Marilynn E. Van Lake
Marilynn E. Van Lake, 78, of Atlanta, Mich., died Aug. 21, 2002 at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey.
Mrs. Van Lake was born Feb. 20, 1924 in Benton Township, the daughter of William and Bessie (Merrill) Weinschenk. She grew up and attended school in Potterville, where she graduated from high school. She then attended Lansing Business University for two years. On July 4, 1945 she married Raymond Van Lake in Charlotte. They lived in Eaton County for many years. Mrs. Van Lake worked at Michigan State University as a secretary for many years and retired in 1984. After retirement, she and her husband moved to Atlanta in 1985 where they have lived since. Mrs. Van Lake’s family was very special to her and she loved spending time with them. She also loved to camp, sew and do crossword puzzles.
She is survived by her husband, Raymond; two sons, Ron (Paullett) of Banister and Thomas (Phyllis) of Eagle; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and daughters-in-law, Cathy Van Lake of Potterville and Linda Van Lake of Lansing.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Fay Weinschenk; and two sons, Robert and Jon.
Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7 at Potterville United Methodist Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Diabetes Association. Arrangements were by Stone Funeral Home of Petoskey.
Stanley E. VanSplintern
Stanley Earl VanSplintern, 71, of Charlotte, died May 19, 2002 in Charlotte.
Mr. VanSplintern was born July 16, 1930 in Charlotte, the son of Roy VanSplintern and Edith (Taylor) VanSplintern. He was a member of the Charlotte Eagles, and an avid hunter, fisherman and outdoorsman. He also enjoyed stock car racing and pool.
He is survived by his wife, Edna; son, Robert (Sandy) of Charlotte; daughters, Debbie Butts and Jodi VanSplintern, both of Charlotte; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and sister, Tonya (Mark) Cook of Charlotte.
He was preceded in death by daughter Susan in 1992.
Funeral services were held May 22 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Chuck Jensen officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Michigan Heart Association; envelopes are available at the funeral home.
Madelyn V. VanTyle
Madelyn Vivian VanTyle, 77, died Thursday, March 14, 2002.
Mrs. VanTyle was born June 15, 1924 in Rising Sun, Ind., the daughter of Denver and Georgia (Lostutter) Dunning. She married Marvin VanTyle on April 26, 1941 in Rising Sun, Ind.; he survives. She lived in Rising Sun until she moved to Streator, Ill., in 1941, where she worked for Thatcher Glass Mfg. for 16 years. She and her husband moved to Charlotte in 1961, where she worked at Owens-Illinois Glass, retiring in 1987, and then moving back to Streator. Mrs. VanTyle was a member of Women of the Moose, Streator Eagles Auxiliary, Streator Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1492 Auxiliary and the Streator Women’s Bowling Association.
She is survived by her husband; daughters, Sandy (Mick) Ligori of Streator, Ill., Karla (Doug) Roll of Charlotte and Sharon Spivey of Rockingham, N.C.; brother, Leslie (Hilda) Dunning of Louisville, Ky.; sister, Audrey (Lowell) Kent of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Doris Kent of Florida; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral services were held March 17 at Solon & Baker Funeral Home in Streator, Ill. Interment was at Hillcrest Memorial Park. Pallbearers were Doug Roll, Billy Braden, Frank Ligori, Jim Meeker, Scott Orban, Lowell Kent, Jim Ligori and Gene Taylor. Honorary pallbearers were Dena Meeker, Michelle Orban and Erin and Kristen Roll.
Sarah Jane Vermillion
Sarah Jane Vermillion of Valley Twp., Allegan, MI, died Wednesday, December 27, 2002 at the home of her daughter in Allegan. Mrs. Vermillion was born September 20, 1924 in Toledo, OH, the daughter of Austin and Flossie (Myers) Butler.
Surviving are 4 children, Nancy (Harl) Blank of Allegan, Austin (Sandy) Lee, Dorothea (David) Morris, and Don (Holly) Lee, all of Eaton Rapids; 11 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; 3 stepchildren and 13 step grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter, Denise Lee, and 2 sons, Dennis and Billy Lee.
Memorial services and a luncheon was held Monday, December 30, 2002 at the Allegan Eagles Lodge. At Mrs. Vermillion’s request cremation took place. Family graveside services will be held in Crystal Cemetery, Crystal, MI, in the spring. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Assoc. Arrangements by the Gorden Funeral Residence, Allegan Chapel.
Mildred Markle Wade nee Fuller
Mildred Markle Wade, nee Fuller died on October 21, 2002 in Remus, Michigan. She was 100 years of age. Mildred was born on her family’s farm in rural Springport, MI to Elmor and Herminah Fuller. She had two brothers, one of which died in infancy, and the other in the 1st World War. In her early days she attended a one-room schoolhouse for 3 years. She then went on to the Eaton Rapids schools. Her 1920 graduating class included her future husband, her youngest son’s future father-in-law and herself as class officers. After graduation, she attended Ypsilanti Normal school and received her teaching certificate. When she later married she became a full-time mother. Widowed in 1940, she returned to college at MSC and earned at Teacher’s Degree, then proceeded to serve in the Grand Ledge school system as an English teacher and later as the school librarian. She later used her librarian skills to start up a library for her church. In 1967 she retired and began her life-long dream of seeing the world. She traveled to 6 continents and nearly 100 countries. For her 70th birthday she went on an Africa safari. On her 80th birthday she took a hot air balloon ride and on her 85th sailed on a 35-foot sailboat out of San Diego. She was also named “Grand Ledge’s Outstanding Women” in 1974. At the age of 83, she married a long-time friend, L.M. Wade, and moved to California. At L.M.’s death she returned to Michigan and lived in the Greater Lansing area until moving to Mecosta, MI in 1997 to stay with her son and daughter-in-law. Mildred was preceded in death by 2 husbands; a son and daughter-in-law, Ferris and Claire Markle of Iowa, a son-in-law, William Abbruzzese of Grand Ledge; a grandson, Edmund Markle of Iowa; and a stepdaughter, Barbara Wade of California.
