Horace G. Stafford

Horace Gilbert “Bud” Stafford, of Charlotte, died Sunday, May 11, 2003 after a long illness.

Mr. Stafford was born June 17, 1922 in Berkley. He served in the 38th Infantry Regiment during World War II and saw service in Burma, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan and Palestine. He received serval medals, including one from Russia and one from China, and was a former commander of the DAV and American Legion, and a member of the CBI (China, Burma, India) Association. Mr. Stafford graduated from Central Michigan University and taught for 31 years (25 in Charlotte) in English, biology, ddrafting and woodworking. He operated ABAT Gun Shop in Charlotte and was a member of the Masons. Mr. Stafford was a long-time member and past senior warden of St. John’s Episcopal Church. He enjoyed travel, camping, skiing, music and woodworking.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; one sister, Ruth McDaid; three sons, William (Nancy) Katon, Martin (Mary Beth) Katon and Stephen (Deborah) Stafford; one daughter, Cynthia (Todd) Lowe; two step-daughters, Susan Stuart and Karen (Timothy) Endres; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Horace and Bertha (Hodgkinson) Stafford and his sister, Helen Humphrey.

Private burial was held at Deepdale Cemetery in Lansing. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 22 at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 201 W. Shepherd St., Charlotte. Friends and former students are invited to attend the service to share in remembering “Old Dad Stafford.”

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. John’s Episcopal Church or Hayes Green Beach Hospital. Arrangements are by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home of Charlotte.

Edgar Harold Stahl Sr.

Edgar Harold Stahl Sr., age 78 of Eaton Rapids, died Friday, February 14, 2003. He was born May 27, 1924 in Traverse City, the son of Harold Edgar and Jennie (Holcomb) Stahl. Mr. Stahl served in the Navy during World War II and was a former member of the Eaton Rapids V.F.W. He retired as a Supervisor for Motor Wheel in Lansing. Preceding him in death were two children, Margaret and Norman; two brothers, Fred and Charles and parents.

Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Freda; 3 children, Mary (Michael) Carater of Belgrade, MN, Jennie (David) Hollister of Bellevue and Edgar H. Stahl of Hudson, FL; 6 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild; 3 sisters, Audrey (Emerson) Dillon of Kalamo, Rosemond Lloyd of Eaton Rapids and Melissa Scutt of Lansing; sister-in-law, Alma Stahl of Eaton Rapids and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be Tuesday, February 18, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at the Rosehill Cemetery in Eaton Rapids with Rev. Fr. Ben Constatine as celebrant. Arragements were by the Skinner Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids. For those desiring, memorial gifts may be made to the Eaton Rapids Medical Center in memory of Edgar Harold Stahl Sr.

Dorothy M. Stark

Dorothy Mildred Stark, 92, of Charlotte, died Friday, Oct. 17, 2003.

Mrs. Stark was born May 20, 1911 in Battle Creek, the daughter of Ralph and Grace (Jex) Hoag. She enjoyed following her grandchildren and great-grandchildren to their sports and band activities. She was a member of Crossroads Church, Kitchen Band of Charlotte, Grandmother’s Bowling League, Brookfield Extension and superintendent of Senior Citizens Open Class Booth where she displayed her needle work and crafts as the oldest exhibitor at the Eaton County Fair. Dorothy was also a member of the former Center Eaton United Methodist Church.

She is survived by son, Norris “Cy” (Shirley) Stark of Hastings; daughter, Zoe Ann Baxter of Baraboo, Wis.; six grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Norris Stark in 1977.

Funeral services were held Oct. 20 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Rev. Mike Arnold officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte.

Memorial contributions may be made to Crossroads Church or the charity of one’s choice.

Eilene Starr

Eilene Starr, 72, of Charlotte, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2003.

Mrs. Starr was born May 4, 1931 in Grand Ledge, the daughter of Ray and Helen (Robinson) Tanner. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, active in the Alter Society and a 4-H leader for many years. She enjoyed painting, knitting, ceramics and crafts.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Jerry; children, Denis (Karen) of Olivet, Kathy (Jim) Pion of Olivet, Tim (Sherry) of Charlotte, Mark (Cheryl) of Charlotte, Karen (Tony) Southward of Charlotte, Daniel (JoAnn) of Adrian, Chris (Shelly) of Charlotte, Mary (Doug) Campbell of Olivet, James (Lisa) of Eaton Rapids; 28 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; her sister, Norma (Fran) Schmidt of Florida; and brother, Larry (Faith) Tanner of Sutton Bay.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Audrey Kendall, and brother, Kendall Tanner.

A funeral mass was celebrated Dec. 24 at St. Mary Catholic Church, with Rev. Fr. Denis Spitzley officiating. Interment followed at West Carmel Cemetery.

If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Michigan Heart Association or Eaton Community Hospice; envelopes are available at the funeral home. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home of Charlotte.

