Harry R. Bottomley
Harry R. Bottomley, 94, of Portage, formerly of Charlotte, died Tuesday evening, July 9, 2002 at Borgess Medical Center Kalamazoo.
Mr. Bottomley was born June 30, 1908 in Gridley, Calif., the son of Fred and Myrta (Nordstrom) Bottomley, and was raised in Charlotte. Before his retirement at the age of 82, he managed the Neisner Department Stores for 17 years; was a sale representative for Duro Decal; managed the 5 & 10 Woodworth Store in Plymouth; purchased tank parts during World War II; invented and patented the extended auto brake pedal and was owner/ operator of Bottomley School Equipment Company. Mr. Bottomley was a Boy Scout and a member of the Masonic Lodge and Detroit Westside Lions Club. He maintained the family home of 60 years in Dearborn before moving to Portage in October 2002. Mr. Bottomley enjoyed family, friends, travel, yard work, fishing, hunting and any good Challenge. On Feb. 2, 1929 he was united in marriage to his wife of 73 years, the former Mildred English, who survives.
Also surviving are two sons and one daughter, Robert (Edna) Bottomley of Macedonia, Ohio, Roger (Robin) Bottomley of Aurora, Colo., and Donella (Denis) Laskowsky of Portage; nine grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren; tow brothers, Wayne Bottomley and Gale (Beverly) Bottomley, both of Barryton; and several nieces and nephew.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Alfred, Forrest and Laurence Bottomley.
A service celebrating Mr. Bottomley’s life was held at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte.

William J. Brady
William John Brady, 54, of Battle Creek, died Thursday, march 14, 2002 at Battle Creek Health System as the result of complications from an auto accident on Dec. 31, 2002.
Mr. Brady was born May 18, 1947 in Battle Creek, the son of Neil Hulbert and Agnes Louise (Sietler) Brandy. He graduated from Bellevue High School and farmed and hauled livestock until going to work at Tenneco Automotive in Marshall a few years ago. He married Shirley Wernowsky in April 1980, which ended in divorce in Sept. 2001; she survives. Mr. Brady enjoyed going to farm auctions and driving the country roads around Shipshewana, Indiana. He collected hats and toy antique tractors.
He is survived by son, Dallas; brothers Robert of Battle Creek and Joseph of Bellevue; sister, Janiece Wallace of Arizona; aunt, Olive Lewis of Battle Creek; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sons, Travis Jeffrey and Dustin James; nephew Steven Wallace; and great-nephew, David Wallace.
Funeral services were held March 18 at Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue, with Pastor Wendell Stine officiating. Interment was at Bell Cemetery in Assyria Township. Memorial contributions may be made to the children’s educational fund.
Rev. LeahBelle Braley
The Lord our precious mother Rev. LeahBelle Braley served all her life, took her to be with Him on Monday, September 30, 2002, at the age of 91, following a brief illness. LeahBelle was born in Gratiot County, Michigan on December 17, 1910, to loving and caring parents, Albert and Alta (Shaw) Moon. She was the third in a family of seven children; Lenora, died at 16 months old; Lillian (Marvin Peters) the oldest died in 1999; William Albert (Lucille) both deceased; Robert (Dorothy) reside at Isabella Lake; Basil deceased (Elaine Butler) resides in Grand Ledge; Ruby Moon is in Eaton Rapids; Maynard lives in rural St. Johns, wife Shirley deceased. LeahBelle married Hollis Parks in 1935 and to them were born three lovely daughters, Luella, married Donald Walters and lives in Curtiss, Wisconsin; Joyce Crosby, married Jerry Draper and lives in Navarre, Florida; Eleanor Pounds also lives in Navarre, Florida. LeahBelle married Gerald Braley in 1965 and he died in 1972. She had been blessed with 8 adorable grandchildren, 19 loveable great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and friends. Her church family at the Church of the Nazarene in Eaton Rapids, has been very loyal, supportive and caring for these many years. LeahBelle appreciated the many years the Lord had given her to serve Him. She was a retired nursing home administrator and owner, certified social worker, Sunday School teacher for many years and was a licensed practical nurse and ordained minister in the Church of the Nazarene.
Interment of the body was on Wednesday, October 2, 2002 at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Eaton Rapids. A memorial service in celebration of her life was held October 5th at the Eaton Rapids Church of the Nazarene with Rev. Dallas McFarland officiating, also assisting him were Rev. Harold Yochum, Rev. Wm. E. Naill and Rev. Gary Bright. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the Eaton Rapids Church of the Nazarene 2225 S. Michigan Road, Eaton Rapids, MI 48827, Heartland Hospice or a charity of one’s choice, in memory of Rev. LeahBelle Braley. Funeral arrangements were through the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids.
Ardyce Briggs
Ardyce Briggs, 68, of Ionia, died Tuesday, April 23, 2002.
Mrs. Briggs was July 25, 1933 in Eaton County, the daughter of Shirley and Hermina (Zemke) Southern. She loved to sew for her family and friends, and loved playing bridge.
