Joyce Delores Park

Joyce Delores Park, age 75 of Eaton Rapids, died Sunday, March 18, 2001 at the Eaton Manor Nursing Home in Charlotte. She was born January 10, 1926 in Kenosha, Wisconsin, the daughter of Harry and Hattie (Greening) Ball. Joyce was a member of the First Congregational Church in Eaton Rapids, the Mizpah Guild and a member of the Eaton Rapids Hospital Auxiliary. Preceded her in death were her husband, Dr. Ty Park, on October 29, 1997 and a brother, James Ball in 1998.

Surviving are 3 sons, Douglas (Tena) Park of Eaton Rapids, Dennis Park of Roseville, CA and Dr. David (Dr. Marilyn Gilbreath) Park of Ukiah, CA; 4 grandchildren, Trisha (Paul) Brady, Paul Park, Elizabeth Park and Justin Park; one great-granddaughter, Kathleen Brady; brother, Richard (Arlene) Ball; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Thursday, March 22nd at 1 p.m. from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with Rev. Dr. David D’Arcy of the First Congregational Church, officiating. Burial will follow in the Rosehill Cemetery in Eaton Rapids. Visitation will be Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home. For those desiring, a memorial contribution may be made to either the First Congregational Church or the Eaton Rapids Medical Center in memory of Joyce D. Park.

Wayne Woodrow Parsons, Sr.

Wayne Woodrow Parsons, Sr., age 87 of Eaton Rapids, went to be with the Lord on Monday, May 7, 2001. He was born August 22, 1913 in Spring Arbor, the son of Tom and Alma Agatha (Boatman) Parsons. Mr. Parsons was a retired Eaton Rapids School employee, farmer and carpenter. He would do anything for anybody. Wayne was preceded in death by his wife Margaret Maxine and brother, George Parsons.

Surviving are 4 sons, Wayne (Linda), Gayle (Shirley) Dean, Thomas (Penny) Parsons all of Eaton Rapids; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; 1 sister, Marvelmae Steele of Eaton Rapids and caregiver, Gary Newborn of Eaton Rapids.

Funeral services were held Friday, May 11, at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids with Pastor Jack Fugate officiating. Interment followed at Rosehill Cemetery.

Jay E. Patterson

Jay Edward Patterson, 82, of Potterville, died Friday, June 22, 2001 in Charlotte.

Mr. Patterson was born July 9, 1918 in Grand Rapids, the son of Guy and Alyida (Jasperse) Patterson. He was employed by Michigan Bell in 1940 as a repair technician and retired in 1975. He farmed for over 20 years, and had also managed the Country Club Manor. Mr. Patterson was a lifetime member of Telephone Pioneers of America, a past president of the Ionia Hunting and Fishing Club, and a former member of the Ionia Sheriff Posse.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn; daughter, Marcia (Carl) Rickert of Saranac; son, Bruce Patterson of Ionia; stepchildren, Janet (Tim) Denton, Jane (Tom) Clegg of Charlotte, Donald (Janet) Warner, Jr. of Plymouth, Candice (Jerry) Soldan of Grand Ledge, and Tim (Nancy) Warner of Eaton Rapids; five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, 13 step-grandchildren and many step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Eilene Simmons in 1969.

Graveside memorial services were held June 27 at Maple Grove Cemetery, Mason, with R. Raymond Rossell officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Eaton County Medical Care Facility. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home, Inc., Charlotte.

Thelma M. Pauley

Thelma M. Pauley, 89, of Jonesville passed away Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility.

Mrs. Pauley was born Jan. 20, 1912 in Midland County, to Elmer and Rosella (Kendall) Hock. She married Walter Pauley; he preceded her on Sept. 17, 1983. Thelma spent the majority of her life in Jonesville and attended the Bird Lake Wesleyan Missionary Church.

