Edward Busch
Edward Busch, 64, of Lansing, passed away May 22, 2001.
Mr. Busch was born Nov. 9, 1936 in Mt. Clemens, the son of Walter and Kathryn Busch. He grew up in Manistique, worked on the ore boats and served in the Army prior to making a career with the Michigan State Police. IN the Michigan State Police, he began as a trooper, transferred to the Canine Unit and finished his career in the forensic lab Latent Print Unit. He retired after 32 years of service. An avid outdoorsman, Mr. Busch enjoyed the simple life, his family, friends, and nature. He loved to travel up to his camp in the Upper Peninsula, where he spent much of his time. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Claire; four children, Brad Busch (special friend Donna Smith) of Stanton, Stephen Busch of Houghton Lake, Lisa Busch and Jennifer Busch of Lansing; brother, Louis (Ina) Busch; stepbrother, Butch (Jeanie) Lindle; three grandchildren, Megan, Joshua and Timothy Busch; and, numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral mass was celebrated May 26 at the Church of the Resurrection Catholic Church, with Rev. Fr. William Koenigsknecht as celebrant. Arrangements were by Palmer-Bush Lansing Chapel.
Carrie E. Butler
Carrie Elizabeth “Winnie” Butler, 84, of Bellevue, died Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2001 at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall.
Mrs. Butler was born June 12, 1917 in Kansas City, Mo., the daughter of Raymond and Carrie (Baggerly) Mulvany, and lived in the Bellevue area most of her life. She was a graduate of Bellevue High School in 1934, and a graduate of Western State Teachers College in 1939. She taught in the Bellevue school system until retiring in 1974. She married Charles on Aug. 7, 1940 in Bryan, Ohio. Most recently she was a member of the Bellevue Historical Society and the Eaton County Chapter of the Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel. Mrs. Butler most enjoyed spending time with her husband, children, grandchildren and friends.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Charles; daughters, Ann Haden of Battle Creek, Mary Jane Hayner of Chicago, Susan Stibitz of Munising, and Nancy (Mike) Olmstead of Bellevue; special friends, Tom Stibitz of Munising and Summer Parks of Kalamazoo; grandchildren, Brom Stibitz of South Korea, Abby Stibitz of Houghton, Kory and Kyle Olmstead of Kalamazoo; brother Max (Joy) Mulvany of Charlotte; sister-in-law, Helen Mulvany of Oregon; and many nieces, nephews and close friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Kenneth, Robert and Raymond Mulvany; sisters, Isabel Maute, Polly Larkin and Marian Hill. Graveside services were held at Riverside Cemetery, Bellevue, with Rev. Glenn Wegner, Yvonne Robbins and Patty Corning officiating. Memorial donations may be made to the Bellevue Memorial Scholarship Fund or the Bellevue Township Library. Arrangements were by Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue.
Christopher John Byer
Devoted husband and father, beloved son, Christopher John Byer of Holt, formerly of Eaton Rapids, died Friday, November 9,2001 at the age of 41. He was born November 4, 1960 in Eaton Rapids, the son of Samuel Wayne and Julia Ann (Norris) Byer. Chris was an Eaton Rapids High School graduate, class of 1979. He served in the U.S. Army from 1985 to 1988 with the 10th Mountain Commando Unit and was employed by Sparrow Hospital in Lansing. Music was an important area in Chris’s life, he was a drummer for many local bands, most recently “Backwoods” with special friends Leon Clark and Georgie Lawrence. Chris touched many lives and his love and awesome sense of humor will be greatly missed.
Surviving are his wife of 19 years Tami (Kirkland); daughter, Sami; parents, Sam and Julia Byer; brothers Jeff, Craig (Tomoko) and Scott (Fonda); mother and father-in-law, Norma and William Cole; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services were Monday, November 12th from the First United Methodist Church in Eaton Rapids with Rev. Tom Evans and Rev. Scott Boles, officiating. Burial was in the Rosehill Cemetery in Eaton Rapids. Pallbearers were Fred Cole, Leon Clark, George Heyman, Jon Cataline, Stacey Sutfin, Neal Sanford, Andy Beck and Ben Colestock. Arrangements were made by the Skinner Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the Sami Byer College Fund in memory of her father, Christopher J. Byer.
Cordelia Callahan
Cordelia Callahan, 93, of Charlotte, formerly of Texas, died Monday, June 11, 2001.
Mrs. Callahan was born Jan. 14, 1908 in Bradford, Pa., the daughter of Elmer and Bessie (Irvin) Cole. She was a home health care worker with UpJohn, and had been a lifelong member of the Southside Baptist Church in Ft. Worth, Texas. She is survived by son, Tim (Shirley) Callahan of Perry; three grandchildren, Sterling (Theresa) Jennings, Timothy Patrick and Gregory Scott (Kim) Anderson; four great-grandchildren, Cody and MacKenzie Callahan, and Nicholas and Morgan Anderson.