She is survived by her husband, James; sons, Rodney (Ronda), Bradley (Gailene), Dennis (Vicki) and Scott Briggs, all of Ionia; daughters, Teressa Briggs and Chris (Kim) Rowley of Ionia, and Karen (Rich) Taylor of Byron Center; 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; sisters, Mary jean Hadden of Wayland and Barbara Ann (Charles) Wilson of Williamston; aunt Elizabeth Stowe of Ionia; and brother-in-law, Nyle (Judy) Briggs of Battle Creek.
Funeral services were held April 26 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte.
Memorial contributions may be made to the family of future designation.
Gale Briggs
Gale Lee Briggs, Jr., 59, of Charlotte died Wednesday, July 3, 2002 in Lansing. Mr. Briggs was born Oct. 29, 1942 in Charlotte, the son of Gale and Gladys (Martin) Briggs.
He was the owner and operator of Gale Briggs, Inc., the business his father began in 1930.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Betty (Swift) Briggs, daughters Julie Buckner of Charlotte, Laurie (Bruce) Dudley of Wacousta, Jenni Briggs of Ames, Iowa; sons, Steven (Lisa) and Robert, both of Charlotte, grandchildren Sasha (Frank) Kasey, Tyler, Adam, Cole, Chase and Noah, and sister Mary Alice (Glen) Tibbett of Charlotte.
Funeral services were Saturday, July 6 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Rev. Patricia Stirling officiating. Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.
If desired, contributions may be made to the Heart Association of the Arthritis Foundation.
Lawrence J. “Mike” Briggs
Lawrence J. “Mike” Briggs, age 69 of Eaton Rapids, died Saturday, March 30, 2002 at Sparrow Hospital. He was born September 7, 1932 in Lansing, the son of Charles and Ila (Blough) Briggs. Mike served in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict and served 20 years with the Department of Military Affairs at the Albion Armory for the State Of Michigan. Preceding him in death were his parents; 2 brothers, Charles Jr. and Robert Sr.; sister, Margaret Allen; 3 grandchildren, Jere Lyn Briggs II, Nichole Marie and Gerald Wallace Holbrook II.
Surviving are his wife of 36 years, Elizabeth; 4 children, Jere (Sandy) Briggs of Round Lake, IL, Mikal (Stacy) Briggs of Eaton Rapids, Dawnna Briggs of Eaton Rapids and Suzanne (Gerald) Holbrook of Camden, TN; sister Carol Schalow of Lansing; brother, Melvin (Joan) Briggs of Ionia; many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 4th at 1:00 p.m. from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids. Visitation will be Tuesday and Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Elmer G. Britten
Elmer G. Britten, 83, of Howell, died Dec. 8, 2002 at the Hospice house of Mid-Michigan in Lansing.
Mr. Britten was born Feb. 17, 1919 in Eaton Township, the son of Mabel (Chapman) and Arbie Britten. He married Virginia Bradley; she preceded him in death Nov. 13, 1985. Mr. Britten was a member of First Baptist Church of Howell and American Legion Devereaux Post #141. He was a World War II Army veteran.
He is survived by brothers, Floyd of Bellevue, Harold and Joseph, both of Lansing, Edward of Dimondale and Fred of Eaton Rapids; and seven nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two sisters.
Funeral services were held Dec. 11 at MacDonald’s Funeral Home in Howell, with Dr, Gary Bruland and Rev. Donald E. Williams of First Baptist Church officiating. Interment was at Fairview Cemetery in Brighton.
Memorial contributions mat be made to First Baptist Church or American legion Deveraux Post #141.
Carl Brooks
Carl A. Brooks, 81, of Potterville died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002. Mr. Brooks was born in 1921 in Grand Rapids. He is the son of Roy and Eva (Kridler) Brooks. He had lived in Potterville for over 60 years. He was a retired employee of the Fisher Body Division of General Motors in Lansing, where he worked for over 31 years. He enjoyed woodworking and crafts.
He has surviving; tow daughters, Kay (Ed) Paige of Lansing and DeeDee (Bob) Hackworth of Charlotte; five grandchildren, Tracy Hicks, Kyle (Merrilyn) Hicks, Robert (Lynn) Hicks, Chad Hicks and Lisa Paige; great grandchildren, Tara Daily (Hicks), Saydie Hicks, Karlie Hicks, Kylie Hicks, Chase Hicks, Brent Hicks and Dyland McKay; sister, Maxine (Robert) Fhaner of Houghton Lake; Sister in–law, Joann Hickox of Lansing; dear friend, Marion Leiter of Charlotte and several nieces and nephews. He was proceeded in death by his parents, wife, Maybelle (Hickox) Brooks, Sister, Irma Kerr and Grandson, Doug Paige.
Funeral services were held Dec. 27 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Tom Haynie officiating. Interment was held in the Potterville Cemetery.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Lung Association or the Ingham Health Care Hospice.
