Ida P. Gross
Ida Pearl Gross, 83, of Charlotte, passed away Monday, June 17, 2002 at Ingham Medical Hospital of numerous complications incurred after a fall and broken hip late last year.
She is survive by her husband, Allen Leo; daughters, Nell Bartley of Lansing and Karen Rogers of White Lake; son, Bruce (Linda) of Charlotte; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and numerous family members, friends and loved ones.
A small, quiet private service will be held. Arrangements were by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home of Charlotte.
Susan K. Gutchess
Susan Kay (Latta) Gutchess, 53, of Clackamas, formerly of Nashville, died Monday, March 4, 2002 at her home after a long battle with cancer.
Services will be held in Nashville at a later date.
Arrangements were by Maple Valley Chapel of Nashville.
Valerie (Herm) Hackel
Valerie (Herm) Hackel, age 39, of Eaton Rapids, formerly of Saginaw, passed away Sunday, March 31, 2002 at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing after a lengthy illness. Valerie Ann Herm was born November 24, 1962 in Saginaw, the daughter of George and Sharon Herm. She graduated from Douglas MacArthur High School with the class of 1980. She then graduated from Ferris State University in 1986. Valerie enjoyed music and concerts but most of all she enjoyed time spent with her daughter Amy. They were best friends.
Surviving besides her daughter Amy are her father George C. Herm Jr. and his wife Barbara of Saginaw; one brother, Rev. Trevor Herm and his wife Carol of Burton; two nephews, Matt and Brad Herm; several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Valerie was predeceased by her mother Sharon Herm in 1985.
Funeral services will take place at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 3, 2002 at the W.L. Case and Company Funeral Chapel, 4480 Mackinaw Road, Saginaw. Rev. Scott Boles will officiate with burial in Roselawn Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at the chapel from 2-5 p.m. and from 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider the American Cancer Society.
Emma L. Halbisen
Emma L. Halbisen, 91, of Charlotte, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002 at Hospice House of Mid-Michigan in Lansing.
Mrs. Halbisen was born Feb. 7, 1910 in Ionia, the daughter of William and Harriet (Jaynes) Cassel and had been a Charlotte resident since 1938, coming from Portland, Mich. She was a retired employee of the Fisher Body Division of General Motors in Lansing and was a self-employed seamstress. Mrs. Halbisen and was a member of the Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church.
She is survived by son, Arthur (Aoy) Halbisen of Chaing Mai, Thailand, and one grandson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Halbisen on April 28, 1992.
At Mrs. Halbisen’s request, cremation has taken place. Graveside services were held Jan. 31 at Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte, with Rev. George Fleming officiating.
Memorial donations may be made to the Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church. Arrangements were by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Joyce M. Hale
Joyce May Hale, 2-½ month old daughter of Steven and Lisa (Cole) Hale of Ionia, died unexpectedly Monday morning, Sept. 2, 2002.
Joyce was born June 9, 2002 in Grand Rapids.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by three brothers, Triston, Richard and her twin, Charles; grandparents, Julie and Ken McArthur of Lake Odessa, Richard and Lilly Cole of Lansing, Richard Hale of Gladwin and Janet Niemeth of Saginaw; great-grandparents, Joyce Middaugh of Nashville, Thelma Cole of Charlotte and Lorn Hale of Gladwin; great-great-grandmother, Geraldine McIntyre of Grand Ledge; and aunts, uncles and cousins.
Graveside services were held Sept. 6 at Meadowbrook Cemetery, with Pastor Don Woolum officiating. Arrangements were by Barker-Leik Funeral Home in Mulliken.
Norton L. Hall
Norton LeRoy Hall, 90, of Lake City, passed away Monday, June 10, 2002 at his home.
Mr. Hall was born March 1, 1912 in Aetna Township, Missaukee County, to Parker and Nellie (Gordon) Hall. He married Mable Lucile Snyder in Aetna Township Oct. 21, 1940; she preceded him in death May 5, 2001. Norton and Mable lived in Lake City, Grand Rapids, Detroit and Vasser, and settled in Eaton Rapids in the early 1950’s. In 1990 they moved from Eaton Rapids to their childhood home of Lake City. Mr. Hall retired from General Motors in 1978, where he worked on the presses, and before retiring, as a sweeper operator, spending most of his time in Plant 3. He enjoyed working in his garage during his early years and later in life enjoyed reading, playing cards and doing word-find puzzles.
