Charlotte K. Smith
Charlotte Kay Smith (nee Coats) of Narrow Lake went to be with the Lord on Monday, Dec. 1, 2003 after a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born Aug. 15, 1955 in Eaton Rapids. Charlotte worked for 15 years at Fisher Body in Lansing and enjoyed eight years working with preschoolers at Eaton Rapids Child Care Center. She loved the outdoors and being surrounded by nature. Charlotte was very active in her children’s classrooms and many extra-curricular activities, and devoted to her family and her preschool students.
Surviving are her cherished children, Courtney age 14, Dylan age 12, Dalton age 12, Hannah age 10, and Landon age 8; mother Phyllis (James) Whidden of Holt; sister Shawn Towsley of Eaton Rapids, sister Kim (Dave) Earup of Elsie, brother John (Carol) Coats of Narrow Lake, and sister Shantell Coats of Eaton Rapids; former husband Gary Smith; stepsons Michael and Derek Smith; and family friend Joan Glasgow of Eaton Rapids.
Her father, E. John Coats of Narrow Lake, preceded her in death in 1992. She will be missed by numerous friends, colleagues and extended family members.
Memorial services were held Thursday, Dec. 4 at Robbins United Methodist Church in Eaton Rapids, with Rev. Marty DeBow officiating. Memorial gifts may be sent to the Charlotte Smith Trust or the American Cancer Society Relay for Life, c/o Shawn Townsley, 208 King St., Eaton Rapids.
Edith D. Smith
Edith Diane Smith, 48, of Charlotte, died Monday, Dec. 1, 2003.
Mrs. Smith was born Feb. 27, 1955 in Germany, the daughter of John Didsbury and Marjorie Grant. She loved her Indian heritage, crafts and animals. She collected key chains.
She is survived by her husband, Daniel Smith; sons, Isreal (Angie) Hansen of Lansing, Joshua Hansen and Daniel Smith Jr.; and daughter, Dawn Smith; father John (Frances) Didsbury of Lansing; mother, Marjorie Fronckel of Lansing; and good friend, Eldonna Horvat of Lansing.
Funeral services were held Dec. 4 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Rev. Art Foster officiating. Interment was at Gresham Cemetery in Charlotte.
Jimmy D. Smith
Jimmy Dale Smith, 53, of Bellevue, died Oct. 18, 2003 at home.
He was born March 20, 1950 to Winslow and Henrietta (Rugg) Smith in Calhoun County. He worked as a machinist for over 20 years at Airway in Olivet and Marshall Brass in Marshall, Clark Equipment and Rockwell International in Battle Creek, and Parker Hanifin in Holt. Jimmy married Sherry Whitney on May 17, 1980; she survives. He enjoyed hunting, motorcycles, cars, home improvement, playing cards and spending time with his family.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Surviving him are daughter, James (Jon) Rich of Alto; sons, Daniel and Jordan Smith, both of Bellevue; grandson, Jordan Smith Jr.; stepson, Kevin Heisler of Bellevue; mother and stepfather, Henrietta and A.F. Hamacher of Battle Creek; brothers, Dan (Sue) Smith of Bellevue and Robert (Terri) Smith of Marshall; sisters, Victoria Zuidema of Kalamazoo and Janice Hamacher of Battle Creek; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held Oct. 22 at Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue, with Pastor Steve Doty of Mt. Olivet Church of Christ officiating. Interment was at Porter Cemetery in Convis Township.
Memorial contributions may be made to Good Samaritan Hospice Care.
John C. Smith Sr.
John Carl Smith Sr., 52, of Charlotte, died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003.
Mr. Smith was born Jan. 1, 1951 in Grand Rapids, the son of John D. and Julia (Muller) Smith. He was a contruction worker.
He is survived by sons, John Smith Jr. of White Cloud and Brian Smith of Nashville; daughters, Tammy Smith and Nannette Smith of Texas; four grandchildren; sisters, Virginia Schofield of Nashville and Beverly (Shane) McNary of Charlotte; and half-brother, Dave Smith of Bellevue.
Funeral services were held Jan. 10 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Vickie Hill officiating. Interment was at Needmore Cemetery in Roxand Township.
Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Margaret D. Smith
Margaret “Dicky” Smith, 65, of Bellevue, died April 12, 2003 at Battle Creek Health System.
Dicky was born March 5, 1938 to Patrick and Margaret (Satterley) Vowels in Vine Grove, Ky. She moved to Bellevue in 1955 upon her marriage to Robert Lyle Smith, whom she met during his service at Fort Knox; he survives. Dicky retired from Carfree manufacturing in Charlotte in 1998. She was an active member of Heritage Hills Bible Church and enjoyed quilting and watching her 19 grandchildren participate in various school sports.
