Lean G. Lynd
Lena Grace (Bennett) Lynd, 94, of Delton, passed away Dec. 7, 2001.
Mrs. Lynd was born Jan. 5, 1907 in Vermontville Township, the daughter of Warren and Ruth (Hallenbeck) Bennett. On July 12, 1926 in Charlotte, she married Lester Lynd; her preceded her in death Feb. 14, 1979. She farmed and was active in the Vermontville and Charlotte area for 20 years. She was a life member of Order of Eastern Star Kalamo 399, and a member of the Congregational Church of Vermontville. She moved to Delton with her husband in 1965, where she was active in the Baptist Church, Dorcas Society and Boy Scouts. For the last five years she resided at Thornapple Manor in Hastings, where she was president of the Residents Council. She also played an active role on the Nutrition Committee as well as other special activities.
She is survived by children, Pat (Cleo) Prescott of Vermontville, Robert (Joyce) Lynd of Charlotte, Margaret (Fred) Winans of Phoenix; daughter-in-law, Sharon Lynd of Delton; 16 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; sisters, Margaret Coltson of Battle Creek and Elizabeth (Al) Huizenga of Hastings; sister-in-law, Grace Bennett of Allegan and Louise (Howard) Philo of Port Richey, Fla.; and brother-in-law, Rene Julierat of Albion.
She was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Lynd on Feb. 14, 1996; brothers, Wayne, Phillip, Don and Russell Bennett; and a sister, Esther Julierat.
Memorial services were held Dec. 15 at Williams-Gores Funeral Home, Delton, with Fr. David Hustwick officiating. A private interment was held at Bellevue Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice. Arrangements were by Williams-Gores Funeral Home, Delton.
David C. Lyons
David C. Lyons, 67, of Charlotte, passed away July 1, 2001 after a battle with cancer.
Mr. Lyons was born Oct. 20, 1933 to John and Helen Lyons. He served in death U.S. Navy, was a journeyman plasterer, served as an Ingham County sheriff’s deputy and retired from the Michigan Department of Transportation after 33 years. He was also a former member of the Michigan National Guard and the Eaton County 4-H Fair Board. He earned his solo pilot’s license in 1996.
He is survived by his wife, Sue (Peltier); daughters, Deb (Larry) Nakfoor of Grand Ledge and Shantel (Jim) LoFiego of Grand Rapids; son, Rick (Debbie) Lyons of Florida; sisters, Elaine Fabiano of Lansing, Pat Gray of Mason, and Kathleen (Steve) Edwards of North Carolina; and grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Memorial services were held July 4 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Father Denis Spitzley officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to Heartland Hospice or Eaton Community Hospice. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home, Inc., Charlotte.
John Jack “Bobby” McCook
John Jack “Bobby” McCook, age 52 of Eaton Rapids, formerly of Lansing, has made his journey to heavenly Home, to be with the “Big Guy”, our Savior, Jesus Christ on Friday, May 4, 2001.John was born in Lansing on December 31, 1948. He served his country in the Navy during the Viet Nam War and had been employed at the Mejiers Distributing Center in Lansing for the past 21 years. John moved to Eaton Rapids in 1989. His kind and gentle nature, his laughter and humor and his green and white spirit will be remembered and missed by those who knew and loved him.
From his Heavenly Home, he is watching over his family, whom includes his wife, Toni (Poppe) McCook; 6 children, Jennifer (McCook) Stepper, Jacqueline McCook, Brandi McCook, Joanna McCook, John McCook, and Melissa McCook; father and mother John and Elsie McCook of lake Odessa; brother, Jim; sisters Judy and Joanna; 6 grandchildren, Joshua, Jessica, Dion, Stephanie, Mandy, Matthew; many nieces and nephews and friends.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, May 8, 2001 at 2 p.m. from the Eaton Rapids Church of the Nazarene with Rev. Dallas McFarland officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery in Lansing. Pallbearers will be Don Poppe Jr., Don Poppe III, Danny Crampton, Nick Caccadan, John Monroe and Randy Monroe. Memorial contributions may be made to the Eaton Rapids Church of the Nazarene on behalf of John and his family. Arrangements were by the Skinner Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids.
Joyce C. McElrath
Joyce Carroll McElrath, 70, of Dimondale died Sunday, Feb.11, 2001.
She was born July 11, 1930 in Lansing, the daughter of Floyd Allen and Ethelene Nimphie.
She is survived by daughters, Patti McElrath of Potterville, Peggy (Rodney) Sellen of Bellevue, and Penny Steketee of Haslett; son, Robert (Vickie) Lumbert; and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Feb. 13 at Prey Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Rev. Darwin Kuhl officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Lawrence Hospice House. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
Ruth Elizabeth McFarland
Ruth Elizabeth McFarland, age 87 of Eaton Rapids, died Monday, June 18, 2001 at her residence. She was born December 1,1913, in St. Paul, Minnesota, the daughter of Robert and Margaret (Ryan) Stroud. Mrs. McFarland was a 1931 graduate of Manistique High School, she had attended a Business College, and during World War II, worked as a Meter Maid in Chicago. In 1941 she worked for the State of Michigan, at the Capital, for the Secretary of State, as a Stenographer. In 1947, she left her job to raise her family. Preceding in her death were her parents and a brother, Robert Stroud.
Surviving are her husband of 60 years, Samuel; 3 children, Mary (Michael) Cline of Big Rapids, Laurie (William) Kipp of Nashville, MI, and Samuel (Susan) McFarland of Ada, MI; 8 grandchildren, Michael (Shannon) Cline, Christopher (Machelle) Cline, Nicole Kipp, A. Elizabeth (Martin) Lyons, Shane McFarland, Amanda McFarland, Kyle McFarland and Anna McFarland; 2 great-grandchildren, Katelyn Cline and Amarra Lyons; sister, Mary (Maurice) Goodreau and brother, John Stroud; several nieces and nephews.
