Emma Adelia Anderson

Emma Adelia Anderson, age 89 of Springport, died Thursday, March 29, 2001 in Charlotte. She was born March 28, 1912 in Hamlin Township, the daughter of Robert and Cora (Fowler) Cockroft. Mrs. Anderson was a telephone operator for the Springport Telephone Company and formerly worked for Hoag Book Binding in Springport. She was a former member of the Griffith United Methodist Church. Preceding her in death were her husband Alvin; son, Richard; and two grandsons, Richard Lee (Ricky) and John Eric.

Surviving are 2 daughters, Virginia (George) Schmidt of Springport and Nancy (Calvin) Helzerman of Barryton; daughter-in-law, Greta Anderson of Battle Creek; 9 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers, Ivan (Ruth) Cockroft of Springport and L.J. Cockroft of Cleveland, OH; numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Monday, April 2, 2001 from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with Rev. David Litchfield of the Springport United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial followed in the Springport Cemetery in Springport. Memorial gifts can be made to the Springport United Methodist Church.

Leta A. Andrews

Leta A. Andrews, 82, of Charlotte, died Friday, March 2, 2001, at the Tendercare West Nursing Home in Lansing after an extended illness.

Mrs. Andrews was born Oct. 29, 1918, in Albion, the daughter of Harold and Mayta (Seifert) Wixson, and had been a Charlotte resident since coming from Marshall in 1946. She was the retired owner/operator of the Yarn Shop and was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, both in Charlotte. She had been a member of the American Legion and the Shrimp Boat Museum Club, both in Texas, and a member of the Horizon Club in Charlotte.

She is survived by a daughter, Alice “Terri” Boyd of Dimondale; three sons, Michael (Lois) Flynn of Charlotte, Vernerd “Bill” (Pat) Andrews of Dimondale, and Donald (Natalie) Andrews of Charlotte; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; brother, Irwin “Bud” Wixson of Albion; and two sisters, Thelma Gibbs of Charlotte and Ferna Weir of Killeen, Texas.

She was preceded in death by husbands, James Flynn in 1945 and Vernerd Andrews in 1980; sister, Joanne (Kenneth) Broxholm; and brothers, Ed and Charles Wixson.

Mass of the Christian Burial was held March 6 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Charlotte, with Rev. Fr. Denis R. Spitzley officiating. Interment was at Bosworth Cemetery, Olivet.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Jean L. Anciola

Jean L. Anciola, age 73 of Eaton Rapids, died Friday, September 28, 2001 in Lansing. Jean was born November 5, 1927 in Lansing, the daughter of Harold Alexander and Wilma Fern (Herrick) Kowalk. She was employed as a cook at the St. Lawrence Dimondale Center for many years. Mrs. Anciola was preceded in death by her husband, Rosendo Alvino Anciola; 2 sisters, Joan Traylor, Jerrene Tripp; and 3 brothers, Dale, Russell and Gaylord Kowalk.

Surviving are her 8 children, Kenneth (Dorothea) Kowalk, Gretchen (Roy) Kunkel, Brian (Kris) Miller, James (Carolyn) Miller all of Eaton Rapids, Deborah (Craig) McDermott of Charlotte, Kurt Miller of Springport, Barrie (Stan) Latoski of Eaton Rapids, Yolanda Anciola of Springport; 21 grandchildren; sister, Jeannette Merwin of Leslie and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Monday, October 1, 2001, at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids, with Pastor Stephen Klink officiating.

David N. Ashley

David N. Ashley, 71, of Battle Creek, died Oct. 12, 2001 at his home.

Mr. Ashley was born Sept. 6, 1930 in Eaton Rapids, the son of Wilson and Minnie Ashley. He worked as a waste treatment officer at Corning Glass Works in Albion, and in maintenance for the Battle Creek Public Schools. He retired in 1993. Mr. Ashley married Alice Irene Biggs on Aug. 30, 1952. He served as union steward at Battle Creek Public Schools, and enjoyed spending time with his family, as well as woodworking.

He is survived by his wife, Alice; daughters, Penny Lambka of Springport and Debra Pena of Bishop, Texas; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and a brother, Carl Ashley of Lansing.

He was preceded in death by one sister and five brothers.

