Ida G. French

Ida G. French, age 70 of Charlotte, died June 16, 2001 at Ingham Medical Hospital. Mrs. French was born in Eaton County, the daughter of George B. and Mary Ethel (Andrews) Hall.

She is survived by daughters, Charlotte (Tom) Donaldson of Scottville, Mary E. ( Norman) Stadel of Bellevue, Georgia Farr of Charlotte, Ruth French of Onondaga and Wilma (Dan) Ketchum of Linden; sons, Charles French of Onondaga, Martin (Lisa) French of Charlotte, Richard (Monica) French of Marshall, and William (Kim) French, Jr. of Onondaga; 40 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; brother, George Z. Hall of Charlotte; sister, Pauline Bruch of Kalkaska and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; former husband, William Sr.; sister, Mary (Leonard) French; and grandchildren John Pontz and Tom Van Horn; and beloved friend Homer Bryant.

The family will receive visitors from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte. Funeral Services will be 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 20, 2001 at the Pray Funeral Home. If desired, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Frederick F. Frith

Frederick Francis Frith, 99, of Vermontville died Feb. 14, 2001 at Pennock Hospital.

Mr. Frith was born in Vermontville Twp., Eaton Co., the son of Joseph Allen Frith and Mary Etta Dean. He worked for Fisher Body 18 years, Eaton Co. Road Commission of 12 years, and was township supervisor for 12 years. He was the oldest living member of the Vermontville Methodist Church.

He is survived by three sons, Lawrence (Marville) of Vermontville; Morris Fred (Lillian) of Grand Rapids; Earl Richard (Arlene) of Lansing; eight grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by son, Donald Robert, in World War II; and wife, Margaret in 1983.

Funeral services were held Feb. 16 at Vermontville Methodist Church, with Rev. Jeff Bowman and Rev. David Johnston officiating. Interment was at Woodlawn Cemetery, Vermontville.

Taylor R. Fritz

Taylor Rose Fritz, infant daughter of Robert and Debby (Kantola) Fritz of Bellevue, died at birth, Jan. 24, 2001 at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo.

Surviving are her parents and brother, Anthony Trainor of Bellevue; maternal grandmother, Rosemary Kantola of Marquette; paternal grandparents, Douglas and Betsy Fritz of Manistique and paternal great-grandparents, Robert and Rose Fritz, and paternal great-grandfather, Julius (Bud) Siegert, all of Battle Creek.

She was preceded in death by maternal great-grandfather, Laurie Kantola. Memorial services will take place at a later date. Arrangements by Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue.

Hazel I. Fruin

Hazel I. (Ziegler) (Terry) Fruin, 91, of Bellevue, formerly of Charlotte, Battle Creek and Lansing, died Thursday, May 3, 2001 in Battle Creek Health System.

Mrs. Fruin was born June 10, 1909 in Walton Township, the daughter of Frank and Millie (Shrontz) Ziegler, and attended Butterfield Rural School in Brookfield Township. She graduated from Charlotte High School in 1926, and attended Argubright Business School in Battle Creek. She worked at the Battle Creek Sanitarium, the Directory Co., and Postum in Battle Creek. She operated the Charlotte Pharmacy with her first husband, John Terry, until 1949, and later purchased Terry Drug Store in Lansing in 1950, selling it in 1958 after her husband’s death. Mrs. Fruin also worked for Rauser Drug Co. for four years, Michigan National Bank for two years, and the Michigan Department of Education Rehabilitation for 15 years, retiring in 1979. She moved to Bellevue in 1989. She married John Terry on June 30, 1949; he died June 30 1957. She married Hollis Fruin on March 22, 1989; he survives. Mrs. Fruin was a member of the Jobs Daughters while in Charlotte; Charlotte OES #218 and the White Shrine; a member and past president of the Ingham County Pharmacy Association; a member of Plymouth Congregational Church in Lasing and president of its Women’s Fellowship; and a past president of the Sparrow Hospital Service Auxiliary, with 25 years of volunteer service.

She is survived by her husband, Hollis; a cousin, Clara Holcomb of Charlotte; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services were held May 7 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel, Charlotte, with Rev. Dr. Patrick Shelley officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte. Memorial contributions may be made to Plymouth Congregational Church, or the Charlotte OES #218. Arrangements by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte.

Hollis B. Fruin

Hollis B. Fruin, 96, of Bellevue, died Aug. 16, 2001 at Battle Creek Health System.

Mr. Fruin was born July 18, 1905 in Bellevue Township, the son of Arthur and LoVira (Baldwin) Fruin. He graduated from Bellevue High School in 1924 and attended Argubright Business College. His paternal grandparents came to Bellevue in 1843, settling on the farm where Arthur was born and lived for many years. Mr. Fruin worked for Eaton Manufacturing as a machine operator and supervisor until 1945. In 1938 he formed a partnership with Myrlon Dunbar to create the Dunbar – Fruin Ford Agency Sales & Service. He bought out his partner in 1962 and operated Fruin Ford in Bellevue, retiring in 1968. He married Frances Cook in 1938; she died Sept. 26, 1988. He later married Hazel Zeigler Terry in 1989; she died this year. He was a charter member of UAW Local 196 at Eaton Manufacturing; a life member of Bellevue Lodge #83 F. &A.M., where he was past master and a Royal Arch Mason in 1936, and Knights Templar #33; first president of Bellevue Chamber of Commerce in 1947; a member of Lions Club, Chief Lion in 1966; past president of Bellevue Commercial Club in 1966; chairman of Eaton County Zoning Board and Board of Appeals in 1956, and the Bellevue Township Board of Review; chairman of Eaton County Republicans in 1960’ and served on the Ford District Council. At the time of his death he was the holder of the “Golden Cane,” given to Bellevue’s oldest citizen. He was an avid golfer.

