Loren Hogle

Loren Hogle, 89, of Olivet died Dec. 10, 1999 at St. Lawrence Dimondale Center after an extended illness.

Mr. Hogle was born in Lee Township, Calhoun County, the son of Charles and Margaret (Weaver) Hogle. He was a lifelong Olivet area resident, a 1928 graduate of Olivet High School, attended Olivet College, was a member of the Olivet Lodge #267 F&AM, had been a member of the Olivet OddFellows Lodge, and was an avid outdoorsman.

He is survived by two daughters, Mary (Raymond) DeBar and Doreen (Dale) Weber, both of Grand Ledge; one son, Norman (Lucille) of Charlotte; an adopted daughter, Karla Monte of Marshall; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one sister, Louise Pursley of Lakeview (Battle Creek). He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris.

Graveside services and interment were Dec. 13 at the Bosworth Cemetery, Olivet, with the Rev. Dr. Leicester Longden officiating. Arrangements by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte.

Memorial contributions may be made to Olivet Lodge #267 F&AM.

Gladys Holden

Gladys D. “Jo” Holden, 86, of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., formerly of Charlotte, died Sat., April 3, 1999, in Ft. Lauderdale. Mrs. Holden was born in Charlotte, the daughter of LaVerne and Minnie (Tolbert) Wells and had been a Ft. Lauderdale resident since 1954 moving there from Charlotte.

She had been employed by Flora Ottimer’s Children’s Clothing Store and was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church both in Ft. Lauderdale. While in Charlotte she was a longtime member of the Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Max Holden on March 7, 1999.

Surviving are 2 sons, Max W. Holden of Traverse City and Dr. Douglas T. Holden of Unadilla, GA; four grandsons and eight great-grandchildren. Graveside service and interment were held Wednesday, April 7 at the Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte, with Rev. Jeffrey Bowman officiating.

Arrangements by Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel, Charlotte.

Max Holden

Max Walter Holden, 86, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., formerly of Charlotte, died March 7, 1999 after an extended illness.

Mr. Holden was born and raised in Charlotte and was the fourth generation to join the family chain of clothing stores, The John Tripp Clothing Company. In 1954, he relocated to Fort Lauderdale and was intensely involved in real estate sales for the Allied Realty. He was a veteran of World War II and member of the Christ United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his faithful companion of 65 years, Gladys; two sons, Ranger Max Holden, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, Empire, and Dr. Douglas Holden, pastor of the Pinehurst and Unadilla UMC in Georgia; four grandsons, Walter Moore Holden of Lansing, Glenn Holden of Owosso, Frank Holden of Belmont, Calif., and Paul Holden of Lansing; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services were March 12 at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with the Rev. George Fleming officiating. Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Scholarship Fund, Unadilla UMC, Box 328, Unadilla GA 31091.

Ion Holdridge

Ion J. Holdridge, 82, of Sparr, Fla., formerly of Olivet and Charlotte, died Dec. 30, 1998 at New Horizons Rehabilitation Center.

Mr. Holdridge was born in Charlotte. He was a retired music teacher, member of VFW Post #10733, Orange Lake, Fla. and had been a member of Olivet Masonic Lodge #267, F&AM.

He is survived by one daughter, Peggy Jordan of Sparr; one son, Daniel of Eaton Rapids; one stepson, Brad Bradford of Austin, Texas; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Holdridge.

Arrangements were made by the Roberts Funeral Home, Bruce East Chapel, Ocala, Fla.

George Henry Holley

George Henry Holley, age 73, of Eaton Rapids died Monday, June 21, 1999 at his residence following a terminal illness. He was born August 7, 1925 in Stockbridge the son of Lester B. and Bessie I. (Best) Holley. George was a Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific Theatre of operations. He worked for the Motor Wheel Corporation in Lansing as a Tool & Die maker with 32 years of service. A life member of the VFW Post #6986 in Onondaga, a life member of the American Legion Post #15 in Eaton Rapids and a life member of the D.A.V. in Jackson.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Nomirece; daughter, Sandy Barrett of Mason and granddaughter, Jessica Barrett; 4 brothers and 1 sister, Chet (Midge) Holley, Ottmar (Donna) Holley, Les (Martha) Holley all of Eaton Rapids and Harry (Lois) Holley of California, Florence (George) Vincent of Eaton Rapids; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were held on Thursday, June 24th at the Rosehill Cemetery in Eaton Rapids with Rev. Kevin Welch officiating. Full military honors were provided by the American Legion Post #15. For those desiring, a memorial donation

may be made to the Eaton Community Hospice in memory of George H. Holley. The family was served through the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids.

