Raymond Schriver

Raymond “Shorty” Schriver, 81, of Vermontville, died Sunday, March 25, 2001 at his home.

Mr. Schriver was born Sept. 23, 1919 in Michawaka, Ind., the son of Emiel and Elisabeth (Guethals) DeSchryver. He was raised in Woodland, Indiana, and attended area schools. He married Dorothy Schelter on Dec. 5, 1943 at Lake Odessa, and was employed at General Motors Oldsmobile plant in Lansing for 30 years, retiring in 1982. He was a member of the U.S. Army, serving as a military policeman in the states during World War II. One of his primary duties included working prisoners of war on area farms. He was a kind-hearted and simple man who enjoyed hunting, fishing, and mowing his lawn.

He is survived by a son, Raymond (Mary) Schriver of Vermontville; a daughter, Luanne (Ray) Betts of Lansing; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be announced at a later date. Interment was at Lakeview Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society. Arrangements were by the Maple Valley Chapel.

Richard Lee Scutt

Richard L. Scutt, age 68, of Eaton Rapids, died Monday, August 13, 2001. He was born January 6, 1933 in Dimondale. Dick was a Self Employed Business Entrepreneur. He was in the Marines for four years serving in the Korean War. Following service he served in the National Guard.

Surviving are his wife, Maxine; two sons, Richard (Ricky) and wife Kim, Rex and wife Andrea; two daughters, Michelle (Charles) McGeehan, Cheryl (Jeff) Ellsworth; stepchildren, Sandra and David Strzempek, Susan and Kenneth Kandell, Bobby and Lori Schoen, Steve and Beth Schoen; 14 grandchildren, Lee, Jason, Clayson and Kody Scutt, Amy and Kadeigh McGeehan, Elizabeth, Evan and Emily Ellsworth, Angela Dillingham, Brody, Zac, Garrett and Shelby Schoen; one great-grandchild, Cheyenne Scutt. He is also survived by one brother Donald (Jean) Scutt and one sister Olive Mason.

Services were held Thursday, August 16 from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with Military Graveside Services at Greenwood Cemetery in Aurelius. Contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association or Eaton Rapids Medical Center in memory of Richard L. Scutt. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.

Frances Marie Sebastian

Frances Marie Sebastian, age 76 of Springport, died Tuesday, July 31, 2001 at her residence. She was born December 23, 1924 in Albion, the daughter of John and Lovina Marie (Crosier) Adams. Frances was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church in Eaton Rapids and the Altar Society. Mrs. Sebastian was an active member of the Eaton Rapids Medical Center Auxiliary, Past President of the Springport VFW Auxiliary and retired from Eaton Stamping in 1989. She was preceded in death by her sister, Margaret Rowe; 3 brothers, John, Robert, and William Adams; 1 grandchild, John Adam Smith and 2 great-grandchildren, Cameron and Haley Sebastian.

Surviving are her husband of 58 years, Charles “Bud” Sebastian, Jr.; 5 children, Tom (Marlene) Sebastian, William (Christina) Sebastian both of Springport, Kathleen (T.L) Brooks of Arkansas, Linda (James) Fuller of Eaton Rapids, Charles Frederick “Buddy” Sebastian III of Albion; 8 grandchildren, Jason T. Sebastian, Carrie (Steve) Davis, William Charles (Anjala) Sebastian, NayThanuel (Kimberly) Sebastian, Anthony (Staci) Sebastian, James Chad (Alissa) Fuller, Nicole Marie Fuller, Charles F. Sebastian IV; 9 great-grandchildren and 1 brother, Fred (Donna) Adams of Marathon, FL.

Mass of the Christian Burial was prayed on Saturday, August 4th, at St. Peter Catholic Church, Eaton Rapids, with Father Bennett Constantine as Celebrant. Interment followed at Springport Cemetery. Rosary was prayed on Friday at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids. Those desiring may make contributions to either St. Peter Catholic Church or the Eaton Rapids Medical Center Foundation in memory of Frances M. Sebastian.

Anna M. Sebo

Anna Marie Sebo, 89, of Bellevue, died June 8, 2001 at Mercy Pavilion after a long illness.

She was born August 13, 1911 to James and Anna (Lendval) Kormos in East Chicago, Ind. She worked at Leila Hospital and Post Cereals, and married Steven Sebo, Jr., on July 12, 1947; he died in 1964. She was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church and enjoyed needlework.

She is survived by sisters, Rose (Ed) Shehane of Fort Smith, Ark., and Irene (Wayne) Lennon of Bellevue; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a brother, James Kormos of Chicago, Ill.

Services were held June 12 at St. Ann Catholic Church. Arrangements were by Shaw Funeral home, Bellevue.

Keith F. Seitz

Keith Frank Seitz, 96, of Vermontville, died June 28, 2001 in Hastings.

