Robert J. Bryan

Robert John Bryan, 83, of Dimondale, formerly of Mecosta, passed away with his family by his side on Feb. 21, 2001.

Mr. Bryan was born Aug. 2, 1917, to Howard and Ethel Bryan in Charlotte. After 35 years of service at Oldsmobile, Bob and Eleanor retired to Pretty Lake where he enjoyed their lakefront property. He loved to share his home with frequent family gatherings that included pontoon rides, fishing, bonfires, and teaching his grandchildren to swim. Winter weather would be enjoyed by snowmobiling and ice fishing. Bob was also an avid hunter and looked forward to deep camp every year.

He is survived by his daughter, Patricia (Ronald) Norman of Potterville; grandchildren, KaSandra DeFeyter, Kate and Todd Stanton; Laura Norman and Jack Norman; great-grandchildren Jacob DeFeyter, Tabitha, Samantha and Zane Stanton; brother and sister, Dale (Jean) Bryan of Seattle, Wash., and Martha Gates of Bellevue; several nieces and nephews; and special friend, Angie Joseph.

He was preceded in death by wife, Delores Rose Bryan in 1967; daughter, Judy Rose Medlock; and wife, Eleanor Bryan in 1998. Services were held Feb. 24 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.

Memorial donations may be made to Ingham Hospice and Home Care Services.

Shirley O. Bryan

Shirley O. Bryan, 88, of Haslett, formerly of Hastings, died Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001 at Granny’s Pad in Haslett.

Mrs. Bryan was born in Detroit on July 21, 1913, the daughter of Frederick and Geraldine (Sheldon) Crittenden. She was raised in Detroit, Saline and Olivet, graduating from Olivet High School in 1931. She married Dan Bryan on June 17, 1932. She moved to Hastings in 1960, from Allegan, and had previously lived in Boyne City and Charlotte. Mrs. Bryan worked as a bookkeeper for several businesses during her working life. She moved from Hastings to Haslett in 1999.

She is survived by daughter, Danya (Douglas) Liverance of Williamston; grandsons, Shawn (Laura) Liverance of Walker; great-grandchildren, Krista, Justyne, Cody and Hailey; and a sister, Desolyn Ross of Hastings.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dan Bryan on March 10, 1999; and a brother, Gerald Crittenden.

Funeral services were held Sept. 8 at Wren Funeral Home, Hastings, with Rev. Kathy Brown officiating. Interment was at Riverside Cemetery, Hastings.

Memorial contributions may be made to Granny’s Pad Adult Foster Care, 2077 Haslett Road, Haslett, MI 48840. Arrangements were by Wren Funeral Home, Hastings.

Marlene Joyce Buck

Marlene Joyce Buck, age 67 of Eaton Rapids, died Monday, May 28, 2001 at her residence. She was born February 9, 1934 in Onondaga Township, daughter of John and Millie (Steele) McKessy. Marlene was an Eaton Rapids High School graduate, class of 1952. She was formerly employed at Eaton Stamping and later for Quality Dairy both in Eaton Rapids. Preceding her in death was her husband, John Buck, in 1978 and a sister, Margaret Swan.

Surviving are her daughter, Linda (Roger) McNutt of Eaton Rapids; 2 grandchildren, Kevin McNutt of Eaton Rapids and Scott (Sharon) Decess of Seattle, WA; great-grandchild Nicole Decess of Seattle; 6 brothers and sisters, Maxine Mentink of Grand Rapids, Maynard (Sylvia) McKessy of Eaton Rapids, Maurice McKessy of Onondaga, Marvin McKessy of Jackson, Mona (Ron) Bayes of Eaton Rapids, and Myrna (Art) Anderson of Eaton Rapids; brother-in-law, Lawton Swan of Eaton Rapids and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 30th at 1:00 p.m. from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with Rev. Tom Evans of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Rosehill Cemetery in Eaton Rapids. Pallbearers will be Scott Decess, Kevin McNutt, Art Anderson, Ron Bayes, Dennis Swan and Rick Wilbur.

June M. Buffenbarger

June Marie Buffenbarger, of Sagola, formerly of Charlotte, died Monday, Oct. 22, 2001 at her home.

Mrs. Buffenbarger was born May 2, 1927, the daughter of Arlo and May (Jones) Shumaker in Charlotte. She graduated from Charlotte High School in 1944, and married Frank “Budd” Buffenbarger on June 8, 1945. She and her husband owned and operated Buffenbarger Plumbing and Heating in Charlotte for 28 years, then moving to Crystal Falls, where they continued the business for 11 more years. Upon retirement, they moved west to Sagola, where they reside. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt. She enjoyed fishing, traveling, visiting and corresponding with family and friends, and gardening (both flowers and vegetables). She liked cooking and baking, and was active in Grace Presbyterian Church of Sagola.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Budd; a daughter, Cherry Buffenbarger of Menominee; son, Kent Buffenbarger of Charlotte; two granddaughters, Rachel and Jessica Buffenbarger; and one great-granddaughter, Lauren Ostertag of Grand Ledge.

She was preceded in death by her mother, father, and a brother, Donald Shumaker.

Funeral services were held Oct. 26 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or Marquette General Home Health and Hospice. Arrangements were by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte.

