Rev. Bill Brown

Rev. William E. Brown, 82, of Bellevue, died Jan. 21, 2002 at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo.

Rev. Brown was born April 28, 1919 to William and Sadie (Tull) Brown in Fibre – in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. He graduated from Albion College in 1945, received a master of divinity degree at Northwestern University, Garrett Biblical Institute in Chicago, and a doctor of philosophy at The International Free Protestant Episcopal University in London, England. Rev. Brown served as a minister to Methodist churches in Kalamazoo, Montague, Bangor and Bellevue, the Methodist – Congregational Church in Ovid, and the West Carmel Congregational Church in Charlotte. He also served as a professor of sociology and anthropology at Olivet College for 18 years. Rev. Brown married Jean Richter Sept. 7, 1942 in Lansing; she survives. His memberships in community organizations included the Montague – Whitehall F & AM Lodge 198, Saladin Temple A.A.O.N.M.S. of Grand Rapids, Battle Creek Shrine Club, Bellevue Conservation Club, Bellevue Historical Society, Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity, and was twice president of the Montague Rotary Club. Rev. Brown and his wife spent summers at their cabin on Trout Lake and winters in Florida. He enjoyed traveling, outdoor sports, reading and spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Jean; children, Teresa Alexander of Bellevue United Methodist Church. Interment was at Riverside Cemetery, Bellevue. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association. Arrangements were by Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue.

Carol S. Brown

Carol S. Brown, age 60 of Eaton Rapids, died Sunday, March 17, 2002 at the Hospice House of Lansing, following a long illness. She was born December 5, 1941 in Owosso, Michigan, the daughter of Verbel and Mildred (Vertro) Handcock. Mrs. Brown was a member of the West Columbia Church of the Nazarene in Mason.

Surviving are her husband, Charles W. Brown, Sr.; 6 children, Timothy (Debbie) Brown of Lansing, Jerry (Marlena) Brown of Kentucky, Charlie W. Brown, Jr. of Eaton Rapids, Nena (Jim) Nelson of Eaton Rapids, Wanetta (Michael) Lamoureux of Eaton Rapids, and Sue (Butch) Matthews of Eaton Rapids; 18 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren; sister, Leta Bosom of Bar Harbor, Maine.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 20, 2002 at 1 p.m. from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with Pastor Jerry Garcia of the West Columbia Church of the Nazarene, officiating. Cremation will follow this service with a private burial of cremains in the Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Lansing. Visitation will be Wednesday from 11 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.

Stanley A. Brown

Stanley Allen Brown, 48, of Bellevue, died Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002.

Mr. Brown was born Oct. 2, 1954 in Charlotte, the son of Robert and Patricia (David) Brown. He was a medical health technician and was in the U.S. Army.

He is survived by daughters, Jessica Bess of Vicksburg and Laura Brown of Battle Creek; son, Benjamin Brown of Toledo; father, Robert (stepmother Susan Myers) Brown of Charlotte; mother, Patricia Brown of Charlotte; grandchildren, Breanne, Bridgett, Brooke, Dezeray, Devon, Trinity and Makenzie; twin brother Steve Brown and brother Donald (Becky) Brown, both of Charlotte; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held Dec. 13 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with R. Raymond Rossell facilitating.

Memorial contributions may be made to Charlotte Helping Hands.

H. Dean Bruce

H. Dean Bruce, 67, of Charlotte, died Sunday, Aug. 4, 2002 at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing after a short illness.

Mr. Bruce was born June 18, 1935 in Charlotte, the son of Thomas and Minnie (Garland) Bruce and was a life-long Charlotte resident. He was a 1954 graduate of Charlotte High School, served in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1960 and was a truck driver for Leaseway Motorcar Co., from where he retired in June 2000. Mr. Bruce was a retired member of the Charlotte Volunteer Fire Department, with 42 years of service; and a member of Charlotte Eagles Aerie #3552 and Maple City Post 2406 VFW in Charlotte.

He is survived by his wife, Janette (Hicks) Bruce to whom he was married Aug. 19, 1960; one son David of Yuma, Ariz.; one daughter, Jodie Roux of Charlotte; three grandchildren, Nichole (Kenneth) Babcock, Daniel Pion and Ryan Patton; one great-grandchild, Ashley Elizabeth Babcock; one sister, Shirley Swan of Eaton Rapids; two brothers, Wallace (Myra) and Garry (Barbara), both of Charlotte; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Betty Schmidt and Elaine Packard; and three brothers, Robert, Kenneth and Thomas Bruce.

