Alani B. Cates
Alani Brendolyn Cates, newborn, daughter of Jason and Jill (Fedewa) Cates of Charlotte, died Saturday, June 15, 2002.
Alani was born June 10, 2002 in Charlotte.
She is survived by her parents; brother, Alexander; sisters, Alicia and Allie; grandparents, Ken and Donna Fedewa, and Dennis and Judith Cates, all of Charlotte; great-grandparents, Monte and Margaret Milliron of Livonia, Josephine Cates of Charlotte; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
A Mass of the Angels was celebrated June 18 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Charlotte, with Rev. Fr. Denis Spitzley officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte.
Arrangement were by Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte.
Charlotte Mae Charles
Charlotte Mae Charles, age 85 of Eaton Rapids, died Wednesday, July 31, 2002 at the Sparrow/Dimondale Center. She was born March 16, 1917 in Kokomo, Indiana, the daughter of Charles and Lucy E. (Shay) Lancaster. Charlotte worked as a Nurses Aid in the early 60’s for the Eaton Rapids Community Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dude; and sister, Alberta Aeme.
Surviving are her daughter, Patricia (Thomas) Swan of Duck Lake; 2 grandchildren, Charles Foults of Eaton Rapids and Cheryl (Thomas) Milligan of Charleston, S.C.; 3 great-grandchildren, Jonathan R. and Jason Foults and Jonathan T. Milligan.
Funeral services were held Saturday, August 3, 2002 from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids. Burial followed in the Rosehill Cemetery, Eaton Rapids.
Donald H. Chase
Donald H. Chase, 82, of Nashville, died early Saturday morning at Pennock Hospital, Dec. 7, 2002, from a fall he suffered earlier in the day at home.
Mr. Chase was born Oct. 21, 1920 in Kalamo Township, Eaton County, to Ray and Mayme Chase. His parents were deceased early in his life so Lloyd and Evelyn Hill of Vermontville took him in and helped him through the balance of school years. Mr. Chase never forgot that huge act of kindness by the Hill family. He served in the Army Air Force during World War II, having been stationed in several European countries, but primarily in England. He was a sheet metal worker with the 446th Bomber Group, Eighth Air Force Division. He especially enjoyed an opportunity to fly the “Big birds” whenever they were not in active service. After the war effort was completed, Mr. Chase returned home and went to work as a sheet metal fabricator at an Eaton Rapids factory, and later at the Owens Illinois glass plant, from where he retired 20 years ago. He was a past member of the Vermontville American Legion. The past two decades found him at home, enjoying the exotic pheasants and peafowl he raised and showed to anyone who visited his Maple Grove Bird Barn. He also loved to spend as much time as he could creating small wood working projects in his basement; bird houses were a particular specialty.
Donald and Dora raised four sons between Vermontville and Charlotte. Surviving are David (Ginny) of Vermontville, Danny (Ann) of Columbia, Tenn., Dallas (Shirley) of Nashville and Donald (Barbara) of Bellevue; nine grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and sisters, Guest “Eddie” Traister and Leota Bradley of Battle Creek. Donald was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, Dora; she was his one true love until his death. One grandchild, Mayme Jean, passed away in 1988, and nephew Larry Anderson was lost in action during the Korean Conflict. Funeral services were held Dec. 11 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Rev. Kenneth Vaught officiating. Interment was at Kalamo Cemetery.
Donald R. Chase
Donald R. Chase, 86, of Charlotte, died Friday, Nov. 1, 2002 at Hayes Green Beach Hospital in Charlotte.
Mr. Chase was born June 20, 1916 in Carmel Township, Eaton County, the son of Arno Lane and Mable (Horn) Chase, and was a life-long area resident. He was a retired carpenter, having retired in 1979, and was a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners Local # 1004 in Lansing, Olivet Senior Citizens and the Cheerful Campers.
He is survived by son, Donald (Loraine) Chase of Springport; daughter, Ramona Wonders of Charlotte; three grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and four great-grandchildren and four step great-grandchildren; and half brother, Leo Weeks of Grand Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary (Bradley) Chase on May 16, 1996.
Funeral services were held Nov. 4 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel in Charlotte, with Rev. Michael Arnold of Crossroads United Brethren Church officiating. Interment was at Bosworth Cemetery.