Lydia C. Burchett

Lydia C. Burchett, 97, of Nashville, died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001 at Thornapple Manor.

Mrs. Burchett was born Feb. 6, 1904 in Nashville, the daughter of William and Eva (Robart) Guy. She was raised in the Nashville/Dowling area and attended area schools. She graduated from Nashville School and continued her education at Barry County Normal, where she prepared for a career as a country school teacher. She married Howard Burchett in 1927 at her parents home in Nashville; he preceded her in death after 72 years of marriage. Mrs. Burchett received a bachelor’s degree in education from Western Michigan University in 1964. She loved being a teacher and retired after 23 years as a country school teacher in several Barry County country schools and Delton Kellogg Elementary. She loved to fish, and enjoyed camping, singing and crocheting. She was a member of the Barry County Teachers Association, the Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel, Vision Impaired People, and the Farm Bureau.

She is survived by sons, Jack (Hope) Burchett of Dowling, James schools and Delton Kellogg Elementary. She loved to fish, and enjoyed camping, singing and crocheting. She was a member of the Barry County Teachers Association, the Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel, Vision Impaired People, and the Farm Bureau.

She is survived by sons, Jack (Hope) Burchett of Dowling, James (Joyce) Burchett of Edmore and Richard (Mary) Burchett of Grand Rapids; daughters, Betty (Malcolm) Young of Augusta, Marguerite (Owen) Sult of Dowling and Barbara (L.D.) Becker of Battle Creek; 21 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, Howard; three brothers, Jessie, Byron and Howard; and son-in-law, Elton Norris.

Services were held Dec. 12 at Nashville Baptist Church, with Rev. Lester DeGroot officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements were by Maple Valley Chapel, Nashville.

Holland H. Burkett

Holland Herbert Burkett, 92, of Bellevue, died Friday, Nov. 30, 2001 in Hastings.

Mr. Burkett was born May 4, 1909 in Eaton County, the son of Claude and Florence (Griffith) Burkett. He was an avid fisherman, loved fishing with his son-in-law and friends, and tinkering in the garage. He always had gum for everyone.

He is survived by his wife, Isabelle; daughters, Flora Cousins of Bellevue and Rachel (James) Clark of Lake Odessa; 15 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; and a brother, Robert (Fern) Burkett.

Funeral services were held Dec. 3 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Rev. Lester DeGroot officiating. Interment was at Hillside Cemetery, Kalamo Township.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home, Inc., Charlotte.

Robert C. Burkett

Robert Charles Burkett, 74, of Bellevue, died Dec. 16, 2001 at home.

Mr. Burkett was born Oct. 24, 1927, the son of Claude and Florence (Griffith) Burkett in Kalamo Township. He graduated from Bellevue High School in 1945, farmed all his life, and was the owner/operator of Burkett Excavating for over 35 years. He married Fern Berry on Sept. 3, 1949. Mr. Burkett was on the Kalamo Township Board of Review for 30 years, a 4-H leader and on the Eaton County 4-H Council. He enjoyed hunting, camping and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Fern (Berry) Burkett; daughters, Helen (Gary) Vedder of Charlotte, Sally (David) Bivens and Mary (Jeff) McKillop, both of Bellevue; sons, Glen (Elberta), Kenneth (Debby) and David (Barbara), all of Bellevue; and 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Holland and Gaylord; sisters, Margaret Augustine and Kathryn Stamm; and a great-grandchild, Even Burkett.

Funeral services were held Dec. 19 at Bellevue United Methodist Church, with Pastor Jeff Homan of Heritage Hills Bible Church officiating. Interment was at Hillside Cemetery, Kalamo Township.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bellevue Fire Department, the Bellevue Memorial Scholarship Fund or the charity of one’s choice. Arrangements were by Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue.

Susan Jewel Burns

Susan J. Burns (Anderson), age 44 of Eaton Rapids, passed away Friday, December 28, 2001 after a 4 year battle with Cardio-Myopathy. She was born June 17, 1957 in Eaton Rapids the daughter of Earl and Jewelene Anderson. She graduated from Eaton Rapids High School, class of 1976 and later from Ross Medical Center with a certificate in Phlebotomy, and was a former Valley Residential Group Home Worker. Preceding her in death were her father, Earl; grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. Elliott Risner and Mr. & Mrs. Clarence Anderson.

Surviving are a daughter, Jennifer Burns; mother, Jewelene Anderson; 2 brothers, Don (Debra) Anderson of Eaton Rapids and Dave (Paige) Anderson of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; 3 nieces, Amy (Bob) Wojcik of Jacksonville, FL, Mechelle (Rich) Montgomery of Myrtle Beach, S.C. and Cathy Anderson of Eaton Rapids, several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services were held Monday, December 31st from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with Rev. Mark Eckert of the Calvary Lutheran Church in Eaton Rapids officiating. Burial followed in the Rosehill Cemetery in Eaton Rapids. Pallbearers were Jeff Carter, Jimmy Byron, Steve Jecks, Mark E. Risner, Joe Jecks and Brian Love. For those desiring, a memorial contribution may be made to either the Calvary Lutheran Church or the American Heart Association, in memory of Susan J. Burns.
