Roy E. Davis

Roy Edwin Davis, 72, of Charlotte, died Friday, Aug. 23, 2002.

Mr. Davis was born Oct. 18, 1929 in Bellevue, the son of George and Minnie (Modlin) Davis. He was a life-time member of UAW Local 602 and worked as an inspector for General Motors for 31 years before retiring in 1978. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict, and was married to Reiko (Okano) on Dec. 2, 1954 in Tokyo.

He is survived by his wife, Reiko of Charlotte; sons, Michael (Joyce) and Mitchell (Carol), both of Charlotte; daughter, Michella (Mike) Wheat of Houston, Texas; five grandchildren, Shawn, Scott, Dyanne, Marilyn and Rayce; and a great-granddaughter, Alaina.

Family Affirmation Services were held Aug. 27 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with R. Raymond Rossell officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Capital Area Humane Society.

Lester W. Day

Lester W. Day, 88, of Olivet, died Monday, May 6, 2002 at Tendercare of Marshall.

Mr. Day was born Nov. 26, 1913 in Walton Township, Eaton County, the son of Lewis and Lela (Rolfe) Day and was a life-long farmer and had also worked at Masterbilt Products Co. in Olivet for four years.

He is survived by one daughter, Margaret (Thomas) Shafe of Olivet; two sons, Buddy (Sandra) and Roger (Sheila), both of Olivet; nine grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren; one brother, L.J. Day of Mason; and four sisters, Mary Murray of Marshall, Genevieve Crozier and Alice Williams, both of Charlotte, and Edith Tuttle of Howard City.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene (Talmage) Day in 1984; granddaughter, Sandra Starr; four brothers, Delmar, Ralph, Merlyn and Harold; and a sister, Ellen Shapley.

Funeral services were held May 11 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel in Charlotte, with Rev. Dave Burnett officiating. Interment was at Bosworth Cemetery in Olivet.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or American Lung Association.

Doris A. Dean

Doris Ann Dean, 61, of Charlotte, died Sunday, April 14, 2002.

Miss Dean was born Jan. 13, 1941 in Charlotte, the daughter of Nyle and Lucille (Youngs) Dean.

She is survived by a sister, Shirley (Vernon) Curtis of Nashville; stepmother, Janet Dean of Charlotte; stepsister, Nancy (Dan) Engel of Charlotte; and five nephews and three nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Graveside services were held April 17 at Millerburg Cemetery in Charlotte, with Rev. Rich Mitterling officiating.

Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home of Charlotte.

Laura DeBolt

Laura DeBolt, 68, of DeWitt, formerly of Vermontville, died Thursday, Dec. 5, 2002.

Miss DeBolt was born Dec. 31, 1933 in Kalamo Township, the daughter of Clarence and Esther (Kellogg) DeBolt. She worked at Transitions North for the past eight years.

She is survived by brother, Louis (Judy) DeBolt of Vermontville; sister, Eleanor (Gary) Kinnie of Dover, Tenn.; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and caregivers at the DeWitt Home. She was preceded in death by brother Wesley in 2001. Funeral services were held Dec. 7 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Pastor Wes Emerson officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family.

Leona D. Decker

Leona Delores Decker, 77, of Vermontville, died Saturday, Nov. 16 at Hayes Green Beach Hospital in Charlotte.

Mrs. Decker was born Sept. 15, 1925 in Bellaire, Ohio, the daughter of Jacob and Ruie (Bell) Powers. She was raised in the New Cumberland, W.Va., area and attended schools there. Mrs. Decker moved to the Charlotte area in 1970 from Ohio, lived in Nashville for a few years, and for the past 20 years at her home in Vermontville. She was a member of the Nashville VFW Auxiliary.

