Atha B. Carter
Atha Belle (Lawhead) Carter, 87, of Charlotte, died Friday, Nov. 23, 2001 at Claire Bridge of Delta Assisted Living Home.
Mrs. Carter was born Aug. 12, 1914 in Charlotte, the daughter of Wm. Roscoe and Bessie Belle (Love) Lawhead. She attended Charlotte schools, graduating in 1931. She also attended Eaton County Normal, and graduated from Western Michigan College in 1954. After teaching in the rural school system, she was an elementary teacher (first grade) in the Charlotte Public School System for 30 years, retiring in 1976. In 1952, in addition to teaching, Mrs. Carter supported and encouraged her husband Theo in his decision to purchase a local grocery store and begin his career as an independent businessman. She was able to watch their efforts develop into a Michigan chain of 23 stores, known as Carter’s Food Centers. Mrs. Carter was a member of the First Congregational Church, GFWC-Charlotte, Daughters of the American Revolution, and a life member of the Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel, as well as the Eaton County branch.
She is survived by a daughter, Connie (Keith) Bazaire of Charlotte; grandsons, Jeffrey (Holly) of Petoskey, Kevin of Charlotte, N.C., and Michael (fiancé Michelle) of Lansing; and great-grandchildren, Allison and Carter Bazaire of Petoskey.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Theodore; daughter, Carol Ann Gray; sisters, Alta Ree Frace and Fern deZeeuw; and brother, Harley Lawhead.
Funeral services were held Nov. 27 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Congregational Church of Charlotte, Hayes Green Beach Memorial Hospital in Charlotte, or the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Program. Arrangements were by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Donald G. Carter
Donald Guy Carter, 86, of Charlotte, died Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001.
Mr. Carter was born March 17, 1915 in Eaton County, the son of Guy and Pearl (Doane) Carter. He bottled milk for 25 years, and was a member of the First Baptist Church and Men’s Prayer and Breakfast Group. He was known around Charlotte as the downtown window cleaner.
He is survived by son, Donald Lee Carter of Plainwell; daughters, Rosealie (Larry) Demarest of Union City and Joan Lawrence of Texas; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; brothers, Raymond (Harriet) Carter and Lyle (Judy) Carter; sisters, Marie Nunhimer, Maxine (Clarence) Carnes, Mable (Clarreton) Cortright, Florence (Lyle) Jeffery; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Leola (Hutson) in 1998; daughter, Louise Masters; granddaughter, Tonya; and brothers, Merwine and Ivery.
Funeral services were held Sept. 14 at the First Baptist Church, Charlotte, with Rev. Richard Wilford officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home, Inc., Charlotte.
Earl J. Carter
Earl J. Carter was born on January 13, 1926 in Grand Rapids, Michigan and died on January 11, 2001. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in the South Pacific on a ship during World War II. He got out and worked at Diamond R.E.O. as a welder then re-entered the Navy during the Korean Conflict and retired as Chief Petty Officer in 1968. He relocated back to Eaton Rapids and started a mobile welding business, finally retiring in 1992. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He enjoyed fishing with his grandchildren, having family cookouts and picnics, being the pitcher at the family ball games and telling his many interesting Naval stories spanning the world. He will be greatly missed by friends and family.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Virginia; his son, Daniel (Kathy) of Eaton Rapids; his daughter, Linda Cruz (Martin Straney) of Potterville; 4 grandsons, Shane Wilshire, Daniel Carter Jr., Kevin Cruz and William Cruz; 1 granddaughter, Krysta Carter; and 4 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, January 15th, from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with Rev. Dr. David D’Arcy officiating. Burial with full military honors followed at the Rosehill Cemetery in Eaton Rapids. For those desiring, a memorial contribution may be made to the Mid Michigan Chapter Huntington’s Disease Society of America at 601 N. Waverly Rd., Lansing, Michigan 48918-2851, in memory of Earl J. Carter.
Kyle Carter
Kyle Carter, 38, of Muir died Feb.3, 2001.
Mr. Carter was born Nov. 11, 1962 in Charlotte, the son of Lyle and Judy Carter. He was a corrections officer for the State of Michigan, Ionia Maximum Facility for 12 years, and was a former firefighter for the Muir-Lyons Fire Department.
