Hazel C. Nelson
Hazel Christine (Eriksen) Nelson, 93, died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002.
Mrs. Nelson was born Jan. 3, 1908 in Greenville, the daughter of Erik and Ella (Hansen) Eriksen. She attended Greenville High School and Ferris Institute. She married Marvin Nelson on June 25, 1929 and celebrated 71 years of marriage before his death on June 2, 2001. They made their home in Stanton, where Marvin was county abstractor until 1947 when they moved to Charlotte. Their last years together were at Independence Village in Grand Ledge. Mr. and Mrs. Nelson were charter members of Peace Lutheran Church in Charlotte, and Mrs. Nelson enjoyed the Isabelle Circle. She was well-known for her beautiful handiwork. She was a life member of the Eastern Star and belonged to the Pythian Sisters, organization and Charlotte Women’s Club.
She is survived by a daughter, Jeanette (Fred) Kogge of Hastings; son, Roger (Jane) Nelson of Duck Lake; grandchildren, Steven (Sumire) Kogge, Scott (Rose) Kogge, Sandra (Gary) Ragan, Stuart (Kathie) Kogge, Judy (Matthew) Wineinger, Robin Nelson and Michael (Kathleen) Nelson; step-grandchildren, Sarah and Sam Kellogg, Andrea and Derek King; and eight great-grandchildren; sister, Erma Sheaha of Santa Barbara, Calif.; sister-in-law, Evelyn Strobridge of Greenville and Frances Eriksen of Grand Rapids.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin, and a brother, Lester in 1964.
Funeral services were held Jan. 4 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Rev. Noel Hall-Niemann officiating. Interment was at South Sidney Cemetery, Montcalm County.
Memorial donations may be made to Peace Lutheran Church of Hayes Green Beach Memorial Hospital. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home, Inc., Charlotte.
Michael Nemeth
Michael Nemeth, 88, of Lansing, formerly of Charlotte, died Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2002.
Mr. Nemeth was born Feb. 10, 1914, in Mishawaka, Ind., the son of Francis and Theresia (Horvath) Nemeth. He was a farmer.
He is survived by sisters, Helen (Albert) Vanacker and Mary Nemeth, both of Lansing.
He was preceded in death by sister, Theresa Goodrich; brother, Frank Nemeth; and twins, John and Mary Nemeth.
Funeral mass was held Nov. 22 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Charlotte, with Rev. Father Denis Spitzley officiating. Interment was at Gresham Cemetery in Charlotte.
Memorial contributions may be made to Ingham Medical Visiting Nurses or Heartland Hospice.
Leonard J. Newcomb
Staff Sgt. Leonard James Newcomb, 48, passed away Friday, April 5, 2002.
Mr. Newcomb was born June 12, 1953 in Sault Ste. Marie. He retired from the U.S. Army after 21 years of service and spent his time after that driving semi trucks. He was an avid hunter and loved spending time with his family.
He is survived by three children, Michael Newcomb of Port Huron, and Angel Newcomb and Tiffany Lamb, both of Potterville; five grandchildren, Kimmy, Kyle, Michael Jr., Shelby and Kyrsten; 11 brothers and sisters, Frieda, Fred, Bob, Barbara, Donald, Joe, Mark, Mary, Francis, Michael and Andy.
He was preceded in death by his father, Ira Newcomb, and mother, Martha Newcomb.
Services were held April 9 at the Gorsline-Runciman DeWitt Chapel.
Mae E. Nichols
Mae Edna Nichols, 86, of Springport, formerly of Lansing and Potterville died Tuesday, May 21, 2002.
Mrs. Nichols was born May 11, 1916 in Mecosta, the daughter of John Roy and Grace (Thorne) Hart. She was head of the hot lunch program at Potterville Schools, taught Vacation Bible School and was a member of Oneida Gospel Church.
She is survived by sons, Donald Gilman of Springport and Douglas Gilman of St. Petersburg, Fla.; stepson, Dick Nichols of Minnesota; eight grandchildren; and a sister, Ruth Oberlin of Lansing.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lee Nichols in 1996.
Funeral services were held May 24 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Rev. Larry Schrauger officiating. Interment was at Deepdale Memorial Gardens in Lansing.
Memorial contributions may be made to Oneida Gospel Church or Hospice of Jackson.
Andrew S. Nicolaou
Andrew S. Nicolaou, 87, of Charlotte, died Monday, June 3, 2002 at Eaton County Medical Care Facility.
