Sylvia E. Richardson

Sylvia E. Richardson, age 85 of Charlotte and formerly of Jackson, went to be with her Lord on Sunday, March 11, 2001 at the Eaton County Medical Care Facility in Charlotte. She was born May 11, 1915 in Bordon, IN, the daughter of Jessie and Fannie (Morris) Clark. She had worked as a Bookkeeper for many years before retiring from Casler’s Hardware in Jackson. Mrs. Richardson was a member of the Women of the Moose Chapter #389 of Jackson since 1957. Preceding her in death were 3 sisters and 1 brother.

Surviving are her daughter, Connie (Bill Jr.) Hoag of Springport; 2 grandchildren, Bill (Becky) Hoag III of Springport and Lori (Steve) Calandro of Eaton Rapids; 3 great-grandchildren, Tricia, Katie and Sammy Hoag all of Springport; several nieces and nephews; and sister-in-law, Eunice Richardson of Onondaga.

Graveside services will be Wednesday, March 14th at 11 a.m. at the Tompkins Cemetery in Tompkins Center. Family will receive friends at the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids on Tuesday, March 13th from 6-8 p.m. For those desiring, a memorial contribution may be made to the American Diabetes Association in memory of Sylvia E. Richardson.

Randy L. Rizor

Randy L. Rizor, 47, of Battle Creek, formerly of Bellevue, died July 30, 2001 at Borgess Medical Center.

Mr. Rizor was born Jan. 8, 1954 in Charlotte, the son of Robert Lee and Phyllis (Ruell) Rizor. He graduated from Bellevue High School in 1972 and attended Kellogg Community College. He worked as a mechanic at Ralston Purina in Battle Creek for 28 years. He enjoyed playing golf, bowling, mushrooming, playing cards and gardening.

He is survived by daughters, Lindsay Rizor of Grand Rapids and Kristin Rizor of Bellevue; son, Matthew Rizor of Battle Creek; special friend, Linda Keeler of Battle Creek; sisters, Jean Otto, Joyce White and Sue McClelland of Bellevue; brothers, Duane Rizor of Bellevue and Gary Rizor of Hastings; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Services were held Aug. 2 at Bellevue United Methodist Church, with Pastor Mark Thompson officiating. Interment was at Riverside Cemetery, Bellevue. Memorial contributions may be made to the family. Arrangements were by Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue.

Richard D. Roan

Richard D. Roan, 69, of DeTour Village, passed away Saturday afternoon, Oct. 20, 2001 at his home.

Mr. Roan was born Nov. 7, 1931 in Lansing. He graduated from Michigan State University with a master of arts degree in education. He moved to DeTour Village in 1963, where was employed by DeTour Area Schools as head of the English Department, teaching senior English for his entire career. He was the athletic director for many years and coached many students in all sports. He became the school principal in 1967 and served in that position until his retirement in 1997. His dedication to education lead to his involvement in the State Rules Committee for Education, the Michigan High School Association, the Upper Peninsula High School Association and the Athletic Association. He was named the athletic director of the year in 1994. He was a member of Potterville Masonic Lodge #367 F.&A.M., served in the U.S. Navy and was an avid reader.

He is survived by his wife, Rachel (Heinze), whom he married in Angola, Ind., on Dec. 20, 1949; son, Patrick (Tina) of DeTour Village; four grandchildren, Danna Rae Schmitter, Matthew Barrett, Ryan Roan and Devin Roan; two step-grandchildren, David Moser Jr. and Matthew Moser; three great-grandchildren, Hayden and Gabrielle Schmitter and Alexander Moser; sister, Beverly (Robert) Cooper of Charlotte; and brother-in-law, Ronald Heinze of Potterville.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jacqueline on June 24, 2000; sister, Betty Heinze; and his parents, Harold and Edna Roan. Memorial services were held Oct. 27 in the DeTour Area School gymnasium. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the Arthritis Foundation Michigan Chapter.

James W. Robins

James W. Robins, 84, of Charlotte, died Monday, Aug. 27, 2001.

