Ruth Covey Hovis

Ruth Covey Hovis, age 82 of Eaton Rapids, died Friday, November 3, 2001 in Holt. Ruth was born June 10, 1918 in Eaton Rapids, the daughter of Charles and Ema (Squires) Terrill. She attended the First Congregational Church in Eaton Rapids, was a member of the Eaton Rapids Community Hospital Auxiliary, and a member of the Alpha Guild. Ruth retired from the Michigan National Bank in 1982 after 20 years of service. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Arthur Covey in 1963 and her second husband, Bob Hovis in 1981.

Surviving are 2 daughters, Jan (E. Mark) Risner, Mary (Kent) Bartz both of Eaton Rapids; 4 step daughters; 3 grandchildren, Mark E. (Tamara) Risner of Eaton Rapids, Troy A. (fiancé, Michele Hiatt) Bartz of Richmond, V.A., Amy M. (John) Haight of Lake Odessa; 5 great-grandchildren, Michael and Lacey Risner, Patricia Freeman, Chance and Cameron Haight; brother, Keith (Joy) Terrill of Green Valley, AZ; sister-in-law, Dorathea Manger of Eaton Rapids; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Monday, November 5, 2001 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids with Rev. Stephen Klink officiating. Interment followed at Rosehill Cemetery, Eaton Rapids. The family wishes to thank the caregivers at Island View Adult Foster Care, Country Acres Adult Home and Martin Luther Holt Home. Those desiring may make contributions to either the Eaton Rapids Medical Center Foundation or the First Congregational Church in memory of Ruth Hovis.

Garland M. Howe

Garland Milton Howe, 78, of Charlotte, died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001.

Mr. Howe was born Sept. 23, 1922, in Allegan, the son of Chester and Beulah (Rice) Howe. He was a mechanic for Beacon Sales in Charlotte, U.S. Navy World War II veteran, Charlotte VFW Post 2406 Adjutant from 1964-1993, and head of the Post 2406 Honor Guard.

He is survived by brothers Menzo (Phyllis), Bart (Lillian), Eldon (Pat), all of Charlotte, and Louis of Olivet; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Helen in 1997.

Funeral services were held Feb. 1 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Rev. Arthur Salisbury officiating. Interment was at Ft. Custer National Cemetery in Augusta. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Charlotte VFW Post 2406.

Walter Earl Howe

Walter E. Howe, age 65 of Eaton Rapids, died Thursday, July 26, 2001. He was born November 2, 1935 in Eaton Rapids, the son of Harold “Punk” and Esther (Dana) Howe. Walt was the retired owner/operator of the Howe Distributing Company in Eaton Rapids. He graduated from Eaton Rapids High School in 1953. He was a member of the F.&A.M. Lodge #63 in Eaton Rapids and was a former Jaycees. Preceding him in death was his wife Elinor; father, Harold; and brother, Jim.

Surviving are 2 sons, Douglas (Mary) Howe of Eaton Rapids, and Michael (Margie) Howe of Richland; 6 grandchildren, Larry, Loni, Daniel, Dustin, Michael and Matthew; mother, Esther Howe of Eaton Rapids; brother, Bill (Marie) Howe of Laingsburg; 2 sisters, Linda (Keith) Pettifor of Indianapolis and Teri Howe of Eaton Rapids; special friend Dorothy Davis of Eaton Rapids and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Monday, July 30th, from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids. For those desiring, a memorial contribution may be made to either the American Diabetes Association or the American Cancer Society in memory of Walter E. Howe.

Inez O. Hughes

Inez Opal Hughes, 96, a lifelong resident of Charlotte, died Nov. 12, 2001 at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City, with her sister Sylvia Brown and her daughter, Joyce Braithwaite Brickley at her side.

Mrs. Hughes was born Nov. 1, 1905 in Ostrander, Ohio, the daughter of Lewellen and Eva (McDowell) Johnson, and married Thomas Edward Hughes in 1931 in Indiana. She cared for many children in her home for many years, and attended First Congregational Church of Charlotte.

She is survived by her children, Joyce Braithwaite Brickley of Traverse City, Marlene (William) Needham of San Diego, Calif., and Thomas Hughes of Owosso; grandchildren, Kevin Braithwaite of Charlotte, Todd Braithwaite of Haslett, Derek Needham of San Diego, Calif., and Gary Hughes of Lansing; great-grandchildren, Kaitlin Braithwaite of Charlotte and Brianne Needham of California; daughter-in-law, Lorna Hughes of Grand Ledge; and a sister, Sylvia Brown of Charlotte.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Thomas; son, Charles; grandson, Jeffery Needham; daughter-in-law, Mary Hughes; son-in-law, James Brickley; and by four sisters and one brother.

Memorial services will be held in Charlotte at a later date. Inurnment took place at Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.

Memorial donations may be made to the Charlotte chapter of the American Cancer Society. Arrangements were by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, Traverse City.

Michelle Hughson

Michelle Hughson, 35 of Jackson, Michigan, died September 17, 2001 in Jackson.

