Marjorie J. Saurer

Marjorie June Saurer, 87, of Columbia S.C., formerly of Charlotte, died July 6, 2003 in Columbia, S.C.

Marjorie was born to Oscar and Vella Matson (nee Metzler) in Pleasant Lake, Steuben County, Ind. on Aug. 21, 1915. Marjorie and Reuben lived and raised their family in Charlotte. She enjoyed a family reunion held in her honor for her 87th birthday in August 2002. The following address was read for her birthday:

Four score and seven years ago our forebears, Oscar and Vella Matson, brought forth upon this continent a new baby girl, Marjorie June, conceived in Pleasant Lake, Indiana, and dedicated to the proposition that “I’m better.” Now we are engaged in a great family reunion, testing whether that little girl, or any little girl so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. And she sure can, as we are met here on the great 87th birthday of Marjorie June. We have come to dedicate a portion of her birthday cake and ice cream and the blaze of 87 candles as a tribute to Marjorie. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this. But in a larger sense we cannot dedicate, we cannot consecrate, we cannot hallow this cake and ice cream. The children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren of Marjorie and Reuben who came here, will enjoy it far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but we will never forget what we did here. It is for us, the progeny of Marjorie and Reuben, rather to be dedicated here to the unfinished work, which she has, thus far, so nobly carried on. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us-that from her humble beginnings we take increased devotion to that cause for which she here gave the last full measure of devotion-that we here highly resolve that Marjorie shall not have struggled in vain; that this family shall have a new sense of closeness; and that the progeny of Marjorie and Reuben and the extended family shall reunite again, enjoy blueberry pie and declare that “I’m better!”

Surviving are sons, John Saurer, Richard Saurer and Robert Saurer; grandchildren, Cylinda Haskins, Craig Saurer, Christie deNichola, John Saurer, Mark Saurer, Jill Turnier, Nanette Justice; great-grandchildren, Taylor Haskins, Spencer Haskins, Michael Saurer, Leslie Saurer, Kaley deNicola, Theodore deNicola, Christopher John deNicola, Anna Marjorie Saurer, Dori Turnier, Sydney Turnier, Lauren Justice, Hannah Justice, Tara Justice, and Tanner Justice; and two brothers, Clark Matson of Avilla, Ind. and Donald Matson of Kendalville, Ind.

Her husband, Reuben Saurer, preceded her in death in 1977.