Mr. Robins was born April 28, 1917 in Chester Township, the son of James and Alfaretta (Smith) Robins. He was a sergeant of Battery B 232nd Field Artillery Extrusion for 27 years, and raised rabbits to sell and for research. He was also a member of the IOOF for 64 years, VFW Post #2406 and American Legion Post #42.

He is survived by brothers, Royal (Jennie) Robins of Harrison, Amos (Bernadine) Robins of Charlotte; sisters, Edna McDermid and Esther Wyble of Charlotte; two grandsons, James and Matthew Robins; step-granddaughter, Melissa (James) Falk; and many nieces and nephew.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances in 1982; son, Lawrence Robins on April 29, 2001; and sister, Mable in 1975.

Funeral services were held Aug. 30 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Bob Wyant of the International Order of the Odd Fellows and Pastor Pat Sterling officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Odd Fellows or the Rebekahs. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home, Inc., Charlotte.

Lawrence J. Robins

Lawrence J. “Rabbit” Robins, 50, of Charlotte, died Sunday, April 29, 2001 at Sparrow Hospital, Lansing, after a short illness.

Mr. Robins was born June 14, 1950 in Charlotte, the son of James and Frances (Crossian) Robins and was a lifelong Eaton County resident. He was a 1968 graduate of Charlotte High School and had been employed for many years at Carefree Products in Charlotte.

He is survived by two sons, James (fiancé, Kathy Dershem) of Flint and Matthew of Charlotte; stepdaughter, Melissa (Jim) Falk of Charlotte; three step-grandchildren; and father, James Robins of Charlotte.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Frances (Crossian) Robins and an infant brother.

Funeral services were held May 2 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel, Charlotte, with Rev. Steven Bohus officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice. Arrangements by Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel, Charlotte.

Carl Rochester Jr.

Carl Rochester Jr., 78, of Charlotte, died April 17, 2001.

Mr. Rochester was born April 21, 1922. He will be remembered for his service to the community for over 230 years as a State Farm insurance agent. He also was a long-time member of the Charlotte Volunteer Fire Department, commander of VFW Post #2406, a member of the JCC’s, and Masons. He received the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ralph Levan Memorial state service officer award, as well as being Charlotte JC past man of the year and state director.

He is survived by his sister, Martha Sudberry; seven children; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lee.

A small service was held April 20 at the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans Chapel in Grand Rapids. Memorial donations may be made to the Veterans Home.

Elena S. Rodriguez

Elena S. Rodriguez, 87, of Charlotte, died Friday, Sept. 21, 2001.

Mrs. Rodriguez was born Nov. 13, 1913, in Pescadia, Mexico, the daughter of Estanislado and Mari Elena (Cirio) Saenz. She was a member of the St. Mary Catholic Church.

She is survived by daughters, Amelia (Alden) McBride of St. Johns and Juanita (Ernest) Means of Charlotte; son, Jose “Joe” (Sandra) Rodriguez; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Juan; daughter, Angelita; and three brothers.

Funeral services were held Sept. 24 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Charlotte, with Father Bennett Constantine officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Mary Catholic Church Building Fund. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home, Inc., Charlotte.

Dorothy Elizabeth Rogers

Dorothy Elizabeth Rogers, age 87 of Eaton Rapids, died Tuesday, July 24, 2001. Dorothy was a life-long resident of Eaton Rapids, a member of St. Peter Catholic Church and active with the Eaton Rapids Senior Citizens. She was a former Nurses Aid and later an Administrative Assistant at the Senior Center. Preceding her in death were her husband, Arch W. Rogers; son, Charles W. Rogers; and step-son, Arch W. Rogers Jr.

Surviving are her son, Gary (Julie) Rogers of Mason; beloved grandchildren, Andrew, Allison, Bethany and Zachary Rogers; step-daughter-in-law and dear friend, Maxine Miller of Eaton Rapids.

Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, August 1st, at 11:30 a.m. at the St. Peter Catholic Church in Eaton Rapids. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions may be made to the Eaton Rapids Senior Center or St. Peter Catholic Church in memory of Dorothy E. Rogers. Envelopes are available through the Skinner Funeral home in Eaton Rapids and will be available at the Memorial Mass.
