Donald W. Neil
Donald Wesley Neil, 85, of Charlotte, formerly of Livonia, died Tuesday, July 3, 2001.
Mr. Neil was born April 30, 1916 in Detroit, the son of James and Louise (Williamson) Neil. He retired from Livonia Public Schools as a maintenance supervisor. He was a member of the St. Mary Catholic Church and owned a cabin for 24 years at Lake James. He was a former member of the St. Priscilla Catholic Church in Livonia for 32 years.
He is survived by wife of 62 years, Eleanor (Brown); children, James (Diane) Neil of Houston, Texas, Barbara (Leonard) Bochenek and Marge McKeon, both of Charlotte, Jack (Pat) Neil of Tecumseh, Pat (Cal) Underwood of Sarasota, Fla., and Fred (Cathy) Neil of Brighton; 25 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren; sister, Lucille Petry of Lafayette, Ind.; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Ward of Farmington Hills and Marie (Nick) Aninos of Port Richey, Fla.; and brother-in-law, Robert (Liz) Brown of Tucson, Ariz.
Funeral services were held July 6 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Charlotte, with Father Denis Spitzley officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.
Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home, Inc., Charlotte.
Marvin J. Nelson
Marvin J. Nelson, 96, of Charlotte, died June 2, 2001.
Mr. Nelson was born Dec. 19, 1904 in Sidney Township, Montcalm County, the son of Albert and Marie (Pedersen) Nelson. He attended Muskrat County School and Greenville High School, and graduated from Sheridan High School. He also attended Ferris Institute. Mr. Nelson married Hazel (Eriksen) on June 25, 1929. He was a county abstractor in the Montcalm County Abstract Office in Stanton for 25 years before purchasing the Eaton County Abstract Company in Charlotte in 1947. He was joined in partnership by his son in 1958 and sold the business in 1986 to First American Title Company. He and Hazel moved to Independence Village in Grand Ledge in 1999. Mr. Nelson has held memberships in Michigan Land Title Association, American Land Title Association, Charlotte Lion’s Club, Charlotte Yacht Club, Michigan Tree Farmer’s Association, and was a Lifetime Mason. He was also active in boy scouting. He and Hazel were charter members of Peace Lutheran Church, where he served as treasurer for many years.
He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Hazel; son, Roger (Jane) Nelson of Duck Lake; daughter, Jeanette (Fred) Kogge of Hastings; grandchildren, Steven (Sumire) Kogge, Scott (Rose) Kogge, Sandra (Gary) Ragan, Stuart (Kathie) Kogge, Michael (Kathleen) Nelson, Judy (Matthew) Wineinger and Robin Nelson; step-grandchildren, Sarah and Sam Kellogg, and, Andrew and Derek King; great-grandchildren, Lauren Kogge, Katherine and Erik Ragan, Kyle and Connor Kogge, Abby and Megan Wineinger, and Olivia Nelson; sister, Evelyn Strobridge of Greenville; sister-in-law, Frances Eriksen of Grand Rapids and Erma Sheaha of Santa Barbara, Calif.; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and their wives, Arnold (Donna) Nelson and Clifford (Leona) Nelson; brothers-in-law, Elmer Strobridge, Peter Sheaha and Lester Eriksen.
Funeral services were held June 5 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Pastor Noel Hall-Neimann officiating. Interment was at South Sidney Cemetery, Montcalm County.
Memorial contributions may be made to Peace Lutheran Church or Hayes Green Beach Hospital. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Wayne Ernest Newberry
Wayne Ernest Newberry, age 59 of Eaton Rapids, died Saturday, June 16, 2001 at his residence. He was born December 10, 1941 in Big Rapids, the son of Leslie and Eva (Troupe) Newberry. Wayne was a Tool & Die Maker for Barnes Aerospace in Lansing. He was a member of the Moose Lodge #288 in Lansing and was preceded in death by his parents.
Surviving are his wife of 32 years, Pennie; 7 children, Charles Newberry, Wanda Newberry, Eva (Don) Clother, Melody (Richard) Sawdy, Dennis and Heather Hurd, and Keith Barber; 10 grandchildren, Mackenzie, Trent, Felicia, Patience, Miranda, Ty, Trista, Tia, Kelly and Justin; father & mother-in-law, Charles & Wanda Head; 8 sisters, Anna Pearl (James) Westover, Patricia Taylor, Donna (Mike) Jones, Terry (Jeff) Morey, Val (Jack) Becker, Bobbie Wells, Kaye (John) Mueller and Charla (Craig) Boatman; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, June 20, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids. Visitation will be Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Donald B. Newland
Donald B. Newland, 86, of Bellevue, formerly of Charlotte, died Monday, May 28, 2001. Mr. Newland was born Oct. 20, 1914. He was a retired meat cutter at Carter’s in Charlotte. He and his wife Dorothy owned Newland’s Grocery in Charlotte for many years. He was a 75-year member of the First Baptist Church, and still attended regularly. He was a member of the Eaton County Buck Club, and looked forward to the twice-yearly meetings. He was a life member of the Masonic Lodge and Charlotte Commandery K.T. He was a past member of the Lions Club and Charlotte Charlotte Chamber of Commerce.