She is survived by her husband, Robert; son, Robert E. (Cherise Brandell) Smith, and their children, Brian and Kevin Smith, and Greg Fuesz; son, Rus (Stacy) Smith and their children, Valerie and Joce; daughter, Patricia (Ray) Benjamin and their children, Preston and Shelby; son, Barry (Sue) Smith and their children, Ramsey, Lacey, Karley, Brayden, Shaylee and Kaylee; daughter, Linda (Gary) Bivens and their children, Shane, Jenna and Kelsey; son, Phil (Sarah) Smith and their children, Courtney, Coty and Kenyan; sisters, Dorothy Morris and Patty Sims; and brother, Estle Vowels, all of Vine Grove, Ky.
She was preceded in death by sister Shirley Lingo and brother Tommy Vowels.
Services were held April 14 at Heritage Hills Bible Church, with Pastor Jeff Homan officiating. Interment was at Fort Custer National Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Dicky Smith Memorial Fund at Heritage Hills Bible Church, 13015 S. M-66, Bellevue, MI 49021. Arrangements were by Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue.
Marvin F. Smith
Marvin F. Smith, 80, of Nashville, died Monday, March 10, 2003 at his residence. Mr. Smith was born March 4, 1923 in Potterville, the son of Joseph and Florence (Proctor) Smith and was raised in the Potterville area, attending Valley Farms School. He married Ruby Raines in 1943, with the marrage ending in divorce. He married Betty (Huss) Hummell April 29, 1977. He moved to Nashville in 1987 from New Smyrna Beach, Fla., where he had lived for nearly 10 years. He previously lived in the Charlotte area for many years. His employment included working for Charlotte Public Schools and the city of New Smyrna Beach, Fla. Mr. Smith was a life member of the Charlotte Eagles Lodge. He enjoyed woodworking, craft painting and playing bingo.
He is survived by his wife, Betty; son, Joseph (Marjorie) Smith of Gaylord; daughters, Annetta (Irwin) Penix of Nashville, Kathy (Duane) Thompson of Charlotte and Kay (Douglas) Babcock of Indian River; stepsons, Dannie Hummel of Charlotte and Stewart Hummel of Battle Creek; stepdaughters; Sally (Charley) Powell of Mesick and Crystal (Joel) TeVelde of Nashville; 16 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; brother, Andrew (Geisla) Smith of Lansing; and sisters, Helen (Jack) Casey of Dimondale and Rose (Merle) Davids of Ackworth, Ga.
Respecting his wishes, a memorial gathering will take place Saturday, March 15 from noon to 3 p.m. at the Charlotte Fraternal Order of Eagles Lodge, 116 Lansing St., Charlotte.
Mary Alice Smith
Mary Alice Smith, age 80, of Eaton Rapids, died Thrusday, March 20, 2003 in Charlotte. Mary was born June 23, 1922 in Chicago, IL, the daughter of Loren Plew and Margaret Gertrude (Dempsey) Simmons. She was an active member of St. Peter Church and a den mother back in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, George H. Smith, III in 1983; sister, Helen Souers and a brother, James Simmons.
Surviving are 4 sons, Loren (Shirley) Smith, George (Maureen) Smith both of Florida, Daniel (Kimberly) Smith of Eaton Rapids, Michael (Julie) Smith of Lansing; 7 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Mass of the Christian Burial was prayed on Monday, March 24, 2003, at St. Peter Church, Eaton Rapids, with Fr. Bennett Constatine as Celebrant. Graveside services followed at Moore Park Cemetery, Three Rivers. Those desiring may make contributions to either the St. Peter Church Building Fund or Alzheimer’s Disease in memory of Mary Alice Smith. The family was served by the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids.
Mary A. Smith
Mary Anna Smith, 95, of Charlotte, died Friday, Oct. 10, 2003.
Mrs. Smith was the eldest child of Frank and Josefa (Pospisil) Vrbensky, born Feb. 11, 1908 in Clarkson, Neb. She and her husband Joseph F. Smith, who preceded her in death in 1957, were Charlotte-area farmers. She was a member of the Eaton County Farm Bureau and St. Mary Catholic Church.
She is servived by her daughters, Frances Madry, Mary (Donald) Wadsten and Anne (Gerald) Kent; four grandchildren, Mary (Glenn) Shook, Kristine (Jeffrey) Hynes, Teresa (Thomas) Gloden, John (Denise) Kent; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph; daughter, Elsie in 2002; son-in-law, Louis Madry in 2000; brothers, Frank, Joseph and John; and a sister, Ann.
Funeral services were held Oct. 13, 2003 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Charlotte. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Mary Building Fund, Eaton County Medical Facility Activities Fund or Hayes Green Beach Memorial Hospital.