She is survived by her daughter, Pauline Gordon of Charlotte, N.C. and son, Skip Pauley of Charlotte, Mich.; 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, son Bud in 1996, four brothers and one sister. Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 27 at 2 p.m. at the Eagle Funeral Home, Jonesville, with Pastor Max Masters and Rick Maloyed officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Bird Lake Bible School, 7880 S. Bird Lk. Rd., Osseo, MI 49266. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.

Adele M. Pearson

Adele M. Pearson, 97, of Charlotte died Friday, June 29, 2001 at her residence.

Mrs. Pearson was born Sept. 21, 1903 in Bruning, Neb., the daughter of John and Elizabeth (Lubben) Carstens, and had been a Charlotte resident for 19 years coming from Papillion, Neb. While in Nebraska, she worked as a secretary for the County Extension Office and the Beautiful Savoir Lutheran Church in Omaha, and taught China painting. She had been a member of the First Lutheran Church in Omaha, Neb., First Lutheran Church in Papillion, Neb., and was currently a member of the First Lutheran Church in Charlotte.

Surviving are her daughter, Norma (Paul) Kremke of Charlotte, 8 grandchildren, Richard Pearson, Robert Pearson, Suzy Budinger, Pam Cappella, Missy Hurchens, Marty Kremke, Tricia Hilgendorf and Joel Kremke; several great-grandchildren; and sister, Dorothy Ebener of Omaha, Neb.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Chester in 1988; son, Richard Pearson in 1964; two grandsons, Donald Pearson and Andrew Kremke; and six brothers.

Funeral services were held July 3 at the First Lutheran Church, Charlotte, with Pastor Timothy Olson officiating. Interment was at West Carmel Cemetery, Charlotte.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Lutheran Church. Arrangements were by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte.

Clifford H. Pease

Clifford H. Pease, 92, of Kalamo, died Aug. 3, 2001 at Battle Creek Health System.

Mr. Pease was born March 15, 1909 to Edward and Carrie (Bowen) Pease in Kalamo Township. He graduated from Bellevue High School in 1927 and attended Argubright College. He worked as a farmer, and a school bus driver, and was briefly employed at Kellogg’s. He married Gertrude Balley on June 30, 1940; she died Oct. 29, 2000. He was a member of Masonic Lodge #327 in Kalamo and was the Kalamo Township supervisor for eight years.

He is survived by daughters, Helen (Ernest) White of Quincy, Sharon (Paul Sr.) Franklin of Nashville and Barbara (Charles Sr.) Schutt of Algonac; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; brother, Edward Pease of Charlotte; sisters, Dorothy Franks of Vermontville and Mary Eisenlord of Battle Creek; and good friends, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Fletcher of Kalamo.

Services were held Aug. 7 at Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue, with Pastor Carol-Sue Borkholder officiating. Interment was at Hilside Cemetery, Kalamo.

Memorial contributions may be made to Masonic Lodge #327 in Kalamo. Arrangements were by Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue.

Velma A. Pease

Velma A. Pease, 76, of Charlotte, died Sunday, Oct. 21, 2001. Mrs. Pease was born March 9, 1925 in Kalamo Township, the daughter of Howard and Athel (Pitt) Oaster. Mrs. Pease attended the Kalamo United Methodist Church and was a 50-year life member and past matron of the Kalamo O.E.S., Chapter 399. She was past president of the Eaton County Association O.E.S., a member of the Association for Retarded Children, and a board member of the EBI Breakthrough. She was valedictorian of the Bellevue High School class of 1943, and graduated from Western Michigan University. Mrs. Pease taught school at Portland and Vermontville Schools, Myers Country School and was a substitute teacher for many years.

She is survived by her husband, Edward; daughters, Carolyn (Gary) LaCross, Cheryl Pease and Christine Pease; grandchildren, Jason LaCross (fiancé Melissa Kleeman and her son Tray Hammer) and Jill (Adam) Potter; sister, Joyce (Bernard) Otto; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Eldora Anderson, in 1975. Funeral and O.E.S. memorial services were held Oct. 25 at the Bellevue United Methodist Church, with Pastor Mark Thompson officiating. Interment was at Riverside Cemetery, Bellevue. Memorial contributions may be made to the Bellevue Memorial Scholarship Foundation. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home, Inc.

