Donald H. Peterson
Donald H. Peterson, 76, of Charlotte, died Sunday, June 3, 2001.
Mr. Peterson was born April 3, 1925 in Lincoln Park, the son of George and Mable (Hubbard) Peterson. He was an electrician for Ford and GM for many years. He was a retired member of the UAW and DAV, and 3rd Armored Division. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theatre.
He is survived by his wife, Marie Louise (Zenner); daughters, Marie Ann (Brian) Callahan of Boston and Michelle Kay Peterson of Charlotte; and grandchildren, Shane, Kendra and Brian Jarret. A scripture service was held June 5 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or Eaton County Humane Society. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Helmer R. Petersen
Helmer R. Petersen, 93, of Olivet, died Sunday, May 6, 2001 at the Tendercare of Marshall Nursing Home after an extended illness.
Mr. Petersen was born in Mount Pleasant, the son of Soren and Clara (Hansen) Petersen and had been an Olivet resident since 1945. He was a 1925 graduate of Greenville High School, had attended Olivet College in the 1930’s, where he studied music, and attended Davenport Business College in Grand Rapids. He married Larida Scott on July 13,1940 in Decatur. He was an accountant, and had been employed as an assistant purchasing agent for Gibson Refrigerator Co. in Greenville. He was an accomplished violinist. Mr. Petersen was a member of the Olivet Congregational Church, where he served as treasurer for many years, a member and past president of the Olivet Lions Club, a former Olivet city councilman, and a member of the Phi Alpha Pi fraternity at Olivet College. He is survived by his wife, Larida; four sons, Michael (Marcia) of Ames, Iowa, Stephen (Janice) of Decatur, Francis of Hillsdale and John (Lisa) of San Antonio, Texas; 12 grandchildren; and one sister, Agnes Rogers of Tuscon, Ariz. Funeral services were held May 10 at the Olivet Congregational Church, with Rev. Roy Backus officiating. Interment was at Keeler Cemetery, Van Buren County. Memorial contributions may be made to the Olivet Congregational Church or the Olivet Lions Club. Arrangements by Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel, Charlotte.
Twila L. Place
Twila L. Place, age 89 of Charlotte, died Thursday, October 11, 2001 at the St. Lawrence/ Dimondale Center. She was born December 8, 1911 in Springport, the daughter of Roy and Ethel (Sherman) Greenslade. Mrs. Place, for many years, was an Avon Representative and worked as a Realtor for 15 years for Sarah Bucher Realty in Eaton Rapids. A very active member if the Brookfield/ Eaton United Methodist Church, she was a past member of the board of trustees. Preceding her in death were her husband, Howard; 2 children, Herrold Place, and Zelmadene McHaney; grandson, Jeffery Scott Place; 2 brothers, LaVerne Greenslade and Lester Ford.
Surviving are 8 children, Norma Jean (Charles) Cribley of Eaton Rapids, Robert (Darlene) Place of Lakeview, Phillip (Laurie) Place of Marshall, Merlyn (Sandi) Place of Olivet, Ronald (Laura) Place of Battle Creek, Daryl (Shirley) Place of Olivet, Shelia (Richard) Heisler of Olivet and Kevin (Judy) Place of Olivet; daughter-in-law, Dora Place of Eaton Rapids and son-in-law, Jim McHaney of Springport; 41 grandchildren, 66 great-grandchildren and 17 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, October 15th from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the Brookfield United Methodist Church in memory of Twila L. Place.
Robert E. Polhamus Sr.
Robert E. “Bob” Polhamus Sr., 75, of Union City, Tenn., died Nov. 18, 2001 at his home. Mr. Polhamus was born in May 1926 in Lansing, the son of James and Mary (Salter) Polhamus. He married the former Martha Sue Morris on Aug. 8, 1975; she survives. He was a retired supervisor for the Ashby Saw Mill in Fulton, Tenn., where he was employed for 20 years. He was a member of Johnson Grove Baptist Church near South Fulton, Tenn., and Jones-Walker Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #4682 in Union City, Tenn. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran. He is survived by daughter, Laura Polhamus of Charlotte; three sons, Robert (Jackie) Polhamus Jr. of Tecumseh, Doug (Christine) Polhamus of Eaton Rapids and Edward Polhamus of Charlotte; step-daughter, Robin (Jacky) Baker of Savannah, Tenn.; step-son, Randy (Judy) Stroud of Union City, Tenn.; five sister, Arlene Frith of Lansing, Mary Heath of Eagle and Ester Hale, Betty Polhamus and Terie Holman, all of Charlotte; five brothers, John Polhamus of Lyons, James Polhamus of Charlotte, Eugene Polhamus of Paris, Jay Homan of North Adams and Tom Homan of Auburn, Wash.; nine grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Services were held Nov. 24 at White-Ranson Funeral Home, Union City, Tenn., with Rev. Robert Joe Johnson officiating. Interment was at Obion County Memorial Gardens in Tennessee.
Forest E. Potter
Forest E. potter, 89, formerly of Charlotte and Woodland, passed away Saturday afternoon, June 9, 2001.
