Corbin A. Gardner
Corbin A. Gardner, 14, of Nashville, died Monday, July 22, 2002.
Corbin was born Nov. 27, 1987 in Charlotte, the son of Forrest Allan Gardner and Gail (Miller) Gray. He was a student at Maple Valley School and loved to hunt and fish. He raised ducks and geese and was a Bobby LaBonte fan.
He is survived by his father, Forest Allan and step-mother, Patty Gardner of Nashville; mother Gail Gray of Battle Creek; sisters, Courtney and Hana; brother, Jacob; grandparents, Lee Joppie of Vermontville, Roger and Diane Gardner of Vermontville, Robert Miller of Texas; great-grandmother, Dorothy Mahar of Vermontville; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Family Affirmation Services were held July 25 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with R. Raymond Rossell officiating. Interment was at Woodlawn Cemetery in Vermontville.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Nashville fire and ambulance departments.
Ruth E. Gardner
Ruth Elaine Gardner, of Maple City, passed away Dec. 10, 2002 at the home of her daughter, surrounded by her family.
Mrs. Gardner was born in Flint on Feb. 23, 1924 to Roy and Fern Woodrow Ormond. On Oct. 25, 1946 she married Paul M. Gardner in Traverse City. Together they had three children. She served as a WAVE during World War II and was stationed at the U.S. Naval Hospital in San Diego.
She is survived by her children, Michael, Thomas (Barb Zupin) and Katie (Dave) Taberski, affectionately known as Mully, Bit and Kitty; and sisters, Barbara Ormond and Ann Engebresten. At her request, there will be no services and cremation has taken place. Memorial contributions may be made to Cherryland Humane Society, 1750 Ahlberg Road, Traverse City, MI 49686, where she found her loyal companion, Buttercup. Arrangements were by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
Zane Alexander Gardner
Zane Alexander Gardner, age 3 years of Eaton Rapids, died Monday, February 11, 2002 in Lasing. Zane was born November 12, 1998 in Lansing. His beautiful smile and winning personality will be missed by his loving parents, Todd and Lynette (Henderson) Gardner and his brother, Wyatt age 5.
Also surviving are his grandparents, Larry and Lorene Henderson, Wilmena “Billie” Gardner all of Eaton Rapids; great grandparents, Delbert and Birdie Payne, Doug and Buffy Henderson, Millie B. Summer all of Eaton Rapids, Eve “Bama” Lyons of Lansing, Leona Gardner of Shelby Twp., Opal Righter of MO; 2 uncles and 5 aunts; and several cousins. Zane was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Ray Gardner, Jr. and Herbert Riemann.
Funeral services were held on Friday, February 15, 2002, at the Charlotte Seventh Day Adventist Church with Pastor David Kobliska officiating. Interment followed at Munger Cemetery, Eaton Rapids. Those desiring may make contributions to the Fetal Diagnostic and Therapy at Vanderbilt or March of Dimes in memory of Zane A. Gardner.
Betty Garvey
Betty Jane (Stewart) Garvey, 76, of Nashville, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2002 in Leesburg, Fla.
Mrs. Garvey was born June 30, 1925 in Lansing, the daughter of Henry and Thelma (Schnepp) Stewart. She graduated from Bellevue High School in 1944 and married her high-school sweetheart, Bernard Junior Garvey, on Jan. 30 of the same year. In 1946, after Bernard returned from World War II, they bough their life-long home in Nashville and moved in with their newborn daughter Diana. They then added to their family, daughters Brinda and Nancy, and son Bernie.
Mrs. Garvey enjoyed entertaining and cooking for family and friends; playing the guitar and singing with her twin sister Barbara; collecting dolls; sewing; being a member of the VFW Auxiliary, Eastern Star and Young Mother’s Club; wintering in Florida; and The Wheel of Fortune. Together, Mrs. Garvey and her family spent summers at their cottage, and winters snowmobiling, square dancing, micro midget racing and spending time together.
She will be remembered as a dedicated and loving, wife, mother, grandma and friend, and especially for the care she gave Bernard in his time of need.
She is survived by her children, Brinda and Dave Hawkins, Nancy and Richard Byrd, and Bernie and Donna (Decker) Garvey, all of Nashville; grandchildren, Heather (Allen) Bross, Stacee (Scott) English, Marcee (Brian) Charterdon, Retha (Steve) Fox, Mindy (Dennis) Downing and BeeGee Garvey; great-grandchildren, Alex and Colyn Reed, and Jacob Bross; her twin sister, Barbara (Raymond) Barlond; brothers, Harold (Bessie) Stewart and Bill (Anita) Stewart; sister, Judy (Bob) Bigford; and sisters-in-law, Melva Turner and Marie Garvey.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard Garvey Jr.; parents, Henry and Thelma (Schnepp) Stewart; and daughter, Diana Garvey.
Services were held Feb. 17 at Nashville Baptist Church, Nashville, with Pastor Lester DeGroot officiating. Interment was at Lakeview Cemetery in Nashville.
Arrangements were by Maple Valley Chapel in Nashville.
Ella Marie Garvey
Ella Marie Garvey, 71, of Nashville died June 22 at her home. She was born Jan. 5, 1931 in Vermontville, the daughter of Rex and Myrtle (Heaven) Hampton.