Services were held Oct. 18 at the Olivet Assembly of God, with Rev. Doug Hammond officiating.

Memorial donations may be made to the Olivet Assembly of God. Arrangements were by Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue.

William W. Babcock

William Wallace Babcock, 75, of Battle Creek, died March 8, 2001 at Battle Creek Health System-Select Specialty Hospital.

Mr. Babcock was born May 6, 1925, in Bellevue, the son of Wallace and Clara (Vahs) Babcock. He graduated from Bellevue High School, and worked for General Foods, Post Division, for 38 years. He was a member of BPOE #131, and he loved music and animals.

He is survived by his sister, Dora (Fred) Nelson of Grand Rapids; sister-in-law, Lucille Babcock of Florida; many nieces and nephews; and special friend, Margaret Hastings of Battle Creek. He was preceded in death by brothers, Christian and Walter Babcock, and sisters, Rhonda Colton and Beulah Lind.

Services were held March 12 at Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue, with Pastor Mark Thompson officiating. Interment was at Riverside Cemetery, Bellevue.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Milton H. Backofen

Milton H. Backofen, 78, of South Haven, formerly of Charlotte, died Wednesday, May 23, 2001 at the Lee Memorial Hospital in Ft. Myers, Florida, after a short illness.

Mr. Backofen was born in Eaton Rapids, the son of Royal and Fannie (Harris) Backofen, and lived most of his life in Eaton County before moving to Bloomingdale and then South Haven. He had worked as a self-employed machinist, and later worked for the Aluminum Extrusions Company in Charlotte. He attended school in Olivet and Charlotte, and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member and past patron of the Charlotte OES, was a past master of the Charlotte Lodge #120 F. & A.M., was commander of the Charlotte Commandery, a past president of the Eaton County Shrine Club, and past president and long-time secretary of the Charlotte Lions Club.

He is survived by his wife, Ellen (Farlin) Backofen; three daughters, Judy Ellen (Charles) Ball of Allegan, Linda Sue (Allen) Crawford of South Haven, and Nancy Jo (Kenneth) Lynam of Dunedin, Fla.; and six grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are pending and will be announced later by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home of Charlotte.

Myrna M. Baddeley

Myrna M. Baddeley, 85, of Bellevue, died July 30, 20001 at Battle Creek Health System.

Mrs. Baddeley was born March 4, 1916, the daughter of Alva and Marietta (Dibble) Kinsey. She graduated from Bellevue High School and worked as a waitress at the Post Tavern Inn for 20 years. She married Clayton “Smokey” Baddeley of Oct. 7, 1947 at the First Congregational Church in Battle Creek; he died Dec. 31, 1993. Mrs. Baddeley was a member of OES and enjoyed traveling.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, brother Willis Kinsey, and sister Fern Smith.

Services were held Aug. 2 at Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue, with Pastor Stephen Covert officiating. Interment was at Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association. Arrangements were by Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue.

Harold Bailey

Harold “Pete” Bailey, 69, of Bellevue, died Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2001 at the Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo.

Mr. Bailey was born Aug. 28, 1932 in Walton Township, Eaton County, the son of Harold and Harriet (Bush) Bailey, and was raised by his grandmother and step-grandfather. He was a lifelong Bellevue area resident. Mr. Bailey was a U.S. Army veteran and had been employed as a machinist by the Grand Trunk Railroad, from where he retired in 1985 after 17 years of service. He was married to his first wife, Vivian Ormsbee in 1952.

He is survived by his wife, Coral Bailey; three sons, Harold “Ike” (Odie) Bailey of Battle Creek, Gary (Diane) Bailey and Joe (Linda) Bailey, both of Bellevue; four step-daughters, Judy Jarman of Nashville, Janet Abbott of Bellevue, Leslea Boyd of Marshall and Connie Underwood of Battle Creek; nine grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren, and four step-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Frank and Buddy Bailey, both of Battle Creek; and a sister, Joan Hensley of Battle Creek.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Loren Bailey; and a sister, Vonnie Kimbel.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial gathering will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 4 at the Bellevue Conservation Club.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bellevue Fire Department for a thermal imaging camera. Arrangements were by Burkhead-Greene Funeral Home, Charlotte.