He is survived by his children, Edwin (Alice) Hall and Lester (Alta) Hall, both of Eaton Rapids, Bernice Paul of Lake City and Shirley (Joe) Place of Charlotte; eight grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; sister, Evelyn Boven; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 60 years, Mable; brother, Lyle; and sisters Frona Belle Coleman and Donna Mae Christie.
Funeral services were held June 13 at Aetna Christian Reformed Church, with Rev. Brad Center officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice. Arrangements were by Young Funeral Home in Lake City.
Arlo E. Hammond
Arlo E. Hammond, 84, twin brother of Arland Hammond, passed away Dec. 20, 2001 in Plano, Texas.
Mr. Hammond was born Dec. 22, 1916 in Eaton County and was raised in Charlotte. He became an Eagle Scout in Troop 45 in 1933, and graduated from Charlotte High School in 1935. On July 2, 1937, he married Ann Colizzi; in 1941 they moved to Jackson. Mr. Hammond helped with Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts for quite a few years and was also very active in Junior Achievement and various other clubs, including The Loyal Order of Moose in Jackson and the Michigan Retail Hardware Association. His family were members of Calvary United Methodist Church in Jackson. Mr. Hammond and chief inspector of Hancock Manufacturing Co. until he and his wife became owners of Hammond Hardware (formerly Burch Hardware) in 1956. They sold the hardware business to sons John and James before retiring to North Fort Myers, Fla., as full-time residents in 1986. Arlo and Ann were members of Grace United Methodist Church of Cape Coral until moving to Plano, Texas in February 2000.
He is survived by his wife, Ann of Plano, Texas; five children, Mary Rude of Plano, Texas, Kathryn (Michael) of Decatur, John (Susanne), James (Nancy) of Jackson and David of Plano, Texas; 14 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; two brother, Arland (Edna) of Charlotte; two nieces and one nephew and their families; and two special cousins.
He was preceded in death by granddaughter Pamela Sue Rude, and parents Alvah and Violet (Terrill) Hammond.

Dennis J. Hammond
Dennis James Hammond, 37, of Lansing, formerly of Charlotte, died Tuesday, July 23, 2002 in Lansing.
Mr. Hammond was born July 19, 1965 in Charlotte, the son of Archie and Lillie May (Reiner) Hammond and had been a Lansing resident since 1996 coming from Jackson, and prior to that, Charlotte. While in Charlotte he had been employed for a short time at Peckham Industries and attended the Eaton Intermediate Schools. He had also attended the Beekman Center in Lansing. He was an avid Lansing Lugnuts baseball fan, attending most of their home games, and enjoyed playing video games.
He is survived by his father, Archie (Julie) Hammond of Mason; three sisters, Diane Wilson of Lansing, Dawn (Shawn) Jenks of Haslett and Dolly Hammond of Joplin, Mo.; one brother, David Hammond of Wyoming; two nieces, Sage Wilson and Katie Hathcox; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Lillie May (Reiner) Hammond on Sept. 24, 1986.
Funeral services were held July 27 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel in Charlotte, with Rev. Wilfred Baker officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte.
Marieta Kaye Hammond
Marieta Kaye Hammond, age 64 of Eaton Rapids, passed away to be with the Lord and those who preceded her in death on January 23, 2002. She was born on April 1, 1937 and married Willard Hammond on April 23, 1970. Marieta found great pleasure in her grand children, the neighbor children and all of her friends and family. She enjoyed reading, crosswords, signing and had a great appreciation of life.
Surviving are her daughter, Kristina Kaye Hammond-Walker; stepdaughters Geneva Tymow, Doxie Hammond and Wiladene Tidwell; stepsons, William Hammond and Jerry Hammond; sisters, Naida Pelton and Mary Bailey; brothers, Forrest Jackson and Larry Jackson and many grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held at Skinner Funeral Home on January 28, 2002. Marieta Kaye Hammond will be greatly missed.