Mr. Nicolaou was born Feb. 27, 1915 in Palekythro, Cyprus, the son of Savva and Eleni Nicolaou, and had been a Charlotte resident since 1950. He was married to Enola Adams Jan. 26, 1944. He was a retired restaurateur, having owned and operated Andy’s Charlotte Café from 1950 to 1961, and Andy’s Restaurant on Lansing Road from 1961 to 1977. Mr. Nicolaou served in the U.S. Army’s 102nd Infantry during Word War II, receiving the Bronze Star in the Battle of the Bulge. He had attended Central Michigan University, was a member of Charlotte Lodge #120 F.&A.M., had been a member of the Knights Templar, Maple City Post #2406 VFW and the Charlotte Rotary Club. He was a member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Lansing and AHEPA Greek fraternal organization.
He is survived by his wife, Enola (Adams); four children, Peter (Anne) of El Paso, Texas, Gregory (Diane) of Cedar, Eleni Nicolaou-Sparks of Charlotte and A. Phillip (Elizabeth) of Orinda, Calif.; 10 grandchildren, Andrew and Michael Nicolaou, Elitza Nicolaou, Schad Sparks, Mari Calton, Matthew, Alex and Claire Nicolaou, Amy Campbell and Steven Powell; and three great-grandchildren, Kirsten and Noah Campbell and Isabelle Calton.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.
The Trisagion was held June 6 and was followed by funeral services at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Lansing.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross or Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. Arrangements were by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home of Charlotte.
Eleni Nicolaou-Sparks
Eleni Nicolaou-Sparks, 50, of Charlotte, died Sept. 16, 2002 at her home.
Eleni was born April 8, 1952 in Charlotte, the daughter of Andy and Enola Nicolaou, and was a resident of Charlotte her entire life. She was a mainstay at Carl V. Reck Jewelers on Main Street for the past 28 years. Eleni loved her community and was an active and visible part of it every day. She was a 1970 graduate of Charlotte High School, a past officer of the Optimist Club, active in the Alter Guild, a lay reader, and a member of the Episcopal Church Women at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Charlotte. She was also very involved in a number of capacities for the Chamber of Commerce, and was the first woman to receive the Outstanding Young Person of the Year Award by the Charlotte Jaycees.
She is survived by her mother, Enola (Adams) Nicolaou; faithful companion, Darryl Hale of Vermontville; two children, Schad Sparks and Mari (Tom) Calton, both of Charlotte; one grandchild, Isabelle Shea Calton; three brothers, Peter (Anne) Nicolaou of El Paso, Texas, Gregory (Diane) Nicolaou of Cedar and Phillip (Elizabeth) Nicolaou of Orinda, Calif.; and 10 nephews and nieces, Andrew and Tonya Nicolaou, Michael and Emily Nicolaou of San Antonia, Texas, Elitza Nicolaou, Amy Campbell and Steven Powell, Matthew, Alex and Claire Nicolaou.
She was preceded in death by her father, Andrew S. Nicolaou.
Funeral services were held Sept. 19 at First Congregational Church in Charlotte, with Rev. Dr. Carol Spangenberg of St. John’s Episcopal Church officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Charlotte Optimist Club, St. John’s Episcopal Church or Charlotte High School Band Boosters. Arrangements were by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte.
Herman H. Nieters
Herman Henry Nieters, 90, of Dimondale, died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002.
Mr. Nieters was born Nov. 8, 1911 in Rockville, Minn., the son of Bernard Nieters and Mary (Jaskin) Nieters. He worked as a machinist for Olofsson Specialty Products in Lansing until retirement.
He is survived by daughters, Kathleen (Jerry) Beasley of Dimondale and Linda Martinez of Charlotte; grandchildren, Jeffrey Beasley, Rebecca Briggs, Bernard Andrews, Anthony, Stephen, Kenneth and Rhonda Martinez; six great-grandchildren; brothers, Allie Nieters of Minnesota and Ted (Angie) Nieters of Colorado; and sister, Margaret Thole of Ionia.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Caroline in 1987.
Funeral services were held Oct. 2 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Charlotte, with Rev. Father Denis Spitzley officiating. Interment was at Windsor Township Cemetery in Dimondale.
Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte.
Beverly Nighbert
Beverly Olive Nighbert, 61, of Charlotte died June 25 in Battle Creek. She was born July 11, 1940 in Limestone, the daughter of Roy and Pearl (Roy) Johnson.
She had been employed for many years at Eaton Manor as a nurse’s aid. She loved to sew, tend her flowers and to help anyone who needed her help.
She is survived by sons Randy Pelto of Vermontville and Ron Winters of Scandia, daughter Sue (William) Vance of Bellevue, grandchildren Tabitha and Billi Jean Vance , and Ramsey Winters, mother Pearl Tweedale of Chatham, brother Ron Johnson of Lansing, sisters Loretta Peterson of Marquette, Sandy Laukkanen of Chatham and Norma Larson of Negaunee, and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held June 28 at the Free Methodist Church in Charlotte with the Rev. Paul Davis officiating.
Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.
