Gertrude Edwards-Newsome-Gayheart
Gertrude Edwards-Newsome-Gayheart, age 74 of Marion, Ohio formerly of Albion, died October 1, 2002 at Marion General Hospital, Marion, OH. She was born February 6, 1928 in Floyd County (Hi-Hat), Kentucky to Hales and Amanda (Smith) Edwards. Gertrude came to Michigan in 1954, she worked for several farms and was a homemaker. She liked gardening and flowers along with being a pet caretaker.
She is survived by her husband, Bill Gayheart of Marion, OH; daughter, Barbara YBarra of Albion; sons, Jesse Newsome of Marion, OH, Frank (Lenore) Newsome of Eaton Rapids; Dale (Diane) Newsome of Marion, OH; 18 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; sister, Minnie (Sis) Getter of Albion; brother, Sam Edwards of Albion; half-brother, Lawrence Edwards of West Virginia and a host of nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Bonnie Kitchen and three brothers, David, Daniel and John Edwards.
Funeral services were held October 4, 2002 at Albion Chapel of Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels with Rev. Earl Martin officiating. Burial was at Albion Memory Gardens. Memorial contributions can be made to the Humane Society in memory of Gertrude Gayheart.
Larry D. Eedy
Larry Dean Eedy, 62, of Potterville, passed away May 4, 2002.
He is survived by his wife, Nan; three daughters, Kris (Tom) Whipple of Potterville, and Carol and Laura Eedy, both of Petoskey; two sons, Jeff (Sue) Hubers of Holland and Greg Hubers of Gladwin; 11 grandchildren; two brothers, Dick of Williamston and Bob (Dimples) of Jackson; several nieces and nephews; father-in-law, Leo (Hanna) VanDyke of Florida; sister-in-law; Sue VanDyke of Grand Rapids; and his dog Butch.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, a sister and his mother-in-law.
Funeral services were held May 7 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Rev. Tom Peters officiating. Interment was at Benton Township Cemetery in Potterville.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association; envelopes are available at the funeral home.
Hilda I. Elston
Hilda I. Elston, age 81 of Eaton Rapids, died Wednesday, May 15, 2002 in Charlotte. Hilda was born July25, 1920 in Eaton County, the daughter of Bert and Delia (Weldon) Getter. Mrs. Elston was a member of the Eaton Rapids Assembly of God Church. She was a former manager of Haffners Dime Store and a cook at Westbrook Inn in Eaton Rapids. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Elston to whom she was married in 1939 and 2 sons, Douglas and Jerry Elston.
Surviving are 3 daughters, Brenda Elston, Janice Place both of Eaton Rapids, Linda (Gary) Brininstool of St. Clair Shores; 2 sons, Herman Elston of Evart, Bruce (Shirley) Elston of Eaton Rapids; 22 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; brother, Dale (Waneta) Getter of Eaton Rapids; 2 sisters, Reva Peterson of Eaton Rapids, Eva Jankovic of Albion.
Funeral services were held May 18, 2002 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids, with Pastor Winford Collins officiating. Interment followed at Rosehill Cemetery, Eaton Rapids. Casket bearers were Jason Elston, James Brininstool, Mark Slaght, Randy Slaght, Rocky Slaght, and Amber Elston. Those desiring may make contributions to the Michigan Lung Association in memory of Hilda Elston.
Nora A. Emenhiser
Nora Alice Emenhiser, 81, of Charlotte, died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002.
Mrs. Emenhiser was born March 5, 1920 in Brookland, Ark., the daughter of John Wesley and Essie Ethel (Robinson) Nelms. She was married to Delmer Emenhiser, who preceded her in death in 1984. She had been a cook at Dick’s Diner in Charlotte and Lillian’s Café in Eaton Rapids.
She is survived by sons, James (Nancy) of Texas, Donald (Anna) of Charlotte and Gary (Sharon) of Union City; daughters, Linda (Jerry) Dunn of Charlotte, Patsy (Lee) Woodhams of Georgia and Gloria (Ed) DeLong of Bellevue; 27 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson; brothers, Creed Nelms of Arkansas and Dean Nelms of Florida; and a sister, Lucille Sparling of Port Huron.
She was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, Cierra Lopez.
Funeral services were held Jan. 7 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Rev. George Fleming officiating. Interment was at Center Eaton Cemetery, Charlotte.
Memorial donations may be made to the Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church in Charlotte. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home, Inc., Charlotte.
