Lilian Simens
Lilian A. Simens, 89, of Olivet died Tuesday, March 30, at Tendercare, Marshall. She was born Sept. 27, 1909 in Evansville, IN to Christian and Gertrude (Limberg) Meyer.
She was a homemaker and worked for a short time as a cook for Fostrian Nursing Home in Flushing. She married Noah M. Simens, Sept. 16, 1939. He survives.
Also surviving are daughter, Phyllis A. Hadden of Olivet; son, James A. Simens of Clio; 7 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Simens’s hobbies were gardening, cooking, and quilting.
Cremation has taken place. There will be visitation. A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m., Sunday, April 11, in the Seminary Room of the Battle Creek Seventh Day Adventist Tabernacle, Battle Creek with Elder Dale Leamon officiating.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Battle Creek Seventh Day Tabernacle. Arrangements by the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Helen Simmons
Helen Simmons, 83, of Jones, passed away Friday morning, July 16, 1999 at the Alamo Nursing Home, Kalamazoo, following a long illness.
Mrs. Simmons was born Aug. 23, 1915 at Constantine, the daughter of Claude and Belle (Shafer) Hartman. She was a lifelong resident of Newberg Twp., and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Newberg. On May 3, 1934, in Jones, she married Ray Simmons, who preceded her in death June 12, 1993.
Surviving are three sons, Milton (Mary) Simmons of Charlotte, Richard (Nancy) Simmons of Otsego, and Kenneth (Terry) Simmons of Davisburg; 14 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Phyllis Jacobs on Oct. 18, 1989; two sisters; and two brothers.
Funeral services were held July 20, 1999 in the First Baptist Church of Newberg, Jones, with Pastor Mike Owen officiating. Interment was at Poe’s Cemetery.

Inda Bell Simpson
Inda Bell Simpson, age 81, of Holland, MI (formerly of Watson Twp.) died Tuesday, January 26, 1999 in Holland. Mrs. Simpson was born August 14, 1917 in Eaton Rapids the daughter of Henry and Margaret (Fowler) Tingley. She was a member of the Watson Busy Workers Club for many years.
Surviving are four children, Clark (Mary) Simpson of Kentucky, Catherine (Kenneth) Pardee of Watson Twp., Christine Dunn of Holland and Cheryl (Ryan) Westerhof of Holland; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Irene Kyle of Decatur and Ruby Day of Scotts; 2 sisters-in-law, Evelyn Simpson of Muskegon and Florence Simpson of Watson Twp.; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond, in 1972 and one sister and brother, Opal and Elsworth.
Graveside services were held Friday, January 29, at Miner Cemetery, Watson Twp. Arrangements were by Gorden Funeral Residence, Allegan Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to Wayland Ambulance.
Beryl Sine
Beryl Sine, 85, of Olivet, died Oct. 28, 1999 at the Evergreen Manor Nursing Home, Battle Creek, after an extended illness.
Mrs. Sine was born Aug. 29, 1914 in Bellevue, the daughter of Glenn and Myrtle (Felter) Greenfield and was a lifelong Olivet area resident. She had been employed by Kellogg’s, Battle Creek, and in the cafeteria at Olivet College. She had also been self-employed as a wallpaper hanger in the Olivet area for many years. She liked to knit, crochet, sew, cook and look after her grandchildren.
She is survived by one daughter, Eleanor (Laurel) Mott of Olivet; two sons, Robert and Richard, both of Olivet; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one sister, Audrey Wireman of Marshall.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Orman in 1943; one daughter, Helen in 1961; two sisters, Marjorie Laing and Mildred Dowding; and one brother, Laurence Greenfield.
Services were Oct. 30 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel, Charlotte, with the Rev. Winford Collins officiating. Interment was in the Clarence Center Cemetery, Calhoun County.
Memorial contributions may be made to Lee Center United Methodist Church or the National Kidney Foundation.
Suevie Slaughter
Suevie Ballentine Slaughter, 85, of Vero Beach, Fla., died Aug. 19, 1999 at her daughter’s home following a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Slaughter was born May 21, 1914 in Tuskegee, Ala., and moved to Vero Beach this year from Charlotte. She owned and operated the Slaughter Adult Foster Care Home in Charlotte. She was a long-time member of the United Pentecostal Church, Grand Ledge. Other memberships include Rebekkah Lodge #88, the Needle Pushers Club, the Hospitality Club and the Kitchen Band, all of Charlotte.
