Charles Cooley

Charles Cooley, 84, of Clearwater, Fla., formerly of Hastings and Charlotte, died Oct. 29, 1999 in Clearwater.

Mr. Cooley was born May 29, 1915 in Tustin, the son of Henry and Zella (Snyder) Cooley. He was raised in the Eaton Rapids area and attended Eaton Rapids school, graduated in 1935 from Eaton Rapids High School. He married Eula Bush April 30, 1939, and following their marriage, lived in Charlotte until 1961 when they moved to Hastings, then Clearwater in the fall of 1979. He was employed at Consumers Power Co. for 31 years, retiring Sept. 30, 1976. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge.

He is survived by three daughters, Connie (Ollen) McLane of Largo, Fla., Nancy (Clarence) Pomeroy of Hastings, and Karen (John) Despres of Hastings; one son, H. Eugene (JoAnne) of Mackinaw; 17 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Claude of Owosso; and two brothers-in-law, Claude Cox of Jackson and Carl Cook of Lansing.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Eula Dec. 21, 1998; and one sister, Maxine Cox.

Memorial services are Monday, Nov. 8, at the Wren Funeral Home, Hastings, with the Rev. G. Kent Keller officiating. Interment will be at Hastings Riverside Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Eula Cooley

Eula M. Cooley, 81, of Clearwater, Fla., formerly of Hastings, died Monday, Dec. 21, 1998 at Mariner Health of Clearwater.

Mrs. Cooley was born May 1, 1917, in Charlotte, the daughter of Will and Grace (Coats) Bush. She was raised in the Charlotte area and attended Charlotte schools, graduating in 1934 from Charlotte High School. She was married to Charles Cooley on Apr. 30, 1939. She had been employed by Charlotte Appliance Store, Sears and Roebuck Store in Charlotte, Wagner and Loucks in Charlotte, Dr. Louis Nitsch office in Hastings and Moriarity Pole Buildings in Hastings. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, enjoyed bowling, word search puzzles and playing bingo.

She is survived by her husband, Charles; three daughters, Connie (Ollen) McLane of Largo, Fla., Nancy (Clarence) Pomeroy and Karen (John) Despres both of Hastings; a son, H. Eugene (JoAnne) of Mackinaw; 18 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Iva Bush, Eva Olmstead, Norma Cook and Bethel Stillwell; and a brother, Charles Bush.

Services were held Dec. 28 at Wren Funeral Home with the Rev. G. Kent Keller officiating. Interment was at Hastings Riverside Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Wren Funeral Home of Hastings.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of choice.

Jeanette Cooper

Jeanette Cooper, at 73, of Charlotte, died Saturday, Dec. 26, 1998 at Eaton County Medical Care Facility in Charlotte.

Mrs. Cooper was born in Spencer (Kalkaska County), the daughter of Grover and Gladyce (Wheeler) Ball. She was a homemaker.

She is survived by her husband, Loyd; two daughters, Sandra Ellen (John) Wycoff of Columbus, GA, Kristie Lee (Leon) Aldrige of Niles; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Stanley Ball of Fife Lake and Roger Ball of Kalkaska.

Services were held Dec. 29 at the Pray Funeral Home with the Rev. Arthur Salisbury officiating. Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Michigan Heart Association.

Jerry F. Cooper

Jerry F. Cooper, age 63, of Springport died November 3, 1999 at his residence. He was born in Albion the son of Floyd E. and Gertrude (Sullivan) Cooper. Mr. Cooper lived in Jackson County most of his life. He worked at Union Steel for 16 ears, later working at Specialty Castings in Springport, retiring in 1992. He enjoyed bowling, was a member of the Marshall Moose #676 and loved to hunt and fish. He was preceded in death by his father, Floyd Cooper and brother, Bob Cooper.

Surviving are his wife, Donna; 2 sons, Floyd (Sharon Kay) Cooper of Albion and Jeff (Paula) Cooper of Springport; 3 daughters, Cheryl Reitz of Jackson, Peggy Sue (Tim) Brockwell of Horton and Julie (Lanny) Clawson of Albion; 10 grandchildren, Kevin, Steven & Craig Brasseur, Charles & Stacy Cooper, Jenny Cooper, Amy & Alicia Clawson, Travis & Joey Cooper; 2 brothers, James (Charlotte) Cooper of Horton and Jack (Donna) Cooper of Pryor, OK; and mother, Gertrude Draper of Springport.

Funeral services were held November 8 ,1999 at the Albion Chapel of Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels with Rev. Robert Doner officiating. Interment was at Fairview Cemetery, Parma. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cooper Family.

John Coppess

John Edward Coppess, 89, of Sunfield died Oct. 17, 1999 at Altera Clare/Bridge Assisted Living Center, Lansing.

