Geraldine Hammond

Geraldine “Cherry” Hammond, 70, of Nashville, died Friday, June 29, 2001 at VA Medical Center in Battle Creek.

Mrs. Hammond was born April 16, 1931, the youngest daughter of Leeland and Agnes (Kinnie) Weaks. She was raised in the Nashville area and attended area schools, graduating in 1950 from WK Kellogg School. She then continued her education in the U.S. Army, where she served as a nurse. It was during her years in service that she met her husband, Daniel Hammond; he preceded her in death. Mrs. Hammond spent most of her time as a mother and homemaker. Her hobbies included fishing, bowling and bingo. She was a member of the Nashville VFW.

She is survived by sons, Michael Hammond, Daniel Hammond and Patrick (Nancy) Hammond of Hastings; five grandchildren, Cal, Taylor, Brandie, Christopher and Jasmine Hammond; sisters, Mildred Houghtaling and Virginia Mainard, both of Houston, Texas, and Barbara Todd of Hastings; and, special caregiver and visitor, Luella Falkner.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel.

Services and internment were held July 3 at Lakeview Cemetery, Nashville.

Memorial contributions may be made to the VA Medical Center, Battle Creek. Arrangements were by Maple Valley Chapel, Nashville.

Terry M. Handricks Jr.

Terry Michael Handricks Jr., 29, of Bellevue, died Dec. 18, 2001. Mr. Handricks was born Sept. 5, 1972, the son of Terry Handricks and Sue (Cleveland) Handricks in Battle Creek. He attended Bellevue High School in 1990. Mr. Handricks worked 10 years in construction as an iron worker for Ironworkers Union Local 340 in Battle Creek. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and deep sea fishing.

He is survived by a daughter, Jade Lesley of Battle Creek; sons, Terry Handricks III and Tyler Handricks of Jacksonville, Fla.; his father, Terry Handricks and mother, Sue Handricks, both of Bellevue; paternal grandmother, Alice Handricks of Albion, and maternal grandfather, Stanley Cleveland of Detroit.

Funeral services were held Dec. 21 at Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue, with Pastor Wendell Stine officiating. Interment was at Riverside Cemetery, Bellevue. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice. Arrangements were by Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue.

David R. Harmon

David R. Harmon, 54, of Charlotte, died Sunday, March 18, 2001 at his residence after a short illness.

Mr. Harmon was born Feb. 13, 1947 in Lansing, the son of Robert and Ardith (Fry) Harmon, and was a lifelong resident of the Charlotte area. HE was a 1965 graduate of Charlotte High School, had served in the U.S. Marine Corps in Vietnam and was a member of Maple City Post #2406 VFW in Charlotte.

He is survived by a son, Ryan Harmon of Ann Arbor; daughter, Katie Harmon of Ludington; his mother, Ardith (Fry) Harmon of Charlotte; and brother, Jon (Sally) Harmon of Charlotte.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Elmer Harmon.

Graveside services with full military honors were held March 21 at Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family.

Arrangements by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte.

Harriet K. Harris

Harriet K. (Leigon) Harris, 72, of Battle Creek, formerly of Bellevue, died Saturday, April 28, 2001 at Dosca Home.

Mrs. Harris was born March 22, 1929 in Convis Township, the daughter of Charles and Leona (Pierce) Harrison. Her marriage to Ralph Leigon Sr. in 1947 ended in divorce. She then married Brooks Harris in 1976; he died in 1982. She was employed many years in the packaging department at the Kellogg Company, and later worked as a short-order cook at several restaurants in Bellevue, Olivet and Battle Creek including Hosh’s and Vello’s in Battle Creek. She also worked as a dietitian at the VA Medical Center. She was an active volunteer with the American Red Cross and the VA Medical Center. She spend a great deal of time assisting the elderly and enjoyed playing bingo and being with her grandchildren.

She is survived by daughters, Orlanda (Stephen) O’Connor of Wheaton, Ill., Robbin Leigon of Battle Creek, Julie Douglas of Bellevue and Tracy (Adam) Wheeler of Olivet; son, Ralph (Connie) Leigon of Charlotte; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; brothers, Sheldon Harrison and William Harrison of Bellevue, and Willard Minor of Colon; and sister, Velma Potter of Charlotte.

Services were held May 1 at Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue, with Pastor Harold King officiating. Interment was at Riverside Cemetery, Bellevue.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Parkinson’s Association or Heartland Hospice. Arrangements by Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue.