She was raised in the Vermontville area and attended areas schools. On May 11, 1948 she married Raymond “Jack” Garvey in Nashville. The couple lived several years in Texas, as Jack served his country at Shepard Air Force Base. After Jack’s retirement from the service in 1965, the couple returned to the Nashville area where Marie began her work at the Barry County Medical Facility. She retired in 1988 after serving 23 years as nutrition specialist and dietitian. During her spare time she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, painting the hand-crafted wood projects that Jack created, watching movies and reading. In April 1972, Marie gave her life to the Lord.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond “Jack” Garvey, grandson Aaron McIntyre, parents Rex and Myrtle (Heaven) Hampton and brother, Pete Hampton.
She is survived by daughters Linda (Hugh) Wolcott, Kirsti (Darwin) McIntyre, Rex-Ann (Dion) Rasey, all of Nashville, Kathy (Rock) Ludwick of Bronson, son Raymond (Char) Garvey of Nashville, brothers, Lavern (Bev) Hampton, Norman Hampton, sisters Crystal (Rex) Walters, Donna (Tom) Salik, June (Dick) Dickinson, sisters-in-law Marge (Russ) Bennett and Melva Turner, 16 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and many special nieces, nephews and special friends.
Funeral services were held June 25 at the Nashville Assembly of God Church. Burial followed in Lakeview Cemetery in Nashville.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.

Raymond Garvey
Raymond “Jack” Garvey, 77, of Nashville, died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002 at his residence in Nashville.
Mr. Garvey was born Jan. 12, 1925 in Lansing, the son of Bernard and Orpha (Barnum) Garvey. He spent his childhood in Lansing, later moving to the Nashville area. He attended area schools and earned a GED while serving the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1945. Mr. Garvey married Ella Marie Hampton on May 11, 1948 in Nashville. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1948 until his retirement 18 years later in 1965, retiring with the rank of E-5 staff sergeant. After his retirement, the family left Texas and returned to Michigan. Mr. Garvey then engaged in the plumbing business and spent many years doing woodworking, hunting, fishing and gardening. He walked at least four miles each day, rain or shine.
He is survived by his wife, Ella of Nashville; daughters, Linda (Hugh) Wolcott, Kristi (Darwin) McIntyre and Rex-Ann (Dion) Rasey, all of Nashville, and Kathy (Rock) Ludwick of Bronson; son, Ray (Charlene) Garvey of Nashville; sister, Melva Turner of California; sister-in-law, Betty Garvey of Nashville; 16 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard and Orpha (Barnum) Garvey; brother, Bernard “Junior” Garvey; and a grandson, Aaron Lee McIntyre.
Services were held Jan. 19 at Maple Valley Chapel, Nashville, with Pastor Glenn Branham officiating.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements were by Maple Valley Chapel, Nashville.
Clarence Garvie
Clarence Max Garvie, 81, of Bellevue, died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2002. Mr. Garvie was born November 15, 1921, in Lansing, the son of Virgil and Arlene (Ling) Garvie.
He retired from the assembly line work at Oldsmobile, then was a truck driver for Maeward until his retirement.
He is survived by his wife Doris (Casler), son Dale (Carol) Garvie of Charlotte, Michigan, daughter, Cheri Cain of Olivet, Michigan, son Lynn (Carolyn) Garvie of Charlotte, son Scott Garvie of Bellevue, daughter Gail Alvarez of Florida, nine grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, sister Pat (Art) Lumbert of Charlotte, brother Frank (Mary) Watson of Augusta, Michigan, and sister Wanita Watson of Athens, Michigan. Interment will be in Ft. Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, Michigan.
Matthew Phillip Gewain, II
Matthew Phillip Gewain II, age 81 of Lincoln, NE, died Thursday, May 16, 2002. He was born to Matthew Phillip & Marie Emma (Flosbach) Gewain on July 13, 1920 in Fanwood, New Jersey. He was a World War II Air Core Veteran completing 26 missions as a Bombardier in England. He worked as a salesman for Farmland Industries from 1969-1981 and was business manager for MPG, Inc. He was a member of VFW 131 and former member of Eaton Rapids Michigan Masonic Lodge and Kiwanis. Matt was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He married his teenage sweetheart, Jane Blake, and they were married 59 years. His four grandchildren, Kim, Blake, Lexie, & Grant were the loves of his life and his reason for living. He could be found at all types of sporting events and was the 5th grade boys Fastbreakers YMCA Basketball team’s number one fan. He was an avid reader and enjoyed fishing, watching sports and keeping in touch with family and friends with the long lost art of handwritten letters. Matt had even conquered the internet and had begun corresponding with his oldest granddaughter, via e-mail, while she was away at college. Matt had an intense love of people and made it a point to greet others by name. He will be remembered fondly for his generous soul & warm sense of humor.
Survivors include wife, Jane (Blake) Gewain of Lincoln, NE; sons, Matthew P. (Gail) Gewain of Tehachapi, CA and Dr. William J. (Sharon) Gewain of Lincoln; daughter, Susan J. (Jonathan) Bohling of Lincoln; grandchildren, Kimberly M. Gewain, Blake M. Wewel, Alexandra J. Bohling, Grant M. Bohling all of Lincoln; brother Richard G. (Jeanne) Gewain of Olney, MD; sister, Lois Johnson of Lakewood, NJ. He was preceded in death by his parents and uncle & aunt, Wilhelm & Maria Flosbach.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 22, 2002 at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home, 6800 S. 14th Street, Lincoln, NE. Burial to be at Lincoln Memorial Park. Military honors by Ft. Riley Kansas Honor Guard. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or Methodist Children’s Hospital Cardiac Unit, Omaha, NE.
