, March 21, 2003 following a short battle with cancer and renal failure.

Donna was born Aug. 7, 1926 to Charles and Marie Cline in Port Huron. She had lived in Charlotte since 1979. She was dedicated to her family, her students and her church. Donna retired rom Charlotte Public Schools after 28 years of service, but continued to tutor students. She loved to laugh and enjoyed a wide range of activities from bridge to MSU sports and the symphony. Even during her illness she continued to display her upbeat attitude and contagious smile. Donna was a charter member of Peace Lutheran Church in Charlotte, wher she served as a Sunday school teacher, superindendent, choir member, council member and on several fellowship committees.

She is survived by two daughters, Christine (Michael) Gilliland of Holt and Diana (Michael) Roberts of Belding; brother, Roger (Patricia) Cline of Connecticut; two grandchildren, Patrick (Lisa) Gilliland and Stacey (Mark) Stiles, both of Holt; five great-grandchildren, two nieces, one nephew and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Marie Cline.

Memorial services were held March 25 at Peace Lutheran Church in Charlotte, with graveside services following at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte.

Donna had requested that donations be made in her memory to the Peace Lutheran Church Building Fund or any charity. Arrangements were by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home of Charlotte.

G. Franklin Russell

G. Franklin Russell, age 84, of Charlotte, died Friday, Oct. 10, 2003 at his residence after a long illness.

Mr. Russell was born Oct. 16, 1918 in Ogden Township of Lenawee County, the son of Irvin and Bertha (Shannon) Russell and had been a Charlotte-area (Brookfield Township) resident since 1954. He was a lifelong farmer and also worked for the Willys Corp. in Toledo, Ohio and Johnson Lumber Co. in Charlotte. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of Ainger Bible Church, where he served for several years as the missions treasurer.

Surviving are his wife, Rosemary (Loser) Russell; four children, Gail (Roy) Chandler of Charlotte, Cheryl Lynn Wildbahn of Monmouth, Ill., Lance (Sharon) Russell of Colorado and Janice Louise (Jim) Hunter of California; five grandchildren; and two sisters, Elizabeth Konopka of Paulding, Ohio and Lucille Hodgins of Blissfield.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Roger Russell.

At Mr. Russell’s request, creamation has take place. Memorial services were held Oct.12 at Ainger Bible Church in Olivet, with Pastor Scott Brood officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to Ainger Bible Church, Far East Broadcasting or Dayspring. Arrangements were by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home of Charlotte.