At Mrs. McFarland’s request, there will be no funeral service. For those desiring, a memorial contribution may be made to the Eaton Community Hospice at 313 Lansing St., Charlotte, MI 48813, in memory of Ruth E. McFarland. Arrangements were made by the Skinner Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids.
Harold H. McKenzie
Mac, age 86 of Clearwater, FL formerly of Charlotte, died September 14, 2001 in Clearwater, FL. Harold was born August 26, 1915 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the son of Alexander B. and Mea Irene (Ball) McKenzie. He was preceded in death by his wife, Letha (Gemalsky) in 1975. Mr. McKenzie was a life member and 32 degree Mason of the Charlotte Masonic Lodge #120 F&AM and retired from General Motors in 1976 as a tool and die maker. He was a very loving husband and father and was always there if we needed him. Harold always looked forward to going to Spider Lake every year for 2 weeks when Dick and Dottie were small along with Ella, Jack and all the girls. Harold was in the Bath School disaster when it was blown up.
Surviving are his daughters, Dorothy M. Getter of Holt; son, Richard McKenzie of Utica; 2 grandchildren, Troy and Tami Getter of Holt; 2 great-grandchildren, Kyle Getter of Holt and Aaron Getter of Charlotte.
Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, October 4, 2001, 2 p.m., at Rosehill Cemetery, Eaton Rapids. Arrangements by the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids.
Neil McLaughlin
Dr. Neil McLaughlin, 91, of Indian River, formerly of Charlotte and Vermontville, died August 4, 2001 at Cheboygan Community Memorial Hospital.
Dr. McLaughlin was born July 11, 1910 in Vermontville, where he was also raised. He attended Michigan Technological University and Olivet College, and graduated in 1933 from the University of Michigan as a doctor of dental surgery. Dr. McLaughlin practiced dentistry in Vermontville, Nashville, and Charlotte until his retirement in 1975. He taught himself to be computer literate, which remained his passion. He was instrumental in starting the Vermontville Lions Club, was a life member of the Eastern Star and Masonic Lodge, an originator of the Vermontville Maple Syrup Festival, and a longtime member of the Vermontville School Board. He was active in church, where his love of music was shared by playing the piano and organ and singing in the choir. He was a deacon and trustee in the Bradenton, Fla., and Vermontville churches, and a lifelong member of the Congregational church, most recently of the First Congregational Church of Cheboygan.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Lorraine Helen (Hinz); daughters, Margaret Lee (Roy) Sjoberg of Indian River and Judith Anne Waterman of Euless, Texas; sons, James Neil (Sara) McLaughlin of Farmington, N.M. and Fredric Lee McLaughlin of Lansing; five grandchildren, two step grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Memorial services were held August 7 at the First Congregational Church, Cheboygan, with Rev. Edwin Ramaly officiating.

Rickie Lee McMann
Rickie Lee McMann, age 50 of Eaton Rapids, died Saturday, November 24, 2001 in Eaton Rapids. Rickie was born January 1, 1951 in Eaton Rapids. He was formerly employed with Motor Wheels as a press operator and currently employed with McMann Dockside Services. Rickie was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the Combat Engineers Unit. Preceding him in death was his father, Alvin Charles McMann, Sr. in 1984 and his brother Alvin Charles McMann, Jr. in 1967.
Surviving are his daughter, Jennifer (Desmond) Dan of Oklahoma; son, Joe (Mandy) McMann of Oklahoma; sister-in-law, Judy (Lloyd) Switzer of Perry; 3 grandchildren, Desmond, Jr. and Brenden Dan, Sydni Re’Ann McMann; Mother, Vera B. (DeWaters) McMann of Eaton Rapids; brother, Leslie (Beatrice) McMann of Eaton Rapids; 2 sisters, Vicki Lynn (David) Mathews of Tennessee, Barbara Richardson of Eaton Rapids and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Friday, November 30, 2001 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids with Rev. Stephen Klink officiating. Interment followed at Rosehill Cemetery. Casket bearers were Dan McMann, Randy Richardson, Rocky Ackerman, David Mathews, Chad McMann and Jason McMann.
Scott N. McPhall
Scott Norman McPhall, 39, of Phoenix, Ariz. formerly of Potterville, died Friday, Sept. 21, 2001.
Mr. McPhall was born March 23, 1962 in Hillsdale, the son of Lyle and Iris (Michael) McPhall. He had formerly attended Eaton Rapids High School, and had worked as a carpenter in this area for 17 years. He lived in Phoenix, Ariz., for the past three years.
He is survived by his fiancée, Lisa Mitchell of Phoenix, Ariz.; two sons, Brent McPhall of Phoenix, Ariz., and Chad McPhall of Charlotte; mother Iris McPhall of Potterville; two brothers, Alan (Sue) McPhall of Bath and Randy McPhall of Stockbridge; and several nieces, nephews, and special friends in Charlotte and Potterville.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Brent Edwin McPhall; sister, Sheryl Imler; and father, Lyle McPhall.
Funeral services were held Sept. 28 at Skinner Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids, with Rev. Tom Evans of the First Rosehill Cemetery, Eaton Rapids. Pallbearers were Mike VanFossen, Bret Miller, Lance Jones, Ken Ripley, Brandon Bunker and Tom Sweet. Honorary bearer was Jerry Baker.
