Bruce E. Greenshields

Bruce Edward Greenshields, 70, of Lakeland, FL, formerly of Charlotte and Mason, died Dec. 24, 2000.

Mr. Greenshields was born Aug. 16, 1930, and had retired from the U.S. Navy Seals Team 2 after 20 years of service. He had also retired from the Ingham County Sheriff Department after 20 years of service.

Surviving are three sons, Christopher Greenshields and fiancée Melissa Cuthrie, Shawn (Laura) McNamara and Bud (Jill) McNamara; four daughters, Debbie Teachout, Robin (Kevin) Armstrong, Amber (J.B.) Croke and Heather (Todd) Hunt; numerous grandchildren; three sisters, Beverly (Richard) Trumley of Charlotte, Kathryn (Pat) Mason and Carol Thompson; and, one brother, Harry Janes. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan in 1996; and two daughters, Maureen and Brenda. Services are Tuesday, Jan. 2, at 6 p.m. at the Ingham County Fairgrounds Community Building, 700 E. Ash St., Mason. There will be no visitation. Local arrangements were made by the Gorsline-Runciman Co. Ball-Dunn Chapel, Mason. Memorial contributions may be made to the U.D.T. SEAL Association, P.O. Box 5365, Virginia Beach, VA 23471.

Van R. Groner

Van R. Groner, 42, of Sandusky, died Friday, Dec. 7, 2001 at Port Huron Hospital.

Mr. Groner was born Sept. 29, 1959 in Battle Creek, the son of Carol Marsh of Charlotte and the late Robert Groner. Mr. Groner was the manager of the Sandusky Family and Farm Supply Center in Sandusky.

He is survived by two sons, Brandon Groner and Austin Groner, both of Sandusky; mother, Carol Marsh of Charlotte; one brother, Alan (Jan) Groner of South Carolina; four sisters, Joni Briggs of Potterville, Cara James of South Carolina, Anne (Jesse) Kemp of Virginia and Roberta Groner of Hastings; one uncle, Arthur (Pam) Groner of Bellevue; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Dec. 11 at Hacker Funeral services were held Dec. 11 at Hacker Funeral Parlors, Sandusky, with Pastor Mark Morningstar officiating. Interment was at Riverside Cemetery, Bellevue, on Dec. 12.

Memorial donations may be made to the family in care of Brandon Groner, 62 Austin St., Sandusky, MI 48471.

Evanelle Elizabeth Hackett

Evanelle E. Hackett, age 85 of Eaton Rapids and formerly of Higgins Lake, died Sunday, March 18, 2001 at St. Lawrence Homeward Bound Rehabilitation in Dimondale. She was born in Iowa August 29, 1915, the daughter of Logan and Ina (Clark) Stingley. She co-owned and operated Donn-Elle Electric and Donn’s Electric and Plumbing at Higgins Lake. She was an activist in the establishment of labor unions and a fighter for women’s rights. She was a member of ST. Michaels Parish of Roscommon. Preceding her in death was her husband of 51 years, Donn Hackett.

Surviving are daughter, Judi Coolidge and her husband David Walter; grandchildren, Joan Coolidge, Laura and David Barrett, Mike and MaryAnn Coolidge, Steve and Susan Coolidge; great-grandchildren, Marc, Amanda, Carly, Cody, Echo Clayton and Cady; her sister, Jean Martelletti Gaskin and husband Roy; special niece Mary Fisher Cook; also many other special loved nieces, nephews and their families.

Evanelle was one of the first heart peacemaker patients in the 1960’s and wanted her body donated to medical research at M.S.U. The family wishes to thank Dr. Gupta and his office staff, Eaton Rapids Medical Center, especially the nurses – you were wonderful. Thanks to the entire staff at St. Lawrence Dimondale’s Home-ward Bound Program, you were wonderful. Also, the Leonard Street neighbors, Wendi’s Hallmark, Felpausch, Rottenbuchers and Eaton Federal Bank.

Clair Hager

Clair “Pat” Hager, 90, died April 17, 2001.

Mr. Hager was born in July 1910. Many in the community will remember him from his employment as a car salesman in Charlotte, and for showing horses at horse shows for many years.

He is survived by a sister; and one son, Robert “Bob” of South Carolina.

No services were held. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.

Betty J. Haley

Betty J. Haley, age 77 of Eaton Rapids, died Saturday, March 3, 2001 in Lansing. Betty was born December 28, 1923 in Lansing, the daughter of Clarence Harold and Gladys (Sheffield) Davis. Mrs. Haley’s greatest love was for her family. She was formerly employed at Felpausch in Eaton Rapids and her hobbies were square dancing and playing bingo. Betty was preceded in death by her brother, Harold Davis, and sister, Ileta Clouse.

