Jean E. Klepper
Jean E. Klepper, of Long Lake, died Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001 at Evergreen Manor after a year-long illness.
Mrs. Klepper was born Sept. 26, 1922 in Kalamo Township, the daughter of Plenty and Sarah (Hamilton) Mapes. She graduated from Bellevue High School in 1941. She married Donald Klepper Jan. 9, 1944 in Eaton County; he died June 1, 1984 in Battle Creek. Mrs. Klepper was employed at the Kellogg Company from 1941 to 1945, and then returned from 1955 to 1975 when she retired. She enjoyed traveling with the seniors from Burnham Brook Center, playing bingo, sewing and crocheting.
She is survived by two daughters, Kay Ann (Arthur) Woody of Charlotte and Iva (Bill) McKeown of Battle Creek; three sons, Duane (Cindy) Klepper of Bellevue, Walter (Marty) Klepper of Dowling and Donald Klepper, Jr. of Long Lake; 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Glycene Robinson of Battle Creek and Harriett Winters of Long Lake.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald, and a brother, Walter Mapes.
Funeral services were held Oct. 20 at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home, with Pastor Robert Zuhl officiating. Inurnment of cremains will be at Lacey Cemetery at a later date.
Memorial donations may be made to the Burnham Brook Center or the American Cancer Society.
Virginia R. Kloppe
Virginia Rose Kloppe, 78, an eight-year resident of Narrow Lake, Springport, formerly of Grand Rapids, died Saturday, June 16, 2001.
Mrs. Kloppe was born Aug. 28, 1922 in Charlotte, the daughter of Dale and Pearl (Wilson) Betz. She was a member of the Char Lanes Bowling League, a former Campfire and Boy Scout leader, and a tutor for local children.
She is survived by daughter, Linda Kloppe of Narrow Lake; son, David (Linda) Kloppe of Jenison; sister, Dolliedale (Charles) Rohrbacher of Texas; grandchildren, Steven, Ryan and Sarah Kloppe of Jenison; great-grandchild, Camille of Jenison; and special friends, Sharon Belka, and Sue and Dana Ferguson of Narrow Lake.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo Kloppe in 1983, and a brother, Dale Betz.
Funeral services were held June 20 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Rev. Bob Doner officiating. Interment was at Greenwood Cemetery, Grand Rapids.
Memorial contributions may be made to Eaton County Medical Care Facility or the American Cancer Society; envelopes are available at the funeral home. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home, Inc., Charlotte.
Letha I. Knickerbocker
Letha I. Knickerbocker, age 83 of Eaton Rapids, died Wednesday, December 12, 2001 in Dimondale. Letha was born August 10, 1918 in St. Johns, the daughter of Harvey and Effie E. (Stewart) Geisenhaver. She retired from the Eaton Rapids Community Hospital as a dietician and loved gardening, flowers, and crocheting. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Clare Rockwood and stepson, Doug Rockwood.
Surviving are her husband, Merle; 2 step daughters, Phyllis Pettis of Fort Meyers, FL, Shirley (Jerry) Wolf of Holt; 2 stepsons, Jerry (Jane) Knickerbocker of Osseo, Larry Knickerbocker of Olivet; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; and 1 brother, Ray (Dee) Smith of Saugatuck.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, December 15, 2001 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids with Pastor Tom Evans officiating. Interment followed at Oakwood Cemetery, Eaton Rapids. Casket bearers were Bryan Knickerbocker, Scott Knickerbocker, Tim Kikendall, Josh Horwath, Steve Rockwood, and Andy Rockwood.
Merle D. Knickerbocker
Merle D. Knickerbocker, age 92 of Eaton Rapids, died Friday, December 28, 2001 in Dimondale. Mr. Knickerbocker was born April 11, 1909 in Eaton County, the son of Ernest and Ruby (Harshey) Knickerbocker. He retired in 1972 from Miller Plastics, Howell, and loved fishing and gardening.
He is survived by two daughters, Phyllis Pettis of Fort Meyers, FL, and Shirley (Jerry) Wolf of Eaton Rapids; two sons, Jerry (Jane) Knickerbocker of Osseo and Larry Knickerbocker of Olivet; 12 grandchildren/step-grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren/step-great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Edith, second wife, Madge, and third wife, Letha who passed away December 12, 2001.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 2, 2002 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids. Interment is at Oakwood Cemetery, Eaton Rapids.
