Richard F. Smith
Richard Floyd Smith, 67, of Sunfield, died Thursday, Sept. 25, 2003.
Mr. Smith was born Aug. 17, 1936 in Charlotte, the son of Leon R. and Elizabeth (Dean) Smith. He worked in construction as a cement finisher and roofer.
He is survived by his wife, Debra (Hartin) Smith and 16 children.
There will be no services. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home of Charlotte.
Alice Marie Snow
Alice M. Snow, age 78, of Eaton Rapids, died Thursday, July 10, 2003 at a Lansing hospital. Born November 21, 1924 in Eaton Rapids, the daughter of Ralph and Elsie Raymer. Alice was a member of the Robbins United Methodist Church in Eaton Rapids and was a former Red Cross Volunteer. She was preceded in death by her husband Jerry in 1995.
Surviving are 3 children, Kathy (Steve) Bryce of St. Meyers, FL., Gary (Linda) Snow of Grand Rapids and Jayne (Kirk) Orr of Wixom; 8 grand-children and 5 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; special friend, Deke Miller of Eaton Rapids.
Funeral services were Monday, July 14th at 11:00 a.m. from the Robbins United Methodist Church with Rev. Jeff Nunham, officiating. Burial followed in the Bunker Cemetery in Eaton Rapids. The family was served through the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids. For those desiring memorial contributions may be made to the Robbins United Methodist Church, in memory of Alice M. Snow.
Harold E. Snow
Harold E. Snow, age 68 of Eagle Point, Oregon formerly from Eaton Rapids, died February 19, 2003. Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Barbara, three sons and three daughters; 9 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; 4 sisters, Jeannine Smith of Eaton Rapids, Joyce Favero of Charlotte, Flora (Dick) Alwood of Delton, Evelyn Sisco of Dimondale; 2 brothers, Bill (Polly) Snow of Tompkins Center and Sam (Jane) Snow of Eaton Rapids. He was preceded in death by his father, mother and brother.
A memorial service was held February 21, 2003 at Lake Creek, Oregon.
Harold N. Snow
Harold N. Snow, 81, of Olivet, died April 14, 2003 at Battle Creek Health System.
Mr. Snow was born Jan. 9, 1922 in Nashville, the son of Willis and Christiana (Brown) Snow. He was raised in the Nashville and Middleville areas and attended schools there, graduating from Middleville High School in 1940. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps/Paratroopers during World War II. He lived in the Olivet area for the past 50 years. Mr. Snow was employed at Eaton Manufacturing Co. in Battle Creek for 30 years, retiring in 1981. He was also engaged in farming for many years. He fought in the featherweight division of the Golden Gloves Boxing Association as a young man, winning numberous fights and honors.
He is survived by sons, Tim (Debra) Snow and Ted Snow, both of Olivet, and Jerry (Valerie) Snow of Springport; daughters, Sylvia (Kipp) Austin of Battle Creek and Alice Snow of Eaton Rapids; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grand-children; brothers, Homer (Mary) Snow and Hugh (Pug) Snow, both of Nashville; sister, Marguerite Wallace of Nashville; and nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents; son, Chuckie Snow; brother, Howard Snow; and sister, Marian Johnson.
Services were held April 18 at Maple Valley Chapel in Nashville, with Rev. Kenneth Vaught officiating. Burial was at Lakeview Cemetery in Nashville, with military honors.

Gene Snyder Sr.
Gene Carl Snyder Sr., age 66, of Charlotte died May 24, 2003.
Mr. Snyder was born July 2, 1936 in Hannah. He was a former member of the Charlotte Lions Club, Charlotte Area Senior Center, Charlotte American Legion Post #42, and attended St. John’s Episcopal Church. He had been employed for 15 years at St. Lawrence Hospital, from where he retired due to ill health. Mr. Snyder was an avid euchre player.
He is survived by his wife, Judy Snyder; sons, Gene (Renee) Snyder Jr. of Brighton and Carl Snyder of Charlotte; step-son, James (Wendy) Dillion of Charlotte; grandchildren, Nickcole (Cameron) Bulock and Teia Snyder of Charlotte, Grace and J.D. Galloway of Jackson, Claire, Sam and Lilly Snyder of Brighton, Travis and Jackson Dillon of Ohio; brothers, Richard (Lula) Snyder of Kingsley and Donald (Joanne) Snyder of Traverse City; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and beloved pets, Boucer and Yorkie.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service was held May 29 at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Charlotte.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society or Hayes Green Beach Hospital. Arrangements were by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home of Charlotte.
Paul R. Sobleskey
Paul Raymond Sobleskey, 44, formerly of Charlotte, died Friday, May 9, 2003.
