Otto D. Shortz
Otto Dale Shortz, 90, of Mulliken, died Thursday afternoon, Oct. 11, 2001 at his home.
Mr. Shortz was born Aug. 4, 1911 in Chester Township, a son of Henry and Edna (Earl) Shortz. He was a retired GM employee and Roxand Township fireman.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Maxine; three sons, Frank (Linda) Shortz of Portland, Marvin Shortz of Springville, Calif., and Gary (Nancy) Shortz of Portland; four grandchildren, Michelle, Michael (Sonia), Sara and Calvin Shortz; two great-grandchildren, Ashley and Cameron Shortz; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held Oct. 15 at Barker-Leik Funeral Home, Mulliken, with Pastor Don Woolum of the Mulliken United Methodist Church officiating. Interment was at Meadowbrook Cemetery. Pallbearers were James O’Brien, Rob Piercefield, Jon Sharp, Calvin Shortz, Michael Shortz and Andrew Sunstrum.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Roxand Township Fire Department. Arrangements were by Barker-Leik Funeral Home, Mulliken.
Bethany J. Shumaker
Bethany “Beth” Joanne Shumaker, 52, of Bellevue, died Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001.
Mrs. Shumaker was born Aug. 29, 1948, in Lansing, the daughter of Robert and Alice (Doebler) Ott. She was the secretary for the athletic director at Olivet High School, and an active parent and supporter of the Olivet High School Athletics and Band programs. She was a former 4-H leader and a member of the Michigan Brown-Swiss Association.
She is survived by her husband, David Shumaker; son, John Shumaker and his fiancé, Amanda Daniels, and son Robert Shumaker, all of Bellevue; and foster daughter, Donna (Jack) Graham of Monroe.
She was preceded in death by her daughter Allyson in 1980.
Funeral services were held Feb. 19 in the Olivet High School gymnasium, with Pastor Roy Backus officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Bethany Shumaker Scholarship Fund at Olivet High School, Olivet High School Band Boosters or Sports Boosters, or the American Cancer Society.

Juan R. Silvas
Juan R. Silvas, 72, of Charlotte, died Monday, Oct. 8, 2001 at his residence after an extended illness.
Mr. Silvas was born may 13, 1929 in New Braunfels, Texas, the son of Pedro and Felictas (Rodriguez) Silvas, and had been a Charlotte resident since 1955, coming from Texas. He was a retired janitor, having worked for Meijer and the Charlotte Masonic Temple. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Charlotte.
He is survived by his wife, Manuela (Vera) Silvas; one son, Rolando Silvas of Charlotte; six brothers, Frank (Cruz), Sid (Dora), Matt (Linda), and Bruce (Sherrie), all of Charlotte, Pete (Maria) and David (Theresa) of Lansing; two sisters, Mary (Leonard) Cruz of Lansing and Jobie Moist of Charlotte; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mass of the Christian burial was held Oct. 12 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Charlotte, with Rev. Fr. Denis Spitzley officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.
Memorial donations may be made to the family. Arrangements were by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Manuela V. Silvas
Manuela Vera Silvas, 75, of Charlotte, died Wednesday, Dec. 26 at the Hospice House of Mid Michigan in Lansing.
Mrs. Silvas was born Jan. 8, 1926 in New Braunfels, Texas, and had been a Charlotte resident since coming from Texas in 1955. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Charlotte.
She is survived by her son, Rolando Silvas of Charlotte; four sisters and two brothers, all in Texas; and her special friend Rosa Rice of Chicago.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Juan R. Silvas, on Oct. 8,2001 and by a brother.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 31 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Charlotte, with Rev. Fr. Denis Spitzley officiating. Interment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held Sunday, Dec. 30, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte, with a Scripture/Rosary Service at 7 p.m. Memorials may go to the Family. Carl Dale Simons
Carle Dale Simons, age 76 of Onondaga, died Sunday, December 2, 2001 in Eaton Rapids. Carl was born March 17, 1925 in Mason, the son of Charles and Bertha Simons. Mr. Simons was preceded in death by his wife, Ardena L. Simons.
Surviving are 2 daughters, Jackie (Clark) Howe of Mason, Shirley (Alex) Mueller of Michigan Center; 6 sons, John A., of Onondaga, Charles of Eaton Rapids, Carl D., James C. both of Onondaga, Mitchell (Evelyn) of Eaton Rapids, Richard (Sheryl) of Leroy; 14 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; mother-in-law, Margaret K. Banks of Lansing; brother, Leon Simons; sister, Eva Brown.
Services have been held. Arrangements were by the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids.
Betty J. Smith
Betty Jane Smith, 73, of Bellevue died Feb 2, 2001 at Evergreen Manor. Mrs. Smith was born Aug. 27, 1927 to Arthur and Bessie (South) Jenkins in Battle Creek. She graduated from Bellevue High School in 1945, and worked as a waitress at several restraints in Bellevue and the Gambles store in the 1970’s. She enjoyed bowling and cards. She married Charles Good on Dec. 12, 1945; he died November 1972. She married Dale Smith on April 26, 1977; he died in May 1981.
She is survived by sons, James and Joseph Good of Bellevue; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; sisters, Bessie Mae Stewart of Nashville, and Virginia Smally of Piscataway, N.J.; and brothers, Lloyd and Raymond Jenkins of Battle Creek, and Clyde Jenkins of Bellevue.
She was preceded in death by sisters Beatrice Struwin, Eloise Barber, and Alma Erskine; and brothers, Floyd, James “Bill”, Robert, Kenneth, and Harold.
Services were held Feb. 6 at Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue, with Pastor Doug Hammond officiating. Interment was in Riverside Cemetery, Bellevue. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.
Hilda G. Smith
Hilda G. Smith, 84, passed away Sunday, March 18, 2001 at the home of her son and his wife, Russell and Hazel Gibbs, in Grand Junction.
Mrs. Smith was born Feb. 22, 1917 in Brooklyn, N.Y. and moved to California as a youngster. In 1937 she married Ross Gibbs and they lived in Olivet from 1948 to 1964; he preceded her in death in 1971. She married Bruce Smith in 1972 and they owned Smith’s Hearing Aids in Decatur, Ill., until 1995 when they moved to Naples, Fla. He preceded her in death in 1998.
Surviving in addition to her son and his wife are four grandsons and three great-grandchildren; four stepsons; numerous step-grandchildren; and three sisters.
Funeral services were held March 21 at D. L. Miller Funeral Home, Bloomingdale. Interment was at Breedsville Cemetery, Columbia Twp.