Cleo D. Kreps
Cleo D. Kreps, 73, of Bellevue, died Friday, March 30 at his home. Mr. Kreps was born Feb. 16, 1928 in Ida, to Earl and Ada (Carney) Kreps. He served in the U.S. Army and later in the U.S. Naval Reserve. Mr. Kreps was a professional truck driver for many years with Gra-Bel and several other trucking companies. He married Doris Brose on July 21, 1951; she survives. He was a member of Teamsters, and enjoyed farming and baseball, especially the Detroit Tigers.
He is survived by sons, Steve (Sue) Kreps of Monroe, Jerry (Linda) Kreps of Ionia, Gary Kreps and Ron (Diane) Kreps, both of Bellevue, and Dave (Tami) Kreps of Nashville; daughter, Linda (Andy) Midtgard of Charlotte; brother, Hubert (Ilene) Kreps of Ft. Myers, Fla.; sister, Janice (Harold) Springer of Georgia; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Earl Kreps Jr., and his parents. Services were held April 3 at Shaw Funeral home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue, with Pastor Don Francis officiating. Interment was at Riverside Cemetery, Bellevue. Memorial contributions may be made to Eaton Community Hospice. Arrangements by Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue.
Lucile E. Krusel
Lucile E. (Bullock) Krusel of Belleville, Ill., died Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001 at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, Belleville, Ill.
Mrs. Krusel was born August 4, 1905 in Boston, Mass. She retired as a librarian for the City of Charlotte, and was a life member and past worthy matron with the Order of the Eastern Star in Charlotte.
Surviving are one son, Winn (Sally) Pardee of Shiloh, Ill.; a daughter, Mary (David) Hadley of Vermontville; three grandchildren, Barbara (Keith) Rodgers of Arlington, Texas, Elizabeth Pardee of Shiloh, Ill., Mary (Jim) Malan of McCord AFB, Wash.; two great-grandchildren Maxwell Matheny and Kathryn Rodgers; daughter-in-law, Eleanor Krusell of Phoenix, Ariz.; brother, Lewis S. (Margaret) Bullock of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and her extended family in Michigan, Arizona, and California.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hilding Krusell; one son, Hilding Krusell; and her parents, Henry and Annette (Lewis) Bullock.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Ann Episcopal Church in Caseyville, Ill., or to the Hospice of Southern Illinois, Inc.
Graveside services were held Feb. 28 at Valhalla Gardens of Memory, Belleville, Ill., with Rev. John C. Bettmann officiating.

Winston B. Lake
Winston “Bill” Brown Lake, 86, of Granbury, Texas, formerly of Charlotte, died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001. Mr. Lake was born May 31, 1914 in Vermontville, the son of Benjamin and Blanche (Hart) Lake. He was a tool crib attendant for A.E./Hoover Manufacturing in Charlotte.
He is survived by daughter, Helen Holder of Granbury, Texas; granddaughters, Lori Stephenson of Mason; Lisa (Stuart) Corder of Houston, Texas; great-grandson, Jeremy Begley; great-granddaughters, Sarah and Shelby Corder.
He was preceded in death by his wife Opal (Marsh) Lake in 1996.
Services will be 11:00 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 12 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Rev. Arthur Salisbury officiating. Interment will be in Sunfield Cemetery in Sunfield. Visitation will be 2-4 p.m. Sunday at Pray Funeral Home.

Gertrude P. Landers
Gertrude Pauline Landers, 87, of Charlotte, died May 2, 2001 at Houghton Lake.
Mrs. Landers was born in Charlotte, the daughter of Howard and Cathrine (Lightner) Clever. She was employed at Hayes Green Beach for 10 years.
She is survived by three daughters, Kay Mishler of Houghton Lake, Roxanne (Jim) Albaugh of Mulliken, and Sally (Allen) Cantine of Charlotte; brother-in-law, Gary Landers of Florida; 20 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda in 1995, husband Ben in 1977, son Howard in 1975, and son Jerry in 1935.
Funeral services were held May 5 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Pastor Donald Woolum officiating. Interment was at Benton Township Cemetery, Potterville.
