Elma R. Peters
Elma Ruth (Colburn) Peters, 66, of Charlotte, passed away Dec. 13, 2001 at her home in Charlotte after a battle for three years with lymphoma. Mrs. Peters was born July 21 1935 in Cambridge, Ohio. She spent most of her life in the Lansing area, graduating from Eastern High School in 1952. She loved bowling and her dolls, and was a volunteer at Hayes Green Beach Hospital. Mrs. Peters retired from Care Free Products as an administrative assistant. She is survived by her husband, William; three children, Brenda Martin, Cindi (Dick) Hettinga and Jeff Peters; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild; sisters, Mae Martin and Betty Bush, both of Lansing; and brothers, James (Barbara) Colburn of Wacousta and Fred (Penny) Colburn of Potterville. She was preceded in death by her parents Leland and Edith Colburn; brothers, Milton Colburn and Robert Colburn; brother-in-law, Robert Martin; sisters-in-law, Janet Colburn and Mary Colburn. Funeral services were held Dec. 18 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Rev. Lyle Heaton officiating. Interment was at Bosworth Cemetery, Olivet. Memorial donations may be made to Eaton Community Hospice, Charlotte.
Leah J. Priesman
Leah June Priesman, 76, of Charlotte died Jan. 9, 2001.
Mrs. Priesman was born Jan. 30, 1924 in Lansing, the daughter of Clay and Flossie (Lamb) McMillen.
She is survived by her husband, Neil; three daughters, Suzanne (Richard) McClure of Charlotte, Sandra (Robert) Wells of Engadine and Angela (Marty) Grove of Charlotte; four sons, Lynn (Diane) of Charlotte, Rodney (Annie) of Hawaii, Mary (Kris) of Hastings and Jack of Leslie; two sisters, Mabel Klepper of Charlotte and Florence Friend of Bath; a half sister, Rosemary McMillen of Lansing; three brothers, Charles McMillen of Laingsburg, Clay McMillen of Mason and Max McMillen of Florida; a half brother, Buddy McMillen of Lansing; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were Jan. 12 at Ft. Custer National Cemetery, Augusta with Pastor Clyde Harris officiating. Arrangements were made by the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Sparrow Dimondale Center, attention of the activity department.
Alma L. Purcell
Alma L. Purcell, 68, of Mulliken, died Monday morning, Sept. 17, 2001 at Hospice House of Mid-Michigan, Lansing, following a long illness.
Mrs. Purcell was born March 3, 1933 in Delhi Township, a daughter of John and Pearlie (Brown) Purcell.
She is survived by five sisters, Anna Lewis of Charlotte, Thelma (Bruce) Eastman of Oscoda, Georgia Enness of Lansing, Sonya (Robert) Schmidt of Joliet, Ill., and Nancy (Ralph) Roland of Newburg, N.C.; one brother, Harold Purcell of Mulliken; and nieces and nephews.
Services were held Sept. 21 at Barker-Lewis Funeral Home, Mulliken, with Rev. Steve Weinberger officiating. Interment was at Meadowbrook Cemetery, Mulliken. Pallbearers were Robert Aseltine, Richard David, Charles Ennes, Clarence Ennes, Forest Lewis and Mike Sharrah.
Arrangements were by Barker-Leik Funeral Home, Mulliken.
Bernadine M. Raines
Bernadine May Raines, 69, of Charlotte, died Tuesday, April 3, 2001. Mrs. Raines was born July 30, 1931 in Potterville, the daughter of Kenneth and Myrna (Green) Smalley. She worked in a variety of jobs, and enjoyed gardening, cooking, country music, and loving her grandchildren.
She is survived by daughters, Cindy (Ted) Tokar of Grand Ledge, Sally Raines of Saranac, Sandy Davis of Charlotte; son, Brian (Debbie) Raines of Destin, Fla.; six grandchildren; brothers, Francis (Shirley) Smalley and John (Betty) Smalley, both of Potterville; sister, Joann Teichman of Dimondale; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harley Raines in 1988; daughter, Paula May; brother, Kenneth Smalley; and sister-in-law, Mary.
Funeral services were held April 7 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Carol Ingells officiating. Interment was at Gresham Cemetery, Charlotte. Memorial contributions may be made to Pines Nursing Home in Lansing, or the Alzheimer’s Association. Arrangements by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Margaret “Maggie” Ramey
Margaret “Maggie” Ramey, age 94 of Eaton Rapids, died Wednesday, October 3, 2001 in Lansing. Mrs. Ramey was born July 22, 1907 in Wilder, TN. The oldest of seven and last surviving daughter of Charlie and Almira C. (Hicks) Copeland. She was a member of the Little Vineyard Church in Eaton Rapids since 1970. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Eric Clements, and second husband, Kermit Ramey; daughter Catherine; son, Emanuel; 3 sisters, Leanor, Lena and Dorie; 2 brother, Walter an Sammie.