He is survived by two sons, William (Linda) Newland of Bellevue and Robert (Charla) Newland of Sewell, N.J.; one daughter, Nancy Jewell of Delton; one sister, Janette Frey of Front Royal, Va.; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy in 1987. Memorial services will be held Sunday, July 1 at 2:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 1110 South Cochran, Charlotte.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church Scholarship Endowment Fund, 1110 S. Cochran, Charlotte.
Mary Ellen Norris
Mary Ellen Norris, age 98 of Eaton Rapids, died Saturday, June 23, 2001 at the Eaton Rapids Medical Center. She was born June 3, 1903 in Aurelius Township, the daughter of Daniel and Hattie (Hall) Purcell. Mrs. Norris was a retired Custodian for Green Bay Foods in Eaton Rapids. She was preceded in death by her husband Iven in 1973; twin sons, Daniel and David, sons, Leo and John Norris and daughter, June Ellen Norris; sister, Maude Marquardt; brother, John Purcell.
Surviving are 7 children, Lucille Green of Eaton Rapids, LeRoy Norris of Charlotte, Iven “Ike” (Janet) Norris of Onondaga, Oma (Raymond) Hollinworth of Kalamazoo, Don Norris of LaGrange, IN, Duane “Duke” Norris of Eaton Rapids and Ronald “Ronnie” (Beulah) Norris of Lansing; 29 grandchildren; 61 great-grandchildren; 47 great-great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-great-grandchildren; sister, Margaret Glassbrooke of Dansville; several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be Tuesday, June 26th at 3 p.m. at the Greenwood Cemetery in Aurelius Township. For those desiring a memorial contribution may be made to the Eaton Rapids Medical Center in memory of Mary Ellen Norris. Arrangements were made through the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids.
Patricia Anne Norris
Sgt. Patricia Anne Norris, U.S. Army, age 27 of Fort Campbell, KY formerly of Eaton Rapids, died Sunday, June 10, 2001 as a result of a motorcycle accident in Tennessee. She was born June 1, 1974 in Lansing. Patty was a Sergeant in the U.S. Army, enlisting in 1992 and was currently serving in the 584 Combat Support Maintenance at Fort Campbell in Kentucky. She graduated from Eaton Rapids High School Class of 1992 and was an animal lover.
Surviving are her son, Chandler Nelson of Texas; mother, Sharon McCarrick of Eaton Rapids; father, David (Ronda) Norris of Stanton; brother, Eric (Dana) McCarrick of Springport; sister, Valerie (Jeff) Weeks of Eaton Rapids; 2 stepsisters, Tiffany and Sara; grandmother, Verna McCarrick of Eaton Rapids; grandfather, Leroy Norris of Charlotte; great-grandmother, Mary Norris of Eaton Rapids; aunts, uncles, nephew, niece, cousins and many close personal friends including Jeni McVay and Wendy Whipple.
Funeral services were held on Monday, June 18, 2001 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids with Pastor Tom Evans of the Eaton Rapids First United Methodist Church officiating. Interment followed at Maple Grove Cemetery, Mason. Those desiring may make contributions to the Humane Society, 7095 W. Grand River, Lansing, in memory of Patricia A. Norris.
Richard J. Norton
Richard J. Norton, 76, of Battle Creek, formerly of Nashville, died Sunday, Sept. 2, 2001 at the Battle Creek Health System.
Mr. Norton was born June 1, 1925, in Battle Creek, the son of Maurice & Ruby (Mayo) Norton and attended Battle Creek Schools. He spent his working career as a truck driver for the Behnke Trucking Company. He had many friends and was well known at the Battle Creek restaurant owned by “Roger the Chef.”
He is survived by his brother Donald (Marianne) Norton of Battle Creek and sister Barbara Hart, also of Battle Creek.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Robert Norton.
Funeral services were held Sept. 6, at Wilcox Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of ones choice. Arrangements were by Maple Valley Chapel, Nashville.
Richard L. Oberlin
Richard Lee Oberlin, 65, of Fredericksburg, Texas, passed away Tuesday, May 15, 2001 at his residence.
He is survived by his wife, Gwen Wilbur Oberlin of Fredericksburg; three daughters, six sons and their spouses; Carrie and Jason Roemer of Austin, Texas, Lisa and Michael Clore of Battle Creek, Ronald and Jennifer Oberlin of Bear Lake, Robert Oberlin of Interlochen, Dian and Brad Brummette, and Mark and Missy Hisler, all of Charlotte, Richard Jr. and Kandi Oberlin, Phillip and Kelli Oberlin, and James and Jodi Oberlin, all of Eaton Rapids; 26 grandchildren; sisters, brother and their spouses: Sandra “Sandy” Duepree of Barryton, Stephen and June Oberlin of Marshall, and Sally and Brian Geisenhauer of Bath.
Memorial services were held May 19 in the chapel of the Schaetter Funeral Home, Fredericksburg, Texas, with Rev. Jeff Carpenter officiating.
A memorial service will be held Friday, May 25 at 2 p.m. at the Eaton Rapids Wesleyan Church.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Hill County Memorial Hospital Hospice, the American Cancer Society, or to the charity of one’s choice. Arrangements were by Schaetter Funeral Home, Inc., Fredericksburg, Texas.
