Jack L. Webb
Jack L. Webb, age 75 of Eaton Rapids, died Monday, March 18, 2002 in Eaton Rapids. He was born April 30, 1926 in Charlotte, the son of Orville and Folena (Johnson) Webb. Mr. Webb was an Air Force veteran of World War II, serving in the Asian Theatre in Japan. He worked 10 years as a Chef with several fine restaurants including the Grande Hotel on Mackinaw Island. Mr. Webb was a retired Supervisor for General Motors, Oldsmobile Division of Lansing, serving 30 years and retiring in 1982. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother and sister.
Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Colleen; 5 children, Shelley (Kent) Dillingham of Eaton Rapids, Mark (Jama) Webb of Edmond, OK, Lee (Frank) Kane of Charlotte, Matt (Laura) Webb of DeWitt and Burr (Elizabeth) Webb of Eaton Rapids; 8 grandchildren; sister, Patricia (Robert) DeGues of Coopersville, MI; sister-in-law, Betty Webb of Galesburg; several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services were held Palm Sunday, March 24, 2002 from the Calvary Lutheran Church in Eaton Rapids with Pastor Mark Eckert officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either Calvary Lutheran Church or Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Michigan Chapter or to a Charity of one’s choice. The family was served through the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids.
Denise Wells
Denise Marie Wells passed away Monday, Sept. 23, 2002.
Mrs. Wells was born March 10, 1952 in Detroit. She moved to the Vermontville area in 1980 and proceeded to make the entire community her friend. Helping other was her greatest pleasure, including Christmas baskets, Vermontville Fire and Ambulance as a first responder, room mom and baseball mom. Many will remember of her seven years at the Ole Cookstove alongside her husband Nyle.
She is survived by her best friend and husband, Nyle; children, Annie Wells of Lansing, Ryan (Michelle) Wells of Charlotte and Dena Burton of Lansing; five grandchildren, Ravin, Kali, Brian, Austin and Cameron; parents, Fred and Maryann Gagne; sisters, Peggy (Gary) Peterman, Teresa (Bryan) Hall, Eva (Mark) Wozniac and Maryann (Terry) Walter; brothers, Paul and Freddy Gagne; father-in-law, Laws Carroll; mother-in-law, Phyllis Wells; sister-in-law, Sally (Steve) Remple; brother-in-law, Robert (Sandi) Wells; sister-in-law, Faith (Chris) McDowell; grandfather, William Skelly; special aunt and uncle, Betty and Sterling Wells; 23 nieces and nephews; and an innumerable host of friends.
She was preceded in death by her son David in 1976.
Funeral services were held Sept. 25 at Pray Funeral Home, with Rev. Glenn Litchfield and Rev. Don Roscoe officiating. Interment was at Woodlawn Cemetery in Vermontville.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Grace Community Church Building Fund.
Roger E. Wells
Roger Earl Wells, 69, of Sebring, Fla., died Monday, Feb. 4, 2002 at his home.
Mr. Wells was a native of Grand Ledge and had been spending winters in Sebring since 1995 from Mulliken. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, receiving the Occupational Medal and General Commendations. He was a past master and life member of Nashville Lodge #255 F.&A.M., Nashville, Mich. He was also a member of Kalamo Chapter #399 O.E.S. in Kalamo, Scottish Rite, American Legion in Vermontville, a life member of VFW Post #8260 in Nashville, and the Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by his wife, Hazel Conner Wells of Sebring, Fla.; son, Timothy (Lynda) Wells of Vermontville; two daughters, Kimberly (Garry) Bakos of Stanton and Toni (Steven) Cambric of Stanton; two brother, Alton and Jerry; three sister, Marjorie Guy, Marilee Fullerton and Salliann McConnell; eight grandchildren, Tressa Carter, Travis Carter, Marci Bakos, Carmen Wells, Patrick Wells, Erica Finch, Gabe Ulrich and Erin Cambric.
He was preceded in death by wife of 44 years, Nancy Eastma Wells, sister Peg Ypms and brother James Wells.
Services were held Feb. 16 at Vermontville Bible Church. Interment was at the Sunfield Cemetery.
Arrangements were by Fountain Funeral Home in Avon Park, Fla. Local arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte.
Fred G. West
Fred Gordon West, 86, of Charlotte, died Tuesday, May 7, 2002 in Charlotte.
Mr. West was born Feb. 26, 1916 in Detroit, the son of James and Vivian West. He was the chaplain for VFW Post 2406 and Dads Post 2406, drove for both the Mobile Meals and Meals on Wheels programs, and was active in local bowling leagues. He was involved in many volunteer activities including Eaton Clothing Bank, and was a former Boy Scout leader in Detroit and in local Boy Scout units. He was also involved with Peace Lutheran Church.
He is survived by two daughters, Sally Rose of Battle Creek and Patricia (Jerry) Evans of Westland; son, Robert West of Charlotte; two grandchildren, Cherie Brothers and Jerry Evans Jr.; and two great-grandchildren, Haley and Michael Brothers.
Funeral services were held May 10 at Peace Lutheran Church, with Pastor Noel Hall-Niemann officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Fred West Fund at Peace Lutheran Church. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte.
Cynthia Wetzel-Brooks
Cynthia Wetzel-Brooks, 39, of Vermontville, died Friday, March 29, 2002.