Mr. Seitz was born Nov. 21, 1904 in Eaton County, the son of Frank and Sarah (Deuel) Seitz. He was a lifelong farmer in the Vermontville area, and a former member of the Woodlawn Cemetery Board and the Eaton County Farm Bureau.

He is survived by step-daughter, Beverly (Bill) Lindberg of Lake Odessa; stepson, Edward “Jim” (JoAnn) Zemke of Vermontville; seven step-grandchildren and 13 step-great-grandchildren; nephew-in-law, Frank Darling of South Lyons; great-nephew, Tom (Kristina) Darling and great niece, Kim (Jim) Frisbie, both of Howell; and a host of step-great-great-grandchildren, and great-great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife Josie in 1975, second wife Isabelle in 1987, step-daughter Sarah Ames in 1997, brother Donald Seitz in 1954 and niece Connie Darling in March 2001.

Funeral services were held June 30 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Rev. Eric Lison and Mark Jarvie officiating. Interment was at Woodlawn Cemetery, Vermontville.

Memorial contributions may be made to Woodlawn Cemetery. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home, Inc., Charlotte.

Willis A. Selden

Willis Arthur Selden, 81, of Olivet, died Sunday, May 20, 2001 at his residence after a long illness.

Mr. Selden was born Jan. 1, 1920 in Pontiac, the son of Arthur Willis and Florence (Seeley) Selden, and had been an Olivet resident since 1974, coming from Virginia. He was a 1941 graduate of Olivet College, earned his master’s degree from Michigan State University in 1980 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a journalist and public relations specialist, having served as editor of the Midland, Minn., Co-Operator and had worked for the Justice Department as a media relations specialist. When he came to Olivet, he set up the Journalism Department and the college radio station at Olivet College, and had also taught English. He attended the Olivet Congregational Church, was a member of the Olivet Lions Club and the Society For Professional Journalists of America.

He is survived by three daughters, Elisabeth Selden Cakir of Izmir, Turkey, Anne Selden Berry of Olivet, and Caroline Selden Barnett of Falls Church, Va.; one son, Ramsay William Selden of Alexandria, Va.; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Richard of Charlottesville, Va., and Charles of Florence, Ore.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elisabeth Ellen (Storm) Selden on June 12, 2000.

Cremation has taken place, and memorial services will be held in June. Memorial contributions may be made to the Huntington’s Disease Society of America. Arrangements were by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte.

W. Franklyn Shaler III

W. Franklyn Shaler, III, 86, of Pinehurst, N.C., formerly of Bellevue, died Aug. 7, 2001 in Quail Haven Village, Pinehurst.

Mr. Shaler was born Dec. 26, 1914 in Texas, to W.F. and Eula (Fuller) Shaler. The family moved to Bellevue when he was about 2. He lived in the family home on Vine Street in Bellevue for 82 years before moving in December 2000 to Pinehurst to be near his sister. Mr. Shaler worked as a bookkeeper for many years, and served as Bellevue village clerk from 1967 to 1974. He was an active Mason, named Mason of the Year by Bellevue F & AM Lodge in 1985, and served the lodge five times during 54 years of membership as worshipful master. He was active in the community and church, serving as treasurer of Bellevue United Church for three years, treasurer of Bellevue Historical Society, and secretary-treasurer of the Commercial Club. Mr. Shaler was also active in the senior citizen programs in Bellevue and Olivet.

He is survived by a sister, Betty Thompson of Southern Pines, N.C.

Local memorial services with Masonic honors will take place at a later date. Interment was at Grass Lake Cemetery, Grass Lake.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bellevue United Methodist Church. Arrangements were by Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue.

Alice E. Sharp

Alice Eunice Sharp, 78, of Charlotte, died Monday, Nov. 5, 2001 at her home. Mrs. Sharp was born March 4, 1923 in Charlotte, the daughter of Darwin and Helen (Johnson) Jaquette. She was a food service employee for Olivet School District and Olivet College and belonged to the Union Church of Five Comers. She is survived by four daughters, Wanda (Bryan) Kleinfelt of Charlotte, Deborah Bradley of Tulsa, Okla., Barbara Stauffer of Kalamazoo and Carolyn (Gary) Baker of Orlando, Fla.; 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; sister, Ruth (George) Perry of Olivet; two sisters-in-law, Camilla Jaquette and Valdean Jaquette, both of Charlotte. She was preceded in death by her husband, Coy E. Sharp in 1995, and two brothers, Arthur Jaquette and Robert Jaquette. Funeral services were held Nov. 8 at Union Church of Five Comers, Charlotte, with Marten Saunders and Robert Homan officiating. Interment was at Bosworth Cemetery, Walton Township, Olivet. Memorial contributions may be made to Union Church of Five Comers, Charlotte. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home, Inc.
