Marianna Baker

Marianna (Nulf) Baker, 79, of Olivet, died Tuesday, June 12, 2001 at the home of her daughter in Vermontville after an extended illness. Mrs. Baker was born Nov. 28, 1921 in Geraldine, Mont., the daughter of Grover and Ethel (Kistler) Nulf, and was a lifelong Olivet-area resident. She had been employed by the former Wilcox-Gay/Recordio Corporation in Charlotte, and was a cook at the former Olivet Truck Stop Restaurant. She was married to Roger Baker on Nov. 10, 1945; he preceded her in death Dec. 2, 1983. She is survived by one daughter, Barbara (Robert) Dickinson of Vermontville; one son, Dan “Dick” (Kathy) Baker of Grayling; 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roger; two sons, Donovan “Butch” Hotchkiss on May 18, 1972 and David Baker on March 5, 2001; sister, Delpha Anderson; and three brothers, Grover “Bud” Nulf Jr., Kenneth Nulf and Ray Nulf. Funeral services were held June 16 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel, Charlotte, with Rev. Daniel Smith officiating. Interment was at Bosworth Cemetery, Olivet. Memorial contributions may be made to the Barry-Eaton Health Department Hospice. Arrangements were by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte.

Gerald E. Bandfield

Gerald E. “Jerry” Bandfield, 73, of Nashville, died Sunday, April 22, 2001 in Dothan, Alabama.

Mr. Bandfield was born Aug. 31, 1927 in Detroit, the son of John and Mary (Battle) Bandfield. He was raised in the Charlotte area, and attended area schools, graduating from Nashville schools. He served in the U.S. Navy from April 1945 to May 1948 and married Ethel VanGoethem in Charlotte in 1949. Mr. Bandfield was employed at Maple Valley High School as a custodian for 17 years, and owned and operated Jerry’s Tavern in Nashville for six years. He also served on the Nashville Fire Department in the 1960’s. He was a member of the Nashville VFW, serving as senior vice. He wintered in Bushnell, Florida, enjoying small engine and lawn mower repair, and watching sports.

He is survived by his wife, Ethel of Nashville; son, Jeffery (fiancé, Gwen Boone) of Lansing; brothers, John (Carole) of Charlotte, Bill (Joan) of Vanderbilt, Bob (Phyllis) of Howell, and Sam (Ruth) of Six Lakes; sister, John Walker of Florida; sister-in-law, Joan (Dale) Pratt; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son, James.

Services were held April 27 at The Maple Valley Chapel, with Rev. Ward Pierce officiating. Interment was at West Carmel Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Putnam Library or Maple Valley Scholarship Fund. Arrangement s by Maple Valley Chapel.

John E. Bandfield

John “Jack” Edwin Bandfield, 76, passed away Tuesday, May 29, 2001.

Mr. Bandfield was born Aug. 14, 1924 in Detroit, the son of John Wesley and Mary (Battles) Bandfield. He was the manager of Eaton Theatre for 30 years, and a school bus driver for 13 years. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in both the Navy and Marine Corps.

He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Carole; two step-sons, Steve and Don Shults; four children, Corien (Charles) White, Jackie (Alan) Sinclair, Linda Bandfield and Mary Bandfield; nine grandchildren; brothers, Robert Bandfield of Howell, Sam Bandfield of Six Lakes and William Bandfield of Vanderbuilt; and a sister, Joane of Florida.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Gerald Bandfield. Funeral services were held June 1 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Father Denis Spitzley officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Diabetes Foundation. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.

Lillian Elaine Barlow

Lillian Elaine Barlow, age 57 of Eaton Rapids, died Wednesday, October 10, 2001 in Eaton Rapids. Lillian Elaine was born February 23, 1944 in War, West Virginia, the daughter of Harry Lee and Ruth Lucile (West) Barlow. She was formerly employed at Eaton Stamping and was currently a receptionist at the Eaton Rapids Medical Center.

