Michael G. Strang

Michael Gene Strang, 61, lifelong Charlotte resident, recently of Spring Hill, Fla., died April 21, 2003.

Mr. Strang was born March 8, 1942 in Lansing, the son of Walter and Bernice (Cramer) Miner. He served with the U.S. Marine Corps and worked as an electrician through IBEW Local 665 until his retirement. He belonged to VFW Post 6132 in Lansing and Harley Owners of America.

He is survived by sons, Troy (Jody) Strang of Olivet, Travis (Jennifer) Strang of Dexter; five grandchildren, Trevor, Trent, Paige, Alex and Colin; mother, Bernice Miner of Lansing; sisters, Debbie Fossum of Onondaga, Candice (Hugh) Meinema of Grand Rapids, Marjorie Osborn of Kentwood, Diane Lynagh of Kalamazoo; special friends, Carolyn Manns and Doug Thompson; and former wife of 27 years, Melody Eschtruth of Eaton Rapids.

He was preceded in death by his father Walter “Fritz” Miner and his half brother John Strang.

Funeral services were held April 25 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Pastor Kevin Hall officicating. Interment was at Bosworth Cemetery in Olivet.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mid Michigan Hospice House. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.

Millie B. Sumner

Millie B. Sumner age 96, of Eaton Rapids, died Friday, December 26, 2003 in Lansing. Millie was born July 21, 1907 in West Philadelphia, PA the daughter of Mark and Gertrude (Peet) Bush. Mrs. Sumner was an LPN, teacher and owner of Ivy Manor Adult Care Home of Story Book Acres. She was very active in her church, holding several leadership positions.

Millie was preceded in death by her husband, C.J. Sumner; great grandson, Zane Gardner; son-in-law, Larry Henderson; sisters, Margaret Mondics, Anabel Schneider, brothers, Earl, Vernon & Kenneth Bush.

Surviving are 2 daughters, Miladean Leifermann of Florida, Lorene Henderson of Eaton Rapids; 7 grandchildren, and several great grandchildren; brother, Francis Bush of Florida; sister, Nancy Patterson of NC.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003, at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids with Pastor Larry Yeagley officiating. Interment will follow at Munger Cemetery. Those desiring may make contributions to the charity of your choice in memory of Millie B. Sumner.

Dewey Lee Sundberg

Dewey Lee Sundberg, 66, of Marshall died on Thursday, Sept. 18, 2003 at his home. Mr. Sundberg was born on March 14, 1937 in Marshall to Hiram H. and Leatha A. (Dewey) Sundberg.

He was a lifelong resident of the area. On Feb. 19, 1954 he married Phyllis Lindsey in Kentucky. She survives. Mr. Sundberg worked most of his life as a heavy equipment operator. Most recently he had worked for Leydens Excavating. He had also formally worked at Advanced Paving in Lansing.

Mr. Sundberg enjoyed his free time as a member of the Marshall Moose. His main hobbies were, fishing, muchroom hunting, working on lawn mowers and tractors, and spending time with his family. His family described him as “a practical joker. He was always playing a joke on someone in the family.”

He is vurvived by his wife Phyllis of Marshall, sons, Junior sundberg of Battle Creek, John (Diane) Sundberg of Lewiston, Michigan, Mark (Carla) Sundberg of marshall, Keith Sundberg of Marshall, Kevin (Cathy) Sundberg of Marshall, 11 grandchildren, a sister, Norma Hindenach of Battle Creek, sister-in-law, Zella Sundberg of Marshall, a brother-in-law, Wayne Harrington of Olivet, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Gladys Scarborough, Grace Harrington, June Cole, and brothers, DeWayne Sundberg and Clifford Sundberg.

Visitation for Mr. Sundberg will take place on Sunday, September 21, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home.

The family will be present to receive visitors from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services celebrating his life will take place on Monday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with Rev. George Luciani officiating. Interment will follow at Oakridge Cemetery. Mr. Sundberg’s 11 grand-children will be serving as pallbearers and honorary pallbearers. Those who wish may make memorials to the American Lung Association. Assistance with memorials is available at the Kempf Funeral Home.

Max D. Sutherland

Max Dorr Sutherland, age 78, of Grand Ledge, passed away March 19, 2003 at his home.

Max was a graduate of Charlotte High School, class of 1942; a retired Hall of Fame farmer, owning three Centennial Farms; and a member of Grand Ledge First United Methodist Church and Eaton County Farm Bureau. He and his wife Vi were host parents of a foreign exchange student from Japan (Lisa Morita) for seven years.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Viola; one son, Scott Sutherland of Linden; one daughter, Sara (Brian) Meyer of Grand Ledge; four grandchildren, Ross Meyer, Samantha Meyer, Mason Meyer and Reanne Sutherland; three sisters, Nettie Woodworth of Charlotte, Joyce (LeRoy) Flessner of Woodland and Charlotte MacMann of Tuscon, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Donna Caughey.

