Leonard L. Larson
Leonard L. Larson, 82, of Charlotte, died Friday, Sept. 14, 2001 at Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Battle Creek.
Mr. Larson was born June 8, 1919 in Radcliffe, Iowa, the son of Martin and Louisa (Bly) Larson. He served in the U.S. Army as a medical technician during World War II, in the Pacific Theater. Mr. Larson worked for several years as an independent truck driver. He married Betty Richey on June 24, 1949.
He is survived by his wife, Betty; daughter, Beverly Boden of Potterville; son, Robert Larson; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and brothers, Leo Larson of Buckeye, Iowa, and Arnold Larson of California.
He was preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters.
Services and interment were held Sept. 19 at Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, with military honors.
Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. Arrangements were by Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue.
Earl F. Lauck
Earl F. Lauck, age 77 of Eaton Rapids, died Thursday, November 8, 2001 in Lansing. Earl was born February 28, 1924 in Wellsburg, West Virginia, the son of Robert and Cecelia (Black) Lauck. He was a veteran of WWII serving in the U.S. Army and was a Past Commander of the Eaton Rapids VFW Post #1283. Mr. Lauck retired from Pettit’s Hardware Store. Earl was preceded in death by his wife, Florence in January 2001 and his son, Harvey Swan in 1996.
Surviving are 4 daughters, Debbie (Richard) Collins of Alabama, Janis (Steve) Ambs of Onondaga, Jacki (Jim) Barnes, Tracey (Pat) Mahoney both of Eaton Rapids; 5 sons, Doug (Placida Lyn) of Las Vegas, Burt (Wanda), Curtis, Randy, and Fred (Kim) all of Eaton Rapids; 18 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; 4 brothers, Bobby, Dick (Maxine), Tommy (Doris), Howard (Margaret) all of West Virginia; 4 sisters, Margaret (Toss) Diserio, Betty (Ed) Trimmer, Dorothy Greene and Ruth (Ed) Stein all of West Virginia.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, November 10, 2001 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids, with Rev. Stephen Klink of the Community Christian Church officiating. Those desiring may make contributions to the Eaton Rapids Medical Center Foundation in memory of Earl Lauck.
Florence M. Lauck
Florence M. Lauck, age 76 of Eaton Rapids, died Sunday, January 14, 2001 in Lansing. Florence was born April 14, 1924, the daughter of Oscar Arthur and Viola (Hoover) Bunker. She was a member of the Monday Night Ladies Bowling League in Eaton Rapids and past president of the Eaton Rapids VFW Auxiliary. Florence was preceded in death by her first husband, Ivan Bateman; son, Harvey Swan; stepmother, Clorah Bunker; 2 sisters, Estina Disbrow, Lillian Darnell and stepbrother, Elmer Flaugher.
Surviving are her husband of 41 years, Earl F.; 4 daughters, Debbie (Richard) Collins of Alabama, Janice (Steve) Ambs of Onondaga, Jackie (Jim) Barnes, Tracy (Pat) Mahoney all of Eaton Rapids; 5 sons, Doug (Placida Lyn) Lauck of Florida, Bert (Wanda) Lauck, Curtis Lauck, Randy Lauck, Fred (Kim) Lauck all of Eaton Rapids; 18 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; 3 brothers, Daniel (Betty) Bunker of Williamston, Ruhl (Elaine) Bunker of Dansville, Ivan Bunker of Aurelius; 2 sisters, Carolyn (George) Hertzfeld of Jackson, Darla (Wayne) Tody of Traverse City; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 17, 2001, 3:00 p.m. at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids with Rev. Stephen Klink officiating. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 5-8 p.m. at the Funeral Home. Those desiring may make contributions to the Eaton Rapids Medical Center Foundations or the American Heart Association in memory of Florence Lauck.
Cynthia Lavengood
Cynthia “Arlin” Lavengood, 97, of Lansing, passed away Thursday, April 12, 2001.
Arlin had been living at the Grandma’s Pad Adult Foster Care Home during the last years of her life. Although small in stature, she was mighty in service to God. At the age of 17, Arlin accepted Christ as her Savior in an Evangelical church in Eureka. In 1931, she joined the First Church of the Nazarene in Lansing, where she worshipped and faithfully served in the teaching ministry for over 60 consecutive years. She had been a Sunday School teacher of third-grade boys, treasurer of the Missionary Society for 24 years, and served on two church boards. Her steadfast devotion to Christ also shines in her testimony:
“I could not live without the love, care and protection of my Heavenly Father. Jesus is real to me and the Hold Spirit is my guide each day! He is my all in all.” Her favorite scripture was Mathew 10:29-32, and her favorite song was “Living for Jesus.” Many children and adults have been influenced tremendously and can bear witness to her life as their Christian teacher and friend.
