Esther Horn
Esther Mae Horn, 75, of Charlotte died April 28, 1999 after an extended illness.
Mrs. Horn was born in Paris, the daughter of Ernest and Ethel (Reynolds) Jaquette and had been a Charlotte area resident since 1946, coming from Williamston. She was a hair stylist, having operated her own beauty shop in her home.
She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Harold; one daughter, Shirley (Dale) Hice of Hastings; two grandchildren, Dale (Doreen) Hice Jr. and Dyanna Chesebro; and three great-grandchildren.
Cremation has taken place.
Memorial services are Monday, May 3, at 1 p.m. at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel, Charlotte, with Pastor Matthew Harvey officiating. Interment of cremains is in the Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
Beulah Houghton
Beulah M. Houghton, 82, of Charlotte died Jan. 11, 1999.
Mrs. Houghton was born Nov. 3, 1916 in Dimondale, the daughter of Henry and Zella (Rowlader) Martin. She married Allen Houghton March 7, 1942 in Charlotte. She was a member of the Crossroads United Brethren Church of Charlotte and Women’s Missionary Fellowship of Charlotte.
She is survived by two sisters, Myrtle Mitchell of Charlotte and Zella Holcomb of Lansing; one sister-in-law, Betty Martin of Charlotte; one niece, Virginia (Ernman) Royston of Charlotte; and many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Allen, Sept. 15, 1993.
Services were Jan. 14 at Koops Funeral Chapel, Lake Odessa, with the Rev. George Speas officiating. Interment was in the Lakeside Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Crossroads United Brethren Church.
Ray Howard
Ray C. Howard, 73, of Olivet, died Sunday, Feb. 28, 1999.
Mr. Howard was born July 27, 1925 in Saginaw the son of Arthur and Elsie (Rinard) Howard. He was the Administrator at Eaton Manor Nursing Home in Charlotte until her retirement in 1990. He also served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Sonia; daughter, Teri (Stephen) Overhold of Scotts; three sons, Kevin Howard of Kalamazoo, John (Libby) Howard, and Joe (Betsy) Howard both of Bay City; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and his sister, Frances Johnson of Quincy.
Services were held March 4 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with the Rev. Scott Brood officiating. Interment was at Bosworth Cemetery.
Frieda Hubbard
Frieda Hubbard, age 72, of Springport died Sunday, January 17, 1999 at her residence following a long illness. Born May 16, 1926 in Furth, Germany, the daughter of Johann and Betty (Leiblein) Berngruber [Beringruber]. Mrs. Hubbard was a 4-H leader for Calhoun County teaching for many years knitting and cooking. She had worked for 12 years with the Hoag Book Binding Company in Springport. Preceding her in death are her parents, and a brother, Johann E. Beringruber [Berngruber] in 1984.
Surviving are her husband, Daniel; one son, Charles Daniel (Edna Mae) Hubbard of Eaton Rapids; 3 grandsons, Phillip Daniel Hubbard of Tompkins Center, Charles Daniel Hubbard Jr. of Onondaga, and William Glenn Hubbard of Eaton Rapids; one sister, Maria (Walter) Streb of Roth, Germany; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be Tuesday, January 19th at 2:30 p.m. at the Clarence Center Cemetery at Duck Lake, with Rev. Robert Doner officiating. Casket bearers will be Charles D. Hubbard Jr., Phillip D. Hubbard, William G. Hubbard, Tommy Lee Hubbard, and William Hoag. For those desiring, a memorial contribution may be made to the Hospice of Jackson at 915 Airport Rd., Jackson MI 49202 in memory of Frieda Hubbard. The family was served through the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids.
Florence Hughes
Florence Mary Hughes, 91, of Bellevue and formerly of Battle Creek, died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 1999 at Oaklawn Foster Care Home in Bellevue.
She was born June 26, 1907 in Bellevue to Arthur C. and Lovira (Baldwin) Fruin. She attended Bellevue Schools. She was employed at Battle Creek Supply and later at the Federal Center Snack Bar. She married Kenneth C. Hughes of Ann Arbor in 1928. He died in 1959. She was a member of Maple United Methodist Church. She loved to sew, read, and work in the yard.
Surviving are son, Gary Hughes of Clearwater, FL; daughter, Mrs. Edward (Jean) Nemrava of Battle Creek; 5 grandchildren and a brother, Hollis Fruin of Bellevue.
She was preceded in death by brothers, Lavern Fruin of Marshall and Alden Fruin of Bellevue.
Funeral services were Feb. 5, 1999 at Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue. Interment was at Riverside Cemetery in Bellevue with Rev. Lynn Wagner officiating.
The family has suggested memorial contributions to be made to the Maple United Methodist Church.
Vernell A. Hughes
Vernell A. Hughes, age 84, died Saturday, April 10, 1999, in Eaton Rapids. Vernell was born September 27, 1914 in Lansing the son of John and Vava Hazel (Sheldon) Hughes. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. Army and he retired from Oldsmobile.
Surviving are 2 sisters, L. Imogene Korunes of Clio, Priscilla Wiedling of Eaton Rapids and several nieces and nephews.
Services may be held at a later date. Arrangements are by the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids.
Don Hulbert
Don Hulbert, 62, of Sunfield, died July 28, 1999.
Mr. Hulbert was born June 4, 1937. He retired from General Motors; was a member of several community organizations; and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golfing.
Surviving are his wife, Linda Kay; two daughters, Cindi (Jerry) LaDere and Sandy (Michael) Duer; three stepsons, Ward (Cindy) Smith; Bill (Angie) Smith, and Peter (Mindy) Smith; nine grandchildren; one sister, Kay (Max) Miller; and many nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held July 31 at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Lansing.
If desired, memorial contributions may be made to Golf Scholarship Fund at Grand Ledge Meadows, c/o the family, or to the Polio Association.
Elizabeth Hunt
Elizabeth Hunt, 91, of Charlotte, died Sunday, Sept. 26, 1999 at Eaton Manor Nursing Home after a long illness.
Mrs. Hunt was born in Charlotte, the daughter of Elmer and Maude (Tracy) Trumley and was a lifelong Charlotte resident. She was a graduate of Charlotte High School; was a life member of the Maple City Chapter #218 O. E. S.; and was a longtime member of the Lawrence Ave. United Methodist Church.
Surviving are one daughter, Louise (Randall) Harmon of Moore Haven, Fla.; two sons, Tracy (Barbara) Berg of Kent, Ohio and Milton (Sue) Hunt of Wilson, N.C.; five grandsons; two granddaughters; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Richard (Beverly) Trumley of Charlotte; sister-in-law, Jeanette Trumley of San Antonio, Texas; niece, Esther (Van) Lang of Potterville; nephew, Larry (Connie) LaParl of Greenville, S.C.; and six great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Norman Berg; second husband, Marvin Hunt; sister, Grace LaParl; and four brothers, Ernest, Darrell, Robert, and Donald Trumley.
Cremation has taken place; no services will be held. Interment of cremains was a Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.
