Jenny A. Riehm Crissman
Jenny “Jane” Arlene Riehm Crissman, 90, passed away May 19, 2001 at her home.
Mrs. Crissman was born Dec. 26, 1910 in Hillsdale, the daughter of Will Church and Maude Arilla (Johnson) Riehm. She married John Dale Crissman May 1, 1935; he preceded her in death in 1982. Mrs. Crissman was raised in Hillsdale, and attended Michigan Agriculture College. She raised her family in Charlotte, and retired to Lake City in 1962. She was a lifetime member of the Methodist Church, and was a long-time member of the Eastern Star.
She is survived by son, John Crissman, M.D. of Grosse Pointe Park; daughter, Carol Ann Ardis of Lake City; four grandchildren, Steve and Kevin Ardis, and John and Allison Crissman; and two great-granddaughters, Madeline and Makalu.
She was preceded in death by her husband John, and one sister, Mary Fowler Wilson.
Funeral services were held May 22 at United Methodist Church, Lake City, with Rev. Edrye Eastman Sealey officiating. Interment was at Lake City Cemetery.
Arrangements were by Young Funeral Home, Lake City.
Marguerite Cummins
F. Marguerite Cummins, 74, of Bellevue, died March 28, 2001 at Trudy’s Home in Battle Creek.
Mrs. Cummins was born Dec. 21, 1926 to Elmer and Marjorie (Laird) Decker in Tiptonville, Tenn. She attended Tiptonville High School and moved to Muskegon in 1944. She was a homemaker. She married C. Wallace “Wally” Cummins on June 21, 1947 in Muskegon; he died April 4, 1996. She was a member of Bellevue United Methodist Church, a bridge club, a book club, and a charter member of both the Etc. Clubs and the Old Mill Co-op.
She is survived by daughters, Nancy Edwards of Bellevue and Lynn Keller of Battle Creek; sons, Donald Cummins of Battle Creek, and William and Murray Cummins of Bellevue; eight grandchildren and five step-grandchildren; brother, Bruce Decker of Muskegon; and sisters, Ellen Grant of Lexington, Ky., and Joyce Anne Yoder of Santa Ana, Calif.
Services were held March 31 at Bellevue United Methodist Church, with Pastor Mark Thompson officiating. Interment was at Riverside Cemetery, Bellevue.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Wally Cummins Fund at Binder Park Zoo, Alzheimer’s Association, Bellevue Public Library, Bellevue United Methodist Church Kitchen Fund, or to Good Samaritan Hospice Care.

Verda L. Cunningham
Verda L. “Gale” Cunningham, 77, of Charlotte died Jan. 18, 2001, at Sparrow Hospital, Lansing.
Mrs. Cunningham was born June 20, 1923 in Muncie, IN, the daughter of Roscoe and Alta (Carpenter) Gale and had been a Charlotte resident for about 25 years. She was a 1941 graduate of Royerton (IN) High School and a retired employee of Aluminum Extrusion Division of Hoover Group, Charlotte. She was a member of Charlotte Eagles, American Legion Auxiliary and VFW Auxiliary.
She is survived by five sisters, Naomi Hurry of Lynn, IN, Margaret Garver of Warsaw, IN, Deloris Nichols of Muncie, IN, Imajean Brown of Bedford, IN, and Reba Shorter of North Fr. Myers, FL; two stepdaughters, Judith Campbell and Janie Hole; one stepson, Billy Cunningham; several step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert “Bill” Cunningham in 1987; two sisters, Opal Talbert and Dorothy Eromo; and two brothers, Emery Gale and Donald Gale.
Services were Jan. 22 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel, Charlotte, with Rev. Glen Neal and Charles Jenson officiating. Interment will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte. Memorial contributions may be made to the Charlotte Eagles, VFW Auxiliary or American Legion Auxiliary.
Gladys M. Curtis
Gladys Marie (Kelley) Curtis, 81, of Charlotte, died May 30, 2001.
Mrs. Curtis was born March 18, 1920 in Clare, the daughter of George and Dora (Miller) Highlen. She was a member of the Congregational Church in Charlotte, an avid square dancer, and enjoyed gardening and traveling. She is survived by daughters, Charlotte (Kelly) Custer of Edwardsburg, Betty Feintuch of Okemos, Janet (Ron) Baker of Eaton Rapids, Linda (Dick) Feldpausch of Holt and Tammy (David) Sercombe of Hanover; son, Leonard Kelley of Arizona; daughter-in-law, Gwen Kelley of Arizona; 23 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter; sister, Fern Jenkins of Lansing; and close friend, Ray Burley of Charlotte.
She was preceded in death by a son, Fred Kelley; brother, George Highlen; and sister, Flossie DeBarr. Funeral services were held June 2 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Rev. Donald O. Phillips officiating. Interment was at Needmore Cemetery, Charlotte.