She is survived by her sister, Irma Overmyer of Toledo, Ohio, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Kenneth Lavengood, who died recently.
Funeral services were held April 16 at Gorsline-Runiciman Co. Lansing Chapel, with Rev. Dr. E. Donald King, pastor of the First Church of the Nazarene, officiating.
Interment was at Maple Grove Cemetery, Charlotte.
Kenneth E. Lavengood
Kenneth E. Lavengood, 85, of Holt, died Sunday, March 25, 2001.
Mr. Lavengood was born Dec. 20, 1915 in Winamac, Ind., the son of Joseph and Anna Alberta (Stepp) Lavengood. He was a State Farm Insurance Agent in Albion for 26 years, retiring in 1978. He served three years in Army Air Corps during World War II.
He was a life member of: Mural Lodge #14, Albion Chapter, Albion Counsel, and Charlotte Commandery #37. He was also a member of the American Legion in Albion, the VFW in Albion, Royal Order of Moose in Sparta, Order of Eastern Star in Albion, and Central United Methodist Church in Lansing.
He is survived by a daughter, Anita Cook of Grand Rapids; son, Gary Lavengood of South Bend, Ind.; sisters, C. Arlin Lavengood of Lansing, and Irma Overmyer of Toledo, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Delma Lorene (Steinman) in 1998.
Funeral services were held March 31 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Rev. John Boley officiating. Interment was at West Carmel Cemetery, Charlotte.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Verna E. Lawrence
Verna E. (Binning) Lawrence, 87, of Charlotte, formerly of Alton, Ill., died Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001 at Eaton Manor Nursing Home in Charlotte.
Mrs. Lawrence was born Aug. 24, 1914 in East Madison, Ill., the daughter of Roscoe and Rebecca (Shaw) Snider. She had been a Charlotte resident for 34 years, coming from Illinois, and had been employed in the Housekeeping Department of Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, retiring in 1978.
She is survived by four children, Gerald (Betty) Binning of Charlotte, Clemeth (Barbara) Binning of East Alton, Ill., Connie (John) Clark of Cottage Hills, Ill., and Ronnie (Shirley) Binning of Potterville; 13 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren; special companion, Richard Haite of Charlotte; twin brother, Virgil Snider of Affton, Ill.; three half sisters, Josephine Cathorall of Bethalto, Ill., Henrietta Fitzgerald of Moro, Ill., and Virginia Wiekhorst of Port Charlotte, Fla.; and a half brother, Thomas Keiser of Moro, Ill.
She was preceded in death by husbands, Everett Binning and David Lawrence; two sons, Richard Binning and Vernon Lawrence; two daughters, Joyce and Sharon Binning; and a brother, Bill Keiser.
Funeral services were held Oct. 18 at Elias-Smith Funeral Home, Alton, Ill., with Rev. I.T. Beard officiating. Interment was at Upper Alton Cemetery, Alton.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. Local arrangements were by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Virginia R. Lea
Virginia Rose Lea, 80, of Charlotte, died Monday, Dec. 10, 2001 after an extended illness.
Mrs. Lea was born Sept. 17, 1921, the daughter of Max Nye and Dorothy Kirk Robinson. She was a life resident of Charlotte, a 1939 graduate of Charlotte High School and had been employed by the State of Michigan Treasury Department, retiring in 1984. She was a member of the State Employees Retirement Association, a member and past officer of the Eaton County Historical Association and a member of the Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church and its Ruth Circle.
She is survived by a daughter, Rosemary Lea of Lansing.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Lea, who was superintendent of Charlotte’s Maple Hill Cemetery for 46 years, in which he was assisted by his wife.
Cremation has taken place and committal services will be held at a later date.

Orval H. Lee
Orval Howard Lee, 66, of Charlotte, died Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001.
Mr. Lee was born Nov. 3, 1935 in Coldwater Township, the son of Howard and Lavina (Champlain) Lee. He had been employed by Diamond Reo, for 15 years and was a well-known regular at McDonald’s in Charlotte. He served with the U.S. Air Force, volunteered for Charlotte athletic programs for 18 years, and attended New Hope Community Church in Charlotte.
He is survived by Florence Lee of Charlotte; daughter, Jodi McLean (fiancée Rex VanGuilder) of Olivet; son, Jay Howard Lee of Charlotte; daughter, Sue Ann Lee of Charlotte; grandsons, Matthew McLean and James Lee; granddaughter, Christine Wilson; brother, Sterling (Lora) Lee of Grand Ledge; sister, Pat (Leo) Youngs of Fowler; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Dec. 7 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Rev. Randy Royston officiating. Interment was at Hillside Cemetery, Kalamo Township.
