Robert Tomlinson

Robert Allen Tomlinson, 59, of Charlotte died Thursday, Oct. 9, 2003. Mr. Tomlinson was born March 2, 1944, the son of William and Mildred (Dimond) Tomlinson.

He retired from the G.M. Parts Division in 1998 and worked on the Eaton County Handicapped Parking Enforcement task force. He loved taking pictures at family gatherings and loved his grandchildren. He enjoyed surfing the net, gardening, visiting by his wife of 33 years, Florence (Schwab), daughter Stacey Tomlinson (Robert Rautio), sons Robert Allen (Patty) Tomlinson II of Jackson, Rex (Celena) Tomlinson of Charlotte, Paul William Tomlinson of Saginaw, 12 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren, step-mother Edna Tomlinson, mother-in-law Bernice Schwab of Charlotte, sisters Patti Villanueva and Sherry (Mike) Sparks of Vermontville, and brothers Ron (Pat) Tomlinson and Chuck (Brenda) Tomlinson of Charlotte.

He was preceded in death by his father, William Tomlinson, mother Mildred Carter in 1996 and brother Bill Tomlinson.

Funeral service is 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2003 at Pray Funeral Home with Rev. Bret McAtee officiating. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Vermontville, Michigan. Visitation is 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Sunday and Monday, at Pray Funeral Home.

Aubrey J. Tooker

Aubrey Junior “Chuck” Tooker, age 86 of Grand Ledge, passed away peacefully in the presence of his children and other loved ones on Saturday, March 22, 2003 in Lansing, after a short illness. Aubrey came into this life on June 10, 1916 in Delhi Township, Ingham County, the son of Aubrey L. and Ludia (Heinig) Tooker. A.J. was born, raised and helped work the family farm in the Grovenburg neighborhood, until he moved his family to his own farm in Benton Townhip, Eaton County, in 1946. It is here that he fulfilled his dreams of raising his family and living out his life on his own farm. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Lavern, Harris and Earl.

Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Etta (Davis); 2 sons, Roger (Irene) and Randal (Deborah) both of Grand Ledge; daughter, Judy (Jerry) Mascoli of Lansing; 2 step-sons, Walter (Susan) Lyon of Lansing and Jerry (Janice) Lyon of Eaton Rapis; 15 grandchildren and several great and great-great grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Lucille Tooker and Doris Foster; niece, Carol Ottney; nephews, Gerald, Dale, Larry and Ross Tooker.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 26th at 1:00 p.m. from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids. Burial will follow in the Markham Cemetery in Delhi Township. Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 2:00-4:00 and 7:00-9:00 p.m. For those desiring memorial contributions may be made to the Potterville Library in memory of Aubrey J. Tooker.

Earl A. Townsend

Retired Sgt. Major Earl A. “Bud” Townsend passed away May 18, 2003 at his temporary residence in Tucson, Ariz.

Bud was born Jan. 28, 1927 in Palm City, Fla. to Ralph and Verna Hager Townsend. He was raised in Vermontville and graduated from Vermontville High School.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve during his senior year in high school and upon graduation in June 1944 he was called to active duty, serving in Europe during World War II. During his Army career, he was assigned to the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division, the 82nd Airborne Division, the 1st Cavalry Division and the 1st Signal Brigade. He served as station chief for numerous communications centers. Throughout his military career, Bud served in the Signal Corps in many foreign lands, including England, Germany, Korea, Thailand, Vietnam and Ethiopia, and numerous duty stations in the United States. After retirement, he lived in Sierra Vista, Ariz. Bud married Elizabeth “Liz” Goodison on Oct. 4, 1950.

He is survived by his wife, Liz; seven children, Earl “Buddy” Townsend of Clear Lake, Wis., Pamela (Michael) Reilly of Huntsville, Ala., Patricia (James) Van Sickler of Tucson, Timothy (Kim) Townsend of Edgar Springs, Mo., Michael (Carole) Townsend of Melbourne, Fla., Sarah Sherwood of Tampa, Fla., and Susan (Kenneth) Bradshaw of Bisbee, Ariz.; 17 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Eloise Whalen, Margaret Strang and June Nash of Michigan.

Interment took place at Fort Huachuca Cemetery.

Howard J. Troutner Sr.

Howard J. Troutner Sr., age 65, of Eaton Rapids, died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2003 at a Lansing hospital. He was born April 8, 1938 in Bunderhill Township, the son of Calvin and Arvilla (Disbrow) Troutner.

Howard was retired from General Motors – B.O.C. in Lansing, retiring in 1993, and was a member of the U.A.W. Local #1618. A farmer at heart, he raised cattle, horses, pigs, chickens and ducks, and just enjoyed being out with mother nature. Howard was affiliated with the Eaton Rapids Wesleyan Church.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Sue Troutner; brother, Earnest Troutner; half sister and half brothers, Albert, Delbert and Harold Troutner.

Surviving are his wife of 37 years, Sally; two sons, Howard (Raelea) Troutner Jr. of Olivet and Jason (Cathy) Troutner of Eaton Rapids; four grandchildren Carlie Elizabeth Troutner, Taylor Abigail Troutner, Jason Kirt Troutner and Jorden Mary Troutner; three brothers, Leon Troutner, Richard Troutner and Lafe Troutner; five sisters, Iris Hawkins, Monna Sharp, Gladys Moore, Vida Sweezy and LaDonna Howe; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Friday, Nov. 7 from Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids. Burial followed in Perry Cemetery in Brookfield Township.

For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society in memory of Howard J. Troutner Sr.

Stephen R. Turner

Stephen Ray Turner, 58, of Eaton Rapids, died Monday, Nov. 17, 2003 in Lansing.