Lila Holmes

Lila Holmes, 86, of Lansing, formerly of Vermontville died Dec. 18, 1999 at East Lansing Care Center.

Mrs. Holmes was born June 7, 1913 in Vermontville, the daughter of Joseph and Calista (Bennett) Faust.

She graduated from Vermontville High School and married Ivan Holmes on Sept. 16, 1939 in Charlotte.

She was a linotype operator for the Vermontville Echo, worked for Graybar Electric in Lansing, and was a financial consultant for the state of Michigan for many years. She was a member of the Vermontville Eastern Star and Vermontville Congregational Church.

She and her husband lived in the Gladwin area after retirement. She enjoyed macramé work.

She is survived by one brother, John Faust of Flint, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ivan of Feb. 18 1996; one brother, Leslie Faust; and four sisters, Wilma Mattson, Hazel Rawson, Doris Borton, and Vivian Pierce.

Services were Dec. 21 at the Maple Valley Chapel, Nashville, with the Rev. Eric Lison officiating. Interment was at Woodlawn Cemetery, Vermontville.

Memorial contributions may be made to Vermontville Congregational Church or Eastern Star.

Mary Homan

Mary A. Homan, 93, of Charlotte died July 27, 1999 at Sparrow Health System-Sparrow Campus, Lansing.

Mrs. Homan was born April 2, 1906 in St. Johns, the daughter of Shubel and Sarah (Fegor) Salter and had lived most of her adult life in the Charlotte area. She worked from 1956-63 in the housekeeping department at Hayes Green Beach Hospital, Charlotte, and was a long time member of the Calvary Baptist Church, Charlotte.

She is survived by five daughters, Arlene (Earl) Frith of Lansing, Betty Polhamus, Esther Homan, and Theresa Homan, all of Charlotte, and Mary (James) Heath of Eagle; six sons, Robert (Martha) Polhamus of Union City, Tenn., Eugene (Virginia) Polhamus of Paris, John (Ruth) Polhamus of Lyons, James Polhamus Jr. of Charlotte, Jay (Marsha) Homan Jr. of North Adams, and Thomas (Janet) Homan of Auburn, Wash.; 35 grandchildren; 61 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, James Polhamus Sr. in 1936, her second husband, Jay Homan Sr. in 1962, one grandson, Joel Homan in 1992, two brothers, and two sisters.

Services were July 31 at the Calvary Baptist Church, Charlotte, with Pastor Mark Booth officiating. Interment was in the Millerburg Cemetery. Arrangements were made by the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Calvary Baptist Church or the 1885 Eaton County Courthouse Restoration Fund.

Julia Hook

Julia “Judy” Hook, 71, of Nashville died Jan. 4, 1999.

Mrs. Hook was born April 18, 1927 in Nashville, the daughter of Earl and Alice (Golden) Eaton. She attended the Barryville Country School and Hastings High School. She married Lawrence Hook Dec. 24, 1943 in Hastings. She attended Peace United Methodist Church, Barryville, and enjoyed crocheting, quilting, bird watching, taking care of her grandchildren, and her pet cats.

She is survived by three daughters, Judy (Ken) Rogers of Vermontville, Nora Lee (Ed) Hickey of Fine Lake, and Vicky (Bion) Eye of Dowling; one son, Larry (Judy) of Nashville; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; six sisters, Eva (Tom) Bradley of Springport, Alice (Wayne) Eaton of Freeport, Dora (Herb) Beeman of Ovid, Carol Jean Wright of Eaton Rapids, Sally (Leo) Peake of Nashville and Patty (Ron) Mausumas of Grand Rapids; and four brothers, Harley (Lillian) Eaton of Charlotte; Arnold (Judy) Eaton of Nashville, James (Caroline) Eaton of Eaton Rapids and Steve Eaton of Eaton Rapids.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence, Dec. 10, 1997; her father, Earl Eaton, Aug. 26, 1983; her mother, Alice Eaton, Dec. 29, 1998; sister Josephine Brown; and brothers, Earl, Keith, Billy, and Ike.

Services were Jan. 8 at the Maple Valley Chapel, Nashville, with Chaplain Richard Genther officiating. Interment was in the Barryville Cemetery, Nashville.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Nashville Ambulance Service.