Mr. Coppess was born Dec. 28, 1909 in Waterman, II., the son of George and Mae (Gallup) Coppess Reahm. He lived in the Sunfield area nearly all his life and was a 1930 graduate of Sunfield High School. He owned and worked his own farm.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Myrtie; three daughters, Betty (Jack) Smith of Sunfield, Doris (Darrell) Bell of Sunfield, and Ruth Ann (Ronald) Fuller of Houston, Texas; one son, Jack (Betty Lee) of Toledo, Ohio; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Adelaide (Raymond) Dalton of Lake Odessa and Dorothy Steward of Lake Odessa.

He was preceded in death by his father in 1953, his mother in 1983, a special grandfather, John Gallup in 1938, two sisters, Lucy Coppess in 1917, Ruth Coppess in 1925, and two brothers, George in 1980 and Charles in 1977.

Services were Oct. 20 at the Rosier Funeral Home, Mapes-Fisher Chapel, Sunfield, with the Rev. Brian Sheen officiating. Interment was in the Sunfield Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer’s Treatment & Research.

Myrtie Bell Coppess

Myrtie Bell Coppess passed away November 9, 1999 in her farm home on Round Lake Road, Sunfield, at the age of 92. She was born on November 3, 1907 in Sunfield Township, the daughter of Ira Jay Hager and Ethel Bell (Porter) Hager. Mrs. Coppess lived in the Vermontville area and graduated from Vermontville High School in 1926. That same year she moved to Sunfield. In 1927 she attended Western State Teachers College in Kalamazoo and graduated in 1930 with an Elementary Life Teaching Certificate.

She was a teacher at Hager School, and did substitute teaching at Sunfield Elementary School for six years (1957-1963). She was a 4-H leader for ten years.

She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Preceding her in death were her mother and father, Ethel Bell (Porter) Hager in 1933 and Ira Jay Hager in 1967, an infant brother (year unknown), sister Ruthie Lorita 1909, brother Merton LaVeral Hager 1989, husband John Edward Coppess 1999.

Surviving are her four children, Betty (Jack) Smith of Sunfield, Doris (Darrell) Bell of Sunfield, Ruth Ann (Ron) Fuller of Houston, Texas, and Jack E. (Betty Lee) Coppess of Toledo, Ohio; ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 12, 1999 at the Rosier Funeral Home, Mapes-Fisher Chapel, Sunfield, with the Reverend Brian Sheen of the Sunfield United Methodist Church officiating. The pallbearers were Norman Hager, Richard Hager, Phillip Smith, Raymond Wilcox, Wayne Steward, Raymond Stambaugh and Honorary Pallbearer, Jerry Coppess.

For those wishing, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association in memory of Mrs. Myrtie Bell Coppess (Hager). An interment service followed the service at the funeral home at the Sunfield Cemetery.

June Covell

June Covell, 78, of Charlotte died Sept. 17, 1999.

Mrs. Covell was born Feb. 12, 1921 in Lansing, the daughter of Ranger Charles and Nellie (Myers) Wilber. She was a member of the Blue Star Mothers, Eaton County Draft and Pony Club and West Chester Extension Group.

She is survived by her husband, Norm; three sons, Donald (Sue) of Onondaga, Norman of Mt. Pleasant, and Roger (Renee) of Lansing; one sister, Betty (Wilber) McDaniel of Lansing; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one niece, Jody McDaniel; one nephew, Rob McDaniel; and close cousin Don Wilber.

Services were Sept. 20 at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with the Rev. Arthur Salisbury officiating. Interment was in the Deepdale Memorial Gardens, Lansing.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Ingham Hospice.

Harry Craun

Harry Russell Craun, 72, of Vermontville died Dec. 21, 1999 at Hayes Green Beach Hospital, Charlotte.

Mr. Craun was born Aug. 8, 1927 in Eaton Rapids, the son of Harry and Bessie (Gillette) Craun and had lived in Eaton County his entire life.

He attended the Nashville Baptist Church, was a long-time farmer, and retired in 1985 as a respected foreman at Aluminum Extrusions in Charlotte after 36 years.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Sylvia (Swift); one daughter, Kathy Vandlen of Bellevue; two sons, Steven (Phyllis) of Mason and Gary (Pam) of North Manchester, Ind.; one brother, Virgil (Mary) of Prudenville; one sister, Irene Brown of Lansing; and grandchildren, Laura and Brandon Craun, Joshua and Caleb Craun, and Kelly and Jessica Vandlen.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, David in 1951 and his parents.

Services were Dec. 24 at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with the Rev. Lester DeGroot officiating. Interment was at Hillside Cemetery, Kalamo.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Nashville Baptist Church or charity of one’s choice.