Margaret E. Stetler

Margaret E. Stetler, age 88, of Charlotte, died Thursday, Nov. 20, 2003 at the Martin Luther Holt Home.

Mrs. Stetler was born April 5, 1915 in Olivet, the daughter of George and Bessie (Mellor) Bradley and returned to live in the Charlotte are in 1978. She was a graduate of Olivet High School who enjoyed traveling.

Surviving are her daughter, Shirley (Ted) Hanlon of Grand Ledge; two grandchildren, Trish (Matt) Lichon of Rockford and Michael Hanlon of Chicago, Ill.; and her exceptional caregivers at Country Acres AFC Home and Martin Luther Holt Home.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley Stetler in 1993; twin sister, Mary Chase; and sister, Virginia Jean Morgan.

Funeral services were held Nov. 24 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Pastor Mike Arnold officiating. Interment was at Riverside Cemetery in Bellevue.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Martin Luther Holt Home, Hayes Green Beach Hospital or Great Lakes Hospice.

Jo Steward

Jo Steward, 68, of St. Louis, Mich., died Sunday, June 29, 2003 at Schnepps Healthcare Center in St. Louis.

Mrs. Steward was born May 6, 1935 in Sunfield, the daughter of Leonard and Irma (Ward) Joppie. She graduated from Vermontville High School with the class of 1953 and married Doug Steward in Vermontville on June 12, 1954. She lived in St. Louis for the past 37 years. Mrs. Steward was a devoted associate at JC Penney’s in Alma for 30 years, retiring Oct. 31, 1996. She loved horses and all of her animals and was known as a wonderful mother and grandmother who loved to spend time with her family.

Surviving are her husband, Doug Steward of St. Louis; four children, Cheryl (Gary) Havenstein of Maryland, Ron (Deb) Steward of Alma, Michele (Rich) Patterson of Mason and Jon (Erin) Steward of Ithaca; seven grandchildren, Melissa Jo Steward, Kenzie Marie Steward, Ashley M. Patterson, Holly Mrie Havenstein, Jeff Steward Havenstein, Robby Steward Havenstein and Thomas Jon Steward; three sisters, Leona (Bob) McNally of Marshall, Louise (Charles) Viele and Barb (Larry) Musser, both of Vermontville; one brother, Bud (Tina) Joppie of Nashville; and good friends, including Jackie Croton and Sue Daly.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Neil Joppie.

Funeral services were held July 2 at Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Louis Chapel, with Pastor Lillian French officiating. Interment was at Sunfield Cemetery in Sunfield.

Herschel “Red” Stewart

Herschel “Red” Stewart, 83 years of age, died peacefully at his home. He had lived in Eaton Rapids over thirty years, formerly of Lansing, retiring from construction. Mr. Stewart served in WWII as a Corporal in the 66th Armor Regiment (Infantry). His decorations included the Purple Heart, American Defense Ribbon, European-African Middle Eastern Theatre with five Bronze Stars and a Good Conduct Ribbon.

He is survived by his loving wife, Faye; mother-in-law, Mary Collins; daughters, Judy Smith and Peggy Kellman; three grandchildren, Justin Smith, Rachel Smith, and Tim Yeomans; five great-grandchildren; sisters Virginia Davis, Mavis Terry; brother, Gordon Stewart and many nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed as a devoted man to his family and country.

Services will be held Thursday at 1:00 p.m. from the Skinner Funeral Home with Rev. Stephen F. Ezop of the Heartland Home Care & Hospice officiating. Interment will be in Rosehill Cemetery, Eaton Rapids. Visitation will be Wednesday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to Heartland Home Health Care & Hospice. Memorials are available at the funeral home.

Wanda Stewart

Wanda Delores “Mama” Stewart, age 66, of Charlotte, died Monday, Aug. 4, 2003.

Mrs. Stewart was born Jan. 22, 1937 in Battle Creek, the daughter of Glenn and Olga (Showers) Goehler. She was a cook and kitchen helper for G & G Catering and worked for Oldsmobile. She was a member of American Legion #42 Auxiliary, where she loved to play bingo while the family worked in the kitchen, and was a former member of the Char Lanes bowling league.

She is survived by her husband, Jimmy Stewart of Charlotte; daughters, Karla (Randy) Ettinger of Olivet and Barbie (Joe) DenHerder of Charlotte; sons, Kim Stewart of Charlotte, Jimmy (Louise) Stewart Jr. of Jackson and Joe Stewart of Charlotte; 21 grandchildren and four great-grand-children; sisters, Lorena Lyman of Battle Creek, Merna Grim of Olivet and Norma (Jack) Ryan of Battle Creek; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by son Jay Stewart in 1995.

Funeral services were held aug. 8 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Charles Jenson officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte.

Memorial contributions may be made to the National Kidney Foundation.