Surviving are her daughter, Cora Branham of Bevinsville, KY; 4 sons, Milton “Bud” (Donna) Ramey, Kermit (Linda) Ramey, Jr. of Vermontville, William “Chester” (Wanetta) Ramey, Curtis “Paul” (Lola) Ramey both of Eaton Rapids; 20 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; 9 great-great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services were held on Saturday, October 6, 2001 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids. Interment followed at Rosehill Cemetery, Eaton Rapids. Casket bearers were Troy Ramey, Greg Ramey, Laryl Branham, and Ronnie Branham. Those desiring may make contributions to the American Heart Association in memory of Margaret Ramey.
Stephanie A. Rand
Stephanie Ann (Martin) Rand, 51 of Vermontville, died Monday, April 16, 2001.
Mrs. Rand was born Sept. 6, 1949 in Lansing, the daughter of Jack and Venice (Parr) Martin. She was a lifelong area resident and was a 1967 graduate of Charlotte High School. She worked six years for Messa, two years at Michigan Farm Bureau, two years for the American Cancer Society, and several years as a nurse’s aide.
She is survived by her husband, Tim; daughter, Autumn; one sister, Sandra Gilding of Charlotte; one brother, Jeffery Martin of Pentwater; her parents, Jack and Venice Martin of Hastings; grandmother, Evah Parr of Charlotte; four nephews, Scott (Becky) Gilding of El Cajon, Calif.; Matt (Kathy) Gilding of Charlotte; Ryan Gilding of Richmond, Va., and Jessie Gilding of Holland; mother-in-law, Delores Rand of Lansing; three brothers-in-law, Kirk (Vickie) Rand of Decatur, Randy (Jane) Rand of Grand Rapids and Shawn Rand of Lansing; and sister-in-law, April (George) Mochmar.
She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Lloyd Martin, grandmother, Doris Martin and grandfather, Carson Parr.
At Mrs. Rand’s prior request, cremation has taken place. Memorial services were held April 20 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel, Charlotte, with Rev. Robert McGraw of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Grand Ledge, officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to Autumn Rand’s education fund, or to Ingham Hospice.
Lindene E. Randall
Lindene Ellen Randall, 47, of Lansing, formerly of Charlotte, died Thursday, Dec. 20, 2001.
Miss Randall was born Aug. 3, 1954 in Hastings, the daughter of Ion and Margery (Cole) Randall. She graduated from Charlotte High School, Ferris State School of Pharmacy and Cooley Law School, and was the office manager for the Clean Water Action Group of Lansing for 10 years.
She is survived by her mother, Margery Randall; brother, Rodney (Karen) Randall of Charlotte; and nephews, Jason and Adam Randall. She was preceded in death by her father, Ion Randall.
Funeral services were held Dec. 22 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Rev. Jeffrey Bowman officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte. Memorial donations may be made to the Clean Water Action Group of Lansing. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home, Inc., Charlotte.
Florence Opal Rathbun
Florence Opal Rathbun, age 93 of Eaton Rapids, died Monday, July 23, 2001 at a nursing home in Hastings. She was born August 10, 1907 in Hamlin Township, the eldest child of Homer and Bertha (Simpson) Mitchell. Florence was a Life Member of the Sunshine Rebekah Lodge #142 in Eaton Rapids, holding Noble Grand and Chaplin offices. She was also a member of the Eaton Rapids Senior Citizens and the First Congregational Church in Eaton Rapids. Florence worked for Horner Woolen Mills and Heifetz Pickle Company both in Eaton Rapids. She volunteered as a Grey Lady for the Eaton Rapids Community Hospital for many years and enjoyed oil painting and embroidering. Florence will be best remembered as “Grandma” to every child in her neighborhood, no matter where she lived. Preceding her in death were her husband, Theron; sisters, Helen Stanley and Mattie Lena Harper/ Conner; brothers, Roland Mitchell and Cliford Mitchell.
Surviving are her son, Ned (Donna) Rathbun of Vermontville; 3 grandchildren, Thomas Rathbun and partner John Letson of Jackson, Daniel (Amber) Rathbun of Nashville, MI and Andrea (Robert) Pitcher-Gaum of Fowler; 12 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren; brother, Samuel Wayne (Julia) Byers of Lansing; many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 28th, from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with the Rev. Dr. David D’Arcy, officiating. Burial followed in the Oakwood Cemetery in Hamlin Township. For those desiring, a memorial contribution may be made to the Eaton Rapids Senior Center in memory of Florence O. Rathbun.
Joyce K. Reed
Joyce K. Closson Freeman Reed, 57, of Pinellas Park, Fla., formerly of Mulliken, died Saturday, March 3, 2001, in Baldwin.
Joyce was born Aug. 12, 1943, in Lansing, the daughter of Stanley and Rita (Carter) Closson.
She is survived by son Kevin (Cara) Freeman of Eaton Rapids; two daughters, Kim (Dan) Rugg and Kelly Jo Freeman, both of Charlotte; five grandchildren, Kisha, Corey, Curtus and Christine Freeman and Matthew Rugg; brother, Gary (Pat) Closson of Stanton; sister, Jan (Steve) Lawrence of Palmetto, Fla.; and special great-nephew, Hunter Lawrence.
Funeral services were held March 8 at Barker-Leik Funeral Home, Mulliken, with Joe Hilyard officiating. Interment was in Meadowbrook Cemetery, Mulliken.