Surviving are her sons, Clarence Slaughter of Caledonia, James Slaughter of Charlotte, Patrick Slaughter of Iron River; daughters, Ann Catchick of Vero Beach, Fla. and Gini James of Warsaw, Ind.; stepdaughter, Linda Feldpausch of Holt; brother, Anthony Ballentine of Smyrna, Ga.; sister, Mae McHargue of Lochapocha, Ala.; 15 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Antioch United Methodist Church in Notasulga, Ala. on Aug. 23. Interment was at Antioch United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Herman Sluyter
Herman Sluyter, 92, of Okemos and Charlotte, died Dec. 19, 1999 at the Eaton County Medical Care Facility in Charlotte.
Mr. Sluyter was born Sept. 11, 1907 in Cadillac, the son of Gilbert and Johanna Sluyter. He married Beatrice Horner June 21, 1940 in Harrison.
He grew up in Cadillac and attended Cadillac Schools, moving to Lansing in 1942.
He had been a refrigeration technician for Tranter Manufacturing Co., a manufacturer of wartime equipment for aircraft.
After the war, he owned and operated Sluyter’s Refrigeration Service for many years and was employed at Michigan State University in the refrigeration department for 17 years, retiring in 1970.
He and his wife spent summers in Houghton Lake, and winters in Clearwater, Fla., for 18 years. He lived in Charlotte for the last eight years.
He is survived by two sisters, Alberta Bouwman and Josephine (Robert) Melendy, both of Grand Rapids; one niece, Marilyn (Robert) Rozell of Jackson; one grandniece, Lisa Rozell; one grandnephew, Tom Rozell; special friends, Doreen and Dale Weber of Grand Ledge; devoted friend, Carolyn Nichols of Charlotte; and many cousins.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice, Aug. 31, 1989.
Services were Dec. 21 at Hall Funeral Chapel, Manton. Interment was in the Liberty Township Cemetery, Manton.
Doris Smith
Doris Smith, 73, of Sunfield, passed away Friday, Sept. 3, 1999 at her residence in Sebewa Twp., Sunfield.
Mrs. Smith was born Jan. 1, 1926 in L’Anse, the daughter of William James and Emily (Chosa) Hocking.
Surviving are her husband of 46 years, Kenneth Smith of Sunfield; son, Curtis Smith of Sunfield; brothers, Carlton (Ethylene) Smith of Park Lake, Calvin (Alice) Smith of Farborn, Ohio, Thomas (Dorrine) Smith of Clarksville; sisters, Beverly (Clayton) Townsend of Bath, Della (Mike) Kulack of Cedar Springs, Donna (Douglas) Green of Chase, Mary (Ray) Dykhouse of Lake Odessa, Ellane Smith of Lake Odessa, Helen Medosh of Marquette; special friends, John and Bertha Smith of Sunfield, Max and Joanne Fish of Eagle; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers.
Graveside services were held Sept. 9 at Woodlawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Woodland.

Doris Phillips Smith
Doris Phillips Smith passed away on Thursday, March 25, 1999 in her 85th year. Doris was born October 27, 1913 in North Bennington, VT, the daughter of Chester Aly and Agnes (Henry) Phillips. She attended Bridgeport School of Nursing and graduated from the Weylister Business College in CT. Doris married Stanley Norton Smith, Jr. in 1935 and resided in Milford, CT until his death in 1974 when she moved to Michigan to reside with her daughter, Richalene and her beloved son-in-law, Peter Tierney.
Besides her daughter and son-in-law, Doris also leaves behind her most cherished grandchildren, Kent Krehel of Harbor Springs and Tiffany Tierney of East Lansing; her sister-in-law, Edith Masterson of Port Charlotte, FL; niece, Barbara Harrington of Virginia Beach, VA; and her very dearest friends, Linda Rhodes of Milford, CT, Ed Rhodes of Washington, DC, and Claudia Miller of Eaton Rapids.
The family received friends on Monday evening, March 29, at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids. Those desiring may make contributions to either the American Cancer Society or the First United Methodist Church in memory of Doris Smith.
