Betty J. Gibbs
Betty Jane Gibbs, 76, of Grand Ledge, died Sunday, Dec. 1, 2002.
Mrs. Gibbs was born March 3, 1926, in DeWitt, the daughter of Charles M. and Myrta (Ames) Conner.
Betty had been employed by Ideal Medical – Puritan Bennett Co. in Lansing retiring in 1984 and had lived in Eaton Country most of her life. She was a member of the Congregational Church of Grand Ledge. She enjoyed reading, world puzzles and music.
She is survived by son Karl Jr. “Gabe” (Bernice) Gibbs of Eaton Rapids, Michigan, daughters Susan Gibbs of Grand Ledge, Neva (Joe) Lewis of Texas, four grandchildren; Soloman Reynolds, Karl Gibbs, Charisma and Jericho Lewis, sisters Mildred Stimer of Grand Ledge, Peggy Swan of Traverse City, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by sons Terry Wilbur in 1952 and Martin Wilbur in 1972 and daughter Shelia Wilbur Thomas, parents, brother, Charles, and sister, Sally.
A memorial service will be held in the spring at Gresham Cemetery.
Annie I. Gibson
Annie Isabel “Grannie” Gibson, 74, of Charlotte, died Oct. 4, 2002. Mrs. Gibson was born Nov. 17, 1927 in Wheelright, Ky., the daughter of James and Angeline (Orretta) Pishner. She was a loving and caring person. She loved people, embroidery, collectibles and macramé.
She is survived by her husband of 37 years, Kendall Gibson of Charlotte; Robert David (Ethel) Whitaker, Joseph Vincent (Melissa) Whitaker and Tamara Ellen King, all of Charlotte, Brenda (Leslie) Cox, Phillip (Lema) Gibson of Mousie, Ky., Geraldine (Herbie) Stamper and Clem (Don) McDaniels; 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; sisters, Dolores Harries and Vena (Otis) Newsome, both of Charlotte, and Victoria (Colombus) Martin of Bevinsville, Ky.
She was preceded in death by sister, Mary Ellen Nance; and brother, Joseph Rossi.
Funeral services were held Oct. 7 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Father Robideau officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte.
Memorial contributions may be made to Ingham Hospice.
Kenneth Eugene Gibson
Kenneth Eugene Gibson died November 24, 2002 as a result of a fall at his home in Stockbridge. Kenneth was born September 23, 1946 in Jackson, Michigan. He attended high school in Eaton Rapids. He spent many happy years as a youth in Eaton Rapids and had many friends here. He served in Germany during the Vietnam War. As a result of illness contracted in the service, he spend most of his adult life in Adult Care Homes. In recent years he appreciated much loving attention from his Mother and brother Terry.
He will be sadly missed by his mother, Lillie Caudill; 6 brothers and sisters, Margaret (Leonard) Kreischer, Terry Gibson, Delaine (David) Bria, Reatha (Dale) Gibson, Dan (CiCi) Gibson, Anthony (Kathy) Gibson; many nieces, nephews, grand nieces & grand nephews.
Arrangements are pending at the Skinner Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids.
Thomas J. Gibson
Thomas J. Gibson, 79, of Sturgis, died Saturday, April 6, 2002 at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. Mr. Gibson was born Jan. 1, 1923 in Albany, Ga., a son of Thomas Brady and Viola (Chancey) Gibson. He had been a Sturgis resident since 1940, coming from Georgia. On Jan. 10, 1948 he married Pearl Shook in LaGrange, Ind.; she died Oct. 29, 1998. He retired from Addressograph Multigraph of Atlanta, Ga., after more than 20 years of employment. Mr. Gibson had also been employed by Taylor Produce and Paramount Furniture Co., both in Sturgis. For several years he was a flight instructor at Sturgis Airport, and piloted the first night flight at the airport. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict, serving as a bomber pilot and earning the rank of major. Mr. Gibson enjoyed fishing, woodworking, horseback riding, yard work, landscaping and time spent with family.