Charles “Chuck” F. Cherry
Charles “Chuck” F. Cherry, age 57 of Mulliken, died Tuesday, January 1, 2002 at a Lansing hospital. He was born July 2, 1944 in Eaton Rapids, the son of John and Ruth (Meyers) Cherry. Chuck was retired from General Motors with 31 years of service, a member and former Committee Man with the U.A.W. Local #652, a member of the V.F.W., and retired charter member of the Brothers of the Ring in Mulliken. Chuck loved fishing and the Canadian Wilderness, he enjoyed repairing and building fly rods and fishing poles and was an avid Red Wings fan.
Surviving are his wife of 33 years, Diana (Kapff); parents, John and Ruth Cherry of Dimondale; 2 brothers, Bruce (Nancy) Cherry of Eaton Rapids and Dan (Rosie) Cherry of Albion; 2 sisters, Carol Cherry of Olivet and Becky (Kirby) Tottingham of Eaton Rapids; several nieces and nephews, aunt, uncles, and cousins.
Funeral services were held Saturday, January 5th, from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids. Burial followed at the Rosehill Cemetery in Eaton Rapids. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the V.F.W. National Home in Eaton Rapids, in memory of Charles F. Cherry.
Diana Lynn Cherry
Diana Lynn (Kapff) Cherry, age 53 of Eaton Rapids, died Tuesday, November 12, 2002 at a Lansing hospital. She was born January 14, 1949 in Eaton Rapids, the daughter of Frederick and Mary (Colgan) Kapff. Diana was a graduate of the Eaton Rapids High School, class of 1967. She was a Licensed Registered Nurse (L.P.N.) with Lansing General Hospital, and due to health had to retire in 1996. Dee was an avid wildlife enthusiast, who especially enjoyed wolves and working in her garden by her husband of 33 years, Charles F. Cherry, who died on January 1, 2002. She was also preceded in death by her father, Frederick Kapff.
Surviving are her mother, Mary Kapff of Eaton Rapids; 2 brothers, Martin Kapff of Plymouth, MI and Steven (Cheryl) Kapff of Eaton Rapids; nephew, Matthew Kapff and great nephew, Julian Matthew Charles Kapff; several other nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services were Saturday, November 16, 2002 from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with Rev. Dr. David D’Arcy of the First Congregational Church, officiating. Burial followed in the Rosehill Cemetery in Eaton Rapids. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to either the Lupus Foundation or the National Wildlife Foundation, envelopes are available at the funeral home.
Deborah E. Chingman
Deborah Elaine Chingman, 48, of Owosso, died Friday, Aug. 16, 2002.
Ms. Chingman was born May 11, 1954 in Lansing, the daughter of Berton and Pauline (Palmer) Eaton.
She is survived by her mother, Pauline of Charlotte; daughters, Melissa (Mike) Moon and Skeeter (John) Campbell, both of Jackson; sons, Andrew (Tammy) Chingman Jr. and Bryan Chingman, both of Mt. Pleasant; 10 grandchildren; sister, Sheila (Robert) Hall of Charlotte; brother, Kevin Eaton of Charlotte; uncle, Arlo Eaton of Charlotte; and aunt, Dolores McGee of Eaton Rapids.
Funeral services were held Aug. 20 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Rev. Jeff Williams officiating. Interment was at Perry Cemetery in Brookfield Township.
Alta M. Christenson
Alta M. Christenson, 84, of Charlotte, died Saturday, March 9, 2002. Mrs. Christenson was born Jan. 14, 1918 in Charlotte, the daughter of Roy Bennett and Blanche (King) Bennett-McManus. She is survived by son, Galen (Dawn) of Vermontville; brother, Richard McManus of Charlotte; and nephew, James “Chuck” McManus of Cloverdale. She was preceded in death by husband, Einard Christenson in January 1959. Funeral services were held March 14 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Rev. Pat Sterling officiating. Interment was at Gresham Cemetery in Chester Township.

Alva Lee Clark
Alva Lee Clark, Jr., infant son of Alva Clark and Jessica Bliss of Springport, passed away Aug. 7, 2002 at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing. He weighed three pounds, 12 ounces.
He is survived by grandparents, Robert and Debbie Bliss, and Terry and Lindy Clark, all of Springport, and Theresa and Richard Simons of Eaton Rapids; great-grandparents, Patty Gerry and Winona Haines; aunts, uncles, and one cousin, Tyler Smith.
Funeral services were held Aug. 12 at Burdens & Sons Funeral Home in Jackson. Interment was at Pheren Cemetery.
