Edith Taylor
Edith Taylor, 76, of Battle Creek, died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003.
She was born March 30, 1927 in Frankfort, Germany, the daughter of Heinrich and Sophia Erna (Smith) Froeber. Edith was a war bride, married 52 years to Harold A. Taylor, who passed away March 1, 2003. She was known for being a wonderful wife and mother.
She is survived by two sons, Roy (Nilsa) Taylor of Huntsville, Ala. And Randy Taylor of Battle Creek; daughter, Patricia (David Hahn of Norfold, Va.; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Oct. 2 at Richard A. Henry Funeral Home in Battle Creek. Interment was at Fort Custer National Cemetery.
Harold A. Taylor
Harold A. Taylor, 75, of Battle Creek, died Saturday, March 1, 2003 at Battle Creek Health System.
Mr. Taylor was born Jan. 11, 1928 in Charlotte, the son of Mark and Leone (Strickland) Taylor, He graduated from Walton Twp. Unit High School in 1946, and made a career of the military, serving in the Army from April 1, 1946 until he retired as a master sergeant April 30, 1966. Mr. Taylor married Edith Froeber Sept. 3, 1951 in Frankfort, Germany.
Surviving are his wife, Edith (Froeber) Taylor; sons, Roy (Milsa) Taylor of Huntsville, Ala. And Randy Taylor of Battle Creek; daughter, Patricia (David) Hahn of Norfolk, Va.; three grandchildren; and sisters, Marjorie Mills of Battle Creek, and Shirley Casler and Dorthea Barker, both of Charlotte.
Services were held March 6 at Richard A. Henry Funeral Home in Battle Creek, with Rev. David Dryer officiating. Interment was at Ft. Custer National Cemetery, with military committal by the Ft. Custer National Cemetery Honor Guard.
Waunetta “Een” Tennant
Wauneta “Een” Tennant, 75, of Onondaga (formerly of Springport) passed away from cancer on Monday, July 14, 2003 at her home. She was being cared for by Richard Tennant, her husband of 23 years, and family members. Een married Harold “Bud” Hoag in 1949 and moved to Springport to help run the family business, Hoag & Sons’ Book Bindery. Bud preceded her in death in 1957. Een continued to work at the bindery as Operations Manager for 52 years until her health forced her to stop. She was married to Raymond Fagan, Jr. from 1959 until 1973. Raymond preceded her in death in 1996. In 1979 Waunetta married Richard Tennant, who survives her.
Een dedicated her life to her work and her family. She enjoyed fishing, garage sales, Las Vegas and bowling. She unselfishly shared all that she had with her family and friends. There are many who considered her a second mom. Words could never express the qualities she possessed or the appreciation her family has for her, she is already dearly missed.
She is survived by her children: Joleen Hoag (Ken) Bills, Onondaga; Darr Hoag, Tompkins; Dorci Hoag (Mike) Franks, Eaton Rapids; Jeana Fagan (Pombier) Rogers, Springport; Kyle (Lori) Fagan, Eaton Rapids; Kari Sue Fagan, Tekonsha; Charlie Patton, Springport; Robert Brown, Springport; Rebecca Tennant (Jim) Phillips, Jackson; Robert (Alison) Tennant, England; Daniel (Veronica) Tennant, Onondaga. Grandchildren: Jeff Brown, Tony Brown, Krystal Hoag, Shawn Patton, Etahn Franks, Burdette Pombier, Annie Pombier Snyder, Travis Pombier, Danielle Pombier, Charley Rogers, Summer Rogers, Tami Stout, Xanna Fagan, Shane Fagan, Drew Tennant, Josh Tennant, Bradley Tennant. Great-Grandchildren: Kati, Alisha, Michael, Michelle, Brittany, Cody, Savannah, Christifor, Matthew, Analiese, Madison, Autumn.
Leslie A. Thies
Leslie August Thies, 82, of Charlotte, died Sunday, Nov. 9, 2003.
Mr. Thies was born Sept. 19, 1921 in Brooklyn, N.Y., the son of August and Gladys Thies. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a former chief of the Oldwick Fire Co. in Jew Jersey and was parts manager for the Holland Hitch Company. He enjoyed woodworking, reading western novels and loved horses.
He is survived by his wife of 17 years, Lillian (Johnson); daughter, Cheryl (Bryan) Steele of Unadilla, N.Y.; sons, Leslie (Carolyn) Thies and Richard Thies, both of Franklin, N.Y.; nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; step-daughters, Jean Martin and Sharon (Carol) Mensing of Scotts Bluff, Neb.; step-sons, Jon Feller of Clinton, N.J. and Chris Filler of Lead, S.D.; six step-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Mildred in 1981 and two grandchildren. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home of Charlotte.
Gale L. Throne
Gale L. Throne, 83, of Lansing, went to be with the Lord on Friday, Dec. 26, 2003.