Connie L. Darling
Connie Lorraine Darling, 60, of South Lyon, died Friday, March 2, 2001.
Mrs. Darling was born April 21, 1940, in Vermontville, the daughter of Thomas and Eloise (Hadden) Seitz.
She is survived by her husband Frank Darling of South Lyon; son, Thomas (Kris) Darling of Howell; daughter, Kim (Jim) Frisbie of Howell; grandchildren, Tara and Nicole Darling, and Mickey and Jamie Frisbie; and mother, Eloise and step-father, Lewis Link of Howell.
Funeral services were held March 5 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with R. Raymond Rossell officiating. Interment was at Woodlawn Cemetery, Vermontville.

Verdan P. Davenport
Verdan P. Davenport, 88, of Grand Ledge, died Thursday evening, June 21, 2001 at a Delta Township nursing home.
Mr. Davenport was born Sept. 30, 1912 in Portland, a son of Perry and Tacy (Peacock) Davenport. He was a World War II Army veteran, a farmer and woodworker. He attended the Grand Ledge Senior Citizens group.
He is survived by daughter, Carol Conley of Grand Ledge; son, Roger (Marie) Davenport of Mulliken; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; one sister, Jean Kyte of Grand Ledge; two brothers, Sheldon Davenport and Harold (Sally) Davenport, both of Lansing; and special friend, Marion Humphrey.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Shirley Kinney and Lucille Avendshein.
Services were held June 26 at Barker-Leik Funeral Home, Mulliken, with Rev. Steven Bohus officiating. Cremation followed the services. Interment will be held at a later date at Meadowbrook Cemetery, Mulliken.
Laura L. Davidson
Laura Lawless Davidson, 93, of Grand Ledge died Jan. 27, 2001.
Mrs. Davidson was born March 7, 1907, the daughter of Peter and Ana Huhn. She was a lifelong area resident and member of St. Michael Church for 70 years.
Surviving are sons, Leo (Shirley) Lawless and Don (Mary) Lawless, both of Grand Ledge; 13 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by husband, Arthur Lawless and husband, Leslie Davidson; and a daughter, Carol Edwards.
Funeral Mass was celebrated Jan. 30 at St. Michael Catholic Church, With Fr. Robert McGraw as Celebrant. Interment was in Oakwood Cemetery.
Arrangements were by Holihan-Atkin Funeral Home, Grand Ledge.

John M. Davis
John M. Davis, 86, of Olivet, died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001.
Mr. Davis was born in Battle Creek on Jan. 5, 1915. He moved to Eaton County in the early 1930s and lived there for over 70 years. He married Clara Hungerford on Oct. 31, 1936, and was a life-long farmer, residing at Tanglewood Farm since he was 13 years old. Mr. Davis applied many innovative practices to farm management that were written up in numerous farming publications, including cover stories in Successful Farming, Capper’s Farmer and Nation’s Agriculture. He received numerous agricultural awards, including Michigan Milk Producers Association “Fieldman of the Year” in 1978. Mr. Davis was the first farmer to speak at Michigan Farmers Week at MSU in 1952, and he subsequently made many public appearances, always incorporating humor to emphasize his point. He served on the board of directors of the Michigan Milk Producers Battle Creek local for 12 years, and served his community on the Olivet School Board for 21 years. Mr. Davis shared his love of horses with the community by giving sleigh and wagon rides.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Clara; sons, Aaron (Dorothy), Don (Pam) and Jon (Linda); daughter, Hazle (Fred) Nurnberger; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; sisters, Barbara McLaughlin of Charlotte and Ann Meyers of North Carolina; and several nieces and nephews.
Per his request, Mr. Davis’ body was donated to MSU for medical research. Memorial services were held Dec. 13 at Olivet Congregational Church, with Rev. Roy Backus officiating.