Ms. Brooks was born June 26, 1962 in Alma, the daughter of Donald and Gloria (Smith) Wetzel of Vermontville. She most enjoyed being a mother, raising her two sons. She also enjoyed her family’s dairy farm and photography. She collected cow figurines and items. Ms. Brooks was most recently employed by Balzers Tool Coating, Inc. In the past she was employed at Century Mutual Insurance Co. and as a DHIA milk tester for many years.
She is survived by sons, Daniel and Jarrod; her parents; sisters, Kim (Joel) Dixon of Connecticut and Pam (Mark) Root of Lansing; brothers, Kevin (Lisa) of Lansing, Jeff (Chelsey) of Nashville and Chad Wetzel of Vermontville; grandmother, Donnalee Wetzel of Vermontville; and four nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held April 2 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Elder Larry Marlin officiating. Interment was at Woodlawn Cemetery in Vermontville.
Joy M. Whipple
Joy M. Whipple, 66, of Nashville, died Friday, Dec. 13, 2002 at Hayes Green Beach Hospital in Charlotte.
Mrs. Whipple was born Dec. 21, 1935 in Saranac, the daughter of John and Rachael (Fischer) Marker. She loved cooking and enjoyed having friends and family to her house for meals. She enjoyed fishing and loved spending time with her family and was very affectionate toward them all, although she was extremely outspoken and known to be stubborn at times.
Surviving are her significant other, Dennis Harwood of Nashville; four daughters, Mona Reid of Nashville, Shanon Whipple and Tara Whipple, both of Hastings, and Linda Curry of Wyoming; one son, Craig (Rhonda) Whipple of Texas; six stepchildren, Diana (Vaughn) Reid, Dennis Harwood Jr. and Marcia (Chris) Ruedisueli, all of Nashville, Patty Musser and Sara Harwood (Brent Martin), both of Vermontville, and Laura (Steve) Blakney of Marshall; 27 grandchildren, including special granddaughter, Jordanna; and seven great-grandchildren.
Services were held Dec. 16 at Maple Valley Chapel in Nashville. Memorial contributions may be made to the family.
Orvillean White
Orvillean White, age 74 of Fair Haven, Michigan and formerly of Eaton Rapids, died Wednesday, December 18, 2002 at the St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Clinton Township, Michigan. She was born September 2, 1928 in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of Orville and Edith (Moore) Strachan. Orvillean spend the majority of her career years as an employee of some prominent financial institutions from the Lansing area. In Eaton Rapids, she was a leader in local politics, being elected to the Eaton Rapids City Council and to the Eaton County Planning Commission, and was a founding member and activist of the Reform Party of Michigan. Preceding her in death was her husband George on August 7, 1997.
Surviving are her children, Michael D. White of Burlison, Texas, Patrick R. White of Eaton Rapids and Sandra K. (Curtis) Mince of Fair Haven, Michigan; grandsons, Robert and Richard White; granddaughters, Tabetha and Ashley Mince; great granddaughter, Daisy Mae White; brother, Chuck (Kay) Iversen of Lansing.
Funeral services will be Friday, December 27, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with the Rev. Harold DeMott of the South Church of the Nazarene, Lansing, officiating. Burial will follow in the Deepdale Memorial Park in Lansing. Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
Elmer Harold Whiting
Elmer H. Whiting, age 84 of Eaton Rapids, died Friday, March 15, 2002 in Okemos. He was born January 18, 1918 in Bondville, IL, the son of Henry and Rena Whiting. Mr. Whiting served in the Army during World War II and was a retired Machinist with over 30 years of service for Wohlert Corp. in Lansing. He was preceded in death by 6 brothers and 1 sister; Henry, Herman, Lawrence, Charles, and Clyde Whiting and Eunice Peterman.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Lorraine; 4 children, Elaine (Willard) Blackburn of Lansing, Harold (Bev) Whiting of Eaton Rapids, Margaret (Daniel) Yerke of Ada and Wayne Whiting of Lansing; 9 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Truda, Nellie and Florence Whiting, Laura Brooks and Erma Herman; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 18 from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with Rev. Mark Eckert of the Calvary Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial followed in the Munger Cemetery in Eaton Rapids. Pallbearers were Jason Harju, Mary Courter, Bill Sullivan, Star Sullivan, Rick Whiting and Sue Whiting. For those desiring, a memorial contribution may be made to the Ingham County Medical Care Facility in memory of Elmer H. Whiting.
Ruby C. Whitlock
Ruby C. Whitlock, 78, of Charlotte, died Sunday, Aug. 4, 2002.
Mrs. Whitlock was born in Cock County, Tenn., the daughter of David and Zona (Miller) Maness. She retired from Eaton County Medical Care Facility.
She is survived by daughter, Betty (Wayne) Webb of Charlotte; granddaughters, Betty Maria Brown of Oklahoma, and Peggy Sue (Dave) Gardner and Carla Rae (Mike Fell), both of Charlotte; grandsons, Thomas Winters of Charlotte and Matthew Ashley of North Carolina; nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Fletcher Lee Ashley and second husband, Franklin Whitlock; son, Bob Ashley; and great-grandson, Daniel Fell.
Funeral services were held Aug. 8 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte.
