Mildren Hamm-Walker
Mildred E. Hamm-Walker, 76, of Mesa, Ariz., died Feb. 4, 1999.
She was born in Exira, Iowa, and spent many years as a printer and currently served on the Board of Directors of Air-Way Mfg. Co.
She is survived by her husband, Frank; daughter, Kay Nosbisch; stepdaughter, Laurie Place; stepsons, Ronald and Larry Hamm, and Bruce, Kevin, James, and Garry Walker; sister, Angelina Aman; 22 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
Services were held Feb. 8 at St. Timothy’s Catholic Church in Mesa.

Joshua Handziak
Joshua Paul Handziak, 16, of Decatur, Ind., formerly of Lansing, died March 1, 1999 in Jacksonville, Fla. from a drowning accident.
He was born Oct. 13, 1982 in Lansing the son of Edward Handziak, Jr. and Denise Davis. He was a freshman at Bellmont High School.
He is survived by his mother, Denise Handziak of Decatur; father and stepmother, Edward and Sharon Handziak, Jr. of Silver Lake, Ind.; two sisters, Letha Handziak of Lansing and Brandy Handziak of Decatur; grandparents, Archie and Maurice Lumbert of Potterville and Edward and Mildred Handziak, Sr. of Holt; three stepbrothers, Mike and Matt Berger of Breman, Ind. and Mark Berger of Bourbon, Ind.; several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Services were held March 8 at Field and Leik Funeral Home in Dimondale with Pastor G. Scott Pattison officiating. Interment was at Bosworth Cemetery, Olivet.
Paul Henion
Paul Henion, 82, of Frederic, formerly of Bellevue, died May 30, 1999 at his residence.
Mr. Henion was born Feb. 12, 1917 in Crystal Valley, the son of Ernest and Della (Beck) Henion. He had resided in Frederic since 1952, moving there from Royal Oak. He was a rural route mail carrier from 1959-77 when he retired. He was employed previously as a fireman for the New York Central Railroad for 11 years. He married Pauline Roberts of Olivet on Jan. 4, 1941. Mr. Henion served for 20 months in Africa and Italy with the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of American Legion Post #106 and VFW Post #3736 of Grayling.
He is survived by his wife, Pauline of Frederic; one daughter, Patricia (Michael) Tuma of Crofton, MD; one son, David (Mari Ann) Henion of Frederic; sister, Betty Clark of Gaylord; one brother, Robert of New Mexico; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services were June 2 at the First Baptist Church, Frederic, with the Rev. Dr. Dale Hammond and the Rev. Robert Taylor officiating. Interment was in Oakwood Cemetery, Frederic.
Arrangements were made by the Sorenson Funeral Home, Grayling.
Bertha Herd
Bertha (Powers) Herd, 97, of Charlotte, died Monday, Sept. 27, 1999 at the Golden Days I Adult Foster Care Home after an extended illness.
Mrs. Herd was born in Eaton County, the daughter of Merritt and Addie (Krusen) Dillin, and lived most of her life in Eaton County, spending many winters in Florida. She was a graduate of Charlotte High School, attended Eaton County Normal and taught school for a short period of time.
Surviving are one son, Ernest (Arlene) Powers of Olivet; two daughters, Doris Oteney of Eaton Rapids and Florence Allen of Charlotte; ten grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Jakie Powers in 1954; second husband, Edmund Schlag; third husband, Edwin Herd; and by brothers, Vern, Ralph, and Alton Dillin.
Funeral services were held Sept. 29 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel, Charlotte, with Pastor Winford Collins officiating. Interment was at Bosworth-Cemetery, Olivet.
If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Barry-Eaton District Health Dept.-Hospice Program.

Mable G. Hernandez
Mable G. Hernandez, age 67, died Saturday, May 15, 1999 in Edgewood, KY. Mable was preceded in death by 2 daughters, Jeanne Burton in 1976 and Paula Miller in 1989.
Surviving are 3 sons, James Burton of Crittenden, KY, Julian Hernandez and Jeff Hernandez both of Eaton Rapids; 2 daughters, Carol Link of Union, KY and Pam Bush of Onondaga; 2 brothers, Donald Huff of Louisville, TN and David Huff of Defiance, OH; 2 sisters, Hazel Hutson of Kingsport, TN and Louise Maples of Coeburn, VA; 17 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 20, 1999, 2 p.m. at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids. Interment will follow at Deepdale Memorial Gardens, Lansing.
Rita Hettich
Rita L. Hettich, 42, of Lansing died Thursday, March 11, 1999.
Mrs. Hettich was born Oct. 28, 1956 in Hastings, the daughter of Jack and Emma (Brannigan) Hettich.
She is survived by one son, Jason Hettich; special friend, Carl Bergen; her mother, Emma; three sisters, Cindy (Tracy) Hatt of Charlotte, Mona Hettich and Colleen (Eric) Smith, both of Lansing; two brothers, Richard (Jan) Hettich and Jeff Hettich, both of Lansing; and one sister-in-law, Vickie Watson of Charlotte.
She was preceded in death by her father, Jack and one brother, Jack M. Hettich.
Memorial services were March 20 at the First Brethren Church, Lansing. Arrangements were made by the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Joyce Hewitt
Joyce Jean Hewitt, 69, of Olivet died Oct. 18, 1999 at Battle Creek Health System.
Mrs. Hewitt was born Feb. 12, 1930 in Charlotte, the daughter of Abie and Della Mae (MacMoore) Ackley. She married George Hewitt Dec. 31, 1949. Mrs. Hewitt graduated from Charlotte High School and lived in Bellevue most of her life, moving to Olivet in April 1999. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, cooking, yard sales, and going to the Soaring Eagle Casino.
She is survived by one daughter, Kathy Velte of Dayton, Ohio; three sons, Bradford of Battle Creek, Steve of Olivet and Mark of Bellevue; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Lucille Sanders of Battle Creek, Geraldine Kilborne of Vermontville and Betty Goff of Eaton Rapids; and one brother, Merritt Ackley of Little Rock, Ark.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George on Jan. 19, 1999 and her parents.
Services were Oct. 20 at the Bachman Hebble Funeral Service, Battle Creek, with Pastor George Flattery officiating. Interment was in the Hicks Cemetery, Pennfield Twp.

Dale Hill
Dale Eugene Hill, 69, of Beaverton died Tuesday, Feb. 16, 1999.
Mr. Hill was born March 5, 1929 in Aurelius the son of Clifford and Fern (Hale) Hill. He loved fishing, worked as a pipefitter for Oldsmobile until his retirement in 1988 and served in the Navy during the Korean War. He held membership in the Beaverton VFW #7303.
He is survived by his wife, Mary (Hegarty); two daughters, Sandra (Tony) Short of Olivet and Kathryn (Gary) Grabenstein of Lyons; two sons, Kurt Hill of Fountain and Keith Hill; five grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; special friends, Pat Nichols of Charlotte, Margo and Mike Winger of Dansville and George and Laura Desco of Beaverton.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Kelly Stegenga and sister, Bea Palmer.
No services have been set. Arrangements were made by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.
