Doris E. (Martin) Lyon
Doris E. (Martin) Lyon, age 91, of Eaton Rapids died Saturday, April 24, 1999. She was born December 7, 1907 in Eaton Rapids township the daughter of Ernest and Gretta (Staley) Martin. Doris grew up on a Royston Road farm and graduated from Charlotte High School and Western State Normal School with a teaching certificate. She had taught for 6 ½ years at the Brickyard and Smith one room country schools. She married T.H. Lyon on May 30, 1929. Doris was an active Eaton Rapids citizen, a member and Past Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star lodge #241, a former Girl Scout Leader and was active in the U & I Club, Garden Club, Tuesday Musicale, and many Bridge Clubs. She was a member of the Griffith United Methodist Church. Doris and her husband, Ted were avid travelers and spent man fine vacations in Alaska, the Orient, Australia and Europe. She was an excellent gardener and took great pride in her gardens and her natural setting at her home. She was preceded in death by her husband T.H. Lyon in September 1997.
Surviving are 3 children, Gail (Don) Bowyer, Ardyce (Rodger) Walser and Norm (Sandy) Lyon; grandchildren, Sue (Craig) Arthurs, Martin (Pauline) Bowyer, Nancy (Robert) Buderi, Eric (Jeanie) Walser, Sara Walser, David Lyon, Jenny (Brian) Reynolds, Susan Lapp, Jeanie Aitken, and Mary Aitken; 5 great-grandchildren, Kacey and Robbie Buderi, Alec Reynolds, Madison Walser and Graham Lapp; sister, Donna Gaskell and many nieces and nephews; special friend Judy Huff and many special neighbors.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, April 28th at 10 a.m. from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with the Rev. Jack Fugate of the Griffith United Methodist Church officiating. Eastern Star memorial service will be conducted by lodge #241 at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday evening with visitation until 9 p.m. Burial will be in the Griffith Cemetery in Jackson County. Honorary bearers will be Vic Alt and Max Skinner; active bearers will be Martin Bowyer, Eric Walser, Ted Klee, Jim Kennicott, Craig Arthurs, and Homer Bentley. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to either the Order of the Eastern Star Lodge #241 or the Eaton Rapids Community Hospital Vision 2000 in memory of Doris E. Lyon.
Thelma McAllister
Thelma M. McAllister, 81, of Battle Creek died May 26, 1999 at the Battle Creek Health System.
Mrs. McAllister was born May 28, 1917 in Battle Creek, the daughter of Vern and Loella (Walker) Newbre, a prominent pioneer family who settled in Emmett Township. Her great-grandparents, Ila Newbre and Jacob Spaulding, came here in a covered wagon and settled in 1836 as one of the area’s first inhabitants. Newbre Cemetery and the former Spaulding School in Emmett Township is named for her family. During World War II, she worked for Crown Cleaners in Fort Custer and lived in Chicago, Ill., from 1954-59. She was employed in Chicago by Bell, Boyd, Marshall, and Lloyd law firm and the Hyde Park YMCA. She returned to Battle Creek and was employed by the former Shopper’s Fair as hardlines manager, retiring in 1969. She married George McAllister and resided in Marshall several years. Two previous marriages ended in divorce. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. She enjoyed reading and exchanging greeting cards and flowers.
She is survived by one daughter, Jacqueline Easter of Mabelvale, Ark.; three sons, Larry Farnham of Delton, James Farnham of Bellevue, and David Farnham of Elkhart, Ind.; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George in May 1991; her parents; one son, William Lewis Farnham in 1941; and one sister, Carol Dingledine.
Services were May 29 at the Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue, with the Rev. Nancy Wheat officiating. Interment was in the Memorial Park Cemetery.

Vernon McCabe
Vernon L. McCabe, 85, of Dearborn Heights, died March 17, 1999.
Mr. McCabe was born Nov. 8, 1913 in Highland Park, the son of LeRoy and Gladys (Shirts) McCab.
He was preceded in death by his wife, June in 1996.
Graveside services were March 20 at the Freemire Cemetery, Sunfield Township; with the Rev. Arthur Salisbury officiating. Arrangements were made by the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Bernita McCotter
Bernita McCotter, 87, of Bellevue died April 30, 1999 at home after a long struggle with cancer.
Mrs. McCotter was born September 24, 1911, in Bluffton, Ind., the daughter of Alfred and Mary (Kelly) Boyd.
She and her husband, Mike, ran a filling station and ice cream parlor in Bellevue for many years. She married Merle “Mike” McCotter April 19, 1933, in Charlotte. She was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church and its Altar Society.
She is survived by two daughters, Shirley Johnson of Universal City, Texas, and Therese McCotter of Bellevue; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Mike in June 1963; one sister, and two brothers.