Harland Orland Peck

Harland Orland Peck, age 87 of Hillman, Michigan and formerly of Eaton Rapids, died Monday, September 3, 2001 at the Hillman Nursing Center. He was born November 11, 1913 in Jones County, Iowa, the son of Leland and Mable (Orr) Peck. Harland was employed at Clark Equipment Company in Jackson before becoming caretaker at the Turtle Lake Hunting Club near Hillman, retiring in 1977 after 25 years of dedicated service. He was an Army Veteran of World War II with Company M of the 186 Infantry on the Pacific Front. He was also a member of St. John Lutheran Church and a past member of the Atlanta V.F.W. Post. Harland enjoyed airplanes, bowling, fishing, hunting, food, traveling, hard work, draft horses and many good friends. Preceding him in death were his wife, Viola C. (Steele) in 1976; son, Steven in 1959; and grandchild, Barbara Zentmyer in 1958.

Surviving are 3 children, Donna Jean (Robert) Zentmyer of San Diego, CA, Terry (Dale) Swetland of Grass Lake, MI and Larry (Cindy) Peck of Hillman, MI; 7 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; brother, Leland Peck of Eaton Rapids; special friend, Betty Crawford and the Steele family that accepted him as a brother.

Funeral services will be Friday, September 7, 2001 at 11 a.m. from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with Pastor John Schreiber officiating. Visitation will be Thursday from 3-9 p.m. at the funeral home. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to either the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation or the Hillman Nursing Center or the St. Johns Lutheran Church in memory of Harland O. Peck.

Charles William Penhorwood

Charles William Penhorwood age 81 of Eaton Rapids, died at his home on June 6, 2001. He was born September 19, 1919 in Columbus, Ohio, the son of Otto and Marie Penhorwood. After attending Marshall University, Charles enlisted in the Air Force, during World War II, where he served as a bombardier on a B-24 Liberator in the European Theatre of Operations. In 1958, he and his family moved to Eaton Rapids where he traveled as a pharmaceutical representative for Strausenburg Laboratories. Shortly thereafter, he began working for Devereaux Furniture and eventually Old Mills Furniture from which he retired.

A devoted husband and father, Mr. Penhorwood is survived by 5 daughters, Paula (LeRoy) Nelson of Eaton Rapids, Brenda Fransisco of Honolulu, Hawaii, Teresa (David) Johnson of Eaton Rapids, Barbara (Stacy) Sutfin of Eaton Rapids, and Sandra Leeper of Mishawaka, Indiana; 10 grandchildren, Matthew, Amanda and Jennifer Nelson, Benjamin Camp, Michael Fransisco, Brain, Claire, and Blake Johnson, and Erin and Shelby Sutfin; brother, Richard (Marian) Penhorwood of Huntington, W. Virginia and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Joyce.

Funeral services were held Monday, June 11th, from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids, with Rev. Marty DeBow officiating. Memorial contributions can be made to the National Aphasia Association.

Darwin D. Persons

Darwin D. Persons, 46, of Olivet, died Friday, Aug. 10, 2001 at his residence after an extended illness.

Mr. Persons was born in Battle Creek, the son of George “Dick” and Donna (Gary) Persons, and was a lifelong Lee Township resident and lifelong farmer. He was a 1973 graduate of Olivet High School, was a member of the NRA, has been active in Future Farmers of America and 4-H activities, and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Shari (Strang) Persons; two daughters, Michelle Waterhouse and Mandi Persons, both of Olivet; two granddaughters, Sara and Taylor Waterhouse; his mother, Donna Persons of Olivet; brother, Douglas Persons of Olivet; and three nieces and two nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, George “Dick” Persons. Memorial services were held Aug. 13 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel, Charlotte, with Rev. Douglas Hammond officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to Lifespan/ Good Samaritan Hospice Care. Arrangements were by Burkhead- Green Funeral Home, Charlotte.