Mr. Turner was born July 22, 1945 in Battle Creek, the son of Rexford and Leah LaFern (Galbreath) Turner. He worked in skilled trades at Plant 1, B.O.C. for 37 years and for the last four years he did maintenance work through the Jobs Band at the VFW Home in Eaton Rapids. He was known for being able to fix just about anything. He was an avid hot rod fan and a member of the National Hot Rod Association. He was also a member of the Good Guys Rod & Custom Association.

He is survived by his wife, Judith (Bodell) Turner; daughter, April (Turner) Trine; sons Stephen (Tabitha Hester) Turner, Wade (Sherrill) Turner and LeeRoy (Crystal Spaulding) Turner, all of Eaton Rapids; 14 grandchildren; father, Rexford (Olga) Turner; brothers, Rexford Michael (Debbie) Turner and Daniel Joe (Kate) Turner, both of Eaton Rapids; sisters, Julia (James) Leslie and Marty (Bill) Long, both of Dimondale.

Funeral services were held Nov. 20 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Rev. Randy Royston officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home of Charlotte.

Holli Sue Tyler

Holli Sue Tyler, age 26, of Eaton Rapids, died Monday, August 4, 2003 in Pontiac. Holli was born December 13, 1976 in Eaton Rapids and graduated from Eaton Rapids High School in the Class of 1995.

She is survived by her daughter, Kira O’Donnell of Eaton Rapids; mother, Janice (Mark) O’Donnell; father, Rocky (Leigh) Tyler all of Eaton Rapids; 2 brothers, Ryan Tyler, Kiefer Tyler, both of Eaton Rapids; 2 step-brothers, Brendan (Amanda) O’Donnell of VT, Dillon Swan of Eaton Rapids; 1 sister, Heather (Joe) Marsh of Eaton Rapids; grandparents, Dale & Sue Ellsworth of Eaton Rapids, Waneta (Fred) Smith-Laughter of LA; and 1 nephew, Gavin.

Funeral services were held Thursday, August 7, 2003 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Radids. Casket bearers were Ryan Tyler, Kiefer Tyler, Jim Ellsworth, Joe Ellsworth, John Ellsworth and Jeff Ellsworth.

Letty J. Vahs

Letty J. Vahs, age 68, of Olivet, died Saturday, Sept. 6, 2003 at her residence.

Letty was born Sept. 7, 1934 in Elkins, W.Va., the daughter of Millard and Annabelle (Moyer) Browning and had been an Olivet-area resident for 63 years. She was a 1954 graduate of Olivet High School, a member of Olivet Congregational Church and a retired secretary to the principal of Olivet Community Schools, with 34-1/2 years of service. The Letty Vahs Scholarship Fund was named in her honor to help further the education of students in the vocational field.

Surviving are her husband of 47 years, Richard Vahs; son, Bradley (Myrna Wolter) Vahs of Olivet; daughter, Sarah (Tom) Buttrick of Gaylord; grandchildren, Spencer and Page Vahs, Hilary and Stephanie Buttrick; mother, Annabelle Browning of Olivet; six brothers, Scott Browning of Plano, Texas, Ron (Shirley) Browning of Marshall, Charlie (Cecelia) Browning of Olivet, Bob (Jeannie) Browning of Elizabethtown, Ky., Jim (Dianna) Browning of Albion and Tom (Vickie) Browing of Olivet; and father-in-law, Ralph Vahs of Charlotte.

She was preceded in death by her son, Mark John Vahs; father, Millard Browning; mother-in-law, Sarah “Betty” Vahs; and sister-in-law, Mary Ann Segar.

Funeral services were held Sept. 10 at Olivet Congregational Church, with Rev. Roy Backus officiating. Interment was at Olivet Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Eaton Community Hospice House or Olivet Congregational Church. Arragements were by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home of Charlotte.

Clarissa VanDaele

Clarissa VanDaele died Aug. 17, 2003.

She was born March 30, 1913 in Hastings and was living at Mercy Pavilion Nursing Home, Battle Creek, and previously lived at Cherry Hill Manor senior living home.

She retired from United Steel and Wire in 1975, and volunteered at American Red Cross in Battle Creek. She loved gardening and reading.

She was preceded in death by her second husband, Albert VanDaele, who died in 1979; her first husband, Speed Wells; and son, Gary Wells.

Survivors are Jill (Bill) Webb, six grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial service was held Aug. 22 at Bellevue Cemetery. Arrangements were by Henri’s Funeral Home of Battle Creek.

Lynn A. VanderMoere Sr.

Lynn Alan VanderMoere Sr., 64, of Mason, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003 following a long battle with cancer.

Mr. VanderMoere was born Aug. 22, 1938 in Lansing, the son of Bill and Nicky VanderMoere. He retired from the Lansing Fire Department as a captain after 25 years of service. He was a member of the Mason/Holt Fraternal Order of Eagles and Michigan Artistic Blacksmithing Association. Mr. VanderMoere was a veteran of the United States Marine Corp. He enjoyed blacksmithing, oil painting and woodworking, and will be remembered for his sense of humor.

He was preceded in death by his son, Lynn VanderMoere Jr., and his parents.

He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Mary Lee; two sons, Scott (Evita) VanderMoere and Rich (Heather) VanderMoere; two sisters, Beverly (George) Gase and Patty Jo (Don) Haueter; eight grandchildren, Jeremiah, Matthew, Amber, Nate, Jennah, Nick, Seth and Chelsea; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Feb. 7 at Palmer-Bush Lansing Chapel, with Rev. Jack Shell officiating. Interment was at Mt. Hope Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the National Fire Safety Council, Fire Station #1, 120 E. Shiawassee, Lansing, MI 48933.