Paul was born Nov. 26, 1958 in Ionia, the son of Richard and Ellen (Asher) Sobleskey. He graduated from Charlotte High School in 1977 and worked for several years at Callender & Dornbos, Inc. and then later as a driver for Midwest Carpet Brokers of Potterville. He was recently employed by EATRAN Bus Line. He was an avid deer hunter and loved watching fooball and NASCAR with his son, Ryan.
He is survived by two sons, Ryan and Kyle; two daughters, Courtney and Blair; grandson, Hayden; mother, Ellen Sobleskey of Charlotte; father, Richard (Elaine) Sobleskey of Charlotte; three brothers, Rick (Carrie) of Grand Ledge, Allen (Branda) of Diamondale, Kevin (Cheryl) of Charlotte; four sisters, Carolyn (Rick) Barrera and Marcia (Tim) Ralya, both of Grand Ledge, Laurie (Paul) Davis of Charlotte and Kris (Matt) Petrelles of Hagerstown, Md.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his son, Lance, Sept. 1, 1998.
Private family services were held.
Memorial contributions may be made to a fund for the family, in care of Ellen Sobleskey. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Richard “Rick” Soules II
Richard “Rick” Soules II, age 37, of Eaton Rapids, died Sunday, April 27, 2003. Rick was born September 22, 1965 in Charlotte. He was formerly employed with the Grand Rapids Sash & Door Co. in Holt. Rick was an avid fisherman, enjoyed cooking and spending time with his 3 boys.
Surviving him are his wife, Elizabeth Fran (Wells) Soules; 3 sons, Adam Lee, Andrew Richard, and Alex Wayne; mother, Beverly Jean (Richard) Vincent of Eaton Rapids; father, Richard (Julie) Soules and Lansing; grandparents, Austin & Lola Soules of Charlotte; grandmother, Norma Soules of Traverse City; sister, Tracy Soules of Eaton Rapids; 2 nephews, Jason & Tyler Bliss; many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, May 1, 2003 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the support of Rick’s children in memory of Rick Soules II. Envelopes may be mailed to the funeral home.
Wayne E. Southward
Wayne E. “Joe” Southward, 78, of Olivet, died Monday, March 10, 2003 at Oaklawn Hospial in Marshall.
Joe was born March 31, 294 in Brookfield Towship, Eaton County, the son of Earl and Melita (Wight) Southward, and was a lifelong Eaton County resident. He attended the Mulvany Rural School and Bellevue schools, and graduated in 1944 from Charlotte High School.
Mr. Southward was a retired mechanic, having worked for the Starks & Goodrich Ford dealership in Olivet for 22 years, and then the Grand Trunk Railroad, from where he retired June 30, 1986 after 20 years of service. He served in the U.S. Army occupation forces in Japan at the end of World War II.
Mr. Southward was a member of the Boilin’ T’s Club and attended Olivet Congregational Church. He was married to Jane Hubert on March 29, 1953 and they were going to celebrate their 50th anniversary March 29 this year.
Surviving are his wife, Jane (Hubert) Southward; one nephew, Dennis Southward of Eaton Rapids; five nieces, Jean Lake and Joan Doxtader of Charlotte, Rose Ross of Carlisle, Ohio, Dora Roberts and Donna Orem, both of San Antonio, Texas; and several great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by brothers, John, Francis and Edward; and sisters, Theresa Wood and Laura Reefman.
Funeral services were held March 14 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Rev. Roy Backus of Olivet Congregational Church officiating. Interment was at Perry Cemetery in Brookfield Township.
Memorial contributions may be made to Olivet Congregational Church, the American Heart Association or the charity of one’s choice.
Athalia C. Spelbring
Athalia Catherine Spelbring, 87, of Cordova, Tenn., formerly of Sebring Fla. and Charlotte, died Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003 at Baptist East Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.
Mrs. Spelbring was born Oct. 30, 1915 in Charlotte, the daughter of Floyd and Gladys (Wile) Waddell. She was a gradutate of Charlotte High School and Jackson Business University, and was a retired legal secretary. She enjoyed jacing, traveling and camping. Surviving are her husband, Leonard Spelbring of Cordova; daughter, Roberta “Bobbie” Joyner of Cordova; son, Douglas Barnhill Sr. of Parma; stepsons, David Spelbring of Glendale, Calif. And Daniel Spelbring of Uniontown, Ky.; seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Rena Spelbring of Terre Haute, Ind.; and brothers-in-law, Stanley Spelbring of Sebring, Fla. and Ross Spelbring of Indiana. She was preceded in death by husbands, Robert Barnhill and Nelson Mohr. Funeral services were held Feb. 21 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Rev. Jack Fugate of Pope United Medhodist Church officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or Alzheimer’s Association.