He is survived by one son, David (Gail) Gibson of Anderson, S.C.; two daughters, Janis (Keith) Tirrell of Charlotte and Cheryl McNew of Sturgis; eight grandchildren, Craig Gibson, Mark Gibson, Stacey DiMarco, Peter Tirrell, Chelsea Tirrell, Jeff Tirrell, Grant Tirrell and Matthew McNew; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ernestine Hinton and Janis Johnson, both of Macon, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and several brothers and sisters. Funeral services were held April 9 at the First United Methodist Church, Sturgis, with Rev. Keith Treman and Rev. Robert Keim officiating. Interment was at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Sturgis.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Borgess Medical Center Cardiac Critical Care Unit. Arrangements were by Hackman-Fogleson Funeral Home in Sturgis.
Donna T. Gilkerson
Donna T. Gilkerson, 64, of Eaton Rapids, died July 31, 2002.
She was born July 1, 1938 in South Arm Township (Charlevoix County) to Claud and Bertha (Sloop) Gilkerson. She was a school teacher for over 36 years at public schools in Springport and Eaton Rapids and spent one year teaching Navajo children in Cuba, New Mexico. She was a member of the Wesleyan Church of Eaton Rapids, a Sunday School teacher, CYC director, Sunday School superintendent and church pianist for many years. Her life was teaching and her students were her life.
She is survived by sisters, Ina Slough of East Jordan, Lena Brown of Roseville and Kay (Jim) Spence of Eaton Rapids; brothers, Claude (Jean) Gilkerson of Bellaire, William (Donna) Gilkerson of Granville, Ohio, and Dean (Marlene) Gilkerson of Fostoria; 27 nieces and nephews, 54 great-nieces and nephews and five great-great-nieces and nephews; and several close friends, including Doris Wonser with whom she shared a home, and third-grade teacher-buddies Cindy Holm and Gina Rocca.
Donna was preceded in death by her brother Wayne in 1940, her father in 1971, her mother in 1990 and her sister Ella in 1998.
Funeral services were held Aug. 3 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Pastor Frank Klassen officiating. Interment will be at Sunset Hill Cemetery, East Jordan on Monday, Aug. 5 at 1 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the North-western Elementary School nature project in Eaton Rapids.
Ivan H. Gillett
Ivan H. Gillett, 86, a resident of Sandia Park, NM since 1957, died Wednesday, July 17, 2002. Ivan was born in Eaton Rapids, MI to Herbert and Emmaline Gillett in 1915. He graduated from Eaton Rapids High School in 1933. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1935. Ivan married June Carpenter in 1936. He retired from the Navy in 1956 as a Lieutenant Commander. Ivan was employed by the Sandia National Laboratories as a Staff Associate in the Weaponry Department for 21 years, retiring in 1978.
He leaves his wife of 66 years, June; daughter, Carolyn McBane and husband, Robert, of Phoenix, AZ; daughter, Mary Scales and husband Stephen, of Colorado Springs, CO; son, John Gillett, and wife Elaine, of Estancia, NM; daughter, Kathleen Esquibel, and husband, Arthur, of Albuquerque, NM; son, Daniel Gillett, and wife Katherine of Albuquerque, NM; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; brother, Gerald Gillett, and wife Lillian, of Eaton Rapids, MI
Cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions may be made to the New Mexico Boys and Girls Ranches, Inc., PO Box 9, Belen, NM, 87002. Arrangements were by French Mortuary, Lomas Blvd. Chapel.
Robert C. Gingrich
Robert C. Gingrich, 76, of Charlotte, died Feb. 10, 2002.