Funeral services were held Aug. 7 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel in Charlotte, with Rev. Patricia Stirling and the Charlotte Fire Department officiating. Cremation followed the services.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Charlotte Volunteer Fire Department or Eaton Community Hospice.

Dorothy A. Brugh

Dorothy A. (Schulert) Brugh, 92, of Grand Ledge, formerly of Charlotte, died Friday, July 12, 2002 at the Sparrow Health System Dimondale Center after a short illness.

Mrs. Brugh was born March 27, 1910 in Detroit, the daughter Oscar and Ruth (Sanford) Schulert. She was a 1928 graduate of Belleville High School, attended Moody Bible Institute in Chicago and received a registered nurse degree in Detroit. Mrs. Brugh served as a missionary nurse from 1939 to 1979 for the Latin American Mission in Costa Rica and Columbia. She was married to Lawrence Brugh in 1983; he preceded her in death in 1986.

She is survived by two sisters, Louise Donaldson of Evansville, Ind. And Kathryn Jarboe of Bowling Green, Ky.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; and five brothers, George, Walter, David, Arthur and Sandy Schulert.

At Mrs. Burgh’s request, cremation has taken place. Memorial services were held July 15 at the First Baptist Church in Charlotte, with Rev. Dr. Charles Moore officiating. Interment of cremains was at Perry Cemetery in Brookfield Township.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund or the Latin American Mission. Arrangements were by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home.

Dan B. Bryan

Dan Bruce Bryan, 54, of Charlotte, died Thursday, July 18, 2002 at his residence.

Mr. Bryan was born Dec. 30, 1947 in Charlotte, the son of Ned and Shirley (Casler) Bryan and had lived most of his life in Charlotte, except 20 years when he lived in Soldotna, Alaska. He was a 1966 graduate of Charlotte High School, a US Army veteran serving during the Vietnam era, an electrician with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, and a member of Charlotte Eagles Aerie #3352. Mr. Bryan enjoyed spending time with his son and five grandsons target shooting and duck hunting.

He is survived by his son, Dan (Charie) of Vermontville; five grandsons, Dan III, Ashtin, Blaze, Brandon and Brent Bryan; two brothers, William (Judy) of Charlotte and Art of Potterville; and his mother, Shirley Casler Bryan of Lake City.

He was preceded in death by his father, Ned Bryan.

Private family graveside services were held at Meadowbrook Cemetery in Mulliken. Arrangements were by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte.

Jerry W. Bryant

Jerry Wayne Bryant, 50, of Olivet, died Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002 at his residence from natural causes.

Mr. Bryant was born April 4, 1952 in Pike County, Ky., the son of Homer and Emma Jean (Mullins) Bryant and lived most of his life in the Olivet area. He had been employed as a lawn care worker and was a graduate of the Olivet Adult Education Program.

He is survived by his wife, Judith (Williams) Bryant; nine children, Rhonda Michael and Jennifer Evert, both of Charlotte, and Lisa Gibson, David Evert, Laura (Mike) Rose, Tracy (Eric) Fuller, Nicole Bryant, Danielle Bryant and Chris Bryant, all of Olivet; 14 grandchildren; sister, Betty Payne of Olivet; brother, Ronnie Bryant of Potterville; and four step-brothers, Martin, Chuck, Rick and Bill French.

Funeral services were held Oct. 28 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Pastor Scott Collier of Faith Assembly of God officiating. Interment was at Lee Center Cemetery in Olivet.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family.

Homer Buck, Jr.

Homer A. Buck, Jr., 71, of Grand Ledge, Michigan, died Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002. Mr. Buck was born to his parents, Homer, Sr. and Olive Buck.

Homer was employed at Green Bay Foods in Eaton Rapids for 30 years until his retirement in 1992. He enjoyed being an active member of the Potterville Benton Twp. Fire Department for 30 years.

He is survived by his wife Sandra Buck; sons, Donald (Leanne) Buck of Potterville, Thomas Buck of Potterville and Floyd (Shawn) Buck of Manton; daughters, Rhonda Buck of Lake Odessa, Debra Buck of Lansing, and Sharon Buck of Grand Ledge; eight grandchildren; two brothers, Robert Buck of Newaygo, and John (Shirley) Buck of Lansing.

He was preceded in death by his mother in 1979, hid father in 1982 and son Randy Scott Buck in 1994.

The family will receive visitors from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte. Memorial services will be held at 2p.m. Monday at the Potterville- Benton Twp. Fire Station with Rev. Tom Peters officiating.