He is survived by 10 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two wives, a sister, Florence Hughes, and brothers, LaVerne and Alden.

Services were held Aug. 20 at Bellevue United Methodist Church, with Rev. David Morton officiating. Interment was at Riverside Cemetery, Bellevue.

Memorial donations may be made to the Humane Society-Calhoun Area. Arrangements were by Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue.

Frederick Fuhr

Frederick Fuhr, 93, of Hastings, died Tuesday, April 17, 2001 at St. Mary’s Hospital, Grand Rapids.

Mr. Fuhr was born Feb. 19, 1908 in Hope Township, Barry County, the son of Frederick and Tina Bell (Hall) Fuhr. He was raised in the Delton area and attended rural schools there. He lived most of his life in Barry County. Mr. Fuhr married Gertrude Todd in 1928; the marriage ended in divorce. He married Mercile Day in 1944; she died in 1988. He remarried Gertrude in 1989; she survives. Mr. Fuhr’s employment included farming, the old Bookcase & Chair Co. in Hastings, the former Hastings Aluminum Products Co., Eaton’s in Battle Creek, and was a professional race car driver for many years. He was a racecar enthusiast and a formerly well-known driver in midget car competition. His racing career spanned the years from 1939 to 1950, and in 1949 he was honored as “ The High Point Driver of the Year” in midget cars. He traveled extensively, winning numerous honors in racing. He was a life member of the Windchester Speedway in Indiana, and a long-time member of the “Old Timers Race Car Club.” He was an avid collector of race cars and his experience and expertise was often solicited by enthusiasts from around the world. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping. He raised and trained hunting dogs for many years, and was a former member of the Nashville Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Gertrude; two sons, Gordon (Willo) of Hastings, and Frederick (Kathleen) Jr. of Charlotte; 11 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Patricia Fuhr of Hastings; and two half-brothers, Keith Lechleitner of Grand Rapids, and Clarence Lechleitner of Sun City, Ariz. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mercile; son, Franklin “Frank” in 1988; two sisters and three brothers. Services were held April 20 at Wren Funeral Home, Hastings, with Pastor Ryan White officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Disease Foundation, Barry County Animal Shelter, or the Hastings Emmanuel Episcopal Church Building Fund.

David L. Fuller

David LeRoy Fuller, of Olivet, passed away Sept. 29, 2001 at his home on Pine Lake.

Mr. Fuller was born Nov. 30, 1934 at home in Lake Odessa, the son of Carlton Arunah and Frances (Darling) Fuller and had been an Olivet resident since 1959. He graduated from Lake Odessa High School in 1952, with many awards in sports. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1952, serving in Germany for about two years, where he earned the Army of Occupation Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. Mr. Fuller also served on the U.S. Army basketball team, winning games in Europe. He earned a bachelor of science degree from Western Michigan in 1959, majoring in industrial arts and physical education/coaching, and received a permanent teaching certificate in secondary education in 1959. He taught industrial arts and coached all sports at Olivet High School for 30 years. Mr. Fuller was a member of the Olivet First Assembly of God and its Men’s Fellowship Group, was a member of the 700 Club, the American Center for Law & Justice, supported Family Life Radio and the Billy Graham Crusade, served as song leader at Nashville Baptist Church for 17 years, was a member of the Promise Keepers, and enjoyed traveling. He was married to Judith Altenhein Hollenbeck on July 29, 1967 at the Olivet Congregational Church by Dr. Morris Boucher.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Judith; six children, Karen Sue Petersen of San Antonio, Texas, Daniel Lynn (Sylvia) Fuller of Battle Creek, Christine Hollenbeck of Ovid, Sheila Beth Terry of Helendale, Calif., Eric David (Tracy) Fuller of Olivet and Erin Judith (Gregory) Bliss of Olivet; 10 grandchildren, Ryan, Marc and Hannah Petersen, Jeremy and Jamie Fuller, Rebekah and Daniel Gibson, Rainey Hare, Christopher Terry and Cameron David Fuller; brother, Robert Eugene (Patricia) Fuller of Hastings; and sister, Carlene (Clifford) Shooltz of Dewitt.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services were held Oct. 2 at the Olivet First Assembly of God, with Rev. Douglas Hammond officiating. Interment was at the Olivet Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family. Arrangements were by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte.

Effie M. Fuller

Effie M. Fuller, age 89, died Wednesday, December 5, 2001 in Delta Twp. Effie was born July 30, 1912 in Eaton Rapids, the daughter of Jay Morris and Alice Leora (Miller) Seelye. She was a life member of the Eaton Rapids First United Methodist Church, former President of the Eaton Rapids School Board and the business manager for the Eaton Rapids Medical Clinic from 1964 to 1979. Mrs. Fuller was preceded in death by her brother, George Seelye.

Surviving are her husband of 65 years, James; 2 daughters, Georgia (Homer) Bentley, Marcia (David) Livingston both of Eaton Rapids; 9 grandchildren, Amy (David) Harris, Matthew Bentley, Stephanie (John) Bentley-Weise, Dacia (Jeffrey) Parker, Erin (Timothy) Lemke, Nathaniel Bentley, Jessica Livingston, Jacob Livingston, Omaira (David) West; 2 great-grandchildren, Samuel Weise, Chloe Weise; sister-in-law, Betty Webb of Galesburg; she was a special grandmother to Sarah Copp, Jeannie Werkema and their families.

Funeral services were held on Monday, December 10, at the First United Methodist Church, Eaton Rapids. Those desiring may make contributions to the First United Methodist Church in memory of Effie Fuller. Arrangements were made by the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids.