Mr. Potter was born May 2, 1912 in Hastings the son of Clifford and Elsie (Higdon) Potter. He graduated from Hastings High School in 1931 and then completed an agricultural short course at Michigan State University. Together with his brother, Donald, he owned the Dowagiac Bottling Works from 1938 to 1949. He later worked as a toolmaker for the E.W. Bliss Company in Hastings, and was proud to be a farmer. Mr. Potter was a past master with the Woodland Masonic Lodge and had been a long-time member of the Woodland United Methodist Church. In 1938, he married L. Jean Jackson; she preceded him in death July 6, 1985. He married Katheryn Braden in 1987; she preceded him in death in 1995.
He is survived by sons, Jack (Inez) Potter of Muskegon, Thomas (Linda) Potter of Bellevue, and Alan (Julie) Potter of Parma; step sons, Ronald (Connie) Braden and Terry Braden, both of Charlotte, and James (Carol) Braden of Ft. Myers; niece Jill (Donald) Lea of Charlotte; and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Gerald and Donald Potter; and sisters, Dorothy Fox and Elizabeth Potter. Funeral services were held June 13 at Koops Funeral Chapel, Lake Odessa. Interment was at Woodland Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to the ALS Foundation or the Woodland United Methodist Church. Arrangements were by Koops Funeral Chapel, Lake Odessa.
Gordon A. Potter
Gordon A. Potter, age 73 of Springport, died Sunday, January 21, 2001 at his residence. Gordon was born February 17, 1927 in Holt, MI, the son of john R. and Agnes Potter. He retired from Federal Drop Forge and enjoyed working at Felpausch in Eaton Rapids during his retirement. Gordon was preceded in death by his daughter, Rosalena in 1975.
Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Roberta; 2 daughters, Linda L. Losey and Wanda Driscoll both of Springport; son, Bruce (Evangeline) Potter of Eaton Rapids; 7 grandchildren, Kelly Christopher and Jeffrey Losey, Anne and Spencer Potter, Randy Lape, Autumn Driscoll; 4 great-grandchildren; 3 brothers and 3 sisters.
Funeral services will be held in Wednesday, January 24, 2:00 p.m. at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids with Rev. Jack Fugate officiating. Interment will follow at Rosehill Cemetery, Eaton Rapids. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 1-3 & 6-8 p.m. at the Funeral Home. Those desiring may make contributions to the Eaton Rapids Medical Center Foundation in memory of Gordon Potter.
June A. Potter
June A. Potter, 90, of Bellevue, died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2001 at Carveth Village in Middleville.
Mrs. Potter was born March 24, 1911 in Kalamazoo, the daughter of Charles and Julia (Barry) Brown. She spent time growing up in Hastings, and later in Vermontville and Nashville. She graduated from Nashville High School in 1930, and on April 4, 1931 married Charles Wendell Potter; he preceded her in death in December 1977. From 1937 to 1967 she enjoyed being a homemaker on their family dairy farm. For 34 years, Mrs. Potter looked Forward to and enjoyed spending winters in Donna, Texas, where she played bingo and cards. She also liked reading and crossword puzzles and belonging to the Mayo-Evans Birthday Club.
She is survived by daughters, Nianne Jarrard of Nashville and Vanessa (Larry) Carpenter of Bellevue; sons, Charles Potter of Huntington Beach, Calif., nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Wendell Potter.
Graveside services were held Nov. 12 at Lakeview Cemetery, Nashville, with Rev. Gail Patterson officiating. Memorial Donations may be made to the Nashville Putnam Library, Maple Valley Scholarship Fund or Barry Community Hospice. Arrangements were by Maple Valley Chapel, Nashville.
Cedi Prater
Cedi Prater, 85, of Springport, died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001 at Eaton Rapids Medical Center after an extended illness. Mr. Prater was born July 4, 1916 in Floyd County, Ky., the son of Robert and Lula (Whitacer) Prater, and has been a Springport area resident for 55 years, coming from Kentucky. He had been employed at Hayes-Albion Corp., retiring in 1970 after 33 years of service. Mr. Prater was a member of the Grace Freewill Baptist Church of Albion, and enjoyed fishing and hunting.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ruth (Woods) Prater; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; brother, Clyde Prater of Olivet; and sister, Nancy Manual of Prestonsburg, Ky. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Leora Newsome on June 9, 1999; four brothers, Levi, Press, George and Charley Prater; and one sister, Mandy Prater.
Funeral services were held Dec. 17 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Rev. Earl Martin officiating. Interment was at North Clarence (Hunt) Cemetery, Clarence Township. Memorial contributions may be made to Grace Freewill Baptist Church in Albion. Arrangements were by Burkhead- Green Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Dorene Pratt
Dorene Pratt, 81, of Charlotte, died Saturday, June 9, 2001 at Moore’s Adult Foster Care Home after a long illness.
Mrs. Pratt was born Aug. 21, 1919 in Eaton County, the daughter of Leon and Zella (Williams) Loveland. She worked as a bookkeeper and cashier for A & P Stores. She enjoyed sewing for her family, crafts, traveling, and her home by the lake in Cadillac.
She is survived by daughters, Brenda (Jerry) Heisler of Olivet and Linda (William) Newland of Bellevue; four grandchildren; brother, Dale Loveland of Lake Odessa; sisters, Theda Devenbaugh and Lois Thompson, both of Charlotte, and Fran Carpenter of Potterville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two infant children, and brothers Don Loveland and Eugene “Dutch” Loveland.
Funeral services were held June 12 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Rev. Arthur Salisbury officiating. Interment was at Gresham Cemetery, Charlotte.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the Charlotte 4-H Sewing Club; envelopes are available at the funeral home.