Ms. Hughson was born June 19, 1966 in Lansing, the daughter of James Michael and Sandra (Fetterman) Skrip. She was a Radiologist Technician for 12 years at Hayes Green Beach Hospital in Charlotte. She loved making oil candles.

She is survived by sons Lance and Luke of Mason, mother Sandra (Jan) Skrip of Apache Junction, Arizona, father James (Jean) Michael of Evart, Michigan, brother Russ Michael of Charlotte, half brothers Jon (Dawn) Skrip and Steve Skrip of Charlotte.

Memorial services were held Sept. 20 at Pray Funeral Home with Pastor Bert Walker officiating. Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Lance and Luke Hughson Trust.

Iceal “Ike” June Hummel

Iceal “Ike” June Hummel, age 83 of Eaton Rapids, died Thursday, March 8, 2001 at the Mother Teresa House in Lansing. She was born May 12 1917 in Williamston, the daughter of Albert and Bessie (Daley) Pierce. Ike was a graduate of Central High (Eastern High) School in Lansing. She had worked for Dr. Scheid and for many years worked for the State of Michigan both in Lansing, and was a faithful homemaker. Ike was a member of the Calvary Lutheran Church in Eaton Rapids and was a very active member of the Eaton Rapids Senior Center. Preceding her in death were her husband, Paul H. Hummel; children, Lawrence P. (Butch) Hummel and Constance L. (Connie) Merideth (Finkbeiner, Hummel); grandchildren, Teresa Hummel and Jon C. Lovell; sister, Vertia Gardner; brothers, Rex, Burr, Vern and Max Pierce.

Surviving are children, Elaine L. O’Connor, Kay F. (John) Lovell and Linda J. (A.J.) Monroe; daughter-in-law, confidante, helper and best friend, Cindy Johnson and daughter, Rebecca Waters; grandchildren, Larry (Gretchen) Knight, Paula Sawhill, Danny (Becky) Knight, Kathy (Dan) Hettinger, Lisa Lebtick, Julie Finkbeiner, David Finkbeiner, Sean (Michelle) Hummel, Chad Hummel, Erick Lovell, Dianna Lovell, John (Mary) Monroe, Karen Cease and Andy Monroe.

Funeral services were Monday, March 12th from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with Rev. Mark Eckert officiating. Burial followed in the Deepdale Memorial Gardens in Lansing. For those desiring, a memorial contribution may be made to either the Mother Teresa house of the Ingham Hospice in memory of Iceal “Ike” J. Hummel.

Charley E. Isham, Sr.

Charley E. Isham, Sr., of Leslie, went home to be with his Lord on Saturday, March 3, 2001, at the age of 74. Charley was born July 19, 1926 to Walter and Esther (Beers) Isham. He lived his entire life at the family farm on Walker Road in Leslie. Charley was a member of the Grand River Community Church/Leslie Free Methodist Church. He retired as a millwright from General Motors, Oldsmobile Division in July of 1980. His parents, two sisters, Helen (Arthur) Smith and Florence (Alton) Cook and one granddaughter, Christi Isham, preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Noreen (Dexter) Isham, two sisters, Lula (Kenneth) Brooks of Zephyr Hills, Florida and Thurza (Fay) Wright of Mason; Nine Children, Charley Eugene (Peggy) Isham of Leslie, Martha (Roger) Ott of Denver, Colorado, Kathy (Fritz) Whitman of Blissfield, Jim (Lisa) Isham of Leslie, Ruth (David) Thibault of Leslie, Russell (Char) Isham of Eaton Rapids, Daniel (JoAnne) Isham of Leslie, Esther (Richard) Wilson of Springfield, Missouri and Becky (Teddy) Sawyer of Eaton Rapids; 31 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at the Grand River Community Church / Leslie Free Methodist Church on Wednesday, March 7, 2001, 11:00 a.m. Internment will follow at the Walker Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Robertson Funeral Home’s Leslie Chapel on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Gideon Memorial Bible Fund, envelopes are available at the funeral home.

Gregory L. Johnson

Gregory Leroy Johnson, 54, of Charlotte, passed away Friday, Oct. 19, 2001 at Northfield Place, Whitmore Lake.

Mr. Johnson was born Dec. 7, 1946, in Hastings, the son of Clayton and Marion (Snow) Johnson. He was a 1965 graduate of Charlotte High School. He served in the U.S. Army in the 9th Infantry Battalion, and is a Vietnam veteran. He was fond of his horse, Johnny, and was an avid motorcycle enthusiast.

He is survived by his son, Heath Johnson, serving in the U.S. Air Force, stationed in California; brother, Winston (Dianne) Johnson of Charlotte; sisters, Deanna (Gerry) Becktel of Cloverdale, and Christine Johnson and her husband Larry Reynolds of Charlotte; nieces and nephews, Todd Becktel, Barbara Jeffery, Troy Becktel, Bradley Johnson and Deena Hollister.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Marcella, and his parents.

Graveside services were held Oct. 23 at Lakeview Cemetery, Nashville, with Rev. Al Metler officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled Veteran Fund. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home, Inc.