He is survived by his wife Karen (Hamilton); son, Josh; daughter Alicia; his parents Judy and Lyle Carter of Charlotte; sisters, Tessa (Ned) Stoltzfus of Charlotte and Tammy Lewis of Florida; brother-in-law, Russ (Shelly) Hamilton of Charlotte; sisters-in-law, Cindy (Bill) Fabijancic of Lansing, and Carrie (Scott) Hansen of Charlotte; brother-in-law, Steve Hamilton of Lansing; father-in-law, Russell (Susan) Hamilton of Lansing; and mother-in-law, Nancy Hamilton of Charlotte.
Funeral services were held Feb. 6 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Pastor Mark Booth officiating. Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte. Memorial contributions may be made to a trust fund for the children; envelopes are available at the funeral home.

Terry Lynn Carter
Terry Lynn Carter, age 43 of Eaton Rapids, died Monday, March 26, 2001 in Charlotte. Terry was born September 3, 1957 in Lansing. She graduated from Eaton Rapids High School, Class of 1976.
Surviving are her mother, Nancy, of Eaton Rapids; father, Bruce, of Montana; brother, Jeff (Nan) and sister, Cathy McQuay both of Eaton Rapids; beloved nephews and nieces, Michael and Matthew McQuay, Carli and Alison Bauknecht; grandmother, Pansy Cooke of Dimondale and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services were held on Friday, March 30, at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids. Interment followed at Rosehill Cemetery. Those desiring may make contributions to the Janet Porritt Fund for special needs children in memory of Terry Lynn Carter.
Thomas W. Cash
Thomas W. Cash, 56, of Battle Creek, formerly of Lansing, died Thursday, Nov. 22, 2001. Mr. Cash was born March 6, 1945 in Battle Creek, the son of William and Thelma (Burns) Cash, and had been a Battle Creek resident for nine years, coming from Lansing. He was a graduate of Battle Creek Lakeview High School, and was employed as a civilian employee of the Michigan National Guard in Lansing, retiring in 1992 after 10 years of service. He is survived by one brother, Stephen Cash of Battle Creek; one sister, Mary Ann Miller of Eaton Rapids; and one nephew, Joseph Miller of Eaton Rapids. He was preceded in death by his mother, Thelma (Burns) Cash in Feb. 1997; his father, William Cash in Oct. 1997; and a brother, John Charles Cash in July 1991. Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be held at a later date. Arrangements were by Burkhead-Green Funeral home, Charlotte.
Stuart C. Chalker
Stuart Charles Chalker, 84, of Eaton Rapids, died Friday, July 20, 2001.
Mr. Chalker was born May 10, 1917 in Lansing, the son of Charles and Hazel (Smith) Chalker. He was a boiler control repairman for the Lansing Board of Water and Light for 30 years. He served with the Army Air Force during World War II, and was a member of the Masons and the American Legion.
He is survived by daughter, Sharon Chalker of St. Johns; stepdaughters, Mary Lou Lohr of San Diego, Calif., and Kathy (Robb) Dickerson of Rogers, Ark.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Marle S. Clark
Marle Spencer Clark, 76, of Charlotte, died Friday, Oct. 19, 2001.
Mr. Clark was born Aug. 13, 1925 in Lansing. He served in the Navy during World War II on the Aircraft Carrier USS Belleau Wood, and retired from the Lansing Fire Department in 1980. He was an avid Winston Cup and Indianapolis racing fan.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Grace (Zimmerman); daughters, Connie (James) Parker and Donna (Dennis) Brendahl; five grandchildren, Pamela Kline, Earl Parker, and Derrek, Darren and Denise Brendahl; and four great-grandsons.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Kenard and Ruby (Spencer) Clark, and a sister Janice Myers.
Family Affirmation Services were held Oct. 23 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with R. Raymond Rossell officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home, Inc., Charlotte.
Nelson C. Clark
Nelson C. Clark, 78, of Charlotte died Jan. 10, 2001.
Mr. Clark was born Oct. 20, 1922 in Brandtford, Canada, the son of Clifford and Mary (Wilson) Clark. He graduated from Charlotte High School in 1948 and served with the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II, where he earned the Sliver and Bronze stars. He attended the Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church and had been a self-employed sales representative for many years. He is survived by his wife, Norma (Smith); two sons, David of Charlotte and Gary (Karen) of Peoria, IL.; one granddaughter, Jennifer of Peoria; one sister, Irene Willard of Charlotte; one brother, James of Niles; and several nieces and nephews. Private family services will be held at Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte. Arrangements were made by the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte. Memorial contributions may be made to the LAUMC.