She is survived by daughters, Barb (Fred) Patrone of Bellaire, Ohio, Betty Sparr of Martinsburg, W.Va., Kathy Russell of Vermontville, Ginny (Butch) Vessels of Shadyside, Ohio, Millie (Nicholas) Wells of Charlotte, Lorraine (Craig) Carter of Grand Rapids, Rose McMeen of Vermontville and Ruth Decker of Union City; sons, Albert (Gayla) Kienutske of Nashville, Lonny Kienutske of Jackson and LaVerne (Sherry) Decker of Battle Creek; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Ray Powers of Weirton, W.Va. Preceding her in death were her parents, four husbands, two daughters, six brothers and two sisters.

Respecting her wishes, private family prayers were conducted in the funeral home chapel. Interment was at Lakeview Cemetery in Nashville. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, American Diabetes Association or American Heart Association. Arrangements were by Maple Valley Chapel.

Arnold J. DeGroot

Arnold J. DeGroot, 94, of Olivet, died Friday, Feb. 15, 2002 at his residence.

Mr. DeGroot was born May 27, 1907 in Zeeland, the son of Arie and Nellie (Edding) DeGroot and had been an Olivet-area resident since 1929. Mr. DeGroot was a life-long farmer and member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Charlotte. He was married to Gladys Mary Welch on April 21, 1927.

He is survived by his wife of 74 years, Gladys DeGroot; son, Merle (Janet) DeGroot of Olivet; two daughters, Joy (Joe) Mazurek of Maple Rapids and June (Don) France of Battle Creek; 12 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great-grandchildren; brother, Nelson (Dessie) DeGroot of Bellevue; and sister, Lillian Harmon of Mancelona.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Elmer, Earl, John, little Earl and LaVerne DeGroot; sister, Caroline Frisby; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Feb. 18 at Calvary Baptist Church, Charlotte, with Pastor Mark Booth officiating. Interment was at Bosworth Cemetery in Olivet.

Memorial contributions may be made to Calvary Baptist Church in Charlotte. Arrangements were by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte.

Williard Desgrange

Williard Desgrange, age 86 of Eaton Rapids, died Sunday, May 12, 2002 at the St. Lawrence / Dimondale Center. He was born March 3, 1916 in Pleasant Bend, Ohio, one of eleven children born to John Wesley and Ruth (Rowlader) Desgrange. Mr. Desgrange was a life long farmer, who began farming in Lake Odessa at the age of 12, and moved to the Eaton Rapids area to work the Webster Farm. Williard was preceded in death by his wife of 23 years, Elizabeth (Hilliard) Shepardson Desgrange; son, William Shepardson; daughter, Cathy Haley; great-grandson, John James; sister, Laura Haney and brother, Lavon Desgrange.

Surviving are 2 daughters, Sandra (Chris) Lund of Eaton Rapids and Carol (David) Brown of Springport; 8 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren; 5 brothers, Paul (Orpha) Desgrange of Lake Odessa, Clarence (Nancy) Desgrange of Lake Odessa, Elwood (Betty) Desgrange of Eaton Rapids, Aubrey “Bill” (Barbara) Desgrange of Lake Odessa and Glenn (Judi) Desgrange of Lake Odessa; 3 sisters, Aloma (Roger) Allen of Lake Odessa, Opal (John) Booher of Freeport and Arloa Lee of Williamston; sister-in-law, Dorothy Desgrange of Eaton Rapids; and many many nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be Wednesday, May 15, 2002 at 1 p.m. at the Brickyard Cemetery in rural Eaton Rapids with Minister Aaron Howard from the Church of Christ of Mason, officiating. Family will receive friends at the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids on Tuesday evening from 6-9 p.m. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the Sparrow Home Hospice at 1210 W. Saginaw, Lansing, MI 48915-1999, in memory of Williard Desgrange.

Marian Dilger

Marian Ruby Dilger, 86, of Charlotte, died Dec. 10, 2002.

Mrs. Dilger was born Jan. 26, 1916 in Benton Township, the daughter of John and Ruth (Hale) McDaniel.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews, and dear friend Joyce Webber.

She was preceded in death by her husband Peter in 1974.

Funeral services were held Dec. 16 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with R. Raymond Rossell officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte.