Surviving are her daughter, Penny Lee Unger-McMaster of Potterville; son, Richard Dale Medcoff of Eaton Rapids; 2 grandchildren Daryle and Crystal McMaster; 1 great-granddaughter, Valerie McMaster; close and special friend, Wilbur O. Robertson of Eaton Rapids; 2 brothers, Daniel and Donald Seigo; 6 sisters, Cora King, Harriett Dash, Connie Vilk, Debra Love, Denise Branch, Teresa Forbush; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, October 14, 2001 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids with Rev. Scott Boles of the Eaton Rapids First Baptist Church officiating. Those desiring may make contributions to the First Baptist Church in memory of Lillian Elaine Barlow.

Maria Barrera

Maria DeLos Reyes Tirado Barrera, 91, of Charlotte died Sunday, April 29, 2001.

Mrs. Barrera was born Nov. 10, 1909 in Escacena Del Campo, Spain, the daughter of Manuel Tirado Pichardo and Mercedes Barrera Pichardo.

She is survived by daughter, Ana Maria (Bernard) Stambaugh; two grandsons, Bernard Russell Stambaugh, Joseph Anthony Stambaugh; two great-grandchildren, Meggin and Anthony Stambaugh; two nieces and one nephew in Spain.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Ana, and a brother, Antonio.

Funeral mass was held May 1 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Charlotte, with Rev. Father Denis Spitzley officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Eaton Community Hospice or St. Mary Catholic Church. Arrangements by Pray Funeral Home, Inc.

Ronald D. Barrett

Ronald D. Barrett, 60, of Potterville, died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001 at Sparrow Hospital, Lansing, after a long illness.

Mr. Barrett was born Feb. 14, 1941 in Vermontville, the son of Russell “Red” and Agnes (Palik) Barrett and was a lifelong area resident. He was a long-time employee of Fowlers/Team One Chevrolet & Oldsmobile in Charlotte.

He is survived by two daughters, Tracey (Derrick) Lashley of Charlotte and Marcey (fiancé, Ronnie Burton) Barrett of Georgetown, Ky; six grandchildren, Kailie, Lindsey, Britney, Briana, Joanna and Tyler; one sister, Shirlee Kobiska of Holt; two nieces and two nephews; and numerous special friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 13 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel, Charlotte.

Arrangements were by Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel, Charlotte.

Edwin L. Bassett

Edwin L. Bassett, 79, of Pennfield Township, died Aug. 2, 2001 at Battle Creek Health System.

Mr. Bassett was born June 8, 1922 to Leroy and Rhoda (Karcher) Bassett in Freeport. He worked as a pressman at General Motors in Lansing, and Eaton Manufacturing in Battle Creek, as a tree trimmer for the city of Battle Creek, and for Consumer’s Energy. He married Phyllis Face in 1945; she survives. Mr. Bassett was a member of the VFW in Nashville and a life member of the Disabled American Veterans. He enjoyed fishing, car racing, motorcycles, horse racing and the dog races.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis; brother, Donald Bassett of Bellevue; seven nieces and nine nephews.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Keith and Richard Bassett.

Private graveside services were held at Hillside Cemetery, Kalamo.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association. Arrangements were by Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue.

Doris M. O’Hearn Bates

Doris May O’Hearn Bates, 80, of Torch Lake, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001.

She was born March 4, 1921 in Watertown, N.Y.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Olive (Benson) O’Hearn, and her younger brother, Frank William Jr. (Sonny), who died in World War II.

Doris’ life experiences exemplified her generation. A child of the depression, she worked in defense industries during World War II. She met her husband William while he was stationed at the Naval Hospital at the Brooklyn Naval Shipyard in New York. After the war, William and Doris chose a naval career. They retired to Torch Lake in 1969.

Doris was a lifetime member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, William Bates; her daughter Patricia (Paul) Roush of Charlotte; her grandson Wade Roush and his partner Kevin Park of San Francisco; and her grandson Jamie Roush and his wife Jen Athey of Fairbanks, Alaska.

A graveside service will be held Sunday, May 26, 2002, at 1 p.m. at Lakeview Cemetery in Torch Lake Township.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Central Lake Township Library, P.O. Box 397, Central Lake, MI 49622, or to the Leukemia Society of America, Michigan Chapter, 21617 Harper Avenue, St. Clair Shores, MI 48080-2254.

Arrangements were made by the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.