Mr. Throne was born June 13, 1920 in Pioneer, Ohio, the son of Guy and Lulu (Masters) Throne. Gale was a long-time member of the South
Baptist Church in Lansing, an active volunteer in Ingham Regional Medical Center, a member of the Breton Woods Garden Club, and served during World War II in the U.S. Army from 1942-1946. Prior to retirement, he was self-employed as a designer/salesman of home remodeling.
He leaves behind his wife, Virginia; daughter, Rebecca Throne of Lake Placid, Fla.; son, Darrell (Nancy) Martin of Hinton, W.Va.; daughter, Karen (Rodney) Randall of Charlotte; and daughter, Susan (Steven) Griggs of Centennial, Colo.; 10 grandchildren and one great-grand-daughter, and brother, Rex (Erma) Throne of Pittsburgh, Pa.
He was preceded in death by sister Lorine Benton.
Funeral services were held De. 30 at South Baptist Church in Lansing, with Pastor Don Denyes officiating. Interment was at Floral Grove Cemetery in Pioneer, Ohio.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to Eaton Community Hospice House or Ingham Regional Medical Center Hospice. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home of Charlotte.
Stanley L. Thornton
Stanley Lynn Thornton, age 40, of Charlotte, formerly of Lansing, died Sunday, Sept. 7, 2003 at his residence from natural causes.
Stanley was born May 18, 1963 in Lansing, the son of Wayne and Bernadine (Hammond) Thornton and had been a Charlotte resident since 1971, coming from Lansing. He worked as a maintenance man in the Lawrence Manor Trailer Park and was an avid Nascar fan, with Dale Earnhardt Sr. being his favorite driver.
Surviving are his wife, Dawn (Lawrence) Thornton; daughter, Patricia Shaffer of Battle Creek; son, Billie Sandborn; grandchildren, Jordan James Olin and Ashley Shaffer; two sisters, Bonnie Bennett of Lake Odessa and Pamela Wood of Lansing; mother and father-in-law, Dixie and Mike Thompson of Battle Creek; sister and brother-in-law, Debbie and Harold Hathaway of Battle Creek; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services were held Sept. 12 at the Charlotte Assembly of God, with Rev. Mark Woodbury officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the family. Arrangments were by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home of Charlotte.
Virginia E. Thornton
Virginia E. Thornton, 84, of Charlotte, died Monday, Feb. 17, 2003.
Mrs. Thornton was born June 19, 1918 in Lansing, the daughter of Clyde and Mina (Gates) Warren. Surviving are two sons, Russell (Sharon) Thornton of DeWitt and Daniel (Kim) Thornton of Charlotte; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; one brother, Phillip Warren of Shaftsburg; and one sister, Patricia Kennedy of Hastings. She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Thornton in 1989 and by a step-son, James Thornton.
Graveside services were held Feb. 19 at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements were by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte.
Galen G. Tibbett
Galen G. Tibbett, 72, of Charlotte, died Saturday, Sept. 6, 2003.
Mr. Tibbett was born June 21, 1931 in Lyons, Ind., the son of Clayton and Dorothy (Yancey) Tibbett. He was a member of the First Congregational Church, Charlotte Masonic Lodge #120, OES Chapter #218, Eaton County Shrine Club, and Rotary Club of Charlotte, Mr. Tibbett served on the Charlotte Industrial Development Board for many years and was always willing to help others. He was co-owner of Gale Briggs, Inc. retiring in 1990. Mr. Tibbett enjoyed golfing and outings to Mt. Pleasant and Las Vegas.
Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Mary Alice (Briggs); daughter, Margo (John) Whalen of Houghton Lake; and brother, Clyde (Barbara) Tibbett of Bloomfield, Ind.
Funeral services were held Sept. 10 at First Congregatinal Church of Charlotte, with Pastor Tom Jones officiating. Interment was a Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Congregational Church Endowment Board and Hayes Green Beach Hospital; envelopes are available at the funeral home.
Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Barbara B. Toland
Barbara Belle Toland, 99, of Onekama, formerly of Ann Arbor, died Thursday, April 3, 2003 at the Laurels of Mt. Pleasant.
She was born Aug. 17, 1903 in Flint, the daughter of Newell and Genevieve (Dennison) Smith. She spent her childhood in Charlotte and graduated from Charlotte High School. She married William Toland on Feb. 26, 1951. Together they owned and operated Palmer Photography Studio in Ann Arbor. Mrs. Toland was an Eastern Star member and belonged to the Methodist Church. She enjoyed hunting and fishing, and loved the Detroit Red Wings.
She is survived by 10 nieces and nephews, including two nieces formerly of Charlotte, Sue Smith Trimble of Harrison and Helen Smith Snedeker of Dixborough; and nieces Janie Smith Tharp of Charlotte and Trudy Lehman of Bellevue.
She was preceded in death by her husband William in 1982; two sisters and three brothers; one niece, Sally Smith VanderPloeg; and one nephew, Theron Nash.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