She was preceded in death by daughter, Patricia Joann.
Funeral services were held June 13 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with R. Raymond Rossell officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.
Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home, Inc., Charlotte.
Agnes Campbell
Agnes Campbell, 95, of Charlotte, died Tuesday, June 12, 2001.
Miss Campbell was born Oct. 14, 1905 in Urbana, Ill., the daughter of Sam and Alta May (Canaday) Campbell. She attended business college in Urbana, and owned Campbell’s Grocery in Champaign, Ill. Following that, she was on staff at the Grand Rapids School of Bible and Music, and later served on the staff of Frontier School of the Bible in LaGrange, Wyo. She finished her missionary career with the Child Evangelism Fellowship in Montana. She was currently a member of the Chester Gospel Church of Charlotte.
She is survived by nieces, Phyllis (Harold) Smuts of Charlotte, and Barbara (H. Albert) Sundberg of Indian River; and nephew, Lawrence (Beverly) Campbell of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents, and brothers, Samuel Clifford, Clarence, and Ralph.
Funeral services were held June 15 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Rev. H. Albert Sundberg officiating. Interment was at Woodlawn Cemetery, Urbana, Ill.
Memorial contributions may be made to Frontier School of the Bible, LaGrange, Wyo. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home, Inc., Charlotte.
Peter P. Cantine
Peter P. Cantine of Lansing, vice president and general manager of Lansing Community Newspapers, died Feb. 22, 2001 at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing. He was age 56.
Born Nov. 12, 1944 in Albion, Pete was the son of Walter and Georgene Cantine, who preceded him in death.
Pete began his work career as a typesetter for his mother and father when they owned the Grand Ledge Independent. In 1969, they sold the newspaper to Milliman Communications, which in turn sold the publication, along with others, to Suburban Communications, in 1980. Pete was involved in the newspaper business his entire working life, except for a brief period when he and his wife owned PJ’s Party Store at the corner of Mt. Hope and Marcy Road in Lansing.
Pete was a graduate of Ferris State University. He was named vice president and general manager of the Lansing-are newspaper chain, now known as Lansing Community Newspapers, in 1984.
He married Joann Titmus on Nov. 8, 1969, and she survives him. Also surviving are a daughter, Stephanie J. Cantine of Lansing; a brother, Jerry (Donna) Cvitkovic of Bellevue; two sisters-in-law, Kristine (John) Loeffler of Lansing and Nancy Titmus of Lansing; and nieces, nephews and many friends.
Funeral services will be held at the Gorsline Runciman Funeral Home at 900 E. Michigan Ave. in Lansing this Wednesday, Feb. 28 at noon. Rev. Dr. Susan K. Weier, pastor of the Pilgrim Congregational Church UCC of Lansing, will officiate.
Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Lansing. Visitation will be Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association in memory of Peter P. Cantine.
Gretchen Carman
Gretchen “Kelly” Carman, 52, of Wall Lake, Delton, died Friday, July 6, 2001 at Borgess Medical Center.
Mrs. Carman was born Jan. 10, 1949 in East Grand Rapids, the second of three daughters born to Wayne and Nila (Bluemly) Dreger. She grew up in East Grand Rapids and Charlotte. In 1967, she graduated from Charlotte High School and attended Olivet College and then the Goodman Institute in Chicago, where she studied performing arts. Life then took her to St. Joseph where she did news broadcasting for a local radio station. At that time on the air she became known as “Kelly Wright” and the name “Kelly” stuck with her ever since. Kelly moved to Battle Creek in the early 1970’s to do weather and news casting for Channel 41. While working in Battle Creek she met Keith Carman, and on Jan. 26, 1973 they were married. The Carmans traveled throughout the country as entertainers. In 1977 their son Christopher Wayne was born and the family moved to Wall Lake, Delton in 1982. Mrs. Carman returned to college and graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in education and integrated arts from Western Michigan University. She then taught elementary school in Kalamazoo and during that time earned a master’s degree in reading and English from EMU. Unfortunately her teaching career was cut short because of serious illnesses. In recent years, the Carmans were able to travel both in the U.S. and abroad. She also is remembered for activity with the Wall Lake Association.
She is survived by her husband, Keith; son, Chris; mother, Nila Dreger; sisters, Diane (Greg) Penix of Grand Ledge and Candice (Ronald) Roeder of Wall Lake, Delton; 13 nieces and nephews; and a host of family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her father.

John T. Carpenter
John Thomas Carpenter, infant son of David L. and Kristine M. (Donlin) Carpenter of Lansing, died Jan. 22, 2001.
He is survived by his parents; grandparents, Marilyn Bollock of Hessel, Clarence J. Carpenter of Lansing, and William and Patricia Donlin of Twinsburg, Ohio; great-grandparents, Leo and Helen Teachout of Courtland, Ohio; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Graveside services were held Jan. 26 at Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte, with Marie Hackworth officiating.