Surviving are her daughter, Ernestine Abbruzzese of Grand Ledge; son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Dorothy Markle of Mecosta, MI; step-son, Larry Wade of California; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Friday, October 25th, at the Peters & Murray Funeral Home, Grand Ledge, with interment following at Griffith Cemetery, Springport, MI. For those desiring, contributions may be made to the World Vision Fund.
Chris W. Wagner, Sr.
Chris W. Wagner, Sr., age 53 of Eaton Rapids, died Tuesday morning, December 17, 2002 at his home following a long illness. Mr. Wagner was born August 16, 1949 in Mt. Clemens, Michigan a son of James and Joyce (Jones) Wagner. Hew as a carpenter and Vietnam veteran, retiring from the Army in 2000. His mother, Joyce, preceded him in death in 1998.
Surviving are two sons, Stephen H. Wagner of Eaton Rapids, Chris W. Wagner, Jr.; 4 grandchildren; his father, James M. Wagner of Charlotte; one brother, James L. Wagner of Eaton Rapids; one sister, Ruth Ann Wagner of Charlotte; special uncles, Richard A. (Marilyn) Wagner of Grand Ledge and their sons, Rodney, Richard & Robert and Douglas (Gladys) Wagner of Edmore; special aunts, Opal (George) Thayer and Ella Alexander, both of Sheridan and Cathy Gaupel of Eaton Rapids.
Services were held Saturday at Field & Leik Funeral Home, Dimondale, with Rev. Dr. Margaret Zee Jones officiating. Military honors were provided by the Eaton Rapids and Onondaga V.F.W. Posts at Munger Cemetery, Eaton Rapids.
Betty K. Wainwright
Betty Kay (Clever) Wainright, 70, of Charlotte, died Thursday, Nov. 7, 2002.
Mrs. Wainwright was born May 29, 1932 in Hastings, the daughter of Keith and Ernestine (Windeknechdt) Montgomery. She was an executive secretary at Carter’s Inc. She enjoyed arts and crafts shows, animals, and was a member of Charlotte Congregational Church.
She is survived by her husband, Floyd “Bud” Wainwright; daughters, Pat (Jerry Felty) Sulcer of Bradenton, Fla., and Kim (Chuck) Raleigh of Tampa, Fla.; step-daughter, Tracee Slack of DeWitt; grandchildren, Andrea Bethea, Russell and Coty Slack; great-granddaughter, Maya Bethea; and sibling, Brenda Hart.
Funeral services were held Nov. 12 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Rev. Patricia Stirling officiating. Interment was at Gresham Cemetery in Charlotte.
Memorial contributions may be made to Eaton Community Hospice or Hospice House of Mid-Michigan.
Melverna M. Warren
Melverna M. (McConnell) Warren, 99, of Grand Ledge, died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002 at Moore’s Adult Foster Care in Charlotte.
Mrs. Warren was born Nov. 13, 1902 in Charlotte, a daughter of Gordon and Addie McConnell, and was a rural school teacher. She was a 74-year member and past matron of Dimondale OES #363, past mother advisor of the Rainbow Girls, past president of Eaton County Association (1952-53), and an honorary life member of Michigan Grand Chapter.
She is survived by her son, Lynn (Marjorie) Warren of Grand Ledge; five grandchildren, Michael (Bert) Warren, Tom Warren, Jeff Warren, Lynda (Jeff) Clark and Ronda (Maurie) McKinney; seven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; sister, Katherine Dodgson; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude; two sons, Royce and Ronald; and a sister, Mildred Perry.
Services were held Jan. 5 at Field & Leik Funeral Home, Dimondale, with Rev. Thomas Peters officiating. Interment was at Deepdale Memorial Park. Eastern Star services were held Jan. 4 at the funeral home.
Memorial donations may be made to Eaton County Meals on Wheels. Arrangements were by Field & Leik Funeral Home, Dimondale.
Donna J. Wawiernia
Donna Janet Wawiernia, 60, of Charlotte, died Monday, Nov. 25, 2002.
Mrs. Wawiernia was born April 13, 1942 in Des Moines, Iowa, the daughter of James and Lucile (Slanker) Florence. She was a retired office manager and bookkeeper for Rudoni Management. Mrs. Wawiernia was a great supporter of her grandchildren and Eaton County 4-H. She was a member of Vermontville Congregational Church.
She is survived by son, Scott (Paula) Wawiernia of Columbia Station, Ohio; daughter, Tracey (Jeff) Gordeneer of Vermontville; step-son, Tony (Charlie) Wawiernia of Vermontville; five grandchildren, Brandy, Trevor, Tim, Ashley and Matt; sister, Jean Brand of Charlotte and Judy Hamilton of Florida; and brother, Richard (Betsy) Florence of California.
She was preceded in death by her husband Andrew in 1996.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 30 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Rev. Eric Lison officiating. Interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery in Vermontville.