Interment was in the Riverside Cemetery, Bellevue. Memorials may be made Mass offerings.
Tom McCray
Tom McCray, age 23, died Tuesday, February 2, 1999 in South Carolina as the result of a job-related accident while working for a construction company. Tom lived at the VFW National Home with his brother, Mick, from January 1984 until his graduation from Eaton Rapids High School in June 1994. He graduated 11th in his class and attended General Motors Institute. In high school Tom was involved in varsity baseball, basketball, choir, and student council, and had the lead role in a 1994 school production of “The Nerd”. He enjoyed singing, theater, writing poetry, and collecting baseball cards. He worked at the grocery store and in the public relations department while living at the National Home, and later was employed at McDonald’s in Eaton Rapids. Tome was the 1987-1988 National Buddy Poppy boy for the VFW. He was predeceased by his beloved grandmother, Marion E. Hall.
Surviving is his brother, Mick of Lansing, Michigan.
Memorial services will be held Friday, February 19, at 4 p.m. at the VFW National Home Chapel, 3573 S. Waverly Road, Eaton Rapids. Tom will be greatly missed by his brother and those whose lives he touched with his smile, his sense of humor, and his talent.
Geraldine McCullough
Geraldine E. McCullough, 73, of Bellevue died Oct. 20, 1999 at Tendercare, Marshall.
Mrs. McCullough was born Jan. 20, 1926 in Hart, the daughter of Ralph and Mary (Hixon) King. She married Thomas McCullough Aug. 6, 1928.
She is survived by one daughter, Mary Ann Cable of Battle Creek; two sons, Larry of Battle Creek and Ralph “Don” of Grand Rapids; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Ruth Hopkins of Fremont; and one brother, Ted King of Jackson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas in 1985; one daughter, Diana; three sons, Michael, Thomas Jr., and Leonard; and one brother, Ralph King.
She was a member of PNA, Moose #326, the Post 25 Year Club, St. Ann Catholic Church in Bellevue and formerly a member of St. Philip Catholic Church, Battle Creek. She enjoyed making crafts, bowling and had served as the secretary for the Bedford Rescue Squad.
Visitation is Sunday, Oct. 24 at the Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue from 5 to 7 p.m. Rosary will be at 7 p.m.
Services are Monday, Oct. 25 at 11 a.m. at St. Ann Catholic Church, Bellevue, with the Rev. Fr. Miguel Carlos officiating.
Interment will be in the Riverside Cemetery, Bellevue. Memorial contributions may be made to the family.
R. Neal McDaniel
R. Neal McDaniel, 78, of Charlotte, died Sunday, March 7, 1999 at his residence.
Mr. McDaniel was born Feb. 6, 1921 in Charlotte, the son of John and Ruth (Hale) McDaniel. He was employed by Oldsmobile in Lansing in skilled trades and retired in 1998. He was a life member of the VFW Post #2406 and a member of the American Legion Post #42. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Betty; three daughters, Denise (Norman) Stevens of Bellevue, Madeline (Glenn) Pancoast of Lansing, and Anne McDaniel of Vermontville; one son, Randy VanLoten of Indiana; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Dilger of Charlotte; two sisters-in-law, Lucille and Ruth McDaniel; two brothers-in-law, John Snowden of London, England and Denis Snowden of Aukland, New Zeeland; favorite niece, Marie Frank of Charlotte; and Michael and Randy VanLoten of Indiana.
Services were March 10 at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with the Rev. Dr. Peter Brenner officiating. Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.

Scott MacDonald
Scott Lyle MacDonald, 51, of Freeport, died Dec. 15, 1999.
Mr. MacDonald was born Aug. 8, 1948 in Lansing, the son of Vernon and Frances MacDonald. He was employed by Holland Motor Freight and enjoyed the travel of truck driving. He acted the part of Santa Claus in this year’s Hastings Christmas Parade. He was a member of the First Congregational Church, Vermontville, and enjoyed farming. He served with the U.S. Army for eight years during the Vietnam Conflict. He married Susan (Howton) Dec. 31, 1990.
He is survived by his wife, Susan; his mother, Frances of Charlotte; two brothers, Larry of Clearwater, Fla., and Bryce (Amanda) of Vermontville; two stepsons, David Ranshaw of Freeport and Terry Ranshaw of Charlotte; a God-daughter, Connie Allard; four grandchildren; Kristin Ranshaw, Kayley Ranshaw, Timothy Ranshaw, and Nickolas Ranshaw; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Vernon in 1985.
Visitation is today, Sunday, at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m.
Services are Monday, Dec. 20, at 11 a.m. at the Vermontville Congregational Church with the Rev. Eric Lison officiating. Interment is in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Vermontville.