Geraldine E. Emery
Geraldine Evelyn Emery, 82, of Charlotte, died Jan. 15, 2002.
Mrs. Emery was born March 2, 1919 in Flint, the daughter of Charles and Cora (Meade) Grundstrom. She enjoyed lots of volunteer work, watching children and sharing flowers with her neighbors. She was a “neighborhood gramma.”
She is survived by husband, Thomas Emery; daughters, Kathi (Tom) Dominguez of DeWitt and Carmen Emery of Holt; sons, Thomas (Barbara) Emery of Charlotte, James (Nancy) of Land O Lakes, Fla., Eugene (Linda) Emery of Vermontville and Gerald (Donna) Lewis of Chicago, Ill.; and 25 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by daughter Charlene Lewis Vaughn.
Family Affirmation Service was held Jan. 19 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Charles Jenson officiating. Interment was at West Carmel Cemetery, Charlotte.
Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home, Inc., Charlotte.
Margaret Erwin
Margaret Schram Erwin, 94, passed away Sept. 29, 2002.
Margaret, daughter of Fred Schram and Flossie Campbell Schram, was born July 13, 1908 in Vermontville, where she lived for the first 20 years of her life. She married Clayton Coleman in 1932 and moved to Texas in 1940. This union produced two children, Carmen Coleman Keys of Houston and Frank Thomas Coleman of Mexico. She taught school in Michigan and Texas. For the last 10 years of her life, Margaret suffered from Alzheimer’s disease.
She is survived by Carmen, Frank, and two grandchildren, Marcus and Tresa Varner.
Harriet J. Estell
Harriet J. Estell, 91, of Charlotte, died Friday, March 29, 2002 in Sebastian, Fla.
Mrs. Estell was born Aug. 19, 1910 in Three Rivers, the daughter of Milton and May (Walton) Rix and had been a Charlotte resident for over 65 years. She was a 1934 graduate of Michigan State College, with a degree in liberal arts, and later earned a certificate in library science. Mrs. Estell was a retired director of the Charlotte Community Library, with 13 years of service, and was a member of the Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church and its Naomi Circle. She served as secretary of the Camp Frances Board of Directors, was a member of the Charlotte Civic Theatre, the Eaton County Historical Society, Friend of the Charlotte Public Library and the Bridge Club. Special honors received included: a Certificate of Dedication for outstanding service to Delta Kappa Gamma; Harriet Young Estell Day, Sept. 11, 1994, by proclamation of the mayor of Charlotte for service in promoting the growth and development of the Charlotte Public Library; charter founder, The American Family Immigration History Center, Certificate of Appreciation issued July 17, 1998; Merit of Recognition for outstanding service rendered to the city of Charlotte Dec. 4, 1971; and Theta Alpha Phi National Honorary Dramatic Fraternity.
She is survived by her husband, Wilbur Estell; son, Lewis (Catherine) Young of Charlotte; daughter, Signia Rix Young (Stanley) Warner of Amherst, Mass.; grandchildren, Joel Young, Christine Young Menzie, Mitchell Warner, Heather Warner-Rice and Ingrid Warner Bryan; and great-grandchildren, Jennifer Young, Janelle Young, Alexandria Bryan, Riley Bryan, Renee Bryan and Samuel Menzie.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Lewis Young; son, Charles D. Young; brother, James Walton Rix; and sister, Madra Rix Oliver Sletton.
Funeral services were held April 4 at Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church, Charlotte, with Rev. George Fleming officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church or the Charlotte Community Library. Arrangements were by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte.
Dennis Evans
Dennis Evans, 56, of Vermontville, died June 26, 2002 in Ann Arbor.
Mr. Evans was born Sept. 25, 1945 in Lansing, the son of Theodore and Beatrice (Kill) Evans. He had been employed by Custom Classic Creation in Potterville and was a member of the Potterville Church of the Nazarene and Hasting Car Club. He served with the U.S. Air Force in Vietnam.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Judith (Powell) Evans; daughter, Teresa (James) Keel of Charlotte; son, Scott (Melissa) Evans of Delton; grandchildren, Wendy, Aleisha, Ryan and Amanda.
He was preceded in death by his father in 1984, his mother in 1968, and a granddaughter in 1991.
Funeral services were held June 29 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Rev. Mark Slocum officiating. Interment was at East Sebewa Cemetery in Sunfield.