Funeral services were held March 22 at the Grand Ledge First United Methodist Church, with Rev. W.J. “Bill” Amundsen and Rev. Kathy Kursch officiating. Interment followed at Oakwood Cemetery in Grand Ledge.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Grand Ledge First United Methodist Church Memorial Fund. Arrangements were by Peters & Murray Funeral Home in Grand Ledge.

Viola Sutherland

Viola “Vi” Sutherland, 75, passed away July 16, 2003 at her home.

Mrs. Sutherland was a gradute of Olivet High School, class of 1947 and Western Michigan University. She was a former school teacher for 19 years; a member of the Grand Ledge First United Methodist Church and Grand Ledge Chapter #14 OES; and was known for her cooking. Vi and her husband Max were host parents of a foreign exchange student from Japan (Lisa Morita) for seven years.

She is survived by one son, Scott Sutherland of Linden; one daughter, Sara (Brian) Meyer of Grand Ledge; four grandchildren, Ross Meyer, Samantha Meyer, Mason Meyer and Reanne Sutherland; and one sister, Violet (Clyde) Ray of Charlotte.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Max, on March 19, 2003; and three brothers, Albert, Victor and Fred Nelson.

Funeral services were held July 19 at Grand Ledge First United Methodist Church, with Rev. Molly Turner and Rev. Kathy Kursch officiating. Interment followed at Oakwood Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Grand Ledge First United Methodist Church Memorial Fund. Arrangements were by Peters & Murray Funeral Home of Grand Ledge.

Irma G. Swan

Irma Gail (Lawhead) Swan, age 81 of Charlotte, died Monday, May 5, 2003.

Mrs. Swan was born June 20, 1921 in Ingham Township, the daughter of Guy and Etta (Hance) Walker. She was a 1940 graduate of Dimondale High School and Western Michigan University in 1966. She was a teacher for more than 20 years in and around the Vermontville area. Irma Gail loved horses and was an accomplished equestrian, a member of Midwest Dressage Association and the owner of Freedom Winds Farms of Charlotte.

Surviving are sons, Jack (Darla) Swan of Colorodo, David Lawhead of Onsted, Dennis (Olivia) Lawhead of Eaton Rapids; daughter, Dorothy Parsley of Florida; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; and sister, Betty Laverty of Potterville.

Funeral services were held May 9 at Pray Funeral Home, with Rev. Karen Wheat officiating. Interment was at Dimondale Cemetery in Dimondale.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Milton C. Taber

Milton C. Taber, age 81 of Springport, passed away January 27, 2003 at his home. He was born November 22, 1921 in Springport to Charles & Hazel (Smith) Taber. In 1951 he married Maxine (Easton). For 27 years, Milton was employed at Miller’s Tool and Die and for 22 years he was a tool and die maker for Oldsmobile. He served his country during WWII in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of V.F.W. Springport #6056 and enjoyed mowing his lawn, activities, hunting, fishing and his grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his parents, one sister and two brothers.

Survivors include his wife, Maxine Taber; daughters, Christin Taber of Boston, MS, Luann Pesonen of Denver, CO, Carol Taber, Linda Klein-Schmidt and Sue Taber all of California, Brenda Roy of Mt. Pleasant, MI and Stephanie Forner of Jackson, MI; sons, Bill Taber of Colorado and Todd Taber of Springport; sister, Madeline Jenson of Las Vegas, NV; special friend Bobbi Mead; 10 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held Friday, January 31, 2003 at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home, Albion, with Rev. Bob Donor officiating. Memorials are suggested to Jackson & Oaklawn Hospice or Alzheimer’s Foundation.

Virginia Irene Tague

Virginia Irene Tague, age 83 of Dayton, Ohio, formerly of Eaton Rapids, died Tuesday, July 8, 2003. Miss Tague was born in Switzerland County in Jefferson Township, graduating from Vevay High School in 1938. She attended National College in Kansas City, Missouri, receiving her Major in Sociology & Social Work in 1943. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology & Education in 1956, from Waynesburg College in Waynesburg, PA. She later attended Emory University, receiving degrees in Social Work, attending YWCA National Training Institute at Lake Erie College in Painesville, Ohio in 1956, later attending YWCA Administrators Seminar, National Board YWCA in New York City in 1966. She moved to Eaton Rapdis, Michigan in 1979 and served as the Director of Senior Citizens Affairs until she retired in 1981. She maintained her own home in Eaton Rapids at 606 Outer Drive, enjoying the beauty of nature around her home, Virginia became ill in November 2002 and moved to Dayton, Ohio to be close to family members.

A funeral was held on Friday, July 11 at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home, Vevay, Indiana with interment in Vevay Cemetery, Vevay, Indiana.