Surviving are her husband of 59 years, James M.; 2 sons, Jerry L. (Kristine) Haley of Charlotte, Richard (Nancy) Haley of Springport; 7 grandchildren, Fonda Byer, Kevin Haley, Stephen Terry, Tony Haley, James Haley; 11 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 6, 2001, 2:00 p.m. at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids. Internment will follow at Rosehill Cemetery. Those desiring may make contributions to Mid-Michigan Hospice House in memory of Betty Haley.

Mable L. Hall

Mable Lucile (Snyder) Hall, 80, passed away Saturday, May 5, 2001 in her home in Lake City.

Mrs. Hall was born Dec. 21, 1920 in Aetna Township, Missaukee County, the daughter of James and Cecil May (Cain) Snyder. She married Norton LeRoy Hall on Oct. 21, 1940 in Aetna Township, Merritt. They have four children together: Edwin (Alice) Hall, Lester (Alta) Hall and Bernice Paul, all of Eaton Rapids, and Shirley (Joe) Place of Charlotte. The Halls lived in Detroit, Flint and Vassar, and settled in Eaton Rapids in 1952. In 1990 they moved from Eaton Rapids to Lake City. Mrs. Hall retired from the Pickle Factory in Eaton Rapids in the late 1970s, where she was a pickle packer. She was a kind-hearted soul who was loved by all who knew her and will be missed as a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend.

She survived by her husband of 60 years, Norton Hall; four children, eight grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren; brother, Dorman Snyder of Cadillac; sister, Dorothy Fraser of Lake City; and, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Victor, Stuart, Ward and Ivan; and sisters, Polly Hatt and Hazel Duncan.

Funeral services were held May 8 at Young Funeral Home, Lake City. Interment was at Aetna Township Cemetery.

Memorial contributions maybe be made to the charity of one’s choice. Arrangements by Young Funeral Home, Lake City.

Peggy S. Hall

Peggy Sue Hall, 42, of Charlotte, died Tuesday, May 22, 2001 at Sparrow Hospital, Lansing, after an extended illness.

She was born October 6, 1958 in Albion, and was a lifelong resident of the Charlotte area. She had been employed by Dymond’s Hatchery, Eaton County Medical Care Facility, and Green Bay Foods.

She is survived by one daughter, Misty Dawn Cripe of Eaton Rapids; one son, Ralph Lynn Hall of St. Johns; three grandchildren; her mother and stepfather, Stella and Les Emard of Charlotte; her father, Jackie Eugene Hall of Kentucky; and four brothers, Timothy Lee Hall of Vermontville, Robert Eugene (Sheila) Hall, Jimmy Dean Hall, and Frederick Lee Hall, all of Charlotte.

Funeral services were held May 25 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel, Charlotte. Interment was at Rick Creek Cemetery, Lee Township, Calhoun County.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family. Arrangements were by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte.

Kenneth D. Halliwill

Kenneth D. Halliwill, 42, of Nashville, died Monday, June 11, 2001 at his residence.

Mr. Halliwill was born Jan. 9, 1959 in Charlotte, the son of Lowell and Marlys (Brown) Halliwill. He was raised in the Nashville area and attended area schools, graduating in 1977 from Maple Valley High School. He then continued his education at State Technical College in Plainwell, where he studied to be a machinist. After completing his education, he accepted a position with Twin City Foods in Lake Odessa, from where he retired in 1994. He was known as a diligent worker who enjoyed “tinkering” with electronics, auto racing, music, and his truck.

He is survived by seven brothers, Bob (Patsy), LeRoy (Karen) and David (Stephanie), all of Charlotte, Jim (Maggie) and Raymond (Tamie), both of Nashville, Ed (Donna) of Eaton Rapids, and Ernie (Caroline) of Curtis; two sisters, Linda (Bill) Pullen of Olivet, and Mary (Loren) Lehman of Nashville; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lowell and Marlys (Brown) Halliwill. Services were held June 14 at Maple Valley Chapel, Nashville, with Rev. Don Roscoe officiating. Interment was at Woodlawn Cemetery, Vermontville.

Donald S. Halsey

Donald S. Halsey, age 63 of Springport, passed away September 25, 2001. He was born April 15, 1938 in Hastings, Michigan to Edward & Dorothy (Knickerbocker) Halsey.

Survivors include brother David Halsey & sister Sue (Keith) Hiatt both of Eaton Rapids; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and stepfather Wayne Bradford.

Per his request, cremation has taken place and there will be no services. The family was served by Sherwood Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Grass Lake, Michigan.