Janice R. Harris

Janice R. (Persons) Harris, 66, of Olivet, died Monday, May 7, 2001 at her residence after an extended illness.

Mrs. Harris was born in Battle Creek, the daughter of Clifford and Nina (Campbell) Persons and was a lifelong Lee Township/Olivet area resident. She was a 1952 graduate of Olivet High School and devoted her life to loving and caring for her family and friends. She married James Harris on Feb. 25, 1953 in Olivet.

She is survived by her husband, James; two daughters, Becky (Scott) Ramage and Tina (Mark) Rudolph, both of Olivet; a sister, Paula (Skip) Kunkel of Eaton rapids; mother-in-law, Edith Maki of Olivet; sister-in-law, Donna Persons of Olivet; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Dick Persons; and stepmother, Mary Persons. Funeral services were held May 9 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel, Charlotte, with Rev. William Barber officiating. Interment was at Lee Center Cemetery, Lee Township. Memorial contributions may be made to Good Samaritan Hospice or the American Lung Association. Arrangements by Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel, Charlotte.

Pearl L. Harrison

Pearl L. Harrison, 91, of Pennfield Township died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001 at Mercy Pavilion in Battle Creek.

Mrs. Harrison was born Feb. 15, 1909 in Kalamo Township to Newman and Addie (Clark) Sabin. She attended Bellevue High School and was employed in the packaging department at Kellogg Company for 24 years. She retired in 1974. She later worked in the cafeteria at reunions, watching Wheel of Fortune, playing cards, dancing, bowling, and cooking. She married Clifford Harrison on April 11, 1925, in Bellevue; he died in 1972.

Surviving are sons, Richard Harrison of Bellevue and Frederick Harrison of Gilbert Ariz.; 11 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and 22 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Evelyn Nelson of Eaton rapids; daughter-in-law, Betty Harrison of Bellevue; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by son, Robert Harrison in 1986 and daughters, Marjorie Cannon in 1969 and Sally K. Harrison in 1994; brothers, Claud, Kenneth, Clyde, Clifford and Paul Sabin; sister, Rosie Sabin; one grandson and two great-grandchildren.

Services were held Feb. 3 at Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue, with Pastor Stephen Covert officiating. Interment was in Riverside Cemetery, Bellevue.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family.

Vernon V. Hart

Vernon V. Hart, 93, of Charlotte, formerly of Flint, passed away Friday, Feb. 16, 2001.

Mr. Hart was born Jan. 7, 1908, in Murray, Ky. He lived most of his adult life in Flint, where he retired from Otto P. Graff Ford in 1970. He was a member of the Berean Baptist Church in Flint and later attended Calvary Baptist Church after moving to Charlotte.

He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Verna Mae; daughter, Julia (John) Parker of Murray, Ky.; son, Vernon (Shirley) Hart of Charlotte and Catherine (Carl) Anderson of Lansing; four great-grandchildren, Rachel and Garrett Anderson, and Matthew and Jenna Hart; sister-in-law, Helen Carpenter of Saginaw; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one grandson, Michael E. Hart.

Funeral services were held Feb. 20 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Pastor Mark Booth of Calvary Baptist Church officiating. Interment will be in the City Cemetery, Murray, Ky.

Elizabeth L. Hatfield

Elizabeth L. “Bette” Hatfield, 82, formerly of Olivet, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2001 at Vernon Manor in Viroqua, Wis.

Mrs. Hatfield was born Jan. 25, 1919. Her parents were Joseph and Lillie (McCartney) Fenske. She served in the United State Army during World War II. She was a member of the auxiliary of the Disabled American Veterans and an active member in the auxiliary of the Eagles in Viroqua, Wis.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Buford (Tom) Hatfield; son, Thomas Hatfield of Charlotte; daughter, Karen (Hatfield) Shoemake of Charlotte; grandchildren, Travis (Elsa) Shoemake and David Shoemake, both of East Lansing, and Jennifer Shoemake of Charlotte; great-grandchildren, Yessika and Joaquin Shoemake of East Lansing; siblings, Anna Marie Shier, Katherine Tarr and Paul Fenske, all of Weirton, W.Va.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Services were held Sept. 21 at Sime Funeral Home, Reedstown, Wis. Interment was at Bear Creek Cemetery, LaFarge, Wis.
