Bertie F. Burt
Bertie F. Burt, 78, of Charlotte, died June 27, 2002.
Mrs. Burt was born Feb. 4, 1924 in Luray, Va., the daughter of George and Bertie (Nicholas) Corbin. She was a member of the South Cochran Church of God in Charlotte.
She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Glen Burt; sons, Allen, Jim, and Fred (Cyndy), all of Charlotte, Gary (Julie) Mulliken, and Doug of Battle Creek; daughters, Judy (Don) Thornhill of Franklin, Ga., Lois Kettner and Sandy (Dean) Parish, both of Charlotte, Marlene (Mike) Davids of Acworth, Ga., and Margaret (Ed) Johnson of Grand Ledge; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by sons, Larry and Jerry, and a grandson, Garry Jr.
Funeral services were held July 1 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Rev. Rich Mitterling officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Julia C. Buxton
Julia C. Buxton, 87, of Charlotte, died May 17, 2002.
Mrs. Buxton was born Feb. 10, 1915 in Vermontville, the daughter of Daniel and Etta (Van Vleet) Smith. She had been a care-giver her entire life and had over 60 foster children she helped along the way. She attended Chester Gospel Church.
She is survived by her husband, Lyle Buxton of Charlotte; daughters, Dianna Dye of Charlotte and Dixie Berg of Florida; sons, David Berg of California and Sharon Bos of Virginia; three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; and sister, Bessie Glossop of Grand Legde.
Funeral services were held May 20 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Pastor Marc Livingston officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte.
Sandra J. Cain
Sandra Jean Cain, 60, of Davenport, Fla., formerly of Eaton Rapids, died Wednesday, July 31, 2002.
Mrs. Cain was born Dec. 30, 1941 in Charlotte, the daughter of Ion and Anna Baker.
She is survived by sister, Gloria Smith of Hastings; sons, David Cain of Eaton Rapids and Doug Cain of Davenport, Fla.; daughter, Tammy Piper of Spring Lake.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Cliff.
Memorial services were held Aug. 7 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Duane Royston officiating.
Glenn A. “Windy” Canfield
Glenn Allen “Windy” Canfield, age 78 of Eaton Rapids, died Friday, September 6, 2002 at the Eaton Rapids Medical Center. He was born September 5, 1924 in Eaton Rapids, the son of Allen and Alma (Wells) Canfield. Windy was a retired employee of the Eaton Rapids Public Schools and had formerly worked for the Harris Oil Company in Eaton Rapids.
Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Jean (Caldwell); 2 sons, Gregg (Lavina) Canfield of Marshall and Steven (LeeAnn) Canfield of Eaton Rapids; 3 grandchildren, Matthew Allen Canfield, Curtis Lownsbery and Deana Lownsbery; sister-in-law, Janet White and nephew Carl White; several cousins.
In keeping with his request, there will be no visitation or services. For those desiring memorial gifts may be made to the Eaton Rapids Medical Center at 1500 S. Main St., Eaton Rapids, MI 48827, in memory of Glenn A. “Windy” Canfield. Arrangements were made through the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids.
Bradley K. Carpenter
Bradley “Brad” Kent Carpenter, 45, of Charlotte, died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002.
Mr. Carpenter was born Feb. 22, 1956 in Charlotte, the son of Bruce and Janet (Devenbaugh) Carpenter. He was a carpenter.
He is survived by his parents; daughters, Samantha, Tina and Karen; grandparents, Theda and Maurice Devenbaugh; brothers, Steve and Darryl Carpenter; and many other family members.
Funeral services were held Jan. 19 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Rev. Glenn Neal officiating. Interment was at Gresham Cemetery, Charlotte.
Memorial donations may be made to the family. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home, Inc., Charlotte.
Daniel Carpenter
Daniel J. Carpenter, 71, of De Bary, Fla., formerly of Charlotte, died June 23 after a lengthy illness. He was born in New York on Nov. 24, 1930, the son of the late Constance Williams and Daniel J. Carpenter, Sr.
Daniel served in the fire service for over 40 years, starting this lifelong career in the U.S. Navy and retiring from the U.S. Air Force on July 1, 1968. He received the Air Force Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service, Fifth Air Force, June 8, 1967 to May 17, 1968. He was the former Fire Administrator and Chief Fire Marshall of Mecklenburg County, N.C., serving in this position from 1968-85. He received his associate degree in fire science technology from Central Piedmont Community College and his BS in law enforcement and administration from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He was a life member of the International Association of Fire Chiefs and served on the Arson Committee and Arson Task Force from 1971-84. He was the international director for the Southeastern Association of Fire Chiefs from 1978-85, past President in 1977-78 as well as other positions. Other affiliations included the International Association of Arson Investigators Board of Directors, North Carolina Chapter of International Society of Fire Service Instructors; North Carolina Firefighters Association, North Carolina Fire Marshals Association of Fire Chiefs as a consultant for a project supported by the National Institute of Justice, U.S. Dept. of Justice. He conducted fire and arson management studies with TRIDATA Corporation under contracted from the U.S. Fire Administration.