Mr. Gingrich was born Nov. 20, 1925 in Chester Township, the son of Lee and Lita Marie (Bottomley) Gingrich. He was a farmer, truck driver and timber logger for Johnson’s Lumber. He is survived by his wife, Colleen (Royston) Gingrich; sons, Roger (Claudia) of New Hampshire, Larry (Vickie) and Darrel (Debbie), both of Charlotte, and Randall (Bonita) of Eaton Rapids; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; brother, John (Kay Dawn) of Charlotte; and sisters, Bonnie (Ed) Simek of Charlotte and Ellen (Wayne) Dunn of Bellevue. Memorial services were held Feb. 14 at Gresham United Methodist Church in Charlotte, with Rev. Jeffrey Bowman officiating. Memorial donations may be made to Gresham United Methodist Church.
Lt. Joy Ann Goe
An abundant source of joy was lost to us when our dear daughter, sister, mother, friend, cousin, and co-worker, Joy Ann Warriner Goe, of Eaton Rapids died on November 2, 2002, after a courageous struggle with cancer. Joy was born on April 16, 1963 and spent a lifetime delighting us with her wit, captivating us with her charm, and invigorating us with her smile. She had a rare zest for life which enriched those who came to know her. She also had a god-given gift for leadership. Her spirit will live on in our precious memories of her. Joy grew up in Lasing, attended Moores Park School, Walter French Jr. High, and graduated from Everett High School in 1981. She obtained her BA form Norfolk State University, Virginia. Joy served her country in the United State Navy for over 19 years, attaining the rank of Lieutenant and earning numerous distinctions including the Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (2 times), Navy Achievement Medal (5), good Conduct Medal (2), and the National Defense Medal (2). She was stationed all over the world, most recently in Detroit at the Naval Recruiting District, Michigan where she became a great favorite among her peers.
Joy is survived by her children, Max (14), and Michael (5); her ex-husband, Kevin Goe; her parents, Gary Warriner (Yvonne) and Janet Julian (Ernie); her brothers, Craig (Mary), Scott (Karen) and Keith (Kathy); in addition to many nephews, nieces, aunts, uncles, cousins, and loving friends, all of whom will never forget her and will se her in the hereafter.
The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, November 6th, 10:00 a.m. at St. Peter Catholic Church, Eaton Rapids, with the Rev. Bennett Constantine, officiating. The Rite of committal will follow in Deepdale Memorial Gardens, Lansing with Military services provided by the U.S. Navy. The family will receive friends at the Gorsline-Runciman Co. East Chapel, 1730 E. Grand River Ave., East Lansing Tuesday from 5-9 p.m. with the Rosary being recited at 7 p.m. Those desiring may make contributions to Hospice of Lansing, 6035 Executive Drive, Suit 103, Lansing, Michigan 48911 in memory of Joy. The family would like to thank health care workers who made Joy’s final days more peaceful and extend a very special thanks to the men and women of the Naval Recruitment District Michigan, especially Commanding Officer Jim Knapp and Executive Officer Bing Lenygel for the incredible amount of support and assistance they have provided to Joy and the family.
Walter J. Goff
Walter Jay Goff, 84, of Eaton Rapids, formerly of Assyria, died Wednesday, March 27, 2002 at his home.
Mr. Goff was born Aug. 10, 1917 in Battle Creek, the son of Rellow and Ida (Munn) Goff. He attended Springfield High School. Mr. Goff was a machine operator for 25 years at Federal Mogul, a custodian at Bellevue schools in retirement, and armed in the Bellevue area. He married Betty Ackley on July 5, 1947: she survives. They resided in Assyria for 49 years and moved to Eaton Rapids five years ago. He was a life member of VFW 2406 Dad’s Post in Charlotte and enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and yard work.
He is survived by his wife, Betty; son, Garry of Eaton Rapids; grandson, Barry (Michelle) Goff of Charlotte; great-grandchildren, Grant and Paige Goff of Charlotte; and brother, Melvin (Eleanor) Goff of Wausau, Wis.
Services were held March 30 at Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue, with Rev. Timothy Olson officiating. Interment was at Hicks Cemetery in Pennfield Township. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