He was a member of the Excelsior Ledge #261 AF &AM Scottish Rite Bodies and Oasis Temple of the Shrine. Dan lived in Charlotte, MI until moving to De Bary, Fla. with his wife in November 1996.
Survivors include his spouse of 21 years, Anita “Jerry” Carpenter; daughters Constance Butler and Debra Carpenter; son, Daniel J. Carpenter, Ill; granddaughters Tiffany Hagler and Heather Carpenter; sister Diane Schaumburg, all of Charlotte, N.C.; stepdaughter, Ms. Debra Smedley of Lansing, stepsons Richard England of Elsie, and Michael Swan of Eaton Rapids, step-granddaughters Rachel McCune and Stacee Swan; step-grandsons R. Jerry England, Joshua England, Richard England, and Dillon Swan; sister-in-laws Mrs. Basil “Judy” Walker and Patricia Conard, both of Eaton Rapids, and brother-in-law James Manning of Oklahoma; three great-granddaughters and two great-grandsons, and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held June 27 at the McEwen Funeral Service, Charlotte Chapel. Burial followed at Sharon Memorial Park. Contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.
Constance F. Carroll
Constance Floy Carroll, 55, passed away July 17, 2002 at her home near Eaton Rapids.
Constance was born Aug. 9, 1946 In Lansing, the child of Wayne Spencer and Lois Irene (Bronson) Carroll. She was employed by the state of Michigan, Bureau of Workers and Unemployment Compensation for 36 years, serving numerous years as the State Division administrator. She loved and appreciated her association with fellow co-workers, who brought much joy into her life. As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for 32 years, her testimony and life’s work was to exemplify the Savoir by serving others and continuing His work. As a member of the church, she was called as a full-time missionary of the gospel of Jesus Christ in Argentina, South America, from May 1973 to Nov. 1974. She served numerous callings, one of her favorites was working with the youth. Her life was one of dedicated service to the Lord through service to her family and friends.
She is survived by her mother, Lois Carroll of Grand Ledge; one brother, Spencer (Elizabeth) Carroll of Grand Ledge; two sisters, Penny (Richard) Johnson of Olivet, and twin sister, Christina (William E.) Rogers Jr. of Lansing; two step-sisters, Carol (Bob) Kennedy of Eaton rapids and Nancy (Dean) Fox of Wheatfield, Ind.; two step-brothers, Fritz (Karen) Domres of Charlotte and Herbert (Joanne) Domres of Traverse City; four nieces, Deidre (Tony) Session, Stacy Carroll, Starla (Aaron) Manchester and Stephanie (Chad) Mikesell; three step-nieces, Tina, Stefani and Sheryl; six step-nephews, Troy Zachary, Derin, Andy, and Emmie; three grandnephews, Teiko, Max and Caleb; step-grandnieces and nephews; two aunts, Lorraine Bronson and Lucille Carroll; and numerous cousins.
She was preceded in death by her father, Wayne Carroll.
Services were held July 19 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Holt, with President David Judd officiating. Interment was at Danby Cemetery. Pallbearers were Loyd Austin, Steve and Jacob Doty, Eugene Eschtruth, Les Grable and Tim Strickland.

Grace E. Castleberry
Grace Ellen Castleberry, 64, of Charlotte, died Saturday, March 16, 2002.
Mrs. Castleberry was born Jan. 10, 1938 in Portland, the daughter of Ed and Neta (Alldaffer) Hillis. She helped take care of the elderly and individuals at Butternut Apartments.
She is survived by husband, Calvin Castleberry of Charlotte; daughter, Cathy (George) Godwin of Fishkill, N.Y.; sons, Earl Wood Jr. of Lansing, Steven Wood of Charlotte, Michael Wood of Columbus, Ohio, and Patrick Wood of Grand Rapids; 12 grandchildren; sisters, Catherine (Alfred) Jardot of Charlotte and Jeane McCabe of Florida.
Funeral services were held March 19 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Rev. Rich Mitterling officiating. Interment was at Center Eaton Cemetery in Charlotte.
